September 13, 2018 12:17 am at 12:17 am in reply to: Driving German cars by ” heimish” people. #1590444yehudayonaParticipant
DMB, that Sienna is actually made in Indiana and that Camry is made in Kentucky, A little over a third of German cars sold in the U.S. come from Germany, Most come from the U.S. or Mexico.
August 31, 2018 10:19 am at 10:19 am in reply to: If you love fish then why do you eat them? #1584112yehudayonaParticipantOn the Aish website there’s an excellent video called “Fish Love.”
yehudayonaParticipantYabia Omer is the only one who got it right. Sefardim do not wear yarmulkas. They wear kipot.
yehudayonaParticipantIt turns out that Russian trolls were among those stoking the anti-vaccine debate, basically to sow discord. They were trolling on both sides.
yehudayonaParticipantJoseph writes, “Chasidic parents have the right to choose to not secularly educate their children after eighth grade.” What about up until eighth grade? Do the yeshivas that are refusing to allow in DOE inspectors provide adequate secular studies? I’m talking about math, English, and science, even if we leave out culturally sensitive topics like evolution.
Akuperma, many chassidic men in Brooklyn don’t understand enough English that I can hold a simple conversation with them. Do you really think they can write English?
yehudayonaParticipantThere seems to be only one person who wants a military parade. He claims to be worth several billion dollars. Build a parade and make him pay for it.
August 17, 2018 12:17 am at 12:17 am in reply to: The military parade scheduled for November #1575914yehudayonaParticipantAccording to the latest news, the cost of Trump’s military parade has gone from $12 million to $92 million.
yehudayonaParticipantCtrl Alt Del, if you want a jet pack, enlist in Trump’s Space Force.
yehudayonaParticipantRefuah shleima to Mrs. CTL.
yehudayonaParticipant1, CTL certainly doesn’t need me to defend him, but your remark is beyond bizarre. Who’s buddy-buddy with the former head of the KGB? Hint: it’s not CTL, it’s the draft dodger with the too-big red baseball cap and the too-long red tie. Not to mention the yuuuge ego, so yuuuge that he would rather side with the KGB guy over the U.S. intelligence community than admit that his election was tainted.
August 6, 2018 7:05 am at 7:05 am in reply to: To eat or not eat food and candy made in chna #1569408yehudayonaParticipantyitzchokm, it may be virtually impossible to eat prepared foods without Chinese ingredients, but basic foods are probably free of them, unless otherwise indicated. BTW, one of the heimishe brands of dry yeast is made in China. Ironically, Red Star brand isn’t — it’s made in Mexico.
yehudayonaParticipantTrump canceled the military exercise with South Korea, partly claiming it was too expensive. Its cost would have been $14 million. So now he’s blowing most of it to stroke his own ego. The U.S., unlike dictatorships, doesn’t do military parades except in rare circumstances (like celebrating a military victory).
yehudayonaParticipantRobots are used a lot in manufacturing, which is part of the reason there are fewer manufacturing jobs than there used to be.
August 3, 2018 5:42 am at 5:42 am in reply to: To eat or not eat food and candy made in chna #1568820yehudayonaParticipantTakes2, you had me going until the part about salt. Sea salt and Himalayan pink salt are safer than “industrial salt?” Presumably “industrial salt” is mined salt, which is quite pure NaCl, certainly purer than sea salt or pink salt.
August 2, 2018 7:17 pm at 7:17 pm in reply to: To eat or not eat food and candy made in chna #1568752yehudayonaParticipantProof that CTLAWYER is not Michel Lotito.
yehudayonaParticipantI don’t generally correct others’ errors in CR posts, but in a topic such as this, you set yourself up.
yehudayonaParticipantJoseph, “proofreading” is a single word. AZ, YWN doesn’t even correct errors when they’re pointed out. I don’t think they’ve ever correctly spelled Salomon (as in R’ Matisyahu Salomon).
July 31, 2018 12:22 am at 12:22 am in reply to: Poor People Don’t Get to Have a Rav in the Summer #1567270yehudayonaParticipantI don’t live in Brooklyn, but most of the rabbis in my community (including all the rabbis at the shuls at which I regularly daven) are working at camps in the summer. Perhaps this relates to that other topic about rebbes getting full-time salaries, since all these rabbis are part-timers whose primary job is in chinuch. During the week it’s not a problem since they can be reached by phone. It becomes something of a problem if you have a shailah on Shabbos.
yehudayonaParticipantYears ago we knew a young couple where the wife was a Yemenite and the husband was an American ger. When they were married in a traditional Yemenite ceremony, they both got henna tattoos. We saw the photos. I believe it was only on their hands. So presumably it’s a custom of Yemenite Jews. That’s not an endorsement of your daughter getting one. As others have said, ask a rav.
July 17, 2018 10:28 pm at 10:28 pm in reply to: Question on Brachah of a certain Derivative of an Unspecified Plant #1560683yehudayonaParticipantyitzyk, oral medications are consumable and do not require a bracha. I believe salt does not require a bracha either.
yehudayonaParticipantThere are natural red food colors that are not kosher sensitive, namely beet juice and black carrot color (which despite its name is red).
yehudayonaParticipantWhen I was a kid, straws were made of paper.
I heard that a large amount of the plastic in the oceans is from discarded fishing gear. A recent report claims 700,000 tons of nets and the like are discarded every year.
yehudayonaParticipantDon’t be a wimp. Mix and knead it by hand.
yehudayonaParticipantJoseph, we found him guilty of assault, not guilty of attempted murder. I later found out that he received a prison sentence of a few years (I don’t remember the actual number since this was long ago).
yehudayonaParticipantMany years ago I sat on a jury for a case in which a guy shot his neighbor over a parking space. The space was in front of a driveway that had been made unusable as such because a garage had been converted into living space. The prosecutor pointed out that because it was not longer possible to park in the driveway or use it to access the garage, the space in front of the former driveway was available to all.
June 29, 2018 8:25 pm at 8:25 pm in reply to: Why does the Yeshiva World constantly post anti Trump articles #1549501yehudayonaParticipantI think you’re confused. The YWN and most frum news outlets have a decided pro-Trump bias. Just look at the numerous YWN headlines that include the term MAGA.
June 27, 2018 10:02 pm at 10:02 pm in reply to: Orthodox Rabbi Takes Job at LGBT Synagogue – Discuss #1548650yehudayonaParticipantWhat’s a tapist? Is that like Richard Nixon?
yehudayonaParticipantShmullyGreen, I have no idea what you’re talking about. What do paper milk cartons have to do with single-use plastic shopping bags? And what do fish have to do with it?
yehudayonaParticipantIt’s not a tax, it’s a fee, more like a bottle deposit (except you don’t get it back). I doubt if there’s any prohibition against stores not charging customers (just as they can include sales tax in the price of an item). My understanding is that four cents would go to NJ and one cent to the store, so the store can probably swallow the four cents if they want to give out bags for free. Interestingly, the Sierra Club opposes the bill and the supermarket lobby supports it.
yehudayonaParticipantClearly it depends what kind of challah you like. I find most commercial challah too mushy and too sweet.
yehudayonaParticipantNeville, regarding your comment about non-Orthodox Jews marrying goyim and thereby ending the Jewishness, it’s obviously not the case for Jewish women. I know a Jewish woman who married a goy, and had three daughters who also married goyim. Her grandchildren are Jewish. In this case, all the grandchildren are boys, but if there are girls, it could continue for generations.
I think it’s fairly common for baalei teshuva to find out they’re not Jewish, and gerus is a clear (not necessarily easy) solution. I question how common the mamzerus problem mentioned in the OP is. Halachically valid weddings among non-frum Jews are probably rare. If you’re talking about frum married women going OTD and then remarrying without a get, I suspect that’s very rare. If they used to be frum, they know that mamzerus is a very serious issue that they probably don’t want to inflict on their children.
yehudayonaParticipantHe was originally Hoshea bin Nun, so it seems a stretch to say that it’s because of the added yud. Also, when did the modern orthography of nekudos come about? If you can believe Wikipedia, it’s way post-Biblical.
yehudayonaParticipantGood point, laskern. In Sotah there are three things listed: he brought us out of Egypt, he parted the sea, and he brought down the mann. For some reason, Rashi left out the first and added the slav.
June 10, 2018 2:51 pm at 2:51 pm in reply to: Does a reform rabbi do anything other than attend funerals? #1536620yehudayonaParticipantReady Now, according to a study on the website of the reform rabbinical [sic] organization, they make what I consider to be a lot of money. For small congregations, the median is $106,000. For megatemples, the median is over $281,000. Figures are from 2016-2017.
yehudayonaParticipantRegarding Kalev’s address to the Bnai Yisrael, Rashi brings from Sotah 35a that he began to seemingly disparage Moshe so he would get their attention. He then listed three positive things that Moshe had done for them: parted the sea, brought them mann, and brought them the slav. I don’t understand item number three. Surely what happened when the ate the slav left a bad taste in their mouths (sorry). Any explanation as to why he mentioned this rather than something entirely positive, like providing water?
May 25, 2018 7:50 pm at 7:50 pm in reply to: Why does Schmaltz Herring cost $22 a pound? (excluding the onions & oil) #1526334yehudayonaParticipantIacisrmma, Rosner’s has various brands of cream cheese for less than $2.50. There’s no minimum purchase but it’s cash or EBT only. Closest one to Flatbush is at McDonald and Ave F. They also have chrain at reasonable prices. Speaking of which, chrain is mostly beets, water, and sugar with a little horseradish thrown in. So why do most stores sell 8 oz for $4-$5?
yehudayonaParticipantStar anise is good.
yehudayonaParticipantHealth, don’t the tire marks mess up the anatomy?
Cats are used or have been used for testing cochlear implants.
yehudayonaParticipantDon’t walk in front of fast-moving vehicles.
April 15, 2018 12:21 am at 12:21 am in reply to: Can a “Kosher” Restaurant Advertise it also is “Halal” #1506320yehudayonaParticipantI thought that the animal had to face Mecca in Halal slaughter.
yehudayonaParticipantNo, I’m a misnagid of Kim Jung Un.
yehudayonaParticipantDemonCrats is so old hat. How about Repugnicans? BTW, dotard came into vogue for describing Trump after Kim Jong Un used it.
yehudayonaParticipantChiefshmerel, you misread AviK’s post. He said Davis — not Jones — is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America.
yehudayonaParticipantHealth, not everyone who thinks the dotard is the WPOAT (worst president of all time) is a liberal. But I don’t expect you or any other trumpleton to understand that.
yehudayonaParticipantIt’s obvious from the dotard’s tweets that he was the driving force behind McCabe’s firing, regardless of who actually pulled the trigger. It’s not normal for personnel changes to happen at 10:00 PM Friday night.
yehudayonaParticipantIf he’s a Moonie, he’s pro-gun. The Moonies recently had a shindig in Virginia where each couple was required to bring an AR-15 or equivalent. If there were legal difficulties in obtaining one, they could substitute a $700 gift card from a sporting goods store to show they were planning to get one. It’s not clear what would happen if the gift card were for Dick’s Sporting Goods, which announced they were no longer selling AR-15s at around that time.
March 20, 2018 9:39 pm at 9:39 pm in reply to: Is there any food better than an excellent potato kugel? #1495433yehudayonaParticipantChocolate.
March 20, 2018 10:41 am at 10:41 am in reply to: People with felony records voting: Ken ou Lo? #1495021yehudayonaParticipantOne of the contenders for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senator from West Virginia is coal executive Don Blankenship, who served a year in prison for his responsibility for a mine explosion that killed 29 miners. The mainstream GOP fears his insurgent candidacy will result in the nomination of an unelectable candidate.
March 18, 2018 11:48 am at 11:48 am in reply to: How Careful Must We Be When Eating Out With A Hechsher #1492450yehudayonaParticipantJoseph, did you read my reply carefully? The mainstream hashgacha (by its absence) effectively says the lot is infested, but the yellow-sticker hashgacha says it’s all right.
yehudayonaParticipantchiefshmerel, the Queensborough Bridge was renamed the Ed Koch Bridge in 2011. Koch died in 2013.
