Joseph writes, “Chasidic parents have the right to choose to not secularly educate their children after eighth grade.” What about up until eighth grade? Do the yeshivas that are refusing to allow in DOE inspectors provide adequate secular studies? I’m talking about math, English, and science, even if we leave out culturally sensitive topics like evolution.

Akuperma, many chassidic men in Brooklyn don’t understand enough English that I can hold a simple conversation with them. Do you really think they can write English?

There seems to be only one person who wants a military parade. He claims to be worth several billion dollars. Build a parade and make him pay for it.

1, CTL certainly doesn’t need me to defend him, but your remark is beyond bizarre. Who’s buddy-buddy with the former head of the KGB? Hint: it’s not CTL, it’s the draft dodger with the too-big red baseball cap and the too-long red tie. Not to mention the yuuuge ego, so yuuuge that he would rather side with the KGB guy over the U.S. intelligence community than admit that his election was tainted.

yitzchokm, it may be virtually impossible to eat prepared foods without Chinese ingredients, but basic foods are probably free of them, unless otherwise indicated. BTW, one of the heimishe brands of dry yeast is made in China. Ironically, Red Star brand isn’t — it’s made in Mexico.

Trump canceled the military exercise with South Korea, partly claiming it was too expensive. Its cost would have been $14 million. So now he’s blowing most of it to stroke his own ego. The U.S., unlike dictatorships, doesn’t do military parades except in rare circumstances (like celebrating a military victory).

Takes2, you had me going until the part about salt. Sea salt and Himalayan pink salt are safer than “industrial salt?” Presumably “industrial salt” is mined salt, which is quite pure NaCl, certainly purer than sea salt or pink salt.

I don’t live in Brooklyn, but most of the rabbis in my community (including all the rabbis at the shuls at which I regularly daven) are working at camps in the summer. Perhaps this relates to that other topic about rebbes getting full-time salaries, since all these rabbis are part-timers whose primary job is in chinuch. During the week it’s not a problem since they can be reached by phone. It becomes something of a problem if you have a shailah on Shabbos.

Years ago we knew a young couple where the wife was a Yemenite and the husband was an American ger. When they were married in a traditional Yemenite ceremony, they both got henna tattoos. We saw the photos. I believe it was only on their hands. So presumably it’s a custom of Yemenite Jews. That’s not an endorsement of your daughter getting one. As others have said, ask a rav.

Many years ago I sat on a jury for a case in which a guy shot his neighbor over a parking space. The space was in front of a driveway that had been made unusable as such because a garage had been converted into living space. The prosecutor pointed out that because it was not longer possible to park in the driveway or use it to access the garage, the space in front of the former driveway was available to all.

It’s not a tax, it’s a fee, more like a bottle deposit (except you don’t get it back). I doubt if there’s any prohibition against stores not charging customers (just as they can include sales tax in the price of an item). My understanding is that four cents would go to NJ and one cent to the store, so the store can probably swallow the four cents if they want to give out bags for free. Interestingly, the Sierra Club opposes the bill and the supermarket lobby supports it.

Neville, regarding your comment about non-Orthodox Jews marrying goyim and thereby ending the Jewishness, it’s obviously not the case for Jewish women. I know a Jewish woman who married a goy, and had three daughters who also married goyim. Her grandchildren are Jewish. In this case, all the grandchildren are boys, but if there are girls, it could continue for generations.

I think it’s fairly common for baalei teshuva to find out they’re not Jewish, and gerus is a clear (not necessarily easy) solution. I question how common the mamzerus problem mentioned in the OP is. Halachically valid weddings among non-frum Jews are probably rare. If you’re talking about frum married women going OTD and then remarrying without a get, I suspect that’s very rare. If they used to be frum, they know that mamzerus is a very serious issue that they probably don’t want to inflict on their children.

Good point, laskern. In Sotah there are three things listed: he brought us out of Egypt, he parted the sea, and he brought down the mann. For some reason, Rashi left out the first and added the slav.

Regarding Kalev’s address to the Bnai Yisrael, Rashi brings from Sotah 35a that he began to seemingly disparage Moshe so he would get their attention. He then listed three positive things that Moshe had done for them: parted the sea, brought them mann, and brought them the slav. I don’t understand item number three. Surely what happened when the ate the slav left a bad taste in their mouths (sorry). Any explanation as to why he mentioned this rather than something entirely positive, like providing water?

Iacisrmma, Rosner’s has various brands of cream cheese for less than $2.50. There’s no minimum purchase but it’s cash or EBT only. Closest one to Flatbush is at McDonald and Ave F. They also have chrain at reasonable prices. Speaking of which, chrain is mostly beets, water, and sugar with a little horseradish thrown in. So why do most stores sell 8 oz for $4-$5?

If he’s a Moonie, he’s pro-gun. The Moonies recently had a shindig in Virginia where each couple was required to bring an AR-15 or equivalent. If there were legal difficulties in obtaining one, they could substitute a $700 gift card from a sporting goods store to show they were planning to get one. It’s not clear what would happen if the gift card were for Dick’s Sporting Goods, which announced they were no longer selling AR-15s at around that time.

One of the contenders for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senator from West Virginia is coal executive Don Blankenship, who served a year in prison for his responsibility for a mine explosion that killed 29 miners. The mainstream GOP fears his insurgent candidacy will result in the nomination of an unelectable candidate.
