July 18, 2019 6:40 am at 6:40 am in reply to: ICE Sweeps…It’s not just Brown and Hispanics being rounded up for deportation #1760806yehudayonaParticipant
Kollelman, with all due respect to Rabbi Miller Z”TL, that quote dates back to at least 1940, when Prof. Walter Kotschnig used it in a speech at Mt. Holyoke College.
July 14, 2019 9:38 pm at 9:38 pm in reply to: ICE Sweeps…It’s not just Brown and Hispanics being rounded up for deportation #1758018yehudayonaParticipantOne of the neighborhoods that was hit by ICE raids yesterday was Sunset Park, which is heavily Chinese. I thought it was odd that neighborhoods that are heavily Central American were not on the top of the list.
yehudayonaParticipantJoseph, rife, not ripe. Were you invited to the White House shindig on social media? If not, why not?
yehudayonaParticipantMod: The words are spelled deity and deify, from the Latin deus, meaning god (with a small g).
July 7, 2019 6:47 am at 6:47 am in reply to: Is Israel a Democratic country with a good economy? #1753314yehudayonaParticipantTransparency International publishes something called the Corruption Perceptions Index. Israel is ranked #34, tied with Botswana. The U.S. is #22. The lower the number, the less corrupt a country is.
yehudayonaParticipantNeville, I think you got the “less than 50% don tefiillin” joke, so I don’t understand why you didn’t get the crack about Gerrer chassidim eating on YK. It’s also true of whatever flavor of chassidim or chareidim you pick.
yehudayonaParticipantHow appropriate that someone bumped the turbulance [sic] thread.
yehudayonaParticipantRound and round we go. People here are making claims about how many Yiddish speakers were at the last Siyum Hashas, but I very much doubt if anybody knows. Perhaps there should be a checkbox on the ticket form so there will be some facts. Agudath Israel has set up a website (in English only, it seems) for the Siyum, and it says “ticket reservations coming soon.”
yehudayonaParticipantI’m wondering where Joseph gets his claim that the majority of American Orthodox Jews are Chassidim. There are Chassidim whose first language is English. There are also many American Chassidim (especially the males) whose knowledge of English is rudimentary at best. It’s interesting that Chassidish women tend to be more fluent in English than the men, while among Hispanics (at least in my limited experience), it’s the opposite.
June 21, 2019 9:47 am at 9:47 am in reply to: Siyum Hashas – Inclement Weather – What Happens? #1745314yehudayonaParticipantAt the last siyum, I speculated that someone would have to build a larger covered stadium for the upcoming one. Obviously that didn’t happen, and unlike the third Bais Hamikdash, one is not suddenly going to be created by Hashem. I’m guessing that the organizers are betting on the zechus of the attendees preventing inclement weather.
yehudayonaParticipantKlugeryid, if you’re on salary, your pay stub probably doesn’t list hours or an hourly rate.
I’ve never hear of an Orthodox Jewish school having school in July or August.
June 7, 2019 3:49 pm at 3:49 pm in reply to: Does a convert adopted by frum parents have a bashert? #1739970yehudayonaParticipantIn #1, I wasn’t talking about any particular time, I was talking about total numbers. IIRC, slightly more boys are born than girls. By marriageable age, there are more girls than boys (more boys die during childhood).
My #4 was aimed at Joseph, who said non-Jews don’t have a bashert because their marriage is not a halachic marriage. They have a concept of marriage, and as yitzyk pointed out, the gemara doesn’t specify that only Jews have a bashert.
June 7, 2019 9:55 am at 9:55 am in reply to: Does a convert adopted by frum parents have a bashert? #1739871yehudayonaParticipantA few questions:
1. If the number of boys doesn’t equal the number of girls. how can all of them have a bashert?
2. If someone can’t get married (e.g. too low functioning, psua daka), do they not have a bashert? What if someone is born without this problem, but he develops it as a child?
3. If a child dies R”L before reaching marriageable age, what happens to his/her bashert?
4. If there’s no concept of marriage for non-Jews, how do you define the Noahide law regarding eishes ish?
Edited
yehudayonaParticipantI see lots of sefarim that say they were printed in E. Israel. It took me a while to realize that the E doesn’t stand for East.
yehudayonaParticipantNeville, many years ago I knew of a pharmacy that had two stores, one in an inner city area and one in a suburb. Guess which one had the bigger shoplifting problem?
Lakewhut, I find cashiers are usually faster at scanning than are self-checkout customers. It just makes sense, since they’re doing it several hours a day as opposed to a few minutes a week.
There are some items that you generally can’t buy in self-checkout lanes, e.g. gift cards.
yehudayonaParticipantThe sellers are from China. There are lots of Chinese fraudulent sellers of all kinds of stuff on both eBay and Amazon. Buying a $2.49 packet of seeds is probably a worthwhile investment if it teaches you this lesson.
yehudayonaParticipantMaybe Sean Hannity invested in taxi medallions. After all, he was a client of Michael Cohen, who invested in medallions.
yehudayonaParticipantSpeaking of children having separate bathrooms, I worked with a young child who was one of two brothers. Each child had his own playroom. In Brooklyn yet.
yehudayonaParticipantThe coal mine tour is really interesting. We took out daughter there when she was 9 or 10. While we were waiting for the tour to begin, we watched a video. I remember the look on her face when someone started singing “It’s dark as a dungeon.” She had thought it was a song that I had made up.
yehudayonaParticipantTakes2, unless they’ve changed the rules in the past few weeks, you’re wrong. I’ve shopped at Bingo and they’ve been happy to sell me stuff even though I’ve never given them any personal information. Bingo does have a free membership program that gets you better prices on a few items.
Moisha’s won’t let you use a credit card unless you “register.” I put it in quotes because the only information I had to give them was my phone number.
As regards the original topic, I get so few legitimate calls on my land line that I almost never answer unless I recognize the caller ID. And it’s not only frum Jews who get these calls. I’ve seen comments on websites like 800notes in which non-Jews complain about getting calls from Jewish charities.
yehudayonaParticipantFlour in the freezer (especially whole wheat). Sugar wherever.
yehudayonaParticipantThe idea of hechsherim on clothing stores is plain silly. A skirt that’s fine on a short woman will be too short on a tall woman. A dress that’s fine on a thin woman will to too tight on a not-so-thin woman.
yehudayonaParticipantMost undocumented aliens (and virtually all terrorist suspects) arrive by airplane and overstay their visas. I think every foreigner who flies into the U.S. should wear a GPS ankle bracelet so the gummint can find them and throw them out when they overstay their visa.
yehudayonaParticipantNeville, what other hashgachas besides the OU do you consider MO? Star-K? OK? Chof-K? KAJ? Those are the ones I think of as mainstream.
Previously I’ve mentioned the yellow stickers on bagged salads. I gather this is considered a heimishe hashgacha (correct me if I’m wrong). Yet I’ve seen it on salads that the Star-K deemed too infested to certify. That’s the case when there’s no Star-K inkjetted near the date code on salads that normally have the Star-K.
yehudayonaParticipant1, it’s true that many Muslims hate Jews (as many Jews hate Muslims). I’ve worked with Muslim students and Muslim families. Once I detected some apprehension on their part, which quickly vanished when they realized I wasn’t a threat. Other than that, I’ve encountered only respect.
Likewise, when I’ve dealt with Muslim health care professionals, either in the U.S. or in Israel, I’ve never encountered any problems.
January 1, 2019 5:53 pm at 5:53 pm in reply to: Must you be wealthy to live in Los Angeles? #1655804yehudayonaParticipantYes, even the homeless people are wealthy.
December 10, 2018 10:17 am at 10:17 am in reply to: Who else is getting sick of YWN telling us what to think #1640425yehudayonaParticipantIt should be Yeshiva World “News.”
yehudayonaParticipantAnd UPS and Fedex. Use Pony Express.
November 22, 2018 11:59 pm at 11:59 pm in reply to: Being Meticulus when it comes to Flying like one is when it comes to Kashruth #1629332yehudayonaParticipantI’m surprised at how many frum people were apparently on the flight. I once had to fly to Israel on Thursday night for an emergency. The only frum-looking people on the flight were a chassidish family and me.
yehudayonaParticipantAir Albania is not very useful for getting from the U.S. to Israel, given that their only route is Tirana to Istanbul. And Air Jordan is a sneaker, not an airline.
November 22, 2018 11:56 am at 11:56 am in reply to: YWN: “Trump Grants Traditional Thanksgiving Pardons to Turkeys Peas and Carrots” #1629096yehudayonaParticipantDo you actually expect YWN headlines to be correct, grammatically or otherwise?
yehudayonaParticipantPlease explain what the title has to do with the topic.
November 4, 2018 9:58 pm at 9:58 pm in reply to: Calling 311 on someone blocking your driveway is mesira #1616816yehudayonaParticipantJoseph, if you saw somebody taking out his phone to call 311 in such a situation, would you kill him? He’s publicly committing a serious aveirah.
yehudayonaParticipantYDS, I think you meant “hearsay” not “heresy.”
October 12, 2018 12:43 am at 12:43 am in reply to: President Donald Trump, Oheiv Yisroel Par Excellence #1604010yehudayonaParticipantI haven’t read the OP or any of the replies, nor do I intend to. I found this interesting quotation from R’ Avigdor Miller ZT”L. It’s originally from Awake, My Glory. I found it in Simcha Minute 2.
Whom does the Jew admire?
The genuine Jew looks to the man of character and good deeds, whereas the nations worship the demagogues and all who are skilled in manipulation of words. The Jews are “refusers” [sarvonim]; they see through the verbiage and imposture, and they refuse to accept whatever the charlatans offer.
yehudayonaParticipantThere has been no shortage of pritzus scandals of one sort or another involving politicians of both parties. Wikipedia has an article of Federal scandals going back to Alexander Hamilton. The media love them because they sell. It’s not just the U.S. The Profumo scandal in the UK and the Berlusconi scandal in Italy made headlines worldwide.
The Ellison allegations have been covered in detail in the Washington Post and other mainstream media outlets, as have other scandals involving Democrats (Elliott Spitzer and Eric Schneiderman come to mind).
minor edit
yehudayonaParticipantYDS, Queens has many eruvs. Which one did R’ Moshe support?
yehudayonaParticipantDid something get deleted? CTL’s post seems out of context.
yehudayonaParticipantJoseph, do you want male police to frisk female suspects?
RY23 and Joseph, if the best doctor is a woman, men should use a not-so-good male doctor?
Joseph, if you were a hospital patient and you needed the services of a nurse, would you shoo away the female nurse who came to help you? There’s a good chance that there would be no male nurses.
yehudayonaParticipantHe is sticking to his job. He’s not berating the restaurant’s patrons, he’s pointing out that workers who depend on tips ought to be tipped. If you can afford to eat in a restaurant, you can afford to tip.
yehudayonaParticipantThere was no media coverage of Chappaquiddick? There doesn’t seem to be much about it that’s indisputable either, other than that Kennedy was driving and Kopechne died.
yehudayonaParticipantWhat about Al Franken? The media was all over that situation. He was pressured by his fellow Democrats to resign for behavior that was far more benign than what Kavanaugh is alleged to have done.
yehudayonaParticipantMinyanmaps lists Beth Abraham and Beer Hagolah.
October 4, 2018 1:12 pm at 1:12 pm in reply to: Why are there no Gibson guitars in Jewish Music bands #1598517yehudayonaParticipantMy decibel meter app peaked at 110 dB at last night’s wedding. That’s the average human pain threshold, according to a website I checked. Average level during dancing was around 100.
October 3, 2018 12:29 am at 12:29 am in reply to: Why are there no Gibson guitars in Jewish Music bands #1597623yehudayonaParticipantTC, thanks for the reminder to take earplugs to the chasuna I’m attending tomorrow.
yehudayonaParticipantIs the green moderator a different person than the blue moderator?
not recently -29
yehudayonaParticipantGood point, RY23. Trump outlies almost everybody, and he’s always in the news.
yehudayonaParticipantRates are going up, but I think they’ve been more that $1 an hour in Manhattan for a while.
September 13, 2018 6:48 pm at 6:48 pm in reply to: Driving German cars by ” heimish” people. #1590861yehudayonaParticipantPinchas, I could have sworn I’ve seen some of those smug drivers driver non-German luxury cars — Range Rovers, Lexuses, etc.
yehudayonaParticipantHow do you define “met?” Close up, with an exchange of words or handshakes, or at a distance? If the latter, how many thousands “met” the gedolim who spoke at the last Siyum Hashas?
