Gadol, Moisha’s, like most Brooklyn kosher stores, does offer delivery and many people use it. But for various reasons, many people can’t or won’t. For example, I work in the neighborhood but live outside their delivery area. Others find it difficult to be home when the delivery is expected.

Both the quarter idea and the locking carts work well for a store with a large parking lot. For stores like Moisha’s and KRM, where many people park on the street perhaps a couple of blocks away, neither system would work. Most people would consider the quarter (or even a dollar) a rental fee and not bother shlepping back. It’s also annoying if you don’t have the coin on you. Like the Frum Guy, I also return stray carts as I’m walking to the store. I also return my cart to near the store since it’s not a big deal for me. But for a shopper with a little kid or two or three, it’s a lot to expect. I’m sure the store has a worker go around and retrieve carts in the immediate neighborhood (just as a store with a parking lot has a worker retrieve carts from the parking lot). The problem is with people who take the carts home with them, or to far locations.

Butchers used to give away beef bones. I don’t go to a stand-alone butcher so I don’t know if they still do. I suspect the $2 was for chicken bones.

Joseph and huju are obviously talking about two different things. Joseph is referring to people who non-Jews consider Jews but are not Jews according to halacha. Huju is talking about Jews who don’t follow halacha (i.e. non-frum Jews).

“men not in uniform, if applicable, should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder”

So I should remove my yarmulka and put it on my left shoulder? Or maybe “headdress” refers only to what Indian chiefs wear?

Lower, it may be easier to put the laundry in a top loader than a front loader, but it’s harder to take it out. And when you’re taking it out, it’s wet and therefore heavier.

Don’t know if it’s still the case, but outbound Green Line trains in Boston used to be free if you got on after a certain stop. If the conductor opened the door for a non-Jew, would a Jew be allowed to hop on?

Supermarkets are in business to make money, so they charge what they can. More competition usually means lower prices. There’s more competition in Brooklyn than in Queens or the Five Towns, and more in those than in Baltimore or Detroit. In addition, shipping costs raise the prices of kosher food that’s out of the NY area (though both Detroit and Baltimore have local CY milk, while LA imports its CY from NY!).

GG’s prices in the 5 Towns are high, but they seem to do a good business, possibly because area residents are less price-sensitive. GG opened Kolsave, with lower prices and a smaller selection in the old Brach’s location.. GG’s prices in Boro Park are higher than KRM’s and it shows in the relative amount of business they do — whenever I’ve been in GG-BP it’s been pretty empty, while KRM is usually crowded.

Gadol, fresh fish is more expensive than kosher meat. You can get Chinese-grown frozen farmed fish for a reasonable price, but I try to avoid food produced in China because I don’t trust its safety.

My understanding of OU kashrus policy is that there is no one posek whose opinion is paramount. Rav Belsky Z”TL held that NYC water did not need to be filtered, but the OU decided that it did. Perhaps it’s only when the foremost posek is maikel that he’s overridden.

As regards the shul in the mosque in the Bronx, I found articles referring to Young Israel of Parkchester that got taken over by Chabad, becoming Chabad of the East Bronx. The Chabad website doesn’t list it and neither does the NCYI website, so I suspect the shul has disappeared.

I won’t answer for Charlie, but years ago I read about a shul in the Bronx that had services in a mosque. If I recall correctly, it was a struggling shul in a changed neighborhood (as are/were most neighborhoods in the Bronx), and they lost their building. I don’t remember the details (e.g. what part of the mosque’s building they used).

Since you call yourself Talmidchochom, perhaps you can tell us why it’s assur to daven in a mosque.

Mammele, it’s my impression that most states have pretty strict standards when it comes to home schooling. Of course there are those who ignore those standards and slip under that radar. Some of the horrendous stories of child abuse that have been in the news involve home schooled children.

Neville, you’re overgeneralizing. From my admittedly limited knowledge, there’s a wide range of practices in Conservative synagogues. I mentioned one that used the Artscroll siddur. I know of another that used the Birnbaum siddur. It’s highly unlikely that they censored prayers (though I suspect they skipped a lot). I use the past tense because these synagogues both closed a few years ago.

My guess is that there are no Conservative synagogues with mechitzas but there are still some that don’t count women for a minyan or give women aliyos.

My car was once hit by a guy who ran a red light. After the crash, he apologized, saying he hadn’t seen the red light. Apparently he changed his tune, because his insurance company denied he was totally to blame. I wish I had had a dash cam to provide irrefutable evidence.

Flatbusher, I believe there are still Conservative synagogues where women aren’t counted for a minyan and don’t receive aliyos. Some call themselves traditional while others are billed as egalitarian. I suspect it’s only the latter where women participate in all roles.

As regards walking into a conservative synagogue, I think there are yeshivas that rent space in them. I once worked for a secular school that rented classroom space in a conservative synagogue. On rare occasion, they used the sanctuary. Much to my surprise, the siddurim in the pews were Artscroll.

Joseph, I don’t understand why it’s OK to be seen in a hotel lobby but not in a restaurant. People go to restaurants to eat. People go to hotels for a variety of reasons, some of which are less innocent than eating.

TLIK, you write “Foreign aid is not tzedokoh. It is always to satisfy a vested interest.” I totally agree. It’s in the interest of the United States to have safe, prosperous, democratic countries all over the world, but especially in the Western Hemisphere.

jdf007, an airplane ticket from Central America to the U.S. costs much less than $14,000. More people fly in on a tourist visa and then overstay that visa than cross the southern border illegally by land. So why do they do it? My guess is that it’s hard to make an asylum claim if you come on a tourist visa. Your argument for following the rules doesn’t work if you’re in fear of your life. Poverty is not a valid basis for asylum, so the fact that somebody paid a coyote a lot of money is a red herring. Chances are that after they pay the money, they really are poor.

If Trump really wanted to solve the immigration crisis, he would use the resources of the United States to improve conditions in Central America so people wouldn’t want to leave. Instead he cut humanitarian aid to Central America, and is diverting some of the funds to the Venezuelan opposition to pay for their salaries, airfare, “good governance” training, propaganda, technical assistance for holding elections and other “democracy-building” projects.
