MA: Do you have evidence of Parkinson’s or seizures from a reliable source?
I was reading an article about presidents who have covered up their medical conditions. It’s practically a tradition, dating back almost to the beginning of the republic.
yehudayonaParticipantJoseph, 43 states allow write-ins. Even if all 11 states he’s on are among the 43 (I’m to lazy to check), that’s still 32 more states. That’s hardly “a few.”
September 14, 2016 3:24 pm at 3:24 pm in reply to: Blocking traffic while parking (or waiting for a driver to pull out of a spot) #1179735yehudayonaParticipantWhy do people who park by fire hydrants (and stay in their cars) think it’s better not to pull all the way to the curb? It’s just as illegal and it impedes traffic flow.
September 13, 2016 1:06 pm at 1:06 pm in reply to: Is Hillary too weak and fragile to survive the rigors of the presidency? #1190262yehudayonaParticipantDonald Trump and Hillary Clinton are in that “basket of deplorables.” May we be zoche to see neither of them in the Oval Office.
September 12, 2016 1:02 pm at 1:02 pm in reply to: Is Hillary too weak and fragile to survive the rigors of the presidency? #1190237yehudayonaParticipantFolks, it’s just pneumonia. My 99-year-old MIL is recovering nicely from it, and she’s much more frail than Hillary. She’d probably also make a better president.
yehudayonaParticipantSorry, I forgot about the poor moderators who are obligated to read every post. My sympathies.
thank you
yehudayonaParticipantApparently it took some skill to turn them back. Maybe you can find a “how-to” video on Youtube.
yehudayonaParticipantDoes anybody other than the two participants read this thread any more?
sigh… yes
yehudayonaParticipantiacisrmma, according to my source, Sher is about the only honest used car place around. And I don’t mean around Baltimore.
I’m told that with the electronic odometers (as opposed to the old mechanical ones), it’s very easy to turn them back, so you shouldn’t assume that any odometer reading is correct.
yehudayonaParticipantHealth, I was going to bring up that RD article on crooked dentists. If I recall correctly, the writer got his teeth evaluated by an honest dentist who said he needed some minor work. He then went to dentists all over the country, finding that the vast majority recommended way more work than he needed. even to the extreme of extracting all his teeth.
My childhood dentist was drill-happy. I suspect he filled way more cavities than he needed to. He ended up a suicide. I’ve had two teeth break and require crowns because they were weakened by his fillings.
As for honest mechanics, I recommend Maven Motors on Jamaica Avenue in Richmond Hill, Queens (not a bad drive from Brooklyn if you take the Jackie Robinson).
yehudayonaParticipantThe salaries of public employees are generally part of the public record.
yehudayonaParticipantWhen you have to explain a joke, it loses its funnitude.
September 12, 2016 2:39 am at 2:39 am in reply to: Is Hillary too weak and fragile to survive the rigors of the presidency? #1190229yehudayonaParticipantActually, given the quality of the major party candidates, we’d be best off if the winner died in office. Their running mates seem somewhat better than either of them.
yehudayonaParticipantSince Sparkly reintroduced the question, I think we should note that women have more leeway with davening times than men do.
yehudayonaParticipantYawn. Wake me when Health and Ubiquitin kiss and make up.
yehudayonaParticipantThere really aren’t a lot of 3 AM maariv minyanim even in Brooklyn. Maybe Shomrei Shabbos. I think Rabbi Landau’s shul’s last minyan is 1:30 or so. How many kollelim, mikvaos, etc. do you need? I can understand moving for education for your children (we did it 3 times), but I think number of amenities isn’t a good reason to uproot your family. Avraham didn’t move to Canaan because of the number of kosher pizza stores there.
September 5, 2016 7:45 pm at 7:45 pm in reply to: If Trump becomes president, I'm moving to Canada… #1190612yehudayonaParticipantHealth, you made me work to find that. You said Trump is the lesser of two evils. So why vote for him? I believe you live in a state that’s solidly for Clinton, so your vote for Trump is meaningless. Why not vote for someone you actually respect?
September 5, 2016 6:09 pm at 6:09 pm in reply to: If Trump becomes president, I'm moving to Canada… #1190606yehudayonaParticipantHealth, are you voting for Trump or against Clinton?
September 5, 2016 3:10 pm at 3:10 pm in reply to: If Trump becomes president, I'm moving to Canada… #1190602yehudayonaParticipantOne other thing… I find it amazing that any frum Jew can enthusiastically support either of the major party candidates. I can understand those who will hold their nose and vote for the candidate they consider the lesser of the two evils, especially for those who live in swing states. But they are both so antithetical to Torah values that I can’t see how any Torah Jew can be FOR either candidate (as opposed to against the other one). B”H I live in an uncontested state so I can vote against both of them.
September 5, 2016 3:02 pm at 3:02 pm in reply to: If Trump becomes president, I'm moving to Canada… #1190601yehudayonaParticipantBava Kamma 52a (just before the mishna) talks about a shepherd who is upset with his flock and appoints a blind goat to lead them. Rashi says it’s a mashul to Hashem arranging for the Jewish people to have a bad leader in order to punish them. I think we can extend that to America in this election.
yehudayonaParticipantI wear goggles when I use power tools. I wear sunglasses when it’s sunny.
September 2, 2016 6:10 pm at 6:10 pm in reply to: Is the $7600 per couple offer on the main page a scam??? #1180724yehudayonaParticipantIt’s all the flashing images that make YWN unusable without ad blocking software.
September 2, 2016 1:13 pm at 1:13 pm in reply to: Is the $7600 per couple offer on the main page a scam??? #1180718yehudayonaParticipantDaMoshe, to clarify what R’ Salomon said, it’s not that Kupat Ha’ir is one of those charities with high fundraising costs as one might expect given the ubiquity of their ads. He objects to their claims that if you give them enough money, your troubles will be solved. He thinks they’re exploiting vulnerable people. My source is a 2010 article in Cross-Currents by R’ Yitzchok Adlerstein.
September 2, 2016 12:58 pm at 12:58 pm in reply to: People with ADHD are as good as other people #1176829yehudayonaParticipantRebYidd23, what do you mean? People with ADHD shouldn’t use meds to help them deal with it? People with a family history of ADHD shouldn’t avoid having children?
September 1, 2016 1:53 pm at 1:53 pm in reply to: Is the $7600 per couple offer on the main page a scam??? #1180715yehudayonaParticipantIf we’re talking about buying limited-availability coins from the U.S. Mint and selling them to a dealer at a profit, DY is correct. As I explained above, this is a way the dealer gets around the n-per-customer limit. There’s almost no risk, since even if the dealer doesn’t buy it, you can sell it yourself at a profit as ZD did.
yehudayonaParticipantCTL, so in a state without the death penalty, you think there’s no problem with a Jewish judge in criminal court?
August 31, 2016 4:45 pm at 4:45 pm in reply to: Do you think it's ok to bring your kids to the beach? #1177364yehudayonaParticipantTo the best of my knowledge, there used to be a single-gender beach in Boston. It was called the “nuns’ beach” or the “priests’ beach.” This was sometime in the mid to late 20th century.
Somebody needs to go on the rides with the blind boy. Participants are required to wear swimsuits, so his mother couldn’t accompany him.
yehudayonaParticipantCTL, you imply that civil court isn’t a problem but criminal court is. Care to elaborate? Not that it matters, but I suspect there are more Jewish plaintiffs and defendants in civil cases than there are Jewish defendants in criminal cases.
August 31, 2016 4:13 pm at 4:13 pm in reply to: Marriage License- Is it required prior to the chassuna? #1175084yehudayonaParticipantJoseph, it was a while ago so I don’t remember the context, but I distinctly remember having to dig up our civil marriage certificate for some bureaucratic purpose.
August 29, 2016 3:01 pm at 3:01 pm in reply to: Tell us about your first date with your spouse #1183856yehudayonaParticipantYidesh_kup, you barley talked? Does that mean you discussed cholent recipes?
yehudayonaParticipant… Nefesh B’Nefesh will have to expand their staff.
yehudayonaParticipantSparkly, not that you have time to read stuff like that, but you can search WorldCat to find what libraries have practically any book.
My father was a pharmacist back in the days when all pharmacists were compounding pharmacists. He sold medicinal whiskey during Prohibition. I grew up with several U.S. Pharmacopeias from the ’20s and ’30s in the house. By the time I came around, he basically filled pill bottles.
yehudayonaParticipantSparkly, if an engagement ring is a sign of marriage, what’s a wedding ring?
I forgot to mention that despite the diamond cartel’s slogan “Diamonds are forever,” they’re not. My mother’s diamond got shattered internally when something fell on it. After that, it was basically worthless.
Akuperma, as you probably know, the difficulty of appraising diamonds (or any stone) is the reason that halacha doesn’t allow them for kiddushin.
yehudayonaParticipantCTL, doesn’t a chassan need a bigger tallis than a bar mitzvah?
Our SIL got two talleisim and a kittel from us and an overpriced watch from our daughter. No atara. They don’t have the space for a chassan Shas.
August 29, 2016 2:31 am at 2:31 am in reply to: Marriage License- Is it required prior to the chassuna? #1175069yehudayonaParticipantWe were married in my wife’s home state with a New York rabbi as mesader kiddushin. He was authorized to perform marriages in NY, but not in the state in which we were married. He performed our civil marriage a few days later when we returned to NY. His wife and son were the “eidim” on the civil marriage form. On the rare occasions when I need to put down the date on which we were legally married, I have to dig out the marriage license.
yehudayonaParticipantAll this (apparently bogus) talk about the health of the major party candidates got me thinking. Since the choices are so bad, it would be better for the candidate whose health is worse to win, so he/she wouldn’t complete his/her term.
yehudayonaParticipantAs I’ve mentioned before, my wife and I agreed that a diamond was a waste of money, and, at the time, ethically questionable (this was in the days of Apartheid). She was willing to forego an engagement ring entirely. Some years later she asked for a CZ solitaire, which cost less than $200, IIRC.
yehudayonaParticipantWhen I got phones for Ringplus, I asked eBay sellers to run the IMEI through the ESN checker. They obliged. Generally speaking, sellers don’t want to tell you the IMEI, presumably for security reasons.
August 23, 2016 1:54 am at 1:54 am in reply to: Do you think it's ok to bring your kids to the beach? #1177339yehudayonaParticipantRebYid, goats will eat almost anything. Beach goers usually bring snacks.
Seriously, I know a totally blind boy who would love to go to a water park. There’s no problem of him seeing women who aren’t tznius, but who can go with him?
yehudayonaParticipantFantastik works well for killing ants. I think frozen bugs will revive when they thaw out.
August 22, 2016 4:27 pm at 4:27 pm in reply to: Inviting other young couples over for a seuda #1170760yehudayonaParticipantIf you’re too young to drink coffee, you don’t belong in the coffee room.
yehudayonaParticipantA&P is a bankrupt supermarket chain. They owned Pathmark and Waldbaums.
yehudayonaParticipantKreplach eyes?
yehudayonaParticipantCertain English names became associated with Jews to such an extent that it’s rare for non-Jews to use them. Examples are Irving, Isidore, Morton, Hyman, and Morris. So are these now Jewish names?
yehudayonaParticipantMeno, they haven’t been genetically modifying tomatoes to look nicer, they’ve been breeding them to get traits that have nothing to do with taste. Mostly, commercial growers want tomatoes that look nice, ship well, and are slow to spoil. Tomatoes are advertised as “firm ripe slicing tomatoes.” I don’t want slicing tomatoes, I want eating tomatoes, so I grow my own. I just picked a whole lot for Shabbos.
To stay on topic, “tomato” is a rather old-fashioned slang term for an attractive girl, and my tomatoes don’t have hair (though the leaves and stems have hairs called trichomes, which I don’t dye).
yehudayonaParticipantYochy, you’re not quite right. Swing states include Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Michigan, all of which have significant numbers of frum voters. I can’t find the numbers, but I’d be surprised if it’s as low as 0.5%. I realize you didn’t mean 99.5% literally, but my point is that there are frum Jews whose vote actually matters.
yehudayonaParticipantHooray for yichusdik! I wish I could write you in on my ballot, but I don’t think screen names are allowed.
August 17, 2016 6:43 pm at 6:43 pm in reply to: Is the $7600 per couple offer on the main page a scam??? #1180689yehudayonaParticipantThe U.S. Mint has a per-customer limit on these coin deals, so a coin dealer used this ploy to get around it. These sell out very fast, so you’d have to have a quick trigger finger to get them in the first place.
yehudayonaParticipantIt’s interesting that the change in the topic’s title isn’t reflected in the URL, which still uses the original phrase.
August 15, 2016 6:38 am at 6:38 am in reply to: women and guys in a not jewish college together #1175246yehudayonaParticipantAbba, your first post in this thread has at least one grammatical error. Many people have different writing styles depending on context. For example, any number of people text or email me using non-words such as “ur.” They’re all capable of writing standard English when the occasion requires it.
