I don’t think we need yet another topic like this.

Babbler, there are other options besides not voting. I have my opinion about which of the two is the greater evil, but since I live in a non-swing state, I can vote for someone I actually think is a good person without worrying that my one vote would allow the greater evil to win. I don’t think much of the third party candidates, so I’m planning to do a write-in.

But in the yeshiva world, the wife supports the family while the husband learns in kollel. So it would make sense for there to be multiple wives so there would be more income.

There was a story in the news last year about someplace in rural India where one of the main duties of wives is to fetch water from a distant source. Polygamy is legal for Muslims in India but it’s illegal for others. Despite this, among Hindus in this location, widows often become additional wives so they can help with the water fetching. You can google “water wives India” to find more on this.

It also matters what ages your kids are and how influenced they are by their peers. If all of Shmerel’s classmates are going to theme parks, he may not be too happy about going to the neighborhood playground.

Nit: Since the Mormon church was established in 1830, less than 200 years ago, it’s incorrect that any kind of Mormons have been practicing polygamy for hundreds of years.

All the cakes at my daughter’s vort came from a cake gemach. They looked fine and they went over well. There was a cake that looked like what’s described here. I don’t like bakery cakes (too much frosting/filling/goop) so I didn’t have any.

Okiale, you’re absolutely correct that most more yeshivish places won’t be able to accommodate you. Specifically, for Shaar HaTorah you would need a stronger background than you have. There are schools aimed specifically at baalei teshuva. Have you looked into any of them? Since in many cases, the students’ parents aren’t on board with the religion thing, they have to sell themselves as college prep places.

Truth, Hillary’s interest in aliens (the kind from other planets, not the kind from other countries) is merely weird. Trump’s blaming a cabal of international bankers is scary. B”H I’m not voting for either of them.

Polls are showing that Clinton beats Pence by a larger margin than she beats Trump.

Flatbusher, it’s always been the case for us New Yorkers — there’s never been any doubt that she’ll win NY’s electoral votes. That’s an advantage, because we can safely vote for a third party or write in candidate — someone we actually consider a decent human being.

Akuperma, Zero Population Growth was a fringe movement 45 years ago and it still is. Countries with shrinking populations are desperate to reverse their course. China’s policy of one-child families led to a shidduch crisis much worse than ours. Remember, the mantra of liberals and feminists is reproductive rights.

Health, you’re correct that it’s conceivable that one party could have the two-thirds majority it takes for convicting a president. In 1935-1943 and 1963-1967 the Democrats had a two-thirds majority in the Senate.

Abba_S, if you’re referring to the White House, I’m afraid that Trump would gold-plate everything.

It’s not quite true that in the Clinton case the Senate vote was along party lines. While no Democrat voted to convict, a number of Republicans voted to acquit. There were two charges, and of the 55 Republicans voting, 45 voted guilty on one charge and 50 on the other. Since conviction requires 67 votes, it was all basically theatrics. There was never any chance that he would have been convicted. To remove a president requires the vote of both parties.

The Washington Post has been trying to find evidence of Trump’s charity and has mostly been unable to do so. Of course, if he released his tax returns, we could just look at his Schedule A.

Health, the statistics you posted there had nothing to do with racial violence. Blacks killing blacks in Chicago is not racial violence. Are you claiming that it’s so obvious that there’s more racial violence now than in the LA riots of 1992? Over 50 people dead, 2000 injured, $1 billion in property damage? Where is all the violence today? Is the liberal media covering it up?

Health, you claim today’s racial violence is much worse than that of the early ’90s in LA and Crown Heights. If that’s the case, you should be able to present facts and figures to back it up. For instance, present statistics on deaths, serious injuries, and property damage. I already gave you a head start when I stated that 55 people died in the LA riots (some sources say 54).

There was no riot in Dallas. There was a riot in Crown Heights, and the consensus is that Dinkins messed up big time. Likewise, the LAPD messed up in the LA riots. It’s ridiculous to compare the level of racial violence today (in places like Charlotte) to the racial violence of Crown Heights and LA in 1991 and 1992 respectively.

It may depend on the system. When I taught in public schools, I got Yom Tovim off for free if I recall correctly. It’s probably covered by the union contract. If you don’t like the answer HR gives you, check with your union rep.

As mik5 points out, there aren’t a lot of days since most districts give off RH, YK, and Pesach. This year it’s probably 6: Sukkos, Shmini Atzeres/Simchas Torah, and Shavuos. You’ll probably have to work during Chol HaMoed. Some years you’ll luck out and have YK fall on Columbus Day or Shavuos fall on Memorial Day. If necessary, take Purim as a personal day (this year it’s on a Sunday). It’s a good idea to save sick days for when you’re sick.

To get back to the topic, I don’t think the issue for BLM people is so much whites shooting [allegedly] unarmed blacks as it is cops shooting them. There have been black cops involved in some of the other cases as well — Freddie Gray comes to mind. As I believe RebYidd hinted, it’s also possible for black cops to be biased against blacks.

What attack? I stated facts. You have called people DemonCrats dozens, maybe even hundreds of times. Trump’s name-calling is all over the place.

Also, it’s disingenuous to associate attacks (and lack of logic) with only liberals. These days it seems to be woven into practically all political discourse. Think of Trump’s performance in the Republican debates — back when you presumably supported one of the other candidates.

Health, why do you assume that those who criticize the Republican Party are liberals? Please show me where I have espoused liberal ideas. I have stated several times that I plan to vote for neither of the major party candidates for president. In the past, I’ve been able to hold my nose and vote for the lesser of the two evils, but this year even the lesser of the two evils gives off such a stench that I can’t do it.

If the Republican Party doesn’t survive, it will largely be because it has morphed from the party of Lincoln to the party of Trump.

DY, from the OP it seems that the controversy is about the TVs, not the alcohol. Lots of kosher restaurants have bars. I suspect very few Jewish alcoholics frequent bars — there are plenty of opportunities to obtain alcohol in shuls and at simchas.
