Proper politicians is an oxymoron.
November 16, 2016 3:41 am at 3:41 am in reply to: Orthodox Jews Overwhelmingly Voted for Trump #1193604yehudayonaParticipantI asked this before but I don’t think anyone answered. We don’t vote for a president, we vote for electors from our state. So how do American citizens who live in Israel and don’t have an American address vote?
H’isreading: I couldn’t bring myself to vote for either of the deplorable major party candidates. Since I live in a non-swing state, I didn’t have to vote for the less deplorable of the two, so I wrote in someone who seems to meet my criteria: a decent person, knowledgeable, and a philo-semite.
yehudayonaParticipantHere’s a data point regarding COBRA. When I was between jobs a few years ago, I had COBRA. The premium for family coverage was about $1650 a month, or roughly $20,000 a year. That’s not including co-pays, of course. As ubiquitin pointed out, it’s not always affordable.
yehudayonaParticipantlightbrite, Hitler brought in television ads? Television hadn’t been invented yet.
Mammele, Robert Kennedy was Attorney General in his brother’s administration. It’s certainly legal, but it may not be wise.
yehudayonaParticipantJoseph, you read the NY Times?!
Another example of a Jew who served in a government position is Rabbi Meir Shapiro who was a member of the Polish parliament. Needless to say, Polish Jewry didn’t fare too well in the years after his untimely death in 1933.
yehudayonaParticipantAkuperma, when I raised the issue of antisemitism, I wasn’t referring to Trump or even his inner circle (though Bannon makes me nervous). I was referring to his supporters, some of whom are open antisemites (e.g. David Duke, the NC KKK). When, as seems likely, Trump moderates his positions, the Jews will be to blame. When bad things happen, the Jews will be to blame.
Joseph, it’s ironic that you mention Abarbanel, since despite his influence, he was unable to prevent the expulsion of the Spanish Jews.
yehudayonaParticipantA lot of people (including me) aren’t heartbroken that Hillary lost, they’re upset and worried that Trump won. Of course, it’s all in Hashem’s hands. Let’s hope that his erratic behavior is behind him. This morning’s Twitter rant against the NY Times — after he said he would exercise restraint — isn’t reassuring.
yehudayonaParticipantRabbi Avi Shafran wrote an op-ed piece for Ha’aretz in which he states that given the choice between Roe v. Wade with no restrictions on abortion and totally criminalizing abortion, he would have to side with allowing abortion because there are cases where halacha requires abortion. However, he goes on to say, he would prefer a middle ground.
I read the Republican platform section on abortion, and find no mention of any exceptions.
November 13, 2016 5:09 am at 5:09 am in reply to: When we do have a female president one day #1191651yehudayonaParticipantJoseph, why do you oppose the idea of a female president? Would you have protested Devorah and Chuldah?
yehudayonaParticipantApparently Jared Kushner is very influential with Trump. I’ve said I think having a Jewish president would be bad for the Jews because it could exacerbate anti-semitism. For the same reason, I think having a Jew who could be seen as pulling the president’s strings is bad for the Jews.
yehudayonaParticipantIf you have a computer (which you probably do if you’re posting here), you can watch DVDs on that. Back in the days of VHS tapes, we bought a TV so our kids could watch Uncle Moishy videos and the like. I believe I got a model for which you could somehow disable the tuner. Using it to watch TV programs was never an issue.
yehudayonaParticipantAkuperma, apparently you haven’t seen what the OP is talking about. It’s some kind of engraving process. Washington Cemetery in Brooklyn has several that are visible from the street.
November 13, 2016 4:32 am at 4:32 am in reply to: Converting to Judaism, how do I explain to family about Xmas? #1193145yehudayonaParticipantLuL, Trump says he’s the only one who can keep us safe. Sounds like he thinks he’s a savior.
November 11, 2016 8:46 pm at 8:46 pm in reply to: Converting to Judaism, how do I explain to family about Xmas? #1193143yehudayonaParticipantdovrosenbaum: “In the case of Jesus, he was wicked because he was a false messiah, and he did horrible things. He cursed people, disrespected his mother, and called a Samaritan woman a dog.”
Reminds me of a certain president-elect, although as far as I know, he didn’t disrespect his mother.
yehudayonaParticipantTrump, at 70, is the oldest person ever elected president. My guess is that he will be at most a one-term president. One thing we don’t have to worry about — unlike Obama, his hair won’t turn gray.
One other thing — he’s probably going to be the last draft dodger elected president. The draft effectively ended in 1972, so you’d have to have been born before 1953 to have been drafted.
November 11, 2016 3:29 am at 3:29 am in reply to: Converting to Judaism, how do I explain to family about Xmas? #1193127yehudayonaParticipantJews for Judaism is an excellent anti-missionary organization that might be helpful in regards to explaining the Jewish attitude towards Jesus.
yehudayonaParticipantThe KKK announced on their website that they are having a victory parade in NC in December.
yehudayonaParticipantIf we take women who accuse men of harassment and worse at their word, both Bill Clinton and Donald Trump are criminals. They were both pals of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. It will be interesting to see how various court cases against Trump unfold.
yehudayonaParticipantThe extension of coverage to children up to age 26 is a provision of the ACA that’s very popular. It’s unlikely that the GOP will be stupid enough to eliminate this.
yehudayonaParticipantLuL, I hope they weren’t talking about leftover cholent. If nobody ate it, that would violate bal tashchis.
yehudayonaParticipantHealth, you’re the one who’s mixed up. Reread what I said.
yehudayonaParticipantFWIW, Jaguar hasn’t been British-owned since 1990, when Ford took it over. Ford sold it to Mumbai-based Tata Motors in 2008. So your Jaguars may not be German or Japanese, but they’re not strictly British either (unless they’re pre-1990).
I also live in an area where my vote didn’t count. It’s a given that Hillary will get NY’s electoral votes. U.S. senator and congressman face token opposition, state assembly unopposed. There are eight people unknown to me running for seven slots on the state supreme court. Rather than voting for one of the two deplorables at the top of the major party tickets, I did my first-ever write-in.
yehudayonaParticipantHealth, we already discussed impeachment. Assuming that the impeachment is basically political as in Bill Clinton’s case (clearly not what the Founding Fathers intended), convicting a Democratic president would require the Republicans to have a 2/3 majority in the Senate. That is a highly unlikely scenario. Remember, no president has ever been convicted. Nixon resigned because he would have been the first.
November 7, 2016 4:30 am at 4:30 am in reply to: CONFUSED: Orthodox Jews MUST Vote Trump..And MUST Vote Hillary?! #1189331yehudayonaParticipantI’ll add another opinion: every Orthodox Jew should vote for a decent person who in fit to govern. That eliminates both major party candidates (and probably all third party candidates as well).
November 7, 2016 4:26 am at 4:26 am in reply to: Why not Johnson-Weld (Libertarian candidates for President) #1189324yehudayonaParticipantActually, for New Yorkers at least, it’s not time to vote for anyone, since there’s no early voting (except absentee ballots).
It’s interesting that Weld has said nice things about Clinton while Johnson has not. Weld called Trump “totally unfit to be president” and said Clinton was “a perfectly reputable, professional, responsible candidate for president of the United States and deserves to be treated as such.”
yehudayonaParticipantSince someone mentioned the DD’s under Rabbi Mehlman, I’ll add some other data points. There’s a kosher DD/BR in Oak Park, MI. The whole store is under the hashgacha of the Vaad Harabonim of Detroit. The DD’s under the Vaad of the 5 Towns do not include BR.
yehudayonaParticipantForgot to mention that Huma Abedin isn’t an Arab. She’s on Indian/Pakistani descent.
yehudayonaParticipantProbably not in a Spanish speaking country either, given the misspelling of cinco.
yehudayonaParticipantiacisrmma: But most BR stores are not under hashgacha. The OP asked about “any location.” Obviously if the store is under a hashgacha you trust (and you use chalav stam), you can eat the ice cream there.
RedQuest, I believe there is a topic here on Starbucks. You can also check the Star-K website, which has a handy chart on their recommendations for Starbucks (click on lists and resources, the look at kosher lists).
yehudayonaParticipantagutyar (which it certainly isn’t for the U.S. in terms of the election): You’re not just spouting a discredited conspiracy theory, you’re trumping it. First, her name is Huma (unlike Obama, she’s not from the place where they hula dance). Even the conspiracy theorists (five congresscritters, including Michele Bachmann, ‘nuf said) claimed her father, mother, and brother were connected to the Muslim Brotherhood, not that she headed it (it’s pretty hard to believe they’d ever be headed by a woman). That wild-eyed liberal, John McCain said, “The letter and the report offer not one instance of an action, a decision or a public position that Huma has taken while at the State Department that would lend credence to the charge that she is promoting anti-American activities within our government….These attacks on Huma have no logic, no basis and no merit.”
yehudayonaParticipantKapporos is a mitzvah? I thought it was a minhag.
yehudayonaParticipantSo how do balabatish shabbos shoes differ from non-balabatish shabbos shoes? Less pointy?
yehudayonaParticipantI googled R’ Zilber and found an announcement of his petira from YWN in 2008. One of the comments says the sefer is Oz Nidbiru, not Oz Nidviru.
yehudayonaParticipantJoseph, I think everyone would agree that your Shabbos-driving cheeseburger eater isn’t frum. But what about someone who watches TV and movies, has an unfiltered smartphone, and doesn’t check vegetables for bugs?
yehudayonaParticipantAbba_S, there’s an article on the Ohr Somayach website entitled “Thou shalt not read thy neighbors’ email?” The author says he asked Rabbi Chaim Pinchas Scheinberg.
They may be government servers, but it was private (very private!) email. If you says government servers are exempt, why isn’t snail mail delivered by the government exempt?
Joseph, you didn’t answer my second question.
yehudayonaParticipantJoseph: “Additionally non-frum Jews aren’t protected as frum Jews are by Jewish law. For many protections they fall under the same category as gentiles.”
So it’s OK to speak lashon hara about non-frum Jews? How do you delineate who’s frum and who’s not?
Abba_S, are you claiming that emails are not protected by Rabbeinu Gershom’s ruling? Rav Scheinberg ZTL disagreed with you.
October 31, 2016 1:37 pm at 1:37 pm in reply to: Do you think Jewish men should start practicing polygamy again? #1190969yehudayonaParticipantAbba_S, in some parts of the world, polygamy is widely practiced. Are you saying that all those polygamists are crazy?
yehudayonaParticipantA Trump supporter in Des Moines was arrested when she tried to vote for him a second time. She said the polls are rigged and she was afraid her first vote would be switched to Clinton. It’s not clear if she thought her second vote would also be switched.
October 31, 2016 3:54 am at 3:54 am in reply to: Being asked if you're dressed up for Halloween #1189078yehudayonaParticipantReminds me of the time my wife and daughters were out delivering shalach manos. My wife saw a young women wearing weird clothes and wished her a freilichen Purim. Apparently she looked confused. My daughters explained to my wife that the young woman wasn’t Jewish.
yehudayonaParticipantLF, I don’t want to speak for LUL, but an obvious reason for a woman to talk to somebody else’s husband is to make a polite request (pass the salt, don’t park in the driveway, etc.)
yehudayonaParticipantLUL, isn’t a thrown apple likely to get bruised?
yehudayonaParticipantSo “herr nur” is basically “hey you.” I don’t think my wife would like me to call her “hey you” when we’re with non-family.
LUL, what if they want their spouse’s attention? “My wife, please pass the salt?”
yehudayonaParticipantBaltimore isn’t listed in the Wikipedia article on Yeshivas Rabbeinu Yisrael Meir HaKohen. FWIW, there are affiliates in Cherry Hill and Manalapan.
yehudayonaParticipantprof, why does throwing apples show more love than passing them out?
yehudayonaParticipantChafetz Chaim is in Kew Gardens Hills, Queens, not in Brooklyn.
yehudayonaParticipantAnd here I thought the video was about destroying iPhones.
yehudayonaParticipantAbba_S, mixed seating in Gan Eden?! Chas v’sholom! Look what happened last time man and woman interacted in Gan Eden. I think it’s in this week’s parsha.
yehudayonaParticipantMy basement keeps my sukkah safe from the elements.
yehudayonaParticipantiacisrmma, you say CC musmachim may go into places with no frum infrastructure (which I read as no orthodox shul, no mikveh, etc.). Do you have any examples? I believe all the CC branches have been in places where there already were frum Jews, but obviously a CC musmach can strike out on his own.
ZD, I think it would have been better to say “guys appropriate for you and guys not appropriate for you” than to say “good guys…and not such good guys.”
October 26, 2016 3:53 am at 3:53 am in reply to: Do you think Jewish men should start practicing polygamy again? #1190917yehudayonaParticipanthuju, try again. Not oragami, not oregami, but origami.
