I see lot of holiness and unholiness on Purim. It depends on the persons aspirations, not what they are now.

in reply to: I'm anti Zionist now #1158239

There is a lot of anti Semitism in this thread. Some is even “blind, naked, anti Semitism”, based on the intelligence quotient of the comments. I think that anyone will agree that preventing someone from working is forcing poverty. Unless you have an ulterior motive. Such as an anti charedi one.

in reply to: Giving Alcohol to Minors on Purim #1063033

Although I would say there is a significant difference in the physical makeup of an average fourteen year old and nineteen year old, which can impact their ability to be able to safely handle an abnormal amount of alcohol. People who serve to minors already intoxicated can be charged with endangerment if anything chas veshalom happens, and I don’t know if all the askanim would run to save that person. If you are going to serve; serve wine, not schnapps. Most people have enough to drink themselves, and what you giver them is probably on top of that. Consider that if you offer, (especially to boys collecting), they may feel uncomfortable refusing.

Health crazy: I don’t think it makes a difference to Hashem to sustain 100 families or 500. I also think there is nothing wrong with supporting yourself with government programs. I don’t want to sound like a racist, do I won’t give examples, but does anyone really think the other people taking advantage deserve it more? In response to the person who said a hundred years if progress have been undone; that is correct,a hundred years ago kollel was also looked down upon as foolish.

Ha ha moderators, he deserved that “thnx” which he really didn’t ask for! Very good! (I assumed shpitzfrum is male, although I probably should’ve stuck to “it”to be safe.)

Gilda: in the modern world there is a new invention, it’s called “humor”.

in reply to: Kollel Life – Reality? #1065955

As Reb Moshe used to say: Among the people that were moser nefesh to keep shabbos in America, some of the families children remained frum and some didn’t. The ones that used to say “It’s so hard to keep shabbos. We have to give up our jobs for it.”, had their kids go off. The ones that said “Shabbos is so special, we even give up our jobs for it”, had their kids remain frum. I’m seeing both sentiments in this thread regarding kollel.

in reply to: Kollel Life – Reality? #1065924

How many kollel families in America are starving? In Eretz Yisrael it’s much too common. We have to do something. How can we go on with or peaceful(ish) lives while our brothers starve?

    in reply to: subtitle #1057344

Post something addressed to the moderators with a request for a subtitle (ex: moderator, please make my subtitle Brisker Shittos with the REAL Mesorah.) If you ask nicely, you should get what you ask for. Your request is guaranteed to be seen, being that every post you submit must be read and approved for public viewing.

Rebyid: you gave me the same answer when I wanted a subtitle.

Moderators: thanks again for the one you gave me. 🙂 I always wondered what time you stay up till, based on the times some of the stuff get posted. Thanks for your dedication.

Daas yochid: you are correct. Holding out for a shver with money, besides for being an unrealistic solution, won’t marry of my daughter. Maybe at some point in the next couple of years I’ll win the lottery, but at this point, I’m not the shver with money people are looking for. I have bitachon that things will work out.

in reply to: Why I'm an Ama'aretz #1060477

Thanks for the maareh makom. This really belongs there, not here: The yeshiva bochurim had to go to a chasunah in Williamsburg. They called up a car service and asked how much it would cost. The car service said “$35”. In search of a better deal, they called up the pizza store across the street. They ordered a pie for $15, to be delivered to Williamsburg. When the delivery guy was getting into the van, they asked him if he happened to be going near Williamsburg. Amazingly enough, that was exactly where he was going! They got a ride to Williamsburg, paid for the pizza, and walked off.

If your learning is completely dependent on someones support, you should probably find a job. Life happens, and you don’t want to be left holding the bag without a clue how to take care of yourself.

in reply to: Why I'm an Ama'aretz #1060473

How many times did you say the word “Shema”? You can get thrown out for being careless about mitzvos.

in reply to: Kollel Life – Reality? #1065881

In general, it’s possible to find a bare bones basement in Brooklyn for under $1100 for a couples starter apartment. I’m not sure about lakewood. (I think I have four years to find out, and I’m not looking forward. Chas veshalom,I daven about shidduchim regularly, and hope the hardest part will be the money. There are many parents that wish they had to put together money for an upcoming chasunah.) In general, if the couple can put together a down payment, I recommend them to buy a house as soon as possible, and rent it out until they need it. The cost of refinancing usually equals two months rent, so you have limited risk involved.

in reply to: FREEZER OPENING #1058199

Some think the freezer extends the age gap by a year, but it is debatable. The age gap itself is debatable. The only thing universally accepted is that shidduchim is impossible without a lot of siyatah dishmayah, and that we must daven that all seeking singles in Klal Yisrael see a yeshuah bekarov.

in reply to: mishloach manos on purim, teaching kids? #1057266

They disagree because the shulchan aruch and poskim talk about pitfalls of drinking, but not the pitfalls of mishloach manos. It may not be recommended to overdo it, but its definitely not an aveirah, nor does it directly cause any. (For the record, I do drink on Purim.)

Do three monologues in sequence equal a conversation?

in reply to: Why do YOU want Moshiach to come? #1058606

Can we PLEASE not turn this into a zionist/anti-zionist/anti anti-zionist thread? We all serve the same Ribbono Shel Olam, and this conversation is for gedolim, not for us. Anyone worthy of weighing in on the issue is not posting on the CR.

in reply to: lakewood girls schools #1059690

Sorry,I just noticed one of my things got posted twice. I don’t know how that happened, but I apologize.

I deleted the duplicate. It is not a big deal; we call it doublepostitis, and it happens when the send button is hit twice.

A more creative mother, not wealthy father. And even though this is almost a carbon copy of the drinking thread, it’ll never become as popular, simply die to the fact that its not controversial enough. There is a limited amount of damage fancy mishloach manos can do, and the issue is not really a Purim issue, its a general “keeping up with the Cohens” issue.

in reply to: Superbowl Parties #1136366

This post is not discussing if the superbowl is good or bad, its discussing if its better or worse. So the real question is a list of kosher outlets. No one is going to say marijuana is okay because its better than heroin. However, if there was a need, for whatever reason, for a mind altering drug, marijuana would be a better choice. The question is if there us a need and if there are better choices.

in reply to: Why do YOU want Moshiach to come? #1058597

Being as we are not turning this into a zionist/anti zionist thread, we will pretend that we didn’t see that last comment.

in reply to: Kollel Life – Reality? #1065856

Okay rabboisai, this is getting nasty. Someone asked for advice on leading a kollel lifestyle, and we are gutting that person in her face. I think the ideal is beautiful, and Hashem will definitely provide. Al pi derech hateva it IS doable, contrary to popular belief, if you are willing to scrimp on Olam Hazeh for a greater purpose. Its the best investment you’ll ever make. We’re rooting for you!

in reply to: Kollel Life – Reality? #1065833

No one “sees” a fellow boy since tenth grade. This is definitely derech chibah. That being said, I am not here to judge, just to clarify. And oomis, kollel is doable without parental support, as long as you have realistic standards. Are you going to say the same about every mono income family? If you say I’m gonna go on vacation to Florida for a week and my seminary teacher said Hashem will provide, then you may have a bit of a problem.

in reply to: Are Borsalino hats more stylish than other fedoras? #1056954

Its a $50-$75 difference, not $100-$150. If it lasts six months longer, (2 years instead of 1.5), them after six years you’ve already broken even. Its lav davka wasting money. And the issue isn’t just yeshiva boys, many of us adults have the same question when buying a hat, with money that we earned.

Btw DY: did you last in Brisk through Rosh Hashanah? I always wanted to know what Briskers do with their peyos during Tekias Shofar. Do they put them behind their ears like their tallis, or do they keep then out? (And I thought you only get thrown out if your peyos are too thin, not too short?)

in reply to: Why do YOU want Moshiach to come? #1058587

I’m sure this was said already in the post, but three concept of davening for moshiach to relive Hashem’s tzar its straight out of Nefesh HaChaim, among others. Its not exactly kefirah. Of course we all have personal reasons also. By the way,al pi derech hateva we are rugged. And I mean DEAD DEAD DEAD. Iran is coming out with nuclear bombs to wipe Israel off the map, Europe is on a daily basis becoming less and less of a viable option for a continued Jewish presence, America is becoming more anti semetic constantly, and the Arabs who want us dead have us out numbered 100 to 1 (a conservative number, 1.4 billion to 14 million). This should be of comfort for those who want a guarantee that he is coming soon, Am Yisrael will never disappear, and moshiach is fast becoming the only realistic option. Strange how our impending destruction is a source of solace.
