The proof to the fact their beliefs are garbage, lies in the fact that they find the need to persuade others in their beliefs.
We are so confident in our beliefs that we dont need to missionarise others – we know that the beliefs talk for themselves.
They however know that their garbage wont attract anyone unless they use persuasive skills!

yaff80ParticipantIt is assur to speak whilst wearing Teffilin AND between putting on the shel yad and shel Rosh.
I understand the question to be: May one speak once the shel rosh have been removed but the shel yad is still on?
Not that it is right, I have seen som people who raise their shel rosh slightly off their head so they can speak, and put back in situ when they have finished talking!
The story is told about the Rebbe in the city of Sanz who saw some bochurim talking during davening on chol hamoed. The story goes that the rebbe said it is better to wear teffilin on chol hamoed and not talk during davening, than to not wear teffilin but to talk. It appears that some people who are descendants from the kehilla of sanz have the minhag therefore that bochurim wear teffilin on chol hamoed but married men do not!
Can anyone confirm this story?
yaff80ParticipantP.B.A:
1) Why didnt you mention to them the health issue for those that have allergies to milky products?
2) To say the halacha requires to wait 6 hours is a clear mistake. The halacha states a person should wait between meat and milk. period. Then came a discussion how long to wait. The minimum is 1 hour, machmirim wait into the sixth hour and those who are more stringent than that leave a gap of 6 full hours. The 6 hour wait is not halacha but minhag!
3) If the hechsher group were not aware there was milk in the product, does this not make it chashash chalav akum?

You seem to have taken offence, so I will explain.
What I meant was, that if someone thinks a person who learns in such a yeshiva is not frum enough for them, they would not IMO be a good match anyways. So perhaps this guy went to that yeshiva in order to avoid people thinking they are a good match for those narrower minded people.
In any ways, I am happily married with kids, so I think I have been through the parsha!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yaff80ParticipantHiding in the closet.
I know of one teacher who got wind that the class were planning on hiding in the closet, so as he walked into class, he casualy walked over to the closet, locked it, sat down and had a peaceful session with the few that couldnt fit into the closet!
Daring, but cool!
I know of another, where the class were plotting something, so the teacher asked a substitute to walk in as if the sub was taking the session – giving the kids a feeling of “what a waste”. After a couple of minutes the real teacher walked in!

yaff80Participant????? ??? ?????? bring the reason for the common ???? to add a licht per child in the family.

My wifes maternal grandmother had this ???? but her mother is too much of a ???? so only lights the minimum. When we were married I asked our Rov what my wife should do. yaff80Participant“Having a short vacation for the Chagim makes sense but ten weeks per year is exaggerated”
I am not a full time learner, but I can “Fargin” their 10 weeks holiday, and dont think its excessive.
If you were to add up all the Sundays, bank holidays,Yom tov days and other holidays that working people have, you get more than 10 weeks. 52 Sundays is already the equavalent of 7 weeks!
Full time learners learn every Sunday, every bankholiday and dont get off any extra holidays.
In balance, they deserve a break, yes every moment of the 10 weeks they get, to recharge their batteries.

yaff80ParticipantI also love the Artscroll ones.
A few years ago I bought the one called “???? ??????” which is a compilation of many midrashim on the parsha of ????? ????? and the ???? itself, although as mentioned earlier, the seder night is not the time for looking at ??????. Preparation is key.
A well prepared leader, collates all the knowledge beforehand and plans how and when they will deliver each piece of information.
I personally like this ???? as it concentrates on what happened thereby fulfilling what it says ?? ????? ???? ?????? ????? ??? ?? ?????. (I personally dont like the lomdish vorts like why it says “??” not “???” etc. That is not for seder night IMO).

yaff80ParticipantOpposite Mir Yeshiva in Jerushalayim there was a coffee shop that was called “Makom Bli Shem” (place without a name). I beleive its no longer around.
Rumour has it, the guy couldnt think of a name so he asked R’ Chaim Kanievsky what to call it. R’ Chaim said “Bli shem” hence its name “Makom Bli Shem”!
yaff80ParticipantPostal:
I struggle to appreciate your rationale. If a divorced guy (DG) has a pool of Divorced women (DW) as an option, then dws have a pool of dgs. Meaning, if a dg marries a dw then automatically a dw is marrying a dg. therefore it stands to reason that dgs and dws have equal chances with each other.
Therefore the only advantage for dg over dw – according to what you were trying to suggest – is the “availablity” of unmarried women to dgs whereas there are few unmarried men for dws!
As for the serious thought you mention at the end, IMO no-one in their right mind will opt to remain in an unstable marriage especially if it involves violence, just because of someones non-scientific survey on what is available in the market and some ones theory of their remarriage chances?!
yaff80ParticipantLike oomis1105’s idea as well as Shticky Guys. B”H/unfortunately I am happily married so cannot try out the engagement one. Perhaps it could be adjusted to a sudden move to a “competiting” school?
I made a wordsearch for my class, promised them a reward for each kid that found all the words. Problem was I made sure NON of the words existed there! Took about ten minutes for the first bright spark to say “Are these words here or is it a Purim shtick!”
My class requested I come a few minutes late into class. They hung up a notice on the door stating “Cooking up a purim shtick”
As I entered they all stood at the back of the room with saucepans on their heads, one kid had an apron and chefs hat on, with a spachelor and large pot in his hand. Was really cute!
yaff80ParticipantWhats ironic is, when a litvak turns chasidish, the chasidim try to console the family by sayin “we’re are all bonim of Hashem”, “its all the same Torah etc”.
However when a chasid turns litvish, they get into a frenzy as though the world was collapsing!
So to what extent is it the same Torah?

yaff80ParticipantInteresting post.
As someone wo married a Geordy (person born in Gateshead) I can tell you that as far as I am aware, Manchester is the fastest growing community in Europe, not Gateshead.
As for the community, it is warm, caring and heimish. However you must be aware that it is not for everyone. The kehilla is very litvish and yeshivish. There is nothing there that caters for anyone outside of these style of life.
Also being close knit, you may not appreciate everyone knowing your business if you are a private type of person.
If you are really considering it as an option, I recommend you rent an apartment there for a few weeks to see if it meets your requirements and tastes.

yaff80ParticipantI can give you what to do.
I am doing an MA and have too little time to produce my next assignment. Wanna do it for me?
yaff80ParticipantA colleague of mine married off a son recently out of town. I received an invitation to the chupa and ??? ?????. I assumed that he ahd a large family and was limited on space. I was also delighted that I would not have to travel out of town after a long days work.
Well a few weeks before the wedding he calls me up and asks me if I was planing on joining in the simcha. I said that I wasnt invited to the dinner. He said it must have been a mistake by the one who filled the envelopes, as he had instructed them to put me on the dinner list, and that he would really like to see me there. Now I had no option but to go!
Whats better, not to be invited, or to be invited and feel you MUST attend?
yaff80Participantas far as I know you dont make that b’racha unless you see them in real life!
yaff80ParticipantThe best thing about the truth is you dont have to ahve a good memory. (Winston Churchill)
He had many good lines.
A famous one was in parliament a lady said to him “if you were my husband I would poison your tea” Not one to be beaten, he replied “and if you were my wife, I would drink it!”
The path to hell is paved with good intentions.

yaff80ParticipantLast time I checked, the mishna in Avos discussed this issue…..
AL TISTAKEIL B’KANKAN, ELAH B’MAH SH’YESH BOI” (Do not judge the jug, only by whats inside it)
L’havdil, they have a similar saying in English…..
“Never judge a book by its cover”
(Yes I know people are not books – so please dont reply in that vain!)
yaff80ParticipantI dont get it. Do they sell shadchanim in the local hypermarket? I guess you get what you pay for!
If the famous saying “Pay peanuts and you’ll get monkeys” is true, I would be put off a cheap shadchan. Who wants to marry a monkey? (unless you shtam from darwin!)
In my times, you didnt choose a shadchan. The guy who succeeds in suggesting the right match, gets paid for his/her services. It wasnt something you could choose.
yaff80ParticipantI am not convinced that you are yoitze matonos la’evyoinim with donations to moisdes. The mitzva is to give money to an oni. Yes moisdes are in desperate need for money, but they are not poor PEOPLE! You must give them mnoey on purim because of kol hapoishet yad noisnim lo, but you must still give money to poor people to make their purim a happier one!
The Halacha states that matanois la’evyoinim is so important that one should minimise in seuda and mishloach manos and give more matonois la’evyoinim.
I have seen – as others have mentione – people giving donations to a moisod and informing those they normallly send mishloach manos, that this year they have given a donation to tzedaka instead of sending so many packages. This fits into the halacha very well!
yaff80ParticipantOf Course:
Why are we held liable for “the scarcity of boys available to them, due to the insanely uneven ratio”.
Is this shortage of of boys as a result of something we have done? I believe Hashem would never hold someone accountable for something which is totally beyond their control.
Get real. Please explain your post with a sensible explanation……
yaff80ParticipantAl Kiddush Hashem!
March 15, 2011 7:37 pm at 7:37 pm in reply to: All Wife's Money & Properties Belong to Husband #750342yaff80ParticipantIts no-wonder divorce rates are so high. Marriage is an equal partnership not king and maidservant.
A man is to treat his wife as queen, and she is to treat him as king.
Taking a stronghold on finances could be a form of abuse.
Having separate accounts, you may as well live separatly and meet up occssionaly for meals.
Marriage should be done as a life long commitment, not with your eyes on divorce in a few years time. Working things out at the start of a marriage with arrangements in place for a divorce, sends a message to each other that divorce is on the cards, and its a matter of “when” not “if”
As for the original question: “what is the practical effect of this halacha?” I think the answer lies in what the property produces in the interim. Lets say the lady brings in a tree at the time of marriage, the tree belong to the husband whilst they are married. When they call it quits, the tree returns to the lady, but any fruits that were produced during their time together, belong to him. A modern example? Say she owns a property at the time of marriage, the property belongs to the husband whilst they are married. When they end it, the property returns to the lady, but any rental income during their time together, belong to him.
Also I think it makes a difference regarding the $100 bill she finds on the street.
yaff80Participantm in Israel: “Your calculations are not taking into account the down payment. Although it is true that when you rent you are “throwing away” that money, a big portion of those payments, especially in the beginning are to pay interest on your loan, which is also money thrown away”.
I stated clearly in my post: “If you have the downpayment, then it certainly makes more sense financially to buy”.
I wrote my comment based on the way the market works in the UK. Here tax is paid the same as a renter or as an owner. It is charged to the occupier. There is a tax however at the time of purchase which is either 1% or 2% depending on the value of the purchase. I would include this in purchase costs, not in the upkeep of a property. We could get a mortgage with a 25% downpayment and the repayments are invariably similar to rent charges, if not cheaper!
Yes houses are ganavim and they eat up money in repairs etc, but its like an animal. The more you feed it, the fatter it gets, the more you receive in return when you sell it on!
