It’s illegal for government employees to accept tips. Your generous thoughtful gifts to your spouses and children can be considered tips and are legal.

I’ve heard Biden answer questions and never seen any signs of dementia. On the other hand Trump’s vocabulary and sentence structure have declined over recent years. He has his unique words such as “biggly” , spoke about Yo Semite, claimed the American troops took the airports from the Redcoats in 1775, and claimed the flu epidemic of 1917 brought an end 2 World War 2. Trump also spoke of “tippy toppy” missiles. I hope they don’t tip over from being top heavy. Trump even forgot that he Kew Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal and in 2016 claimed he didn’t know who David Duke was although he spoke of Duke several years earlier. It’s well known among his former business associates that he has a short attention span, often described as that of a flea or fruit fly.
If it’s not dementia, it must be extreme ignorance.

The steal is Trump conning his supporters out of money to pay for the election challenges. Reading the fine print on the solicitation makes it clear that very little to going to the court costs, much is lining Trump’s pockets, A question recently posed was why don’t Trump and his children fund the election challenge since they are reputed to be billionaires? Don’t they believe in the cause?

Yvette Clarke has been an invisible Member of Congress during most of her time serving. Her claim to fame is her statement on a late night TV show that slavery ended in Brooklyn in the 1880’s.

Chaim Deustch is a sincere man who started Flatbush Shomrim years ago, worked for elected officials and is presently serving in City Council. We could do much worse than Chaim. If the community actually votes he has a good chjasnce of winning.

If elected the contest for his City Council seat will be interesting.

Local draft boards do exist in New York with one Board for each zip code. There are vacancies on numerous boards. Those interested in applying should check the Selective Service website. I have served on a draft board for over 20 years. I am aware of other frum Yiddin including Chassidim serving on Boards in Brooklyn. I serve because I feel our presence of members of our community is necessary We no longer have in person annual training due to budget constraints, but are kept informed of changes and receive online refresher training. If the draft is reinstated I assure you we are ready.

My first house in Flatbush cost $35,900 in 1974 when I was earning about $10,000 a year. Typical Flatbush houses ranged in price at that time from $50,000 – $65,000. Keep in mind the mortgage rates were 8.5% in 1974 and as high as 17% in the spring of 1980. Back then real estate taxes were much lower in NYC than in the suburbs but have now quickly crept up. Two bedroom apartments were available for under $300 in those years. A couple earning both minimum wage could afford an apartment and middle class families could afford homes.

I only have observations, not answers. I don’t see the end of the Flatbush community, but the graying of it which has more of an impact on the yeshivot than the shuls. Perhaps as large numbers of aging homeowners downsize house prices will drop. The young Sefardim are in the same predicament as the Litvish. Not all Sefardim are wealthy.

A driveway is meant to be used to drive into or out of a garage. There is also a “parking” pad which doesn’t lead to a garage. And of course there are numerous illegal curb cuts and illegal front lawn parking.

It’s about the $$$. The conservative temple has dwindling membership and the school is spending $5 million on renovations to the school building. I would assume it’s taxpayers money. They are treating their temple as a business where the almighty dollar reigns supreme.
EMJC was late in adopting the new stream of the conservative movement with egalitarian prayer and musical instruments on Shabbos and it appears that these changes did not boost membership which has been on decline for years.
They should sell as the reform temple on Avenue R & East 16th did years ago and the conservative temple on Ocean Avenue and Avenue I did. There is little market for their brand.

I haven’t see Canadian Club in a great many years. Years ago it was commonly served in shuls along with Seagrams. Try a dram of single malt and you’ll see what you’re missing. In keeping with the chassidish minhag it goes great between the fish and the meat on Shabbos Kodesh.

in reply to: Illegal curb cuts and NO PARKING signs in Boro Park #1648250
    yaakov doe
    Participant

There are “parking pads” and “driveways” in NYC, Neither is allowed unless it’s at least 18′ deep from the legal curb cut. Curb cuts require permits and it is illegal to paint any markings on the city street or city owned curb. Parking in front yards is never permitted. The illegal curb cuts contribute to the parking nightmare in Boro Park and deprive motorists of legal curbside parking spaces. From time to time the issue of serious enforcement to crack down on the illegal curb cuts comes up in City Council and within the Buildings Department which is the agency with enforcement responsibility., and it appears that a new enforcement initiative is coming soon.
