A lawyer defending a man accused of burglary tried this creative defense: “My client merely inserted his arm into the window and removed a few trifling articles. His arm is not himself, and I fail to see how you can punish the whole individual for an offence committed by his limb.”

“Well put,” the judge replied. “Using your logic, I sentence the defendant’s arm to one year’s imprisonment. He can accompany it or not, as he chooses.” The defendant smiled. With his lawyer’s assistance he detached his artificial limb, laid it on the bench, and walked out.

If that really happened it would be great!

“Hence why I don’t participate at weddings. No one needs to see me pretend to be dancing when I’m really just making a fool of myself.

I do that well enough just by breathing… I don’t have to compound it by dancing. I’d rather just fade back into the corner somewhere — far away from the dancing and the shtick.*”

Please stop putting yourself down, its a pain for others to have to read it and its likely assur as well so please stop it. The more negativity you write about yourself the worse you will feel and you make us feel weird and uncomfortable for reading it.

If you have issues with your self confidence, please get them addressed on your own cheshbon not on ours! Thanks!

What does that mean? You have some blessing? Is Hashem lacking in some way? I still dont see how it means I am blessing You. The Hebrew is incorrect if we were saying I am blessing you. If you wanted to bless someone you would say Ani Mevarechecha or something like that. I think the word Baruch is a noun its a statement of fact that whoever it is we speak of is blessed.

Besides, even though it could possibly be translated that way it is illogical and erroneous to think that that is the correct definition. Hashem lacks nothing so how can you bless Him? You would have to be nuts to think Hashem needs your “blessing.” Define “You Hashem are blessed” in a way that makes sense.

You are correct. I was saying both points, 1 that I believe that lotto isnt Hishtadlus for us common folk and 2. winning the lottery isnt necessarily a good thing.

Hishtadlus is working to make a living. Lotto is spending your money on entertainment.

Statistics show that most people who win the lotto end up ruining their lives.

    Read this:

The authors of a book about how success often destroys families, Begin and LePage said they know firsthand the destruction sudden wealth can cause.

Begin said he has had a couple of lottery winner clients, and has studied and worked with people whose net worth is $5 million or more.

Statistics show lottery winners often go bankrupt, get divorced and have family feuds, he said.

Part of the problem is that many lottery winners are average Joes who have no experience handling huge sums of money. So, they buy and invest without realizing what it will cost to maintain the houses they buy or to pay their taxes.

You need to call all the stores and compare prices. Additionally they dont all have the same hats. Bencraft for example has a great selection but you will pay full price. Its not a low end store. Try Ferster, Kova or others you will probably do better there if looking to save $.

Wolf said it very well. It has to be a good fit for your child.

Take into account things like class size and individualized attention, are the Rabbeim known to be open and friendly, do they get a kesher with the boys? What kind of boys go there? Are they cliquey or snobby or more accepting…?

See if you can talk to boys who went to the school recently or are currently there that will give you tons of insights.

I dont play Lotto because my personal understanding of how Hashem operates, is that he wants man to earn his money because we appreciate what we work for and therefore anyone He really loves and cares about, He will not give them the money via lotto.

With you I think the only thing we would agree on is that we disagree. Lol.

All kidding aside, you are right 2 people in the same situation can find common ground. That doesnt mean they will agree on things. For example 2 people can be in a predicament but both will have a different understanding of what happened and why. 2 people can hear the same conversation and walk away with different conclusions.

The point is that when we say Baruch Ata Hashem we arent saying Ani Maverachecha Hashem, but rather Baruch Ata Hashem, You, Hashem are Baruch. What does that mean You Hashem are Baruch? You Hashem are blessing. But thats still not English. So fill in the blanks You Hashem are the source of all blessing.

Hashem is the source of EVERYTHING. Every Middoh that we humans perceive and possess come from Hashem but He is the source. You know the concept of middos is about trying to emulate Hashem, Ma Hu Rachum Af Atah Rachum…Of course one needs to learn how to go about all that but thats the purpose and derech to middah refinement.

    “Single Frum female girls?

Yea, we have more than youd care to admit in common.”

Oh so does that mean that I have so much in common with every single frum male?

Everyone has their personality type, their level of frumkeit and their Hashkafos as well as interests and hobbies. There are plenty guys my age and single who I have very little in common with, we have totally different interests. They would love nothing better than to spend a day watching movies or sitting on the beach, for me Id rather read or hear something spiritually inspiring and enlightening, or hear a great piece of music…

Theres a reason why people are generally good friends with others who are similar to them in interests, Hashkafos…

The point is that Bracha comes from the word Breicha which means source or wellspring. Blessed is a mistake, its an English mistranslation. The Avudraham explains that Baruch is like Rachum, Chanun….its an expression of an aspect of our perception of Hashem.

Dont worry, I post a lot of Torah here because I believe I can inspire others. Im not like this on a date.

On a date I wouldnt do this,vI know it would be excessive but I would probably say a vort, or talk about spiritual “subjects.” I am who I am and thats not going to change. I believe the Torah contains everything and has the answers to all that ails us in todays society so if I know an appropriate vort to address an issue I will mention it.

When you say stuff like “I’m not qualified to talk about anything in a thread about self-esteem… so forget I said anything.”

When you say things like that it really makes me want to talk some sense into you. I dont know if you really have a low self esteem or not, but if you do, your self esteem can grow by working on it. Read the dvar Torah that I brought above from the Chasam Sofer, Hashem believes in you, how dare you not believe in you?!

If Hashem gave you life that means He knows that you can be great and do great things. For those who have no purpose left to accomplish they are taken from this world. You have greatness inside you and Hashem today has given you the opportunity to grow and polish yourself and reveal more of that greatness to yourself, to your family and to those you come in contact with.

As others have said, that is the “literal meaning.”

It should come as no surprise to you that the words in our prayers require more than just translating the word, the meaning of a phrase is different than the meaning of an individual word. Meaning, the word Baruch alone means blessed but in the context of Baruch ata Hashem it takes on a slightly different or more absolute meaning.

Its a basic concept that things cant be translated literally without understanding the context. Every pasuk Chumash is loaded with meaning (which is why we have teh Oral Law/Talmud…Medrash)

The Torah was written in a brief form, so was the Mishna and Gemara, the Brachos and prayers were formulated by the Sages, they knew how to condense many layers of meaning into as short a verse or phrase as possible.

He’s saying (I believe) that depression is a physical/mental ailment and not a spiritual one.

There are 2 types of depression. One that is a mental condition due to some inborn mental imbalance, and a depression that comes from the way a person is living their life.

The depression that comes of living an unfulfilled life is a spiritual depression that requires a spiritual awakening inside the person.

A Rabbi and some mussar seforim can heal a spiritual depression.

I have some real good ones.

This one is a no brainer, when someone creates a new thread there has to be an option to EDIT the thread. Theres no edit option and many times threads get started with gross misspellings in titles or the person who started it realized that there was more they wanted to add to the first post and its too late. You should give a minimum 10 minute window to edit the thread. Additionally, there should be an option to trash a thread. If someone creates a thread and then has “Charata” a minute or 2 later there should be an option to delete it from the system or something.

    2. The Latest Discussions opening page should have maybe an additional 10-15 most recent topics because as the site grows and more and more people join and start threads you ca have threads from a few hours ago that disappeared from the Latest Discussions page.

Heres something to boost all of our self esteems’

Modeh Ani: Chasam Sofer – Because Hashem Believes In You!

Day after day we struggle through our challenges. A bracha here, a favor there, making time for Torah, a kind word, restraining from Lashon Hara, and on and on with and all the daily challenges we face. Some days are better than others but we are far from angels. Night after night our tarnished Neshamos go up to Shamayim showing off our daily mitzvos but also in need of a good cleansing from the dirt that accumulated that day.

Our bodies lie lifeless in our beds each morning waiting for Hashem to return our refreshed and clean Neshama to us and give us a new day of life. But why should He? Are we so fantastic that Hashem owes it to us for what we have done for Him? No. Did we do something in the past that proves that we are up to today’s challenges and will do Hashem proud without causing Him any anguish? Probably not.

Well, Hashem see things otherwise. The last two words of Modeh Ani are Rabba Emunasecha. This is normally translated to mean that our faith in Hashem is great and we are confident that He will give us another day of life, regardless of the score. However points out the Chasam Sofer, Emunasecha may not be the correct word for that context. Instead he offers a mind boggling and encouraging thought that should give us the Chizzuk and strength to truly make this day a great one. Rabba Emunasecha means “Your faith” is great. We are granted another extension on our visa in this world because Hashem believes in us. He knows we can come through today and He is willing to bet another day of life to prove it. If Hashem believes it, it must be true. No more excuses, our days can all be perfect!

The truth is, it sounds like you may be a high stress person and tend to stress yourself out. Maybe the idea is for you to work on becoming more patient. I believe Rabbi Zelig Pliskin has a book on Patience that may be worth reading. His books are all good. Or listen to shiurim on the topic.

Theres also a book by a non Jewish author Richard Carlson called

Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff–and it’s all small stuff. Supposed to be an amazing book.

But the bottom line is that when you start getting stressed, think about it and ask yourself, is it worth it? Is this so important that I need to get all bent out of shape over it? Will I let the traffic, or my co worker or whatever it is control me? No! I control me, Im cool and in control. Talk it out if you are in private and have that luxury. Realize its a momentary and insignificant annoyance (in most cases) that will soon pass. Find something else to think about. Distract yourself.

In reality most things we fret about or get stressed about are insignificant and minor issues. Traffic, long lines at the grocery…Be positive and grateful and happy that you have a car to drive, that you can afford a car, that it works and doesnt break down every day. That it isnt overly noisy and isnt a piece of junk. That its nice…theres always positive things you can focus on.

By the way if you often find yourself stuck in traffic make sure you have either a nice variety of music that you like, to listen to or find interesting shiurim, or lectures on various things that you can use to entertain you. The car ride can be an experience of Torah growth if you listen to a Torah shiur, and at the same time, if you control yourself from getting angry and stressed you are working on your character traits and improving your middos. Your commute becomes an exercise in building the middah of patience and self control under stressful conditions.

The first pasuk of Parshas VaEira start “Vayidaber Elokim” and ends “VaYomer Hashem”. Rav Avrohom Pam brings from the Magid Meisharim, that Hashem was angry at Moshe for questioning his treatment of Bnei Yisroel in Mitzrayim and therefore used the harsh terminology of Vayidaber couple with Hashem’s name of Din, Elokim. However since Hashem knew that Moshe only did this out of great care for Klal Yisroel, He then quickly switched to the softer language of “Vayomer”, together with the Shem Hashem used for Rachamim.

And what was Hashem’s answer to Moshe? That He appeared to the Avos with name “Kel Shakai”. Rav Pam explains that the name Shakkai means enough. This was the name used after the world was created to stop it from further growth which would have gone on indefinitely until it self destructed. Shakkai is the name that signals things have reached where they need to get to and there is no need for more. Be it the oceans, the sun, or the planet. The further growth of any of these by even a fraction of millimeter would distort the equilibrium in the Bria and ruin it.

Similarly Hashem told Moshe, that while indeed things got worse in Mitzrayim after his audience with Paroh nevertheless the suffering needed to reach its boiling point before it ended, and it is was all part of the master plan to hasten the redemption.

We can’t fathom the workings of Hashem, says Rav Pam. Nevertheless out Emuna must be strong enough to know that everything we experience on a personal and national level is measured out exactly, and it is all for the good.
