Lets keep German cars out of this. There are enough good Italian, English and Japanese cars to drool over. lol!

Im proud of you, way to go. The Emes is, if one is determined enough, he can go Heter shopping and keep ever Kuladik shitah in everything. However such a person is likely on a slippery slope to a non mitzvah observant lifestyle.
Talking about a story with a Yarmulka, I hear a really good one. There was a bright Jewish guy who passed his bar and was interviewing at various prestigious Law Firms for a job. Well he has an internal struggle if he should wear his Yarmulka or not and decides that its better not to wear it and he will have a better chance at landing a top job at a top firm.
Long story short he gets interviewed by a very big prestigious firm and the interviewer likes him. He is ready to give him a job, however the policy of the firm was that all new hires had to meet with one of the senior partners. Well the new recruit excitedly enters the office of the senior partner and he sees a nice Orthodox Jew sitting in the chair. The senior partner says “you are a bright fellow and on merit you would deserve the job, but someone who is not strong in his beliefs and is willing to bend the rules doesnt have integrity and is not cut out for this company, we need real men here.”
2 lessons one can learn:
1. These days any Jew can go far wearing a Yarmulka and even having a beard.
2. Bending the rules and seeking Heterim will not pay off in the long run.
Additionally,

Can there be an option after a thread is started in a wrong category for the person who made the thread, or others to move it to a more correct category?

Thanks for that tip. I just created a few ICE contacts. I can’t believe I didn’t have any because I had made them in the past. I guess when you get a new phone and transfer contacts things happen…

Thanks for looking into it, however they seem like young teens and they are acting like children. All I ask is that you moderate their behavior so this place doesn’t become a kindergarten.
WIYMemberHaifagirl
Many of these kids are trained vocally and take some form of lessons. One some occassions you hear some straining but it can’t be any worse than what many kids do when they sing at home on Shabbos. Maybe save the whales is a better project to take up…

Thanks for the tip.

I hear your Hava Amina. You are right on some counts. For example the Doctors and baby specialists say its best to speak to a baby in proper English otherwise you teach them to talk like a baby and not to speak cleawly (clearly…)
As for black people. They talk that way because that’s how their people and community talk. Those who are part of a wealthier more upper class background don’t talk like a street thug.
The Spanish are immigrants, the ones who want to learn English will pick it up by watching Tv and movies that’s how they learn for the most part. However when speaking to them its easiest to refrain from using words like refrain.
You get the point.
WIYMemberSacrilege
Lol. Good because it would be kind of weird switching places 😉
WIYMemberKapusta
That’s a case of someone who was diagnosed and will die whether they quit or not. Such a person has no motivation to quit. However if someone is not sick yet and if they quit now they will be fine, then anyone who has a life outside of their cigarettes would instantly quit.
WIYMemberReal-brisker
Please avoid derogatory racist terms like EDITED. However sometimes Chassidim don’t know English, or not that well so I am forced to bust out some broken Yiddish. When I speak to Spanish or other non natives I try to use simple words that they are likely to know and do a lot of “hand” talking.
WIYMemberSacrilege
Are you having an identity crisis and confusing yourself with me? 😉
WIYMemberCharlie
“I think RSRH is correct. And remember that we honor those who die al kiddush HaShem. I have even heard shiurim by rabbonim saying that that is the highest thing to which a Jew can aspire.”
You are likely referring to rabbi Akiva and the Asara Heirugei Malchus where Rabbi Akiva was smiling while reciting Shema as the Romans brutally combed his flesh off his body, so his students asked him how could he smile? So he told his students “I waited my whole life to be Mekayem To love Hashem with all my heart and with all my soul (nafshecha) now that I get that opportunity I shouldnt smile?”
But in essence we dont want to die. We dont ask Hashem please send non Jews to kill us so we can die Al Kiddush Hashem. The greatest accomplishment a Jew can achieve is living like a Jew keeping the Torah and growing in Torah and Mitzvah observance. Living with mesiras nefesh and not allowing himself to get lost in the Tayvos and materialism of America. We dont “want” to die. We want to live and do Mitzvos!!!

Give a gift card/certificate to a Judaica store. Let him pick the seforim, or music cds he wants. When I was Bar Mitzvad I got seforim and as Popa said many were old prints or seforim I have no real use for. Additionally I got a few doubles and it was just plain annoying.

Please shut this thread down and if necessary deal with Dovv and Backinaction and abbazaba who are likely the same person. We dont need this here.

I agree and your point was mentioned. The concept is that the person doing Chessed has an obligation to do their mitzvah of Chessed 100% the person receiving the Chessed has their obligation to do their Mitzvah of Hakaras Hatov 100% each person has their own Mitzvah that they need to do here. Again for clarity, the person doing the Chessed has an obligation between them and Hashem to do the Chessed properly and its not their business if teh one they do the Chessed to says thank you and one shouldnt even expect a thank you. The one receiving the Chessed has to focus on doing his/her Mitzvah between him/herself and Hashem of showing Hakaras Hatov to another. Every Mitzvah, even bein adam Lchaveiro is only a mitzvah because Hashem commanded it. When doing a mitzvah our obligation is to try and do it 100% how Hashem wants it done. If the person doing the chessed is busy thinking about if the person will say thank you and if the person receiving teh chessed is busy thinking if the person who did the chessed is only in it for their thank you and pat on the back NOBODY did their mitzvah properly. Your mitzvah when doing Chessed is done the second you finish doing the Chessed, dont even hang around to “wait” for a thank you. If it comes, its nice and appreciated, but dont expect it and dont think you deserve it. Hashem commanded you to do Chessed and you do it because its His command. It has nothing to do with the persons appreciation. Think this through it should be much clearer now.

I dont know…September 11 had Muslims all over the world (especially local communities in NYC) celebrating they were quite happy with the death and destruction…and martyrdom and whatever else.
Yes you are right theres more to their religion. Cutting off hands for stealing. Treating women worse than excrement. Beating their wives mercilessly for the most insignificant “crimes”…Ill find you some more of their holy mitzvos shortly…bli neder.

Lets backtrack ok?
I was explaining the vort. However I agree with you 100% a taker will suck the life out of you and its not Chessed to feed their sickness.
I was referring to stam Chessed like Rivka to Eliezer, 2 strangers which is actually probably also part of what makes this the ultimate Chessed as she never thought she would see him again and she had no clue who he was so she couldnt have any selfish intentions.

“I firmly believe the system is abused and lends itself to abuse.”
Then hate the game not the players… thats what I do :D”
I try not to hate anyone unless they deserve it, like if someone is a piece of trash and he abuses his wife and kids, heck yeah Id hate him!
If a guy is self centered and is only in learning so he can marry a rich girl and get the big bucks, I dont hate him, I pity him because he is a pathetic human being and will not be a great husband (until his wife beats some sense into him lol).

WIYMemberrb and any other parents who have kids in school
If you want to do something really nice and thoughtful, buy a card… and write a nice personal message to the Rebbi thanking him for all that he has done and will continue to do for your child and his classmates. I cant tell you precisely what to write but it should be from the heart and sincere. I guarantee you that if you do this it will be appreciated and will pay off nice dividends in the attention the Rebbi/Morah/teacher will give to your child’s development and progress.

What about the mishnah in avos about pas bamelech and mayim bimsureh tishteh?
What about Adam Ki Yomus Beohel “You have to be maymis atzmo” for Torah?
What about Rabbi Yehuda Hanassi who was the wealthiest Jew of his generation who on his death bed lifted his hands as testimony to Shomayim that “In my entire life with these hands I have not taken anything for myself, only for You Hashem?”
Almost all of the great people of previous generations had little or no money. Todays Gedolim as well. Ever vist Rav Shteinman or Rav Chaim Kanievski?
I am not saying a Kollel couple should live in a hut and have no car. But Bederech Klal greatness in Torah is usually found by those who shun materialism.
WIYMemberchesedname
I dont remember the exact source I will have to find it later. However Rashi in Yisro says
You shall not steal: The text refers to kidnapping. [The verse] [verse] refers only to stealing money and the one written further (in Lev.) refers to kidnapping? You must admit that [the meaning of] a statement is derived from its context. Just as [the former two commandments] [and] [i.e., a sin punishable by death] [from Sanh. 86a]

What most people call a tuna beigel is what I described give or take a few differences, but basically a Chassidish “bum.”
Your friends may call you Tuna to tease you, or you may be around more yeshivish guys and therefore to them its funny to call you a tuna. But as a general definition, a guy like youis not a tunabeigel!
November 22, 2010 9:22 pm at 9:22 pm in reply to: Lets ditch the labels there are only 2 TYPES of Jews! #711393WIYMemberWolfishMusings
Bottom line, dumping labels is wishful thinking. Its not going to happen.
WIYMemberSacrilege
I dont “assume” anything about anyone. I was in Yeshivah, I know what goes on there I know what goes on in Kollel. As a guy, I can tell you the reality. A girl has a much harder time knowing what goes on unless she has a bunch of brothers or cousins who tell it to her the way it is.
I respect people in Kollel but I firmly believe the system is abused and lends itself to abuse. Kollel is a luxury for many today not a sacrifice. Kollel should be a sacrifice. If the kollel families are living on the same standards as the non kollel families, something is wrong.
“You cannot hold an institution accountable for the individual and vice versa.”
Yes you can! Hello, a Yeshivah is supposed to mold its Bachurim and if it fails to do that then it can be held responsible. It obviously depends how many boys fail to be molded. But if one sees that a significant # of guys from x yeshivah are not “mentchen” thats a sign the yeshivah has failed to integrate the messages of mussar into the boys Torah learning in a meaningful way.

“You have no idea about the science of addiction.”
Thanks….Listen I know a little bit about it and you obviously didnt get what I was saying. Many pathways and chemicals in the brain that are affected by nicotine addiction are affected in similar ways by other addictive drugs.
However I think the crucial difference is how much of a “hit” or high you get out of a cigarette versus cocaine or some other drug. I dont know the exact match up, but a cigarette is probably a small fraction of the pleasure of a cocaine hit. Which is why for drugs one needs intense rehab and for smoking “most” people can quit cold turkey.
Im sorry if you are having a problem quitting, but Im sure if it meant enough to you, you would quit, like oif your Dr. told you if you dont quit today you will die tomorrow 100% you would see how easy it would be for you to quit cold turkey!
WIYMemberchesedname
The Aseres Hadibros are mentioned 2x in the Torah Parshas Yisro and Parshas Veeschanan. In Yisro it refers to kidnapping in Veeschanan it refers to theft. Look at Rashi.

Regardless of the obligation of the poor person to sell his objects, there’s a much bigger obligation on everyone in Klal Yisroel to not allow a fellow Jew to get to the point where he is in poverty. One should discretely find ways to support those who are in trouble. Help them get jobs…donate towards their salary (if they really aren’t that qualified, so you arrange with the employer to pay towards his salary…) if you own a grocery store, extend him credit or say “there’s a special” on this stuff and give it to him at cost…
WIYMemberMichaelB
Obviously they didn’t realize how out of hand it has gotten. Someone who is a true ben torah could never steal. Its one of the Aseres Hadibros (parshas veeschanan)
WIYMemberSacrilege
It hurts me because I went through it and as much as I enjoyed smoking, it robbed me of many things and took a toll on my health. It effects most people who smoke.
Ill give you some examples.
1. You become unproductive because you always run out for a smoke
2. You feel like a nervous wreck
3. You become very selfish not realizing how non smokers can’t stand the smell and smoke next to and some times in a dira where the non smokers are really annoyed because they hate the smell…
4. All your stuff stinks
5. Your self control and self esteem go down
………….
Baruch Hashem I got out of it, that doesn’t mean I should be happy or not care that someone is hurting themselves because “maybe” they will get out of it. If you care it hurts.
