    Antiochus Kills Channah’s Seven Sons

Antiochus had established his cruel decrees of religious persecution, and prepared to leave Yerushalayim to return to his throne. He appointed his official, Phillip, as the governor of Judea, and ordered him to harshly enforce his decrees. Phillip promptly arrested Elazer Hakohen, an elderly chacham, and ordered him to eat pig meat which was offered as a sacrifice to Antiochus. The governor was eager to have his orders obeyed by Elazer to set an example to the rest of the Jews. He even told Elazer that he would secretly exchange the pig for kosher meat, and he would only have to appear as if he was eating pig meat. Elazer Hakohen refused and was put to death.

The seventh and youngest brother, who was only seven years old, was then brought. Antiochus was determined to win over at least this child. Antiochus begged him to obey his orders, and promised him to appoint him as his viceroy, who will rule over his entire kingdom. He promised him wealth and possessions. The boy contemptuously rejected his offer. Antiochus offered to throw down his ring and the boy will bend down to pick it up, at least giving the appearance of obeying the king. The boy refused.

Chanah then stood over the bodies of her sons, and davened. As she finished davening, she threw herself off the roof and fell to her death.

Finally we can agree on something again lol! Many girls try to lie to themselves or just don’t get reality. We were created this way for a reason. There’s also a reason why the female body was created to be attractive and that females are more beautiful than males. Men are wired to be visual beings. We see things and size it up instantly. Women work differently and looks are much less important. I guess you can say women have more depth perception (binah) and look past the surface to see what’s really there. Women focus on how this person makes me feel as opposed to oh they look nice. That’s not to say men can’t and don’t have that capacity, its just that it isn’t our primary nature and requires a little work for us to try and see past the facade and get into the emotional realm.

We don’t say it as “proof” we say it because human nature is to be selfish unappreciative and to be egotistical. I spoke to a certain Rebbeh yesterday he told me that to develop real Bitachon takes a lifetime of work and one has to learn the Chovos Halevavos daily. Its so easy to take things for granted. We must make an effort to see Hashem in our everyday lives. Its easy to see Hashem when bad things happen. All bad things are blamed on G-d its the good things that we all take credit for or say “coincidence” “luck” or they happened by “chance” therefore we tell Hashgacha Pratis stories to be mechazeik our Emunah and Betachon and to try and really open our eyes to see that everything good comes from Hashem and that everything is good because everything comes from Hashem.

Do you have an ipod or other mp3 playing device? The shiurim are all downloadable as mp3s or videos (although mp3 takes up a lot less space and downloads way faster, but its only audio) You can download an mp3 with a fast internet connection in a matter of a few minutes and put it on your mp3 player to listen to during your commutes. Just an idea…

Probably, Hashem did command Adama Harishon “Leavdah Uleshamrah” to do work and to guard the world so this may fall under that category. However, as much as we do as individuals its nothing in comparison to what the government can do if they really cared. Dont think they care its all one big bluff. If they cared we would be using alternative, or solar energy and other similar things that would significantly lower the effects on the environment. If you recycle you are a good citizen but have really not accomplished much in the grand scheme of things.

If you know dikduk so well you would realize that Baruch Ata doesnt mean I bless you or we bless you. It means “You are Baruch” translation: The source of all blessing.

Even in the English translation, all the translators say Blessed are You Hashem, if you google the definition of blessed you would see that the English definition of blessed is also not going to fit with a translation that means “I or we bless You, Hashem.”

However there is a concept that we can give power to Hashem so to speak, because by acknowledging His Existence and Greatness and how He is the Source of everything and that everything was created and exists because of His Divine Will……………………………………………………………………………………………………………we give Hashem power so to speak to give us more Blessing. In other words, the greater our recognition and appreciation of Hashem, the closer He comes to us which directly brings about a greater outpouring of Blessings from Hashem, by coming close to Him we enable Him so to speak, to bless us more.

Using simple logic and a little understanding of the fact that Hashem is perfect in all ways and is the source of all blessing and man is useless and worthless and would cease to exist instantly with the rest of creation without the constant injection of life force that Hashem provides the world (Hamechadesh Betuvoi Bchol Yom Tamid Maasei Bereishis) (Vekonei Hakol-which means that He creates everything constantly every second of the day and that if for a nanosecond He took away His infusion of life force it would all disappear) the thought that we can bless Hashem is beyond comical, its actually insane.

I’m with BPT. What the world considers Macho is truly the opposite of what real macho is. The worlds definition of macho if you get to the core of it is an egotistical self absorbed arrogant immoral person that is focused only on himself and doesn’t care about anyone let alone realizing that there’s a G-d, he thinks he is G-d.

The worlds macho men are wimps who are controlled by the swirling winds of their Teivos and can’t resist even small temptations. That’s not Macho that’s a slave!

I have decided to revive this thread…

    Chanuka Money

    Question:

Why do we give ‘gelt’ (money gifts to children) on Chanukah?

    AskTheRabbi.org answered:

The original custom to give “Chanuka gelt” is actually rooted in the Talmud. The Talmud states that even a very poor person must light Chanuka lights, even if he can’t afford it. A person with no money is required to go “knocking on doors” until he collects enough to buy at

least one candle for each night of Chanuka. The Torah concept of charity, tzeddaka, requires us to help the recipient in the most dignified manner possible. Therefore, the custom arose to give gifts of money during Chanuka so that someone who needs extra money for Chanuka candles can receive it in the form of “Chanuka gelt.”

There is another idea that the origin of chanukah gelt dates back to the triumphant coinage of silver minted by the Maccabees. The Maccabees were so overjoyed at their victory that they minted their own coins and gave them out on Chanukah.

Since Talmudic times the custom to give money has blossomed to become one to give presents as well. My family custom is to give presents to the younger children and Chanukah Gelt to the older ones. It seems to work very well! Of course, nowadays there is a custom to give out chocolate money to the younger children – chocolate money is a means of giving younger children a gift that they can savor immediately and yet it retained the spirit of Chanukah “gelt”.

I wouldnt go out on a date with a girl who would entertain the Hava Amina of having a TV in the house. We are not in the same place Hashkafically or in level of observance. Thats enough about her and I. You dont know me and you dont know Sacrilege so please dont try playing Shadchan on the internet with 2 people who you dont know.

This is Macho? This is pathetic. Its pure Gaiva and stupidity, not only are they destroying their immune system (and self worth) by smoking, but they even go out without being properly bundled up which is just asking to catch a cold. Its Kenegged a Gemara Mefureshes which says that Tzinim and Pachim (basically colds and fevers…) are Biydei Adam, that a person can prevent them by taking the proper actions like wearinga coat….

The smoking has to stop. Boys dont realize that they are Oiver on a Deoraysoh of Venishmartem MEOD es Nafshoseichem!

It is possible to listen to Megillah for many years and still not know it by heart too well. There are people who dont have great memories remember the first time you hear it its after fasting all day and the second time is in the morning when the person could be hungover or just really tired from the night before. He definitely hasnt done anything wrong by not knowing the precise name of Esthers father/Mordechais uncle…not everyone is as smart as you of course. When you are smarter though, the price to pay is that more is expected of you as well…

If Im a king then you better be careful, have some respect for royalty 🙂

Bottom line is if you pick 10 singles at random and analyze them their family…you would probably come out with a different reason why they are still single. Some singles are picky or small minded. Some parents are picky or small minded. Sometimes the person has a personality issue, attitude, way they speak…which can make them unappealing to the opposite gender. Sometimes the issue is the family that people want to avoid. There are families with bad reputations, maybe the individual has a “past.” Maybe the references aren’t presenting you properly…There’s so many reasons why someone can be single.

First of all smart doesnt help your chances in getting married. If anything most guys are not looking for particularly smart girls. Besides most girls are average. Thats common sense no it wouldnt be called average otherwise. That being said, there are many smart girls that are still single. If anything, I think the smart girls have a harder time especially in Yeshivish dating where the guy is often uneducated and clueless about many things while she is way above and beyond him in most areas.

The girls that tend to go fast are the ones with easy going non intimidating natures, good conversationalists, good looks, money, good family…

A small percentage of guys are actually looking for a smart girl (count me in) because they feel that their masculinity or self esteem will not be challenged in any way by a smart or more accomplished wife.

“2) not to dull to begin with; both factors that also increase the chance of being married.”

Wow, so according to you the reason single girls are getting older and not finding shidduchim is because they are dull? I cant believe you can make such a blanket statement. If the girls blast you, its because you deserve it!

The only way to stay moral is to watch your “boundaries” with the opposite gender and keep a strong Kesher to Torah. Always be moving up or forwards else you will be moving down or backwards.

The inyan of Shivah is to mourn and feel the pain, but that doesnt mean one may question Hashems ways. We say in Ashrei 3x every day Tzaddik Hashem Bchol Drachav Vechasid Bchol Maasav.

Its foolish to think we can understand “why.” Emunah means not questioning Hashems ways when things go bad, its easy to have Emunah when things are going great, its when things are difficult that Emunah kicks in and gives one the strength to go on knowing that Hashem will sort things out.

in reply to: Why Is There Tragedy In Israel? #715093
    WIY

We really dont know why any tragedy happens maybe some big Tzaddikim can be privy to such info, however unfortunately there are enough things going on that it can be anything. Eretz Yisroel is the Land of Hashem the land of Kedusha, the Land that Hashem is always looking at, any sins committed there are treated much more strictly than sins committed elsewhere as its like sinning in the Kings Palace. Theres so many unaffiliated Jews in Israel as well as a number of affiliated Jews not behaving correctly. Additionally all Jews are connected and Chas Veshalom the sins of Jews in one place of the world can cause tragedy in another place. Halevai we would be on the level that we do so few Aveiros that we could pinpoint what caused a tragedy!

When ever these things happen Hashem is trying to wake us up. However how many of us truly wake up? Even if we say a few Kappitlach Tehillim, is that it?! Is that all?! Are we now ok and able to go on with our lives pretending we care and we did our part? If we are not living how we should what good is our 2 Kapitlach Tehillim?! Hashem wants us to come close to Him, not to say 2 Kapitlach and go on with status quo and living mediocre lives.

Even if we cant do a total Teshuvah, at least start the process. Start doing something different. Work on Emunah and Bitachon. Start Davening to Hashem, pour your heart out, not just paying “lip service” plead with Hashem that He should help Klal Yisroel and that He should help you be a better Jew and serve Him properly. I really feel like Tefillah is an area that we are seriously lacking in.
