volvieMember
Limud Torah.
volvieMemberA woman’s place is at home.
volvieMemberAnd volvie gets what?
Volvie gets the one who is a baalas midos, baalas tznius, AND stringently follows halacha.
volvieMemberJust-a-guy: I was going on your original example above, in which you already answered that. You said his Rosh Yeshiva paskened that it was assur.
volvieMemberAnd I’m grateful you are neither my daughter nor relative. I’ll take the girl who follows halacha.
volvieMember“Even if it did NOT help”
Feel-goodism may make you feel good, but it damaged the Jews suffering in the Soviet gulogs, when their Communist jailers let out additional venom on our brethren there in response to protests on their behalf.
volvieMemberIn Just-a-guy’s original example, the guy who “politely states that according to his Rosh Yeshiva, it wouldn’t be proper” is the one I would want as a son or son-in-law.
volvieMemberoomis – No one is appeasing. When you have the Avi Weiss’ of the world chaining themselves to the Soviet U.N. Mission, he is antagonizing the Soviets. A world power will not respond to foreign antagonist seeking to publicly berate them. There is a reason diplomacy is called “diplomacy.” An authortarian regime, like the Soviets, are not responsive to uprisings or protesters. See the events in 1956 Communist Hungary for an example of how they respond to it.
What those anti-Soviet rallies DID do, was antogonize the Soviets into further mistreating Jewish refusenik’s, such as Natan Sharansky, in the Siberian gulog.
volvieMemberThe rallies against the Soviet Union were counterproductive and harmed the cause for their freedom by antagonizing the USSR with anti-Soviet protesters chaining themselves in front of their U.N mission – rather than encouraging it to change their policies. It was the behind the scenes work by askonim working with U.S. policy makers, who didn’t need to stick their faces in front of cameras, that accomplished much for Soviet Jewry.
volvieMemberI have no personal quarrel whatsoever with anyone who wants to live without necessary chumros. What I do object to strenuously, is when those same people treat me with contempt for trying my best to live a halachic life. If Hashem Yisborach wants us to do certain things, we have Emunas Chachomim they will properly direct us. Do we really believe we are wiser than Daas Torah?
volvieMemberWhether it is indoors or outdoors is certainly one of the deciding factors.
volvieMemberYanky, outdoors isn’t necessarily okay all the time (per the quoted sources above.) What I never said was that they can “never” go outside, which is how you put it.
volvieMemberIt depends on how you define “good causes.” Using your earlier example, I certainly wouldn’t include the Israel Day Parade in that category. OTOH, if you are talking about a Tehilim Rally, where you have masses of Klal Yisroel coming out and davening for an important cause, I’m all for it.
volvieMemberIs it celebrated with Pizza pie? (Chukas Hagoyim?)
volvieMemberYanky, I have no idea why you would attribute that to me. Nothing I said would so indicate.
Perhaps you were thinking of the Rambam in Hilchos Ishus (13:11) or Shulchan Aruch (73:1). Although they say she shouldn’t go outside too much, they do not say never.
volvieMemberAnother fallacy of the libertarian position is that they support euthanasia. The Libertarian Party could use Jack Kevorkian (“Dr. Death”) as their flagbearer.
Additionally, they have no use for moral laws. A true libertarian will support public lewdness.
EDITED
volvieMemberA siyum is indoors and seated, thus incomparable to a rally where one parades themselves around.
volvieMemberNo wonder the CR has been so slow lately…
volvieMemberNothing is untzniusdig, UNLESS it is conducted in an untzniusdig way.
Some things are inherently untzniusdik.
volvieMemberMod99 – Makes sense, and thanks for the explanation. Since you already allow editing within 5 minutes, even if the post was approved earlier than the end of the edit time, the concerns you stated above would apply in that timeframe.
I suppose you could “test” how things work out by increasing it slightly, to say 15 or 30 minutes, and see if it is abused. If so, you can revert; if not its great. Just a suggestion.
BTW, during the several weeks posts were going up immediately unmoderated, I believe there was only one abuser. The benefit of that system was that conversations were much easier. Obviously even with only one abuser you still need to rectify the situation, but with proper vigilance perhaps you could be a bit lenient and see if the situation allows such leniency to continue.
Good Shabbos
volvieMemberNo. And generally these political rallies accomplish little or nothing.
volvieMemberAnything for you! 🙂
Good Shabbos
volvieMemberThank You.
Good Shabbos
volvieMemberNevertheless, allowing it in a medical setting can be done without legalizing it across the board. Medicine must be prescribed by a physician whilst the general public cannot buy prescription medicine without a medical prescription. I can understand and perhaps support an effort to legalize narcotics for medical purposes (i.e. with a prescription) without legalizing it across the board.
Do supporters of narcotic legalization efforts also support that prescription medicine be made available to anyone for any reason with or without a prescription? To be consistent, they would need to support that position.
volvieMemberAZ – Don’t sweat it, I didn’t think into it deeply. 🙂 Good Shabbos.
volvieMemberMod80 – I was suggesting to perhaps increase the time allowed to edit. Especially since you can now edit it before it goes live.
volvieMemberA Kiddush Hashem amongst Yidden is immensely bigger than in front of goyim. Indeed, a Kiddush Hashem amongst Yidden is the real Kiddush Hashem.
volvieMemberI nominate rdreyfuss for 40, and ishman for 41 (half his wish.)
volvieMemberMaybe allow a greater edit time now that you can edit it before anyone else sees it?
It seems you have only a couple minutes after posting it, to still edit it.
volvieMemberCocaine is used medicinally.
And what virtues do you see in crack and heroine to legalize it?
volvieMemberHaving the same issue here with the CR being excruciatingly slow in loading every page. Been like this for several days. Even the main YW site seems to load OK, so it seems to be affecting the CR.
volvieMemberI’m glad to see some old faces back around here…
volvieMemberNaaaaa…
volvieMemberAnd I’m glad to have facilitated that achievement.
Don’t worry the.nurse; I’ll get you an even better present.
volvieMemberMochel loch. 🙂
volvieMemberthe.nurse – great sacrifice!
volvieMemberharos, What are ACAdemy awards and how do you win?
volvieMemberYou’re definitely not the only crazy one
Not the only crazy one?
volvieMemberIn a nutshell you are arguing that narcotics — i.e. crack and cocaine — would result in no negative consequence to society if legalized and made freely available to all?
volvieMemberIt is far safer to drive with seat belts.
The libertarian approach would be to legalize marijuana, crack and cocaine too for all people – adult and minors.
volvieMemberGuy’s insensitivities? And I always question girls over-sensitivities.
Anyways, in a few minutes AZ should be here and explain its all due to the age gap.
volvieMemberand a law made a group of men who THINK they know what’s best for us.
haifagirl – The nations of the world are commanded as one of their 7 laws (Noachide) to establish laws.
And often we do know the reason the Torah prohibits activities. i.e. Dangerous activities being assur in many cases due to its danger. There is every reason for the law of the land to outlaw dangerous activities.
The Torah isn’t libertarian.
volvieMembermybat: Exactly.
volvieMemberI’ll take double-dips.
volvieMemberhaifagirl – The Torah outlaws certain activities (dangerous or otherwise.) There is no reason the law of the land should be any less.
volvieMemberhaifagirl – Are you opposed (or how do you otherwise explain)…
the seatbelt laws?
underage drinking (not driving) laws?
etc.?
volvieMemberQuiet time is normal and to be expected (and cherished.)
volvieMemberTalking about jax, kapusta, mepal, a600kilobear, etc… what gives?
volvieMemberThe Oral Torah was given at Har Sinai simutaneously with the Written Torah.
volvieMemberericop – The best approach is following the “Noachide” laws. You don’t have to become Jewish, and you can follow G-d’s wishes — as explained by Judaism — by following the 7 Noachide laws. And you do not have all the many restrictions that Jews have. Following this, you are fully rewarded in heaven.
