we never had a name for that decade, like we did for the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s. The 0’s, the naughts, etc. nothing ever caught on.

after jan 1st, 2000, when it was confirmed that there was no apocalypse, the whole Y2K scare thing, evaporated like smoke, after months and months of unnecessary anxiety and apprehension.

I heard rumbling getting louder and louder, followed by an explosive noise as my house shook for 5 loooong seconds.

At first i thought it was a plane that went down and crashed, but then i heard rumbling AFTERWARDS getting quieter and quieter so i knew that that must be after-effects and it was an earthquake. i never felt an earthquake as much as i did last night. it was extremely freaky. my wife was shaking like a leaf, she was so scared.

Kind Kalman – let me assume that you “happen to be” a citizen of the NY/ NJ area… am I right?

are you serious?? is this a joke? how can you seriously propose ALL jews to move to one area? it’s preposterous to suggest 1000’s of jews move to YOUR area. by doing THAT, you are just creating OTHER crisis’. so, by fixing one thing you are basically destroying another thing.

sorry, i just don’t buy it.

if you are NOT a NY’er nor from NJ, I will assume youre not in that stage of life to have an entire family to pick up and move,

    because that is kinda hard…

    WIY – lol

it is interesting to note that when Neil Armstrong died in August, it was in a month that had 2 full moons (a rare occurance known as “a blue moon”), the first Aug.2 and then again on Aug. 31

    pretty cool huh?

there were lots of ‘proofs’ by conspiracy theorists that there never was a moon landing, but those were all ‘shlogged’ up. people will come up with all sorts of conspiracy theories for almost anything these days

“Very simple answer — from whence do you know that 3 million people stood at Har Sinai? The answer, of course, is the Torah. You cannot use the Torah as proof of the Torah’s claims.

My dear friend. you totally missed my point. It’s NOT JUST FROM THE TORAH that I know this. That’s my point. You can never make something up like that! Never! If you claim 3,000,000 people witnessed something you better make sure they did before people start asking you for a witness. So 3300 years ago when it was first stated that there was a ma’amid har sinai, there must have been SOMETHING, or this ridiculous claim would have been ignored and eventually disappear into oblivion, and judaism would have NEVER gotten off the ground. (think of what the first pesach seder would have been like if it was a fallacy.)

if we all have potential, and an innate animalistic nature to be murderers, theives, etc. just the opportunity doesn’t present itself, yet if it WOULD you would transgress, does that mean you are a rasha? i mean this seriously. if someone would ask you “would you ever steal?” of course you answer “chal v’sholom”. But if nobody is around and you are alone starving and a food is in front of you with no apparent owner, and you make the decision to eat it with 1 million excuses, are you a rasha?

WolfishMusings- “I have none. Every “proof” that’s been presented to me for Torah MinHashamayim has not stood up to intellectual scrutiny.”

how can you say that? what then do you call proof? a picture from a camera? A video? is that the only “proof” for you? why can’t you use logic, and your brain to assess a situation such as Ma’amid Har Sinai which was given in front of 3,000,000 people, to be iron-clad proof enough for you??? It boggles my mind! Here you have 3 million witnesses to G-d’s revelation and they all pass this down to their children. Does this not stand up high enough for “intellectual scrutiny”??? 3 million witnesses…..

what WOULD be “proof” according to you? what would YOU say that would be undisputable evidence? I can not provide proof to you, if you do not DEFINE what YOU consider to be proof.

so i am driving in this 4-lane highway, coffee between my knees, cell phone in my left hand, right hand is busy switching cds from the stereo, elbows on the steering wheel keeping the car nice and steady, when all of a sudden this woman driver in the lane next to me, who is applying her early morning make-up with the help of her car mirror, quickly pulls into my lane, without her blinkers on!! my car gives a sudden jerk as i applied my brake at lightening speed, avoiding what could have easily been a catastrophic 9-car collision (at least), i drop my iphone mid sentence, coffee falls from my lap and spills all over my pants and shoes, (did I mention it was piping hot??!)my cd falls down and gets all scratched up wedged somewhere inside my open tool box, and I am now having second thoughts again about using a car seat belt!!!

    Grrrrrrr…..crazy women drivers!!!

a guy gets up by a sheva brochos, reaches into his inside jacket pocket and retreives a whole packet of papers, maybe 10-20 sheets. audible gasps are heard throughout the crowded hall, everyone anticipating yet another loooong drasha that will drag on well into the night. Before he begins reading his speech however he begins tapping his pockets, the jacket pockets pants pockets, this side , that side. after a pause, he hesitantly closes in on the mike and says. it seems i have forgotten my reading glasses. the reaction from the guests are immediate and spontaneous, as he receives loud round of applause and a standing ovasion.

the very fact that the torah testifies that it was given in the presence of 3,000,000 people by the RBS”O Himself.

no other religion in the history of mankind testifies that their founding moment began in the presence of more than one man.

this, for me, is the most rational, logical and undisputable proof.

so, the top part of a turtle shell is called the carapace and sits on its back, while the underside of the shell is called the plastron. shells serve as protection from other animals and also are used to help camouflage the turtle. different turtles have different patterns on their shell in order to help them blend into their habitat….wait, what did you say?

    SHAVUOS

On shavuos we have the minhag to decorate our homes and shuls with greenery, and flowers. The Chasam sofer once saw a reform jew who shunned all religious rituals and prayers, but one thing the CS noticed is that this jew at least put up flowers in his house on Shavuos. The following year when the CS happened to pass by his house, the reform jew stepped out, and the CS noticed no flowers in his home this year. They got into a conversation, and one thing lead to another, until the subject of Shavuos and flowers came up. The reform jew started making choizik of the minhagei yisrael, and really put down mitzvas and jewish minhagim in a shameful mouthful. The CS was obviously outraged and mocked him saying, “y’know you are so right! You are so right not to put up flowers in your home!”

The reform jew was taken aback, shocked that the great rabbi somewhat agrees(?) with his ways…

“until now”, said the CS, “you kept SOME of the laws, such as the minhag of putting up flowers in your home on Shavuos and the ??? is that a ???? ????? is ???? ???????. But now I see you are a ???? ???, and therefore it is fitting for you not to even keep this minhag because a ???? ??? is ???? ???????!

    tzaddiq
    Member

its a good question baalhaboozer, i heard once from a rebbi a few answers.

    1) in the minhagei maharil it is written thatwe rejoice for the students who were spared

    2) in th Biur haGr”a, the vilna goan brings a mekor from the torah that we must rejoice when suffering ends. Hashem had decreed that those over 20 yrs who left mitzrayim would die in the midbar. 40 yrs later, when the decree of death had ended, they marked the 15th of Av (Tu B’Av) as a Yom Tov.

3)the pri chadash says the celebration of lag b’omer is because that is the day r’ akiva gave smicha to his new 5 talmidim: r’ meir, r’ yosi, r’ yehuda, r’ shimon bar yochai and r’ elazar ben shamoa. it was these 5 students who disseminated torah after the tragic death of the other 24,000 students.

    peace.

it is symbolic to the fact that a keshes (rainbow) did not appear throughout the lifetime of Rashb”i, because of the great source of zechusim he had for his entire generation.
