Just FTR, Bishul Yisrael and Pas Yisrael are not in the same boat.

One is a requirement (which of course has parameters) and one is a chumra that was until recently not accepted by the vast majority of Jews.

If a fire place is public property then you couldn’t put a sukkah there without permission anyway.

Just to add a sociological reason why mixed seating is not as prevalent anymore is the chassidishization of American Jewry. After the war, many of the rabbanim had Chassidic or Hungarian influences and that stuck.

    From the Internets:

    a) In R. Yosef’s article/teshuva on this subject published in Shonoh

Beshonoh (tashmag, a Heichal Shelomoh pub) he cites a string of fellow

bas mitzvoh posikim approvers, including the Ben Eash Chai (Re’ay 17),

    R. Mosfia (above), Yascil Avdi (Orach Chayim, 28), and the Siriday Aish

(siman 93), and Nitivei Am (siman 225).

    b) He cites R. Moshe Feinstein’s negative opinion to specifically

disagree with it. In particular, he cannot understand why R. Moshe would

distinguish between the celebratory requirements of the boy and girl

based on the different levels of “hecair” or public recognition that is

associated with the entering into obligation (e.g. the boy’s public

participation in minyan, etc.) He asks how could R. Moshe make such a

differentiation without any established basis, when the clear

celebratory requirement is chal with the entering into the obligation,

equal for boy and girl, and not dependent on later form of

performance. He also cites the harmful effects of appearing to

“discriminate” and the Siriday Aish’s similar perspective.

I donated blood a few times and almost fainted once. I almost fainted in middle of plasma/platelets. One thing to consider is to eat very well a few days before, and not just pasta, you need meat or other sources of iron. Also, if you are prone to not feeling well, ask them right away to raise your legs.

corn and peanuts are interesting cases.

Peanuts should not be kitniyos and people remember eating them in the olden days and even having KLP peanut butter in the US into the 80’s.

Corn is our maize, maize is the staple crop. In Europe, maize was wheat, and maize was a no-no.

Due to the word confusion, corn is kitniyos, but like many things, it really shouldn’t.

Also, just to nitpick, grains are kosher for Pesach. You just can’t make them chametz.

A bas mitzvah is the same as a bar mitzvah, except one is for a boy and one is for a girl.

A bar mitzvah is NOT a seudas mitzvah and in Europe a piece of cake and a cup of shnapps was all a kid could count on.

    A few things.

Firstly, most chaverims don’t have single men.

Secondly, fixing a stuck steering wheel takes approximately 6 seconds.

Changing a flat takes a lot longer.

Contrary to MM and others, there is nothing weird with making small talk when you’re with someone for 20 minutes or more. (You do it on a date.)

    MM,

    1) An engagement with tenaim is not the same as an engagement with just an engagement party.

    2) A person who marries just because they couldn’t break the engagement, is most likely not allowed to be beyechidus with his new wife.

If you’re getting a gun for home safety reasons, then a handgun is not the way to go. A shotgun is much better. A handgun is more for sport or for target practice, you have to be a pretty good aim in order to be effective with a handgun.

Also, divorce is a big taboo, so they don’t divorce. You can’t compare the two.

The non-Jewish world doesn’t have a big taboo for divorce, so that is why it’s much higher. You are all kidding yourself if you think we’re any better just because the divorce rate is lower. The divorce rate is lower because divorce is taboo and it “ruins” shidduchim.

Actually, the halacha is that someone who comes to your door and says they need food, you must give them food, no investigations. If someone comes collecting for money, then you can investigate. You do not have to give everyone who comes to your door.

I once gave some guy collecting some change I had in my pocket because that is all I had, a few seconds after I closed the door, the guy dumped it back in my mailbox, so my suspicions that he was a fraud were true. (and yes, MANY of these people are frauds.)

squeak, the Germans never hid their intentions. They encouraged Jews to emigrate.

In addition, if nobody expected the Holocaust, why was “physical death better than spiritual death” even bandied about? Also, why were people escaping if they had the chance? Why were people seeking visas?

You don’t want to judge? That’s fine, but it works both ways.

And in hindsight, we clearly see that those who said to stay were mistaken.

    MM,

    1. EVERYONE knew there was going to be a war. People were doing anything they could to escape. Furthermore, the letter was most likely written in 1940, which was after the war.

    2. This letter was a letter. It doesn’t have anything to do with the FACT that visas were offered to him and his yeshivah.

You can revise history all you want if it makes you happy, it just doesn’t change the facts.

1- I’m not sure if that’s true or not, but it’s certainly irrelevant.

2- The letter is a separate issue. The letter just told his talmidim not to go to the US.

It has nothing to do with the fact that R’ Elchonon turned down visas for him and his talmidim.

I received your [literally “his”; the letter is written in the respectful third person] letters but I have no ability to do anything with this, thus I did not respond.

The yeshivos in America which are able to bring over students are the yeshivas of Dr. Revel (named Yeshiva University) in New York and Beis Midrash L’Torah in Chicago and they both are places of danger in terms of spirituality because they conduct themselves in a spirit of freedom, and what benefit is there to flee from a physical danger to a spiritual danger,

    No backticks please
