If he went to Brisk in Washington Heights, that’d be fine, you probably wouldn’t have to shell out too much for monthly maintenance.

First, What type of stupid question is who’s fault is divorce?

In most cases, two people came to a conclusion that they can’t live together, and ZE HU. Why is there a need in society to assign blame?

Secondly, my advice for couples who are thinking about divorce is to go to a therapist, not a rav. Speak to most divorced couples and they will most likely tell you that speaking to a rav just made it worse.

Actually, out of all those on the list, Zoos are indeed mentioned in the SA as being assur. However, zoos today are not like the zoos of yesteryear and it might be muttar. In Nosson Slifkin’s (non-banned) book about animals he has a whole chapter discussing the different poskim on today’s zoos and if they are muttar or not.

Keep in mind that even in no-fault cases someone HAS to be the plaintiff. So even if both parties agree, someone has to file for divorce.

My reply was in response to the claim that once a person wears jeans, that person is no longer fit to be a rav. Presumably, that person believes that wearing jeans is one of those aveiros that you can’t do teshuva for.

Well, there are certain aveiros you can never do teshuva for.

Clarinet. It’s a bit easier, lighter and cheaper.

Plus, once you do learn the clarinet, it is easier to pick up the sax, since they are both woodwinds.

I am in favor of it. We see the damage caused when the masses suddenly have an idea and decide to get an Amendment written.

I’d rather have corrupt local politicians than corrupt national politicians.

    Midwesterner,

You’re equating NS and his followers to a maskil, which you can’t really do. ESPECIALLY since the sources NS quotes were 100% acceptable to EVERYONE, until some askanim with a grudge (and yes, that is the back story) decided that those opinions are no longer valid.

How is Slifkin unreliable? He brings sources for all his statements.

All his statements are quoting rishonim, geonim, acharonim, etc. If someone in 2011 wants to tell me that every single “gadol” for the past 2,000 years was wrong, that’s their option, but I don’t necessarily need to listen to them.

    midwestener,

the reason why many people have banned his books is because most of them can’t answer questions like R’ Kaplan could. So instead of answering or listening to others, they just ban. I can’t seem to understand how what he writes borders on heresy since 99% of what he writes is just stating the opinions of others.

Alternate side parking is also illegal. The point is that I don’t think Hatzolah condones it. People just abuse any “power” they receive.

    True story,

The coordinator of Flatbush Hatzolah, A”H was once driving when he saw a Hatzolah car driving with lights and sirens to cross a red light. He knew that there was no call at this time, and HE pulled the van over. I believe it was the kid or wife of the member and suffice it to say it never happened again.

    MDG,

Godiva isn’t the best, they are just really expensive which makes it seem the best. They are good though, especially their ice cream truffles. The best chocolates are usually European or high end stuff that you find in Whole Foods. In Europe, in order to be called chocolate, it has to meet certain standards.

It’s the same as R’ Moshe. The question can be asked, “Can you blindly follow a psak of R’ Moshe?” It all depends on what was accepted or not. Consider that R’ Moshe clearly stated that peanuts are not kitniyos and consider the fact that people DID eat peanuts and peanut butter on Pesach only until “recently.”

I would say it depends on the psak. Not all of his psakim were taken on by the rest of the people.

That is actually incorrect. The gender is determined at fertilization.

The female egg comes in one variety, X. The male fuel comes in X or Y, and whichever one gets there first decides if there will be a kiddush or a bris.

I sold some gold recently and had a nice chat with the dealer. One of the reasons why gold is going up is the fear factor. People are willing to pay money to have some tangible asset in their hand in case the world goes crazy. That is why when you do sell gold, you get more for sovereigns than plain gold jewelry.

I would not buy gold in this economy right now, I would sell though.

the person who wrote the article about a link between vaccination and autism is no longer a doctor, his credentials were revoked.

Since you can’t post links, do a Google search for:

“paul offit wired” and read the Wired article. Paul Offit developed a vaccine and is an expert in the field. He stated (and this was used against him as a sound bite) that the body can handle 10,000 vaccines at once.

In 99.99% of cases, vaccines will do no harm.

BTW, the Tifferes Yisrael called Jenner one of the Chassidei Umos Ha’olam for his smallpox inoculation. People who don’t vaccinate are not only ruining it for their kids, but they are ruining it for other children as well due to the herd.

    Robotic Judaism is not Orthoprax.

What I do sometimes, is in middle of Shemona Esrei, during Shma Koleinu, I’ll just “talk” in English and request my requests and proclaim my apologies, etc.

What I sometimes do is just talk to Hashem. I know it sounds corny, but before you go to bed, just “daven” to Hashem.

(I am reminded of a famous Yerushalmi (I think) where a person stated if not for the bowing of Modim, he would never know where he’s up to in davening. In other words, this is not a new problem.)

BTW, 17-18 tefachim is not 66 inches either.

Also, the R’ Soleveitchik who held 33 inches or so, was R’ Aharon (at least that is what the Charedi rav told me). I am not stating what his brother held.

The OU had an article on gum but I couldn’t find it. The bottom line was that many of the ways to make gum involve actual non-kosher ingredients. It’s not just not-certified but it’s actual treif. After all, how many popular brands of non-Jewish gums are kosher certified?

(I think Bazooka is becoming kosher in the US.)

I once asked why they don’t and didn’t get a good answer, at least for NY. In NJ I think it’s a bit trickier because they would have to be part of the 911 system and that would raise lots of problems.

I believe some Hatzolahs do bill insurance, when available. In NY they don’t. Billing insurance would certainly cut back on the taxi calls.

I once got a call from a teenager who wanted us to start his parent’s car. His parents went away and took the car keys to keep him from driving.

I told the guy that it was a good try, and it’s good he’s being honest, but no luck on his request.

Slighlt OT, but “they” did studies to determine which method of choosing a line is better: fewer people or fewer items.

It turns out that you should pick a line with fewer people, even if the people have lots of groceries. The reason given was that the scanning didn’t take too long, it was the actual process of starting and stopping the transaction that adds up.
