Except that even R’ Elyashiv stated that the sources Slifkin used were allowed to say it but (in the year 2000 the world magically changed, and) we can no longer say those same things.
February 3, 2014 5:00 am at 5:00 am in reply to: Continuation of Discussion on R' Slifkin and Weiss from Manchester Eiruv Thread #1001993truthsharerMemberBecause Chazal never said to do MBP, they said to do metzitza.
Also, just for the record, R’ Soleveitchik, IIRC did in fact say as such.
February 2, 2014 5:42 pm at 5:42 pm in reply to: Continuation of Discussion on R' Slifkin and Weiss from Manchester Eiruv Thread #1001960truthsharerMemberWhy is there such a need to prove that Chazal knew EVERYTHING? I don’t get that. Does it bother you if Chazal didn’t really know much about science? I’m sure your rav, rosh yeshiva, etc. don’t know much about science, yet their still your rav, rosh yeshiva, etc. and if they have a shailah about science, they will seek and learn.
But to jump through hoops to make it that our guys are the best and knew everything just seems childish.
And I’m not sure why my prior post was censored, so I’ll ask again (and I have heard this taught in yeshivah) did Chazal know a cure for cancer? Yes or no.
truthsharerMemberOomis, his own children did not follow the tzava.
truthsharerMemberIt’s also good for just getting the sources for you to lookup. If I were not 100% confident after using online resources, then you ask your LOR.
truthsharerMemberNot at all, it was showing how the tzava is not halacha and indeed it was ignored even by R’ Yehuda’s own children.
Regardless, I rewrote that into my second post which I don’t think was posted either.
January 31, 2014 7:53 pm at 7:53 pm in reply to: Continuation of Discussion on R' Slifkin and Weiss from Manchester Eiruv Thread #1001949truthsharerMemberWhy did you not approve my post?
It violated our guidelines.
truthsharerMemberRegarding the first post, I believe it’s wording lacks derech eretz to a Rav – 29
truthsharerMemberIt’s in the second sefer, sixth parsha. It’s obvious that we are to practice Judaism 24/7 only during the sixth of the second month. The mishna is not sure of the month, is it Iyar or Cheshvan. That is why we are machmir and do it by both, and that is why we do BaHab during those months.
truthsharerMemberIt’s not an issue, AT ALL.
January 21, 2014 6:03 am at 6:03 am in reply to: Continuation of Discussion on R' Slifkin and Weiss from Manchester Eiruv Thread #1001865truthsharerMemberSo now we go from MIT to Cambridge? Before you know it, he studied mathematics under Isaac Newton.
January 21, 2014 5:16 am at 5:16 am in reply to: Continuation of Discussion on R' Slifkin and Weiss from Manchester Eiruv Thread #1001858truthsharerMemberBen Levi,
I am presuming then that you have no idea what goes on in a university. For someone to have a PhD in mathematics means that he studied mathematics at a PhD level and most likely got his masters in a math field as well. I doubt he did any science in college, especially not more than the average college educated person. If you’re not majoring in a science field, and especially if you’re going on for your masters or PhD, you’re not going to bog your schedule down with unrelated courses.
January 21, 2014 4:42 am at 4:42 am in reply to: Continuation of Discussion on R' Slifkin and Weiss from Manchester Eiruv Thread #1001852truthsharerMemberR’ Meiselmann’s PHD is in mathematics, so I’m not sure what expertise he has over Slifkin with regards to science.
truthsharerMemberI don’t know why you’re bringing in Slifkin.
As far as most sane thinking halachic Jews, if it’s Slifkin vs. Anybody, Slifkin wins.
truthsharerMemberYou edited out some of my post.
truthsharerMemberI never looked at working boys as second class. They are first class. They are the ones following the mesorah of thousands of years. They are the ones making a kiddush Hashem on a daily basis, while working in a non-Jewish atmosphere.
I have found that working guys are much stronger in their Judaism than the kollel guy. I don’t know if it’s universal or just my own experience.
edited in order to undelete -29
truthsharerMemberChief Rabbinate. same thing.
truthsharerMemberIt’s not about Avi Weiss. It’s about the CR thinking they are the world leaders of Jewry. Avi Weiss was not the only North American rabbi disqualified under CR rules. All American rabbonim should be up in arms over the CR actions.
truthsharerMemberRight, we should have just said, “NY Post? Feh. Frum Jews don’t read that garbage.”
But the problem with making a big issue of it can be seen as if we don’t care about the actions (or alleged actions). Remember when Satmar had a huge fundraiser for a child molester? Actions like that talk.
In this case, once people start going all crazy, some people will ask, “but is it true?” And if so, why does the community not care?
As far as the name calling, you can see it here all the time, when YWN puts Lapid’s picture upside down, or Lipman is called a Rasha or YM”S. YWN moderates all posts. Why would they allow that through? If we as a society don’t care when people we disagree with are called Rasha, or Yimach Shmo, why should the NYPost care?
truthsharerMemberSL, What gets me is that by the time this thing passes, he will have become the gadol hador of America.
Is it a tragedy? Of course.
But people seem to be more upset at the Post than at the murder, and the actions that caused the murder.
Anytime something like this happens we should reflect inwards and see what could be taken from it.
Just attacking and frothing at the mouth doesn’t do your cause justice, and it could actually do it harm.
truthsharerMemberIt would also help if you actually were attacking the right person. Hellena Winston is a medical student in UofC.
truthsharerMemberDY, do you think his father and grandfather held of the kollel lifestyle?
Times change. To not take time/modern day into account is wrong.
As to the OP, as others pointed out, what will happen when you go to a more RW school and see all the hypocrisy and aveiros going on? You left MO, and then you’ll leave RW? It seems to me that you don’t want to live with any sort of being uncomfortable, but guess what, life is sometimes uncomfortable. This is a good lesson for life. Make the most of it. When you get a career, you’ll have plenty of moments where something will be trying to tug you one way, and the way you act now will help you defeat the tug later on in life.
truthsharerMemberMaybe Hashem was telling the Charedim in J-lem to appreciate and be makir tov to the Israelis. See what happens for four days of no infrastructure, little police activity, MDA delays, no electricity, etc.
truthsharerMemberHow does this help? All this is doing is giving false hope, which may be a good thing but it’s still won’t accomplish anything. The treatment is a bad treatment. The doctor is famous for preying on people who have nothing else going for them. I don’t know how that is indicative of my sorry state. DY, this is not the only remaining hope left for the child. Send the kid to Disney or to Israel or to wherever he wants or something, and say tehillim but we shouldn’t be sending our most vulnerable to quack doctors who are serious frauds. It would be one thing if it was a placebo but worst case scenario the treatment is an extremely painful treatment and causes an extremely painful death.
truthsharerMemberAll this proves is that frum people are sheeple.
November 21, 2013 10:36 pm at 10:36 pm in reply to: Withholding a get vs. Withholding children #988318truthsharerMemberThere is no justification to withhold a get. And the claim that the ex-wife is withholding the child is not the same. The court can enforce visitation. Give the get and then sue for visitation.
truthsharerMemberDidn’t they do this a few years ago?
Abcd, using your logic you should also go to a church and pray. What can it hurt?
truthsharerMemberCan you spot the avodah zorah in this paragraph:
(I wonder if it was a Freudian slip.)
truthsharerMemberThere’s no problem doing it but I had mine done at a sofer to check the ksav first, and then just verified the knot was good on the right side.
October 2, 2013 6:09 pm at 6:09 pm in reply to: Mental disorder misdiagnosis affecting friends, shidduchim and status. #976975truthsharerMember1) Why was the teacher in the room?
2) This is why many people do not seek treatment, or don’t go to frum therapists.
3) Also, the new DSM actually gets rid of Asperger’s and places it back within the Autism spectrum.
truthsharerMemberI think your last part of your post is not true.
truthsharerMember1) It might even be assur, depending on what they’re building.
2) It might lower property values.
3) It might be dangerous. Building illegal additions usually means not using licensed work which means it is most likely not up to code.
September 17, 2013 9:32 pm at 9:32 pm in reply to: At what point are you officially one side or the other? #983448truthsharerMemberOf course you can find Mir bachurim in bars. Go to the Marriott or the River thingy by the Brooklyn Bridge (which is worse because it’s also a restaurant).
truthsharerMemberPBA, as always, you are correct. I defer to your superior intellect and knowledge.
truthsharerMemberRe-read your post.
truthsharerMembermdd, how can you speak for women and say there were no nisyonos to cover their hair?
September 17, 2013 8:53 pm at 8:53 pm in reply to: Video being taken in Shul on Rosh HaShana #975504truthsharerMemberThere is no halachic ksiva on a digital screen. It might be assur al pi minhag, but certainly not min haTorah.
September 17, 2013 8:33 pm at 8:33 pm in reply to: At what point are you officially one side or the other? #983445truthsharerMemberHaKatan, why do you allow people to ask their LOR about a sukkah on SA but not on Zionism? Why do we have to follow the SR on Zionism, but not for sukkah on SA?
September 17, 2013 8:17 pm at 8:17 pm in reply to: Tension based on spouse's change in tznius #975478truthsharerMembermdd,
If the wife suddenly starts wearing denim is that really a reason to divorce, even if it’s “less” frum than you are/were?
I also imagine that many of the people saying to get divorced for any violation is not/has not been married.
truthsharerMemberIf I vote I would be faced with felony charges.
September 17, 2013 8:13 pm at 8:13 pm in reply to: Video being taken in Shul on Rosh HaShana #975501truthsharerMemberHow is it ksiva? Maybe on a real videotape, but a digital?
truthsharerMemberstreekgeek,
Please tell me you did that on purpose.
September 17, 2013 8:04 pm at 8:04 pm in reply to: At what point are you officially one side or the other? #983444truthsharerMemberMy LOR gave a shiur on Zionism, and the first thing he said was that it’s not black and white. It’s not evil apikorsus and it’s not the only mitzvah to perform, and like many things in Judaism, it’s a middle ground.
You, who are a zealot can’t see that. You need extremes in your life so for you it’s black and white.
September 17, 2013 8:03 pm at 8:03 pm in reply to: At what point are you officially one side or the other? #983443truthsharerMemberHaKatan, what do you think a lounge is if not a fancy bar/pub?
truthsharerMemberPBA, there is. See (DeBruine, 2002)
Here’s a snippet:
truthsharerMemberPBA, it depends what type of cousin they are. There is a biological instinct to not desire your cousin since it might result in birth defects.
September 17, 2013 5:16 pm at 5:16 pm in reply to: Tension based on spouse's change in tznius #975474truthsharerMemberOne other thing, is it really good to get a divorce and all that entails just for someone moving up, or down, the ladder WHILE still being frum, just not as frum as you want?
September 17, 2013 5:12 pm at 5:12 pm in reply to: At what point are you officially one side or the other? #983434truthsharerMemberSam2, what is ironic is that when it suits him he uses “it’s a machlokes” (Sukkah on SA), but when it’s against the MO he can’t see that other’s take different opinions and “it’s a machlokes.”
I think that is the biggest thing. The Charedim can’t see that there are other viewpoints out there.
truthsharerMemberIf you don’t want to, then don’t.
If you want to, then do.
September 17, 2013 5:04 pm at 5:04 pm in reply to: At what point are you officially one side or the other? #983432truthsharerMemberBTW, you keep on bringing the SR, R’ Elchonon and the Brisker Rav in your great crusade against Zionism. One thing to remember is that they are not the be all in Judaism, especially in Charedi Judaism. They are a minority shittah. And that’s the beauty of Judaism. We each follow our own Rabbis. If you feel that you would serve Hashem best by following them, then do so, but you can’t say others can’t follow their own rabbis. (Especially since according to the GRA, following the SR is kefirah. See how easy it is to play the “my way or the highway” game?)
