Torah613TorahParticipant
Very interesting, OneOfMany.
I enjoy reading Shakespeare. That’s my contribution to this thread.
January 23, 2013 2:08 pm at 2:08 pm in reply to: Must a boy who is in Shidduchim always be shaven? #924166Torah613TorahParticipantI can only speak for myself, but it certainly doesn’t bother me.
Torah613TorahParticipant1) I don’t live in Israel, but would have voted Gimmel
2) Don’t like their strategy. Would have voted anyway since my Rav and my family’s Rav tell us to.
3) They need to be more inclusive of BTs and more tolerant.

Torah613TorahParticipantYiddishmeidl, I really shouldn’t have to spell out in which way women are distracting to men. Just take my word for it that we are. Or ask a man.
Yes, and there are many 13 year old boys out there who are taller than many women.
Torah613TorahParticipantWomen have less body mass, plus are distracting to men in combat. Unless it’s an all-woman unit fighting against an all-women unit, seems like a waste of time incorporating women into an army to me.
January 23, 2013 1:40 am at 1:40 am in reply to: Israeli Elections 2013 – Let's Talk Politics #928028Torah613TorahParticipantZahavasdad: Yeah, it’s a pity. I wish Otzma had gotten in.
January 23, 2013 12:16 am at 12:16 am in reply to: Israeli Elections 2013 – Let's Talk Politics #928025Torah613TorahParticipantAchoside: Well, part was from The Forward. I knew the phrase “narrow, right-wing coalition” resonated from somewhere. I’m not disturbed that it happened – just cite your sources!
I agree with you that overall, it was a good result for the chareidim.
January 23, 2013 12:12 am at 12:12 am in reply to: Israeli Elections 2013 – Let's Talk Politics #928022Torah613TorahParticipantZahavasdad: the latest polls show Likud up to 33. So
Likud 33
Bayit Yehudi 12
Shas/UTJ 18
Is already a pretty safe coalition of 63 seats.
Sushee, I’m wondering about that too. Amsallem got 1% and Rav Amnon Yitzchak got less than that.
Torah613TorahParticipantTalmud, that’s interesting. Wouldn’t it seem logical to state that they were lost, but cannot find them?
Isn’t that what happened with the Zohar?
Torah613TorahParticipantDY: Please don’t call me 613. It makes me feel like a number*.
(just kidding!)
January 22, 2013 11:17 pm at 11:17 pm in reply to: Israeli Elections 2013 – Let's Talk Politics #928013Torah613TorahParticipantSushee: I was hoping for Bayit Yehudi to get 15, Otzma 2, Shas 13 and UTJ 8. So as to force Netanyahu into a right wing, Chareidi coalition.
January 22, 2013 11:05 pm at 11:05 pm in reply to: Israeli Elections 2013 – Let's Talk Politics #928011Torah613TorahParticipantAchosid copied and pasted his predictions from Reuters.
OK, my predictions:
Likud-Beiteinu 31
Bayit Yehudi – 12
Shas +UTJ 18
Which already gives him a majority.
In addition, he may go with:
Yesh Atid – 19
Labor – 17
Hatnua – 10
I think he’s going to go for the center-left coalition. If he does, he can afford to drop Bayit Yehudi, which will make Obama happy.
Torah613TorahParticipanttalmud, thanks. And what’s wrong with saying that a Gemara was lost?
Torah613TorahParticipantVeltz M had a really good idea. However, it would be kind of awkward for most people – I’d have to learn to respond to another name. But I really like the idea of maybe picking an English name that was easier for others to pronounce and using it professionally.
January 22, 2013 10:03 pm at 10:03 pm in reply to: Israeli Elections 2013 – Let's Talk Politics #928009Torah613TorahParticipantI’m really disappointed in the results.
Torah613TorahParticipantDY, lots of people like to argue “Don’t judge me by my clothes, but what’s inside.” Is that what you’re saying here, that the outfit doesn’t reflect your inner views necessarily?
If that’s the case, would you go around with a sweatshirt that said “I hate Chareidim”?
Torah613TorahParticipantVacation.
Torah613TorahParticipantThe question is, am I a pot or a lid?
Torah613TorahParticipantDaasYochid: Not sure I get your point
Torah613TorahParticipantI second PBA – what was the issue?
Torah613TorahParticipantYes, you can definitely go on too many dates if you’re referring to first dates. It can drain you and make it hard to develop connection.
I try to space dates, when possible.
Torah613TorahParticipantPBA is right. It is considered normal to be called by your first name at work. I would personally prefer to be called Ms. Lastname, but I don’t want to stand out.
Instead, I usually insist on being called by my full first name by anyone who isn’t a family member.
Torah613TorahParticipantDY: I don’t think Maris Ayin would apply for a WCS shirt. Because you are against Tzaar baalei chaim, and everyone knows you don’t give money to save sharks because you care about the sharks. It’s completely different davka paying for these sweatshirts. Tzahal doesn’t give them out for free.
Torah613TorahParticipantI know it’s expensive, but unlike Hogwarts, there’s no fund for scholarships for people who can’t afford tuition or books. Also, there’s no dormitories.
Torah613TorahParticipantI liked the Ein Yaakov on Sanhedrin. It was really interesting to read about eschatological times.
Torah613TorahParticipantPirkei Avos (since boys commented on my mouse/insect thread)
January 22, 2013 12:11 am at 12:11 am in reply to: Israeli Elections 2013 – Let's Talk Politics #927966Torah613TorahParticipantI think Amsallem does have a chance of getting in.
Sushee, many people feel that UTJ does not represent that “average” chareidi.
As akuperma and truthsharer pointed out, this is the first election where the religious are starting to become a real political force, instead of just a kingmaker when the balance of power between left and right becomes to delicate.
I disagree with truthsharer that Shas will lose seats. I think Deri is likable enough to make up for a lot of faults in Shas.
January 21, 2013 11:45 pm at 11:45 pm in reply to: Racism and Chinuch: What do we teach our children about diversity? #929156Torah613TorahParticipantI agree with yytz, but want to add that we should be proud of serving Hashem. That has nothing to do with race.
Torah613TorahParticipantDon’t invite everyone. They don’t need to know anything about your personal life.
January 21, 2013 10:54 pm at 10:54 pm in reply to: Yated insert regarding 1000 shofar ritual #921967Torah613TorahParticipantNot a word about how working on our Middos may help us find a shidduch in the entire article… it gives 5 things to blame not being married on.
January 21, 2013 10:38 pm at 10:38 pm in reply to: Racism and Chinuch: What do we teach our children about diversity? #929151Torah613TorahParticipantI agree with you that racism is wrong. I’m sorry you had such an experience in Bais Yaakov.
I’m a product of the system and I always winced at these attitudes (and occasionally voiced my disagreement.)
January 21, 2013 10:29 pm at 10:29 pm in reply to: Israeli Elections 2013 – Let's Talk Politics #927961Torah613TorahParticipantSushee – Correct, I’m interested if the increase in population percentage will offset the issues within UTJ.
Torah613TorahParticipant???? ?? ??? ????? ?? ?? ?’ ???
January 21, 2013 1:58 pm at 1:58 pm in reply to: Israeli Elections 2013 – Let's Talk Politics #927934Torah613TorahParticipantPredictions?
I think that UTJ will go down a seat
Shas will go up a seat
Bayit Yehudi will get 13 seats
The leftist parties will get just enough to scrape together a coalition with Netanyahu.
(I love making negative predictions, so if they come true at least I’m right, if not then I’m happy with the results.)
Torah613TorahParticipantSuperstar: You can hate the sins but love the sinner.
Torah613TorahParticipantThanks to Litvish Kiryas Yoelite, that was the point.
Of course I support individual soldiers! I think all the soldiers in Tzahal are very brave and I’m thankful for their sacrifice of time and exposure to danger to support Jews. That’s a different issue entirely. This thread is about the appropriateness of wearing Tzahal sweatshirts, you can start another thread to talk about sweatshirts in general (as WIY already has) or Tzahal in general.
Thanks for posting HaKatan.
Torah613TorahParticipantFor what it’s worth, I don’t wear sweatshirts. I don’t even own one. On the very rare occasions I would want a sweatshirt, I borrow a sibling’s.
I would rather wear thermals underneath my clothes than extra layers on the outside. But you have to be slim enough to get away with that. I can see why most girls prefer sweatshirts.
Torah613TorahParticipantI think the Chazal is “Lo Yaalu B’Choma”. One of the others is that we won’t throw off the yoke of the nations. And the third is that we won’t force Moshiach to come.
Torah613TorahParticipantDaasYochid, I believe it is. One of our three promises to Hashem is that we won’t take back EY by force.
Torah613TorahParticipantMDG, I don’t think they are any less tzanua than any other sweatshirt.
Torah613TorahParticipantBoro Park Girl and Yiddishe Meidel, this is exactly the kind of attitude that surprises me. By supporting Tzahal, you are supporting the secular state. Not everyone in Tzahal is even Jewish! Why can’t you wear a Magen David t-shirt instead?
Torah613TorahParticipantIt sounds like you didn’t know what you were doing. It was a shogeg. Tell the person you wouldn’t have done it if you knew and how much it upset you. Then relax, Hashem forgives us.
January 21, 2013 3:40 am at 3:40 am in reply to: Rav Chaim Volozhiner: America the last station for Torah before Moshiach #921178Torah613TorahParticipantI think this is a very interesting topic. Why the US and not Australia?
Torah613TorahParticipantIt kind of feels like a political statement to me.
January 20, 2013 5:29 pm at 5:29 pm in reply to: Israeli Elections 2013 – Let's Talk Politics #927932Torah613TorahParticipantI think I meant Habayit Hayehudi rather than Mafdal, which no longer exists.
Torah613TorahParticipantIf I didn’t live in the city, or in a frum neighborhood out of the city, or in an area with houses spaced far apart, I’d insist on having a dog with a very loud bark. Or a gun. Mostly because I don’t look very intimidating and would like to have some sort of self defense.
Torah613TorahParticipantNothing to do with Ami, but I love jury duty! Can’t wait for the next one! I never get picked and get a day off work… what could be better!
January 20, 2013 5:21 pm at 5:21 pm in reply to: Israeli Elections 2013 – Let's Talk Politics #927931Torah613TorahParticipantUTJ if loyalty to my Rabbonim was my strongest motivation to vote. But if the Rabbonim seem split on whom to vote for, probably Shas or Mafdal. Mafdal is at least religious and not likely to agree to dismantling settlements. I’m not Sephardic, (or “edut Mizrach” 🙂 ) but Shas seems to be the most powerful option and most likely to improve the socioeconomic issues.
