I really don’t want to argue this. So I will just state that alcohol is a lot more dangerous than pot. Just google it.

And, one can prove how terrible alcohol is. Observe how you post when on it. Or maybe that proves how funny it is.

WIY: Maybe. I think that most students in BY high school are way too stressed out. They can enjoy their high school years. You’re anyway going to be taking your high school classes again as per-requisites, so you should only study hard for secular studies if you are getting college credit.

VM: Why is marrying for intelligence better than marrying for money? Your kids IQs will regress towards the mean anyway. (OK, not as much if your IQs are both really high, but it’s a lottery either way.) If you’re smart but not good-looking, you should marry someone really beautiful, so that your kids will have some beauty and some intelligence.

I’m surprised you’re davka picking on intelligence, it seems to me that men generally want wives who are less intelligent and more good-looking than themselves.

Chevron: Why is marrying for beauty better than marrying for money? Both come and go, and most men are fine with marrying for beauty, which is even more transient.

PBA: Your wife is eminently reasonable. What did she ask for in exchange?

TPO: Nobody in real life cares about how you did in HS. Really. I can tell you from experience that if you get a near-perfect or perfect score on your SATs, GREs, or whatever standardized test there is, you’re set even if you’re a C student. So do not worry about high school level math tests.

I actually know what you’re talking about! But I don’t know the steps. It’s pretty generic though – step in, step out, the hora, kick your feet every so often, ask someone to do it at the next wedding you go to.

ThePurpleOne: Thanks for your encouragement. You’re right, I’ve been feeling like maybe if I’m just going to fail maybe I should drop it, and you’re right that it will be even worse if I drop out and have to retake it.

I loved the regents math. You don’t really need class, just do the practice problems and you’ll be fine. But if you want to go to college later for any math/science type field, make sure you know your trigonometry really well.

I would have liked your seminary just fine. I’m sure the curriculum includes important halachic shaylos for every day life, like, can you give a lamb as a korban if it was born from a pig?

If it works for him, who are we to judge?

Some people marry for Torah, some marry for money, some marry for beauty, some marry for intelligence, some marry for companionship, some marry for security. This guy was looking for money, so if he married this girl, he would get what he wanted. They should build a BNB.

Thank you, Popa Bar Abba, for making halacha so enjoyable and interesting.

If you had been my halacha teacher in high school, or seminary for that matter, I would have developed a much better appreciation of the subject.

I feel jealous of how much everyone else seems to know about halacha! But at least I can appreciate a little bit of how much goes into every decision from these topics.

CC613: I’m a girl and therefore cannot evaluate a person’s learning that way. I do sense how “comfortable” the person is quoting Tanach, so if it’s a big deal that they know a random Chazal, they are probably not that educated. But I cannot tell anything about their halachic expertise.

I need to know the following: Is it permissible to call someone who is not a Rabbi, “Rabbi”?

Is there an actual issur, that you are NOT ALLOWED to call someone without smicha, Rabbi?

I have always erred on the side of respect and call everyone, Rabbi, Dr, etc. Let them correct me. But is there a halachic issue in calling someone Rabbi, for darchei shalom?

in reply to: Help With ADHD Child – Anyone Have Any Info To Help? #929717
    Torah613Torah

The most important thing is, does this kid get enough sleep at night? That can masquerade as ADD.

I am not a professional, but I have worked with teens with ADD, and this sounds very much like ADD. He probably has shown signs of it before, but it was subtle and easy to miss, especially in boys where ADHD is more common. I know girls and girls tend to have ADD.

    2) Concerta has been incredibly helpful in 4 of the 5 people I know who have taken it. One person I know suffered from tics, which Concerta worsens, and had to stop it. The nice thing about Concerta is that you can take it in the AM and don’t need to carry it with you, and it has a smaller “drop” at the end of the day than let’s say Adderall. (I know one person on Adderall, they like it a lot but they also abuse it, saving it for studying, so can’t give you feedback on that.)

    2) The alternatives do not work on people with real ADD (not sleep or nutrient deficient.)

Another option is therapy. This may sound strange, but one or two girls I know actually improved without medication. They learned to face their limitations and work with the tools they had.

Yet another option is natural stimulants, like caffeine. A doctor once told me he treats his ADHD with coffee, it’s enough to help him focus. I would not recommend this for a child as it may stunt growth. (the scientific literature on coffee stunting growth goes both ways, but anecdotally, every child I know who drinks coffee regularly, or coffee yogurt, is very short for their age.)

It’s not the end of the world, half the secular Jews I meet tell me they have ADD/ADHD. So I figure there’s a similar percentage in our community. 🙂

    Good luck!

Facetious: Well, when you pride yourself on something, however unimportant, and then make a mistake, it is a good opportunity to test yourself. Apologizing humbly is fun; it makes other people feel good and doesn’t bother me.

golfer: Your name is golfer with a lowercase “g”. The question in my head was whether it refers to The Torah as a proper noun, or torah as in teachings. The 613 makes it pretty clear on which it is so you’re right.

The question to me was, would my posts be as interesting if I had a boring username? And torah613613torah looks as boring and typical as anyone could wish for. I want to be boring and typical, except when I want to be interesting and special. So let me ramble on a bit longer and maybe it will get changed some day.
