TPO no it’s a party that I work at! I like to work! So why not have a work party?
February 22, 2013 4:48 pm at 4:48 pm in reply to: Things that are ok to say in Hebrew but not in English #996153Torah613TorahParticipantOblate: Interesting.
WIY: Good point. I was really tired if I couldn’t think of that. 🙂
YW-42: That was a great explanation! Thank you so much.
Torah613TorahParticipantPBA, what about 2-9?
Torah613TorahParticipantTPO: fingering is putting the right finger on the right key. Most early books put numbers on top of each note to tell you which finger should go on that key. Often, it seems easier to just use one finger, since it takes longer to learn with the proper fingers. But in the long run, you will have to completely re-learn your habits in order to play harder, and ultimately more rewarding, pieces of music.
February 22, 2013 4:41 pm at 4:41 pm in reply to: What You Can Eat in a Non-Kosher Dairy Kitchen #932254Torah613TorahParticipantI am not talking about a non-religious relative. With relatives, you can ask them to buy you things for when you’re there. 🙂
If you must know, it’s a Jewish but secular person or group of people, who has some respect for frum Jews (so they won’t be deliberately causing me problems) but not so much education. I checked and they only drink kosher wine. It is more analogous to a dairy restaurant kitchen, with a little less options.
Benignuman: bishul akum is just not a problem here. Afaik it’s only ever been used by Jews. Do I have to somehow prove that this is the case?
farrock: I keep both CY and Yoshon. I’m a little more lax on CY if I have to be, but very strict on Yoshon.
TPO: Good point about non-shomer Shabbos Jew touching non-mevushal wine. Not that I plan on drinking wine there, but if they use it in recipes…
YW 42: Do they have fins and scales?
Toi: Chalav stam milk.
nisht: Thanks! These are the kind of issues I need to ask questions about.
Benign: I think they know that shellfish are not kosher, and they could use another kitchen if they wanted to eat that. But gvinas akum is another issue… thanks!
DY that was interesting
PBA: I’m not a boy and don’t want to live on wine and meat. At least not on a daily basis.
yungerman: Thanks.
Torah613TorahParticipantEnjoy your boredom. Or you can come do some of my work yay!
Torah613TorahParticipantWIY and HaLeivi: Thanks! Haleivi, is there a source for that, or just a particularly creative mood?
Tzaddiq – I learned that this passuk ends with ?’s to remind us that in the future, knowledge of Hashem will cover the 4 corners of the earth. But I always wondered, why the gematriya of 40 for 4?
And here we have 4 mitzvos that begin with ? which equals 40.
Torah613TorahParticipantI’m sure Emunas Yisrael will be open for women, but not sure about Vasikin.
Torah613TorahParticipantMake sure to wipe your feet on the mat before you come in.
February 22, 2013 2:58 am at 2:58 am in reply to: How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? #931779Torah613TorahParticipantWolf: The grind one is new to me! Thank you.
Torah613TorahParticipantNo, she’s slow.
Torah613TorahParticipantMy siblings taught themselves (I took lessons.) They only took lessons after they could play by ear, to improve their playing skills. They are much better at piano than I am, I never graduated year 4. So starting with lessons doesn’t always work out for the best anyway.
Just get yourself an easy book. If you practice an hour a day, and that means every single day, it should take about a year to become good enough to play easy pieces.
Also, fingering is really important. Don’t get into lazy fingering habits in the beginning, or you’ll just have to relearn fingering later on.
Torah613TorahParticipantYour face shows your spiritual level at the time, some people don’t like that.

February 22, 2013 2:46 am at 2:46 am in reply to: What You Can Eat in a Non-Kosher Dairy Kitchen #932241Torah613TorahParticipantRD: Good point about the non-kosher fish! I didn’t think of that.
They only use kosher wine, for various reasons.
Torah613TorahParticipantLOL, that was a good one.
Were Leviim ???? ????

OneOfMany: Me too! I like coffee flavor but coffee itself gives me a headache, so I avoid it. (Some of my siblings are also really sensitive to caffeine – like we can’t eat chocolate if we want to go to sleep!)
Someone told me that there’s a gene that codes for caffeine enjoyment. I guess we got the decaffeinated version.
February 22, 2013 12:25 am at 12:25 am in reply to: How many nicknames can you think of for Snowbunny3318? #931766Torah613TorahParticipantNo offense, Snowbunny, but this thread makes you seem a little self-centered.
You really need to get to sleep.
Torah613TorahParticipantSnowbunny3318: I’m in college, and believe me, did not work this hard in high school. If I worked in high school at all.
Shnitzy: You don’t need to convince me 🙂 See the Generalizations and Statistics topics.
Torah613TorahParticipantYou would be grouchy, if you were Oscar.
If you were not Oscar, you would not be grouchy.
Torah613TorahParticipantShnitzy: I appreciate your concern. BH I struggled in the beginning of this course, and had some panicky days (like the one when I posted this thread) but am now settling in and enjoying it very much. 🙂 Have a freilichen Purim!
February 21, 2013 11:32 pm at 11:32 pm in reply to: How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? #931775Torah613TorahParticipantHow much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood
equals
a woodchuck could chuck what a woodchuck chucks if a woodchuck could chuck wood
==>
How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood
minus
a woodchuck could chuck what a woodchuck chucks if a woodchuck could chuck wood
equals
-woodchuck = 0
|woodchuck| = 0
Feel free to complete the proof, it is due tonight at 8.
OK, this makes no sense. I am drunk on tiredness 🙂
Torah613TorahParticipantElmos world, it’s one thing to set up a shidduch, that’s easy. People can increase the quantity of the shidduchim they set up. But if they are of poor quality, there is no point and the girl ends up wasting a lot of time.
OTOH, if you want to accept the axiom that “10% of everything is quality”, you can argue that by increasing the quantity, the quality also increases as a percentage.
Popa – your cleverness is noted.
Torah613TorahParticipantSo start a campaign to stop drunkenness year round! Instead of sitting around anonymously complaining about it.
Torah613TorahParticipantMod 007 – Popa and Abba just realized there’s a bar in between them, so they’re partying.
Torah613TorahParticipantshnitzy, thanks for your concern.
Torah613TorahParticipantWIY, yeah and when did the waiters get their party?
TPO: The only kind of party I can do for a week is a work party!
I don’t know if they slept over, it’s a good question. 🙂
February 21, 2013 5:31 pm at 5:31 pm in reply to: Facebook Is To Blame For Rising Orthodox Jewish Divorce Rate? #935189Torah613TorahParticipantLet’s make up a study that blames X for Y. Because X is correlated with Y.
Heart attacks are associated with melting pavement, but both are caused by heat.
Torah613TorahParticipantBasically, a BY is a non-Chassidish frum school that considers Sarah Schenirer a role model.
But it can also be a Chassidish school.
And it can also be a modern school that is frummer than the schools around it, as in “BY type”.
And I’m really frustrated, because I had something in mind, but only later realized I can’t post without naming the school. Oh well.
Torah613TorahParticipantIt’s only fitting that this topic be bumped.
Torah613TorahParticipantB”H I did slightly better on the latest quiz. Please Hashem help me continue to improve!
Torah613TorahParticipantWe give to everyone for 2 blocks!
Why not, if you don’t make them too expensive, and it’s a family activity, it’s fun. And you never know, there are some people who might not get Sh”m if you don’t give them.
Torah613TorahParticipantGood job alter bachur!
Torah613TorahParticipantAsk your LOR if you’re allowed to daven it. Then please come back and post his response, I have always wondered about this.
Torah613TorahParticipantI’m sure you can, but it’s not a nice thing to do!
February 20, 2013 7:35 pm at 7:35 pm in reply to: Who Wants to Marry a Tzadeikes Like Esther? #1141361Torah613TorahParticipantLol, he isn’t my type anyway, that’s why I’d davka send that picture.
Saying that you want to marry a beautiful person makes sense. Saying you want to marry Miss America is dumb, a lot of them are not even that pretty if they were dressed tzniusly.
So wanting to marry a Tzadeikes like Esther makes sense, but wanting to marry the most beautiful girl in the kingdom will end up ruining all your plans.
And thanks for linking that thread PBA, it was creepy but a good reminder.
Torah613TorahParticipantPurple: Don’t worry, I haven’t seen it at litvish weddings, and I’ve attended many.
February 20, 2013 12:19 am at 12:19 am in reply to: Turning 13, 20, 30, 40, etc.Shas Ratzon? #961029Torah613TorahParticipantJewishness, that’s interesting, I don’t remember that about 13 or 20.
Every decade is described in Pirkei Avos a different way, ben shloshim l’koach etc. So they do signify a transition.
February 20, 2013 12:16 am at 12:16 am in reply to: Who Wants to Marry a Tzadeikes Like Esther? #1141349Torah613TorahParticipantAchashverosh got a demon to be with him instead of his beautiful 70 year old wife with green skin, do you want that too?
I have heard about a great learning boy lalalala in very yeshivish circles who wants to date Miss America. If it’s ever redt to me, we’re going to send a picture of Miss America (tziusified) and if he says no, 1. that was Miss America 2. if you said no because that was Miss America, how do you know what Miss America looks like? And which year?
Torah613TorahParticipantTPO: Your teacher was talking about boys, right? I was taught that getting drunk is only a man’s mitzva.
Torah613TorahParticipantMs. Purple is correct, TAG is definitely a BY.
Anyway, thanks for all the interesting insights everyone.
Torah613TorahParticipantSaysme, Chevron, exactly! But I have a lot of contacts, and my BY contacts say that BY started frum girl’s schools in America, and pretty much every chassidus insists that they’re the real ones who did. Chabad definitely thinks that. I think BY is more realistic because I’m pretty sure that chronologically BY came before BR.
WIY: Yes, but you don’t know if that’s undergrad or for graduate school, and likely in a field where there is no decent frum college, and I haven’t posted about my background, but I am happy to announce that I am yeshivish, have always been yeshivish, and have a good yeshivish pedigree.
Torah613TorahParticipantWIY, this is why I get more nervous with small dogs than large dogs.
Torah613TorahParticipantPopa, I’m glad you realized you were reading the table wrong. I’ve been feeling a bit attacked in this thread by you and Squeak. I definitely have to work on my middos. It’s okay if anonymous people think I don’t know anything, really it is. I just need to convince myself. 🙂
BTW if you use a z-score calculator, it will give you a much more accurate number. My feeling, without doing calculations, is that your answers are a bit too rounded. 3.16 should be closer to 1000.
I just came home and am too tired to focus, but, if you put your Z 3.1622 into the Fourmilab z-score probability calculator (to the ten thousandth digit), it comes out to 1/1277.
Torah613TorahParticipantSqueak and PBA, that’s because it isn’t the correct Z score. 3.16 is a chance out of a thousand, 10 is 99.999999999999999999999 and probably more than that percent chance.
February 19, 2013 4:05 am at 4:05 am in reply to: Lawsuit against Williamsburg stores dress code #930848Torah613TorahParticipantVM: Don’t be so sure that you’re the most liberal poster here.
DY: I think the dictionary mixed up flaunt with flout. One flouts the rules of modesty when flaunting accomplishments.
Torah613TorahParticipantSaysme: Can you name Orthodox non-BY schools that are not Modern Orthodox?
Torah613TorahParticipantChevron: Correct.
Saysme: Right, so you can see the differences. To someone outside your group, you look just like every other frum girl. (I once worked with someone who was convinced that I was ‘Hassidic’. I just gave up explaining the, to me, rather large difference between Chassidish and Yeshivish.)
Thanks Morahmom!
Torah613TorahParticipantPopa: If you’re doing it for 1000 flips, a really high z score is correct.
Squeak: No one is trying to confuse you. You seem really smart. It would be easy for you to read up on statistics without getting confused.
AriFree: LOL. Just use what works for you, that’s my philosophy.
NFGO: The point of the opening post was to help people with low numeracy enjoy reading about statistics, and realize they use it unconsciously to make generalizations, but it can help them make better decisions. The point was not my knowledge (or lack of) statistics. If you like, we can go deeper into the topic.
I find that people get very intimidated and confused when statistics come into the picture, and a bit of exposure goes a long way in our community. And shidduchim are a lot less intimidating than coin flipping. 🙂
Maybe I simplified too much, but I wanted everyone on this website to enjoy reading it, even people who don’t like numbers.
And we do generalize, from a sample to a larger population, which you yourself acknowledge. But we agree that statistics are much more useful than generalizations.
