TPO: fingering is putting the right finger on the right key. Most early books put numbers on top of each note to tell you which finger should go on that key. Often, it seems easier to just use one finger, since it takes longer to learn with the proper fingers. But in the long run, you will have to completely re-learn your habits in order to play harder, and ultimately more rewarding, pieces of music.

I am not talking about a non-religious relative. With relatives, you can ask them to buy you things for when you’re there. 🙂

If you must know, it’s a Jewish but secular person or group of people, who has some respect for frum Jews (so they won’t be deliberately causing me problems) but not so much education. I checked and they only drink kosher wine. It is more analogous to a dairy restaurant kitchen, with a little less options.

Benignuman: bishul akum is just not a problem here. Afaik it’s only ever been used by Jews. Do I have to somehow prove that this is the case?

farrock: I keep both CY and Yoshon. I’m a little more lax on CY if I have to be, but very strict on Yoshon.

TPO: Good point about non-shomer Shabbos Jew touching non-mevushal wine. Not that I plan on drinking wine there, but if they use it in recipes…

YW 42: Do they have fins and scales?

    Toi: Chalav stam milk.

nisht: Thanks! These are the kind of issues I need to ask questions about.

Benign: I think they know that shellfish are not kosher, and they could use another kitchen if they wanted to eat that. But gvinas akum is another issue… thanks!

    DY that was interesting

PBA: I’m not a boy and don’t want to live on wine and meat. At least not on a daily basis.

    yungerman: Thanks.

My siblings taught themselves (I took lessons.) They only took lessons after they could play by ear, to improve their playing skills. They are much better at piano than I am, I never graduated year 4. So starting with lessons doesn’t always work out for the best anyway.

Just get yourself an easy book. If you practice an hour a day, and that means every single day, it should take about a year to become good enough to play easy pieces.

Also, fingering is really important. Don’t get into lazy fingering habits in the beginning, or you’ll just have to relearn fingering later on.

    minus

a woodchuck could chuck what a woodchuck chucks if a woodchuck could chuck wood

Elmos world, it’s one thing to set up a shidduch, that’s easy. People can increase the quantity of the shidduchim they set up. But if they are of poor quality, there is no point and the girl ends up wasting a lot of time.

OTOH, if you want to accept the axiom that “10% of everything is quality”, you can argue that by increasing the quantity, the quality also increases as a percentage.

Popa – your cleverness is noted.

Basically, a BY is a non-Chassidish frum school that considers Sarah Schenirer a role model.

But it can also be a Chassidish school.

And it can also be a modern school that is frummer than the schools around it, as in “BY type”.

And I’m really frustrated, because I had something in mind, but only later realized I can’t post without naming the school. Oh well.

Saying that you want to marry a beautiful person makes sense. Saying you want to marry Miss America is dumb, a lot of them are not even that pretty if they were dressed tzniusly.

So wanting to marry a Tzadeikes like Esther makes sense, but wanting to marry the most beautiful girl in the kingdom will end up ruining all your plans.

And thanks for linking that thread PBA, it was creepy but a good reminder.

Achashverosh got a demon to be with him instead of his beautiful 70 year old wife with green skin, do you want that too?

I have heard about a great learning boy lalalala in very yeshivish circles who wants to date Miss America. If it’s ever redt to me, we’re going to send a picture of Miss America (tziusified) and if he says no, 1. that was Miss America 2. if you said no because that was Miss America, how do you know what Miss America looks like? And which year?

Saysme, Chevron, exactly! But I have a lot of contacts, and my BY contacts say that BY started frum girl’s schools in America, and pretty much every chassidus insists that they’re the real ones who did. Chabad definitely thinks that. I think BY is more realistic because I’m pretty sure that chronologically BY came before BR.

WIY: Yes, but you don’t know if that’s undergrad or for graduate school, and likely in a field where there is no decent frum college, and I haven’t posted about my background, but I am happy to announce that I am yeshivish, have always been yeshivish, and have a good yeshivish pedigree.

Popa, I’m glad you realized you were reading the table wrong. I’ve been feeling a bit attacked in this thread by you and Squeak. I definitely have to work on my middos. It’s okay if anonymous people think I don’t know anything, really it is. I just need to convince myself. 🙂

BTW if you use a z-score calculator, it will give you a much more accurate number. My feeling, without doing calculations, is that your answers are a bit too rounded. 3.16 should be closer to 1000.

I just came home and am too tired to focus, but, if you put your Z 3.1622 into the Fourmilab z-score probability calculator (to the ten thousandth digit), it comes out to 1/1277.

in reply to: Generalizations vs. Statistics #930901

Squeak and PBA, that’s because it isn’t the correct Z score. 3.16 is a chance out of a thousand, 10 is 99.999999999999999999999 and probably more than that percent chance.

Popa: If you’re doing it for 1000 flips, a really high z score is correct.

Squeak: No one is trying to confuse you. You seem really smart. It would be easy for you to read up on statistics without getting confused.

AriFree: LOL. Just use what works for you, that’s my philosophy.

NFGO: The point of the opening post was to help people with low numeracy enjoy reading about statistics, and realize they use it unconsciously to make generalizations, but it can help them make better decisions. The point was not my knowledge (or lack of) statistics. If you like, we can go deeper into the topic.

I find that people get very intimidated and confused when statistics come into the picture, and a bit of exposure goes a long way in our community. And shidduchim are a lot less intimidating than coin flipping. 🙂

Maybe I simplified too much, but I wanted everyone on this website to enjoy reading it, even people who don’t like numbers.

And we do generalize, from a sample to a larger population, which you yourself acknowledge. But we agree that statistics are much more useful than generalizations.
