Writersoul: “And that’s why I feel, at least a bit, that I can put Torah views in one part of my brain, the dominant part, and also take in things which are not necessarily in sync. Because Art is not the ending point of a great civilization, it is a medium, a symptom. Art is the composition of a story, not only the story itself, and I can be in awe of Terry Pratchett’s style without agreeing with what I see as his agnosticism.”

Why do you say you feel it a bit? What does the rest of you say?

Wow, OneOfMany. Very interesting blog. I think I may have seen it before but didn’t read it closely.

Please let me know if I misunderstand you. It’s been a long time since I had a serious conversation with a non-math person. 🙂

    1. Re the definition of art:

It seems to me you are using Art to describe the creative force of knowledge. To quote –

    – I would sum this up as “the creative force in humankind can be called art”. And I agree.

    2. The place of art: As believing Orthodox Jews, our lives revolve around serving Hashem and Torah. Everything we do is dedicated to that. If art/science/literature is its own goal, where does Hashem come in?

It’s the rare person who can separate as Reb Meir did, the fruit from the peel. People shouldn’t be drawing their moral code from biology as it is currently taught, or statistics, or political science. And every professor I have met claims to be fair and unbiased. Yet we see that people are influenced by what they learn.

What I’m trying to say is that I currently think that art for the sake of art cannot really exist with an Orthodox hashkafah. Hence the pasuk Hashem gave beauty, art, aesthetics, the ability to create structures of theory in the world to Yefes – and he should dwell in the tents of Shem, using it l’shem Shamayim.

If I am mistaken, you are the one person I think may be able to explain it to me. 🙂

Plite: All Concerta is ER, that’s how it differs from Ritalin.

It is synthesized in the laboratory. I have no idea how it could possibly be chametz based on my reading of the Wikipedia article.

“it doesn’t matter” note that that can be read two ways

Popa – I completely agree. Looks certainly do matter. I was being facetious.

Here I’m speaking for girls who think it shouldn’t matter – and for kwaiker above who claims to think that it shouldn’t matter. So I provided an additional justification for Skype.

Kwaiker: If someone’s going for meat value, it doesn’t matter if it’s on Skype or in real life. And the possibility of that is balanced out by the unfairness of wasting a person’s money and time.

OOM, from your quote: “His business is but to describe those who have been speaking or thinking about God and pessimism, how and under what circumstances. The artist should be not the judge of his characters and their conversations, but only an unbiased observer.”

This is a focus on aesthetics that is associated with ???. I am referring to the concept that we don’t believe that art should be objective, it should be sanctified for kedusha.

I know someone who asked this question. As of now, although the Concerta is being packaged by different labels due to pharmaceutical company issues, the generic is exactly the same as the original in the United States.

In Canada, the generic for Concerta is produced differently and you would have to check. This is relatively recent. But the regular is definitely fine (by whoever first produced it, I don’t know who.)

OOM: Interesting. Do you agree with the idea of art for arts’ sake? Does this imply that art should not be influenced by moral values?

To my understanding, that would be the opposite of ??? ?????? ???? ?????? ????? ??.

Yes, but you aren’t so familiar with shidduch dating. I think you shouldn’t have waited a month for a date. I’m a girl and wouldn’t do that. You check references and then go out at soon as possible. It’s not impossible for the girl to come meet you halfway either.

Better to Skype or something, at least then you have an idea if you’d like the other person.

I imagine you refer to the seminary in Israel. I know people from both schools, though. 🙂

It’s not quite a BY, but the girls I know who went there came out very frum. Then again, they went to Israel with the intention that they would become frummer.

There is a large mix of girls, a lot of hashkafah, you don’t need to have strong Hebrew skills. That’s pretty much all I know about it.

Pesach happened because of this question!

Amram asked this question, he said “Why should I have children if they will be thrown into the Nile?” And Miriam told him “Pharaoh is killing the boys, you are going to kill the girls too?” Amram listened to her and Moshe Rabbeinu came out of that.

    Thegra:

I have a source: Adam and Chava had children before he started earning a living.

And in the Midbar, our antecedents lived and had children for 40 years.

Our job is to live and have children. Hashem gives us the parnasa.

Believe it or not, I am like the only person who doesn’t cheat. At all. And I can’t figure out how so many people do better than me on tests since when we study together they don’t know it as well. Unless I think negatively of them.

Squeak: LOL. Thank you. Next time I get asked for this I’m going to inform him that he needs to pay. Cash. (and then say no.)
