Torah613TorahParticipant
I’ll do the page numbers.
Torah613TorahParticipantI shall let them know.
April 16, 2013 10:48 pm at 10:48 pm in reply to: In honor of Yom Haatzmaut. By popa–RETRACTED #946010Torah613TorahParticipant????? in honor of ??? ???????. I agree and value the Dati Le’umiim for their valuation of Israel as a religious entity. I hope everyone has a wonderful day barbecuing and flying flags and ignoring it and listening to speeches.
Torah613TorahParticipantSyag: LOL
SaysMe: Is it possible that there is something you don’t want to share with us that is causing your struggles? It doesn’t make sense that all of a sudden an A student becomes a C student and even considers dropping out.
That something, is probably the issue, more than any ruchnius issues. Or you would have transferred much earlier. Did you fail this semester or last semester?
You really don’t need the As for grad school. You should play whatever it is that is stressing you up into a story. It’s about playing the game right, and your grades are only a small part of the decision. They want diversity. Basically, everything that’s bad for shidduchim, is good for graduate school.
I hear you about summer classes.
“ruchnius pursuits, but don’t immunize. On your thread about brainwashing? yeah that stuff. and the words i hear, things i see- i’ve lost my sensitivity to too much of it.”
SaysMe, this sounds really interesting, but I honestly don’t really understand what you’re saying here. I do understand about losing sensitivity.
Torah613TorahParticipantIf Hillel is there than everyone is there.
Torah613TorahParticipantYes, pretty much. Besides the family dynamics and the fact that they were not frum
Torah613TorahParticipantI doubt SaysMe is considering becoming a brain surgeon. The fact is, if someone wants to have a desk job and be a wife and mother, it is far easier to do so with a college degree. The higher the better, but a BA is minimal.
Torah613TorahParticipantWIY: I thought Rabbi Yosef said to say it.
Torah613TorahParticipantSqueak: LOL. Good point. Thanks for responding.
Torah613TorahParticipantThe only one left is Creduda. Anybody wanna take a stab at it?
Torah613TorahParticipantThanks everyone for the replies! New day, new rules! (that means you Squeak. In case you stayed off because of the title. I’ll make an exception next time.)
Everyone: it is coup d’eCtat. And I think it means a conquering of a new field of mathematics with ecstasy (the feeling, not the drug), at least in context. I wasn’t sure if he’d made it up so I included it.
Writersoul: If you think YOU feel dumb, it is NOTHING compared to how I felt while reading this book. I’m actually supposedly supposed to get something out of it.
And the Hankie of Death is “a quick and easy way to distinguish those points corresponding with irrational numbers from the ones corresponding with rationals.” This quickly and easily took 3 pages, which was actually pretty good for this book.
OneOfMany
Very impressive. You get a brownie point, +1, whatever it is you like to get. 🙂
writersoul
I have to look it up in the real book and see if your analysis makes sense.
Curiosity
LOL, they are. (I copied and pasted) (note how this is all one sentence)
p.55
talmud: Great job!
Especially on Creduda and Mutatis Mutandis.
just my hapence: Very very impressive.
Vicious Infinite Regress -Thank you! Yeah I have gaps, that’s probably why the theory troubles me so much in the first place.
I like your clear definitions.
Apodictic Hygiene – Thanks. He probably means being careful about constructing a logical argument.
Vermiculate – I like that.
Horriplatively – wow impressive.
Mutatis Mutandis – Thanks
Surd – It’s one of those things you know if you spend time around math people. I don’t have anyone to talk about this stuff with most of the time.
JMH, wow. Full marks. +90 (except coup d’ectat). Incredibly impressive. Brilliant. B”N I will quote from the book today or tomorrow so you can see the ones we haven’t figured out yet in context.
Torah613TorahParticipantOK I think it’s time for me to impress you all with my sophistication.
Matuk Kal is my very favorite wine. (just btw, I think dry wine = terrible and have no idea why anyone would drink it. Same goes for beer and spirits.)
I can also tolerate Joyvin, Moscato, Kedem 144, and … that’s it actually. That’s all the wine I know.
Torah613TorahParticipantWhatever the Kollel Store sells.
Torah613TorahParticipantSaysMe:
It’s a very difficult decision.
This is why Touro is so amazing. I can’t even imagine being in the atmosphere I am now for 3 years of basic courses, dealing with the whims of each instructor, without a social group. So I empathize with your struggles.
On the other hand, it sounds like you’re halfway through, which is honestly the hardest time to pull out. You already likely have a considerable financial investment, so besides for losing future income, you have probably depleted your savings somewhat. Besides, you REALLY don’t want to have to repeat all the courses you’ve taken in the future.
If you’re pushing yourself for As, then I would consider accepting Cs and just focus on finishing the degree with minimal work. In the end, all that counts is the paper, and you can always do other stuff for grad school. Also, take summer classes so you can finish it ASAP.
At the same time, get involved in the community. Go to shiurim, do chesed, etc. It will help immunize you to ruchnius issues.
So that’s my advice. Stay in school and finish your BA, but take the pressure off yourself, and work on increasing your social connections in the Jewish world. You can take it or leave it 🙂
Torah613TorahParticipantOK, I’ll quote:
“As it happens, Dr. Goris used always to carry, blow/mop with, and deploy illustratively a large red pocket-handkerchief, which for over 25 years of classes he referred to as the Hankie of Death.”
It’s in a footnote.
Torah613TorahParticipantOOM – What does horripilation mean? That’s VERY impressive (I couldn’t find it even by googling)
Torah613TorahParticipantvicious circle n.
1. A situation in which the apparent solution of one problem in a chain of circumstances creates a new problem and increases the difficulty of solving the original problem. Also called vicious cycle.
2. A condition in which a disorder or disease gives rise to another that subsequently affects the first.
3. Logic A fallacy in reasoning in which the premise is used to prove the conclusion, and the conclusion used to prove the premise.
Torah613TorahParticipantwritersoul: Actually I think the English is just too good.
I googled them.
Vermiculate means to move in a wavy way. That’s a useful word.
If you can’t simplify a number to remove a square root (or cube root etc) then it is a surd.
Mutatis mutandis is a Latin phrase meaning “changing [only] those things which need to be changed”.
Torah613TorahParticipantThe Goq: It wasn’t in mine. I read it as an adult (ironically in a chareidi home in Israel) and understand why.
Torah613TorahParticipantKeep the math out of this thread please. Unless you can explain one of the phrases above.
Torah613TorahParticipantEveryone does it on a first date. After that practicality slowly starts to take over.
Torah613TorahParticipantSyag: That’s a really spooky story. Very interesting and thank you for posting it.
Torah613TorahParticipantWhere did Dr. Nino go to university?
Torah613TorahParticipantI never read it but the people I know who really love her are all really annoying people.
Torah613TorahParticipantI don’t think you should. I think all prayers are good. How about praying a better prayer instead of negating the prayers of others?
Torah613TorahParticipantThe teenager who inspired this thread was extremely amused by everyone’s responses, and adds that it’s ageist.
Torah613TorahParticipantGive me $50 and I’ll daven for you while being quiet as my teenage sibling(s) say bad things about me (and get a cut of the profits)
Torah613TorahParticipantI thought it was funny and rather revealing.
Torah613TorahParticipantBrony – I saw a famous actor once. My friend said he was. But I can’t remember the name though.
I would like to see Obama someday, and make the bracha on seeing a king.
Torah613TorahParticipant“…
But enough blabbering, I never answered your question. *ahem* You don’t post too much if your words are pleasing and pleasant (which they are!) and if your time online is not in place of time you should be spending with either Hashem or other humans. Like when you are on the computer anyway and you are keeping yourself from less ruchnius sites.
And thus endeth my re-emergence soliloquy. “
Syag!!!!!! Thank you! I hope everything gets better from now on, good and only good.
Thank you for your kind words. I hope you are always busy for good reasons with good things.
Torah613TorahParticipantThe Goq: No, they won’t. (Now you can’t stone me for being a navi sheker, since if they do teshuva, they could win) (5:07)
Torah613TorahParticipantWritersoul, I wasn’t referring to you. 🙂
April 14, 2013 11:23 pm at 11:23 pm in reply to: Good major in college for a bais yaakov girl #1008477Torah613TorahParticipantOk, how about Ancient Assyrian Archaeology?
Whatever you do, don’t go for English. Or Creative Writing. I think you should go for accounting, it’s a safe job.
Now seriously: If Touro has a major in it, it’s probably fine for a BY girl. Lots of BY girls go there. So you can pretty much be anything.
If you want to be REALLY safe, you can major in Judaic Studies.
Writersoul’s questions are good.
Torah613TorahParticipantLet me know when I am posting too much. Sometimes I think I should take a break. But since I have to be on the computer for work anyway, I know from past experience that I will just read more news sites instead, which is definitely not better for my ruchniyus than YWN.
Any suggestions? Squeak? Syag LChochma?
Torah613TorahParticipantI hope this topic does not set people off. Understand that this is a valid topic just like any other.
Are you trying to point out that you are a troll? Good job.
Torah613TorahParticipantI’m sure some people can help you, but you’re probably better off asking Mr. Google. He’s helpful, free, and you can get an immediate response. Then post the results of your research and any questions you have, and there is probably a speech therapist on board here who will help you.
Torah613TorahParticipantyetelz: Honestly, this was a throwaway question. I had absolutely no inkling that there was such an inyan. What I do at home is irrelevant. I was just bored of hearing about sem, shidduchim, and weight, then weight, shidduchim and shem, then shidduchim, weight and sem all day, night, evening, and last week.
Torah613TorahParticipantThe latter, mostly.
I wasn’t the one who originally applied the adjective ‘immortal’ to those words, and it annoys me when people do. The only immortal words are Torah.
April 14, 2013 10:22 pm at 10:22 pm in reply to: Good major in college for a bais yaakov girl #1008473Torah613TorahParticipantAtmospheric paleontology is pretty good, I hear.
April 14, 2013 10:21 pm at 10:21 pm in reply to: Are there too many seforim being published today #945329Torah613TorahParticipantI’m with squeak, because inspirational books are basically a waste of time. At least the ones in English.
I think there should be more humor books like Mordechai Schmutter.
Torah613TorahParticipantI don’t try to be grammatically correct in my Hebrew, as long as it sounds good I think it’s fine.
Torah613TorahParticipantAnything in Yiddish Gems by Avraham Fried.
Torah613TorahParticipantDoes Lakewood have an eruv?
Torah613TorahParticipantYW 42: That’s interesting.
Paylesher: Because they can’t find their slippers?
Torah613TorahParticipantThe Kanoi Next Door: +10
Torah613TorahParticipantWhere do you live (approximately)?
Torah613TorahParticipantSecularFrummy: I said that Hashem left loopholes where you could choose to see Him. You asked for examples. But they are just that – loopholes. Teva, nature, is quite literally the “Matbea” the signet ring, of Hashem. The word Olam, world, in Hebrew comes from the same root as He’elem, to hide. Hashem hides Himself in “nature” but does leave us His signature which we can choose to be aware of.
Actually, in the majority of cases, it is mixed up. And no, you can’t argue that, it is quite clear that the thing that makes things matter is nearly impossible to find.
Torah613TorahParticipantLet’s define each date as the set of ordered pairs (popa, date). Each x,y can be judged by any value you choose. So the cardinality of the set of all dates is |{(popa1,date1),(popa2,date2),…,(popan,daten)}|. That’s the number of dates Popa has been on. So Emperor Popa, listen to your wise Grand Vizier, who correctly determined the number of dates.
Torah613TorahParticipantSqueak: Where can he reach you?
Torah613TorahParticipantWow, it sounds positively utopian.
Positive infinity then.
Don’t let us disturb you then.
For after studying: what makes one troll thread successful, and another less successful?
