Frumnotyeshivish: LOL. Thanks for contributing to this discussion.
Many wonderful girls who are true tzidkoniyos and very tzanua do dress in this style, and other wonderful girls who are also true tzidkaniyos and very tzanua feel it is a lack of sensitivity. I thought this would make an interesting thread precisely because it is a sensitivity issue, and not a tznius issue.
Note how careful I was to avoid judgment in the OP, even going so far as to call those wearing it tzidkaniyos in the title.
My personal feelings are just that – my feelings. Thank you for sharing yours. 🙂
writersoul: That’s a good point about fashion moving.
oomis: Also good point. It’s just another fabric.
ujew: Not sure what you mean.
interjection: I know, I always get annoyed at tznius threads started by men too.
You put it very well. It’s not Jewish looking but neither is it untznius. I agree that the basics are far more important. And also, let’s re-emphasize that many frum girls do wear it. I agree it should not be added to the list of forbiddens.
streekgeek: I for one would love to hear your 2c.
Bookworm120: I like your comparison to denim.
Torah613TorahParticipantI always wonder what could have been done to help them.
Torah613TorahParticipantTouro is much cheaper than Stern and you get pretty much the same education. I believe they will be competitive with Stern in every way 10 years from now.
I am aware of 4 Touro schools and they all have gyms.
Frumkeit and sensitivity wise, Touro is also better, as a general rule.
Torah613TorahParticipantFor me reading the Parsha before Shabbos made a big difference.
Also, singing zmiros.
Also, going to a shiur.
Also, doing Bnos groups.
Torah613TorahParticipantSpeaking of leather, I meant to start a thread on the new style to wear leather.
Torah613TorahParticipantAlso Lashon Toiva.
But a Lev tov… oleh al gabayhem.
Torah613TorahParticipantSounds tough. Hashem should help you rise to the challenge!
Torah613TorahParticipantOomis: Personally, I love playing house with more expensive toys. What’s wrong with getting married and enjoying it?
Girls vary in domestic ability. So long as they have the minimal skills to cook supper and clean the house, and plenty of girls learn on the job, I don’t think that should limit when they get married.
I do agree with getting a degree first, or at least having a realistic plan to be financially independent to fall back on.
Torah613TorahParticipantHmmm. That’s a good substitute for those on persimmon-free diets.
Torah613TorahParticipantYou should try to stay in all-girls programs as long as possible or at least until you marry.
Torah613TorahParticipantSyag: So how did you deal with the gaava?
Torah613TorahParticipantSomeone I know bought an expensive sefer to make someone feel good.
Torah613TorahParticipantA persimmon is like a tomato, but sweet like a berry, and with a slight pumpkin flavor.
Torah613TorahParticipantDating is not tznius. They should not date at any age. They should have beshows.
Torah613TorahParticipantstreekgeek, if you post long enough, you’ll eventually meet a few, and then you’ll decide.
November 4, 2013 3:03 pm at 3:03 pm in reply to: What time an 18-year-old bachur should be home motzei Shabbos? #985216Torah613TorahParticipantWIY, most of your threads are focused on what other people should be doing. Just an observation.
Torah613TorahParticipantMeet me at K and E. 34 at 3 AM. I’m the balding guy with a leather jacket.
Seriously, ask your friends, anything except the internet.
Torah613TorahParticipantRationalfrummie: Think about it. People pay $200 for therapy. Applying to Harvard is a much better self esteem boost than therapy.
Torah613TorahParticipantNo life is purposeless. All life is precious. It is a pity if it is wasted, but no less precious.
Torah613TorahParticipantVeltz: You think that if Popa had a wife, she’d let him post this on yeshiva world?!
Torah613TorahParticipantWomen can even learn Gemara. When they’re done Ein Yaakov then they can start the halacha parts.
Torah613TorahParticipantFor the sake of shalom bayis, I think you should hang it up.
Torah613TorahParticipantToday and tomorrow!
Torah613TorahParticipantJust to clarify, I was joking above. I’m a frum woman who went to college and think it is generally a good idea if you have a realistic way to use the degree. It is a bad idea if you are very weak academically, have no idea what you want to do, and don’t have the money.
October 31, 2013 4:20 pm at 4:20 pm in reply to: More leitzanus about ovrei aveirah. Mrs. Lopatin style. #984596Torah613TorahParticipantSam2: Not to go off topic, but I lump them all together because frankly, the women I’ve met from Hadar/Drisha were interchangeable frumkeit wise with those in YCT. And they say the same things.
If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck but isn’t counted in a minyan, still a duck imho.
October 31, 2013 3:37 pm at 3:37 pm in reply to: More leitzanus about ovrei aveirah. Mrs. Lopatin style. #984594Torah613TorahParticipantI appreciate when Popa posts these threads.
Sometimes I read stuff that comes out of the YCT/Hadar etc camp, and I know intuitively that it is hashkafically misguided, but can’t put into words what exactly is wrong with it to stand up for it, whether by writing a comment or saying something to the person who sent me the literature.
Thank you, Popa, for making it explicit and enabling people to respond effectively to attacks on Torah and mesorah.
Torah613TorahParticipantThe academics in BYA is like a red, red rose
That’s newly sprung, in June;
Everything else in BYA is like a melodie
That’s sweetly play’d, in tune.
With apologies to Robert Burns.
More seriously, google it, or at least search before asking… you’re not the first person to want information and people can’t post every time you want to know something.
Torah613TorahParticipantI’m against college for women, but you should go to Touro. It’s a real degree and cheaper and more frum-friendly than anywhere else.
Torah613TorahParticipantWith thanks to Hashem, I am pleased to announce that my room has been ant-free for 2 months now.
Torah613TorahParticipantIt’s muttar if it’s dead and down.
October 31, 2013 3:18 pm at 3:18 pm in reply to: The last rebellious thing you did as a teenager. #984577Torah613TorahParticipantI don’t remember exactly, but it may have involved a herd of pink elephants, popa bar abba, and sour pickles that weren’t purchased at Walmart.
Torah613TorahParticipantInternet, of course.
Torah613TorahParticipantIt’s safer to take a boat.
Torah613TorahParticipantJust take your address and add Rebbe at the end. I’m the 30 Hartford St. Rebbe.
Torah613TorahParticipantToday I made 3 pumpkin pies (from an 8 lb raw pumpkin) and 4 apple pies. 🙂
Torah613TorahParticipantI peel it first, hasn’t been an issue.
October 28, 2013 12:22 am at 12:22 am in reply to: If you spoke with a stranger and they seemed like _____ poster, would you ask? #983514Torah613TorahParticipantYes, and I have, and they either were the person or knew the person. 🙂
Torah613TorahParticipantWhy do you look down at snobs? Some of my best friends are snobs and I don’t look down at them.
Torah613TorahParticipantAre lollipops more desirable than whole wheat bread? Maybe, but you need both.
Torah613TorahParticipantI had a teacher once who recommended that we listen to a tape describing the suffering of Gehennom for an hour before we go to sleep.
While it is important to be aware of schar v’onesh, wanting to get a reward or to avoid punishment shouldn’t be the reason we serve Hashem.
October 8, 2013 10:55 pm at 10:55 pm in reply to: Why no mention of Rav Ovadiah in Monsey/Lakewood, etc. #978742Torah613TorahParticipantMy Ashkenazic facebook friends have been posting about it.
Torah613TorahParticipantMaybe the place where they tore kriyah is not easy to see in pictures.
October 8, 2013 10:53 pm at 10:53 pm in reply to: Is eating in succah on Shabbos Breishis considered Bal Tosef? #977946Torah613TorahParticipantIt’s bal tigra from Oneg Shabbos.
Torah613TorahParticipantMy siblings call it Geneiva Shark.
It’s easier to listen on grooveshark than from a CD player, and I do try to listen to CD’s we bought.
Torah613TorahParticipantSelf-publish it on the internet and have people buy it online. Best way to get a feel for how good you really are.
Torah613TorahParticipantToday I made banana strawberry muffins, based on food.com’s easy moist banana blueberry muffins.
These muffins are delicious and so easy to make! I get 24 muffins out of what they say is 12 muffins, using regular sized cupcake holders.
3 large ripe bananas
3/4 cups sugar
1 egg, slightly beaten
1/3 cup oil (instead of melted butter)
1 cup whole strawberries (diced after measuring) (instead of blueberries) (You can even dice an apple and use it if you don’t have berries)
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt (omitted. Can’t tell the difference.)
1 1/2 cups flour
Directions:
1. Mash bananas in a large mixing bowl. (I use a hand mixer)
2. Add sugar and egg.
3. Add oil and berries.
4. Combine dry ingredients and gently stir into banana mixture. (hand mixer again)
5. Fills 24 cupcake holders halfway. They grow when cooking so if you make them bigger they will spill over.
Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes.
October 8, 2013 4:04 am at 4:04 am in reply to: How can I find where to give a kvittle in Rochel Imeinu's Kever? #978021Torah613TorahParticipantI’m sure Kupat Ha’ir and Va’ad Harabbanim will be happy to do so.
But why don’t you save it for aniyei ircha?
Torah613TorahParticipantWelcome back, Syag!
Torah613TorahParticipantPhiladelphia is a good yeshiva, it shouldn’t be too hard to get into Lakewood.
Torah613TorahParticipantfkelly: Frequent posters burn tons of calories typing posts on yeshiva world.
