February 23, 2016 3:06 am at 3:06 am in reply to: which is frummest? football, baseball, basketball or hockey? #1139538theprof1ParticipantThe most fun a yeshiva bochur can have is coming to grips with a difficult tosfos. Ecstasy when you figure out pshat. No twisted knees, no twisted ankles, no broken wrists. And the reward for yegiyah in Torah. Unlimited. Who can ask for more.
February 22, 2016 5:12 am at 5:12 am in reply to: Is there an accredited resource to use for learning the Talmud/Rishonim? #1138280theprof1ParticipantThe best dictionary is Jastrow.
theprof1ParticipantAhavas yisroel and gemilas chasodim arev also great mitzvos. why not practice those mitzvos for a while. although you can also hook yourself up with a good schorrer and walk around with him.
theprof1ParticipantIf you want to know which Daf, go to OU.org.
theprof1ParticipantEmunah is Faith, faith that Hashem is One and the Only One. Emunah is the posuk Shema Yisroel. Bitachon is emunah, belief and faith that Hashem runs it all and that He will do and knows what is best for all of us. Of course we need both of these concepts in our lives constantly. If we use our inner intellectual eyes instead of our material eyes, we will see this on a daily basis. Think about your life and you’ll see how Hashem constantly watches over you and helps you in everything you do. Bitachon is more than hoping. Its KNOWING, through emunah, that Hashem is with you.
February 19, 2016 3:53 pm at 3:53 pm in reply to: Orthodox hats for Shabbos — what do you wear? #1151977theprof1ParticipantWhy don’t you go to a store like bencraft or hat box or kova and try on some hats and see what you like.
theprof1ParticipantWhatever happened to Dennis the Menace? He changed his last name to Trump.
theprof1Participantaccording to chazal, if you’re learning torah and you look out and say, how beautiful are those flowers, thats called bitul torah. going out for a smoke is double bitul cause you’re killing yourself too.
theprof1ParticipantFirst become realistic. Then find a job. Work a little. Or open a fruit store. That’s a nice business for pea brains.
theprof1ParticipantSarah Schneirer started Bais Yakov schools with the exact mission of teaching girls Torah. She was supported strongly by the Gerrer Rebbe ztvkl and most of the polish rebbes, plus the Litvak rosh yeshivas and the German rabbonim. Without the Bais Yakovs our frum generations would have gone.
theprof1Participantgood hot soup.
theprof1ParticipantI learn chumash with a sefer called “chok l’yisroel” it has the chumash, targum, rashi. all in 6 portions for each day, friday being the longest. then each day there is a portion from neiviem and ksuvim. then mishna, and gemorah, rambam, zohar and mussar, very interesting way of learning a lot.
theprof1ParticipantI learn an hour Daf Yomi before shachris. After breakfast I learn the parsha in a sefer called Chok L’Yisroel. This has the parsha by each day. Then there are portions to learn from the haftorah, from Kesuvim, mishna, gemorah, zohar, rambam, mussar. That’s about an hour or so. Later I learn a chasidish sefer. And then again gemorah. Altogether about 4 hours a day.
February 8, 2016 4:23 am at 4:23 am in reply to: How Do I Know I've Ever Properly Performed Any Mitzvah? #1136302theprof1ParticipantEchod hamarbe, v’echod hamamit. some do more, some do less. as long as you have the correct intentions, don’t worry. you have credit. just keep on doing your mitzvos. eat matzo, observe shabbos, put on tefilin, daven, lain krias shema. eat in the succah. hear shofar. give tzedoko and do chesed. you’le be in great spiritual shape.
February 1, 2016 7:18 pm at 7:18 pm in reply to: Does anyone know if there is such a statement….? #1195187theprof1ParticipantMEDRASH EICHO BRINGS SEVERAL CHAZAL WHO TRY TO EXPLAIN THE POSUK IN YIRMIYAHU THAT SAYS; WHY WERE KLAL YISROEL THROWN OUT OF THEIR LAND, BECAUSE THEY DESERTED THE TORAH, THEY STOPPED GIVING TORAH RESPECT AND LEARNING PROPERLY. ANOTHER POSUK SAYS, BECAUSE YOU DESERTED ME (HASHEM) AND MY TORAH YOU DID NOT OBSERVE. SAYS THE MEDRASH: HALEVAI YOU WOULD HAVE LEFT ME BUT MY TORAH STILL OBSERVED. BECAUSE THE HOLY LIGHT IN THE TORAH AND THE STRENGTH OF DOING MITZVOS WOULD MAKE PEOPLE FEEL AND UNDERSTAND WHY THEY SHOULD HAVE HASHEM IN THEIR HEARTS. JUST AS FIRST THEY STOPPED RESPECTING HASHEM, THEN DESERTED THE TORAH; SO TOO BY GOING BACK TO TORAH, THEY WOULD GO BACK TO HASHEM.
theprof1ParticipantR’ CHAIM COHEN IS A GAON IN CHOSHEN MISHPOT AND AN EXTREMELY HONEST PERSON. BEST PLACE TO GO.
theprof1ParticipantIn a 9×13 aluminum pan, arrange the following. beautiful shalach monos and its exactly what is meant by halacha to be. a meal.
braise several slices of minute steak in onions and red wine. arrange on one end. below that arrange slices of grilled chicken breast marinated in duck sauce, bbq sauce and red wine. below that arrange baby colored peppers stuffed with sauteed chopped shallots and chopped bella mushrooms, baked for 30 minutes at 375. below that arrange baby red and white potatoes, sprayed with olive oil and garlic and pepper and baked for one hour at 375.
theprof1ParticipantAnything from fish that you can’t see the original source fish to determine if its kosher, requires a hechsher. If you buy any type of fish filets, they need a hechsher. Clear halacha in shulchan orech.
theprof1Participantmirrors reflect according to the angle that they are viewed from. if you look at a mirror from one side, you’ll see the reflection from the opposite side. you dont see staight ahead unless you are standing straight in front.
theprof1ParticipantShlomo Potash. No idea phone but he is the best.
theprof1Participanti’m not sure that helfgott is the best. chaim adler in israel is pretty great
theprof1ParticipantIts possible that the generations that followed did not like those names. Maybe Rav Tarfon’s children weren’t thrilled with that name. Yet there are thousands of Akivas around now. And many Alexanders. Does anybody know a Shaltiel? I do, my friends son. How about Saryahu? I had a friend with that name. Times change and names with them.
theprof1ParticipantThe biggest problem in Lakewood, more than in Monsey, is the yeshiva situation. Where are all the rich people who sold their Flatbush houses for $2 million and bought huge houses in Lakewood for $500,000? Housing in Lakewood is much cheaper than Monsey. Lakewood also is a city setting while Monsey is like the country, roads up and around hills. Commute to Manhattan is so much easier and faster from Monsey. Monsey is very chasidish too. Truth is, me personally, I’d rather stay in Brooklyn. Shuls on every block, yeshivos and BY galore. Tuition pretty affordable. Shopping everywhere for anything.
theprof1ParticipantThe anti State of Israel people say that Israel was made by the sitra achre, the soton. can’t be. sheker doesn’t last that long. so israel was made by Hashem, to compensate for WW2. part of the angst of geula.
theprof1ParticipantDid you all know that Hashem decided that Klal Yisroel should exist as 12 basically separate nations when we entered Canaan. It wasn’t until hundreds of years later that the Jewish nation united came into being. Hashem sent us all over the world. Seemingly fragmented, but we weren’t. We were united in Torah. But we still have what the Princes of Israel did at the chanukas ha’mishkon. They brought the same korbonos, but all had different reasons. We can and are one nation even if we seem to have different ways. A Yid is a Yid because he believes and practices Torah. How many non-bearded Jews learn Daf Yomi every day on the LIRR? How many bearded Jews daven in 15 minutes and run off to do business? Beard beard where is your Yid?
theprof1ParticipantThe story with Mike Tress is true but you still won’t be allowed to daven at the omud without a beard and mikva first.
theprof1ParticipantThere are lenses called High Definition. They allow you to see at the edges, the same as in the middle. Great for people who need high prescription numbers. The lenses aren’t so thick. Also great for Varilux lenses.
theprof1ParticipantI WAS ONCE IN THE HOSPITAL AND MY NEIGHBOR, AN OLD NON JEW, ITALIAN, HAD UNCLE MOISHE ON HIS TV. HAD NO IDEA WHAT WAS GOING ON
December 30, 2015 10:55 pm at 10:55 pm in reply to: What did people do before Rashi invented Rashi tefillin? #1120088theprof1ParticipantUp to Rashi’s time, people actually would put on either Rashi or Rabbeinu Tam or both. Rashi finally made the psak that his interpretation of the order was correct and all the rabbonim of that time accepted it. One concept is that both pair were worn, the debate was which pair should be worn first. Chasidim wear both pairs after their wedding. Those who wear only Rashi tefilin are not transgressing anything.
theprof1ParticipantHere’s good side dish, no eggs. Cook wild rice mixed with white rice until fluffy, usually 40 minutes for about 1 cup. Add 2 tbs olive oil to the water before cooking. Saute chopped kale or chopped spinach and chopped scallions. After the rice is done, add that to the rice and mix well. Add 3 tbs sweet and sour duck sauce and mix well. Serve. Enjoy.
theprof1ParticipantYavneh in Cleveland, Great seminary and its small.
theprof1Participant50 years ago the Torah Vodas dormitory was known as the best food of all dormitory yeshivos. TV still has great food. As a rule, yeshivos definitely serve better food than years ago. I really don’t know where you get your info from.
theprof1ParticipantAs a general rule I would say NOT. Many very interesting halacha discussions go on in here. Plus many interesting advice questions which are discussed. I think a mosheiv laitzim is what you make of it.
theprof1ParticipantREITS was the best yeshiva in America in the 1930s and 40s. Somehow YU moved its emphasis of Torah and Madoh, as promulgated by the Rov, to an emphasis on secular education. Along with that went the dream of a “modern” Orthodoxy. The so called modern frum developed a distaste for the ultra orthodox and chasidim, who looked down at them for going so secular. and started going more left. When you teach your kids that mainstream orthodoxy is wrong, they go along with that. Becoming more secular, especially on a college campus, means going off the derech. But still, you cant generalize. The 5 towns, which was the capital of modern orthodoxy, has gone seriously to the right.
theprof1ParticipantPT is a great career. It will allow you to learn too. Great choice.
theprof1ParticipantHallel is a mitzvo she’hazman gromoh and isn’t required of women. Daily davening is required.

December 4, 2015 8:47 pm at 8:47 pm in reply to: Do you know why the crock pot was invented? #1115211theprof1ParticipantThe Naxon Utilities Corporation of Chicago, under the leadership of Irving Naxon, developed the Naxon Beanery All-Purpose Cooker. Naxon was inspired by a story his Jewish grandmother told about how back in her native Lithuanian shtetl, her mother made a stew called cholent, which took several hours to cook in an oven
theprof1ParticipantThe sefer Shearim Metzuyonim B’Halacho says clearly that the individual who makes a mistake and keeps davening a weekday shemoneh esrei on Friday night, should NOT say vesein tal u’motor since an individual goes according to what the tzibbur says and the tzibbur is not saying it Friday night.
theprof1ParticipantI would like to ask those who think that herring is vile. Do you also think that sushi is vile?
theprof1ParticipantWhen I was learning for smicha we went to a slaughter house to watch shechita. The rav was an old man, he laughed at us and called us the “erev” rav.
theprof1ParticipantMy ex-wife loved herring, as did her mother. Her mother made a great schmaltz herring. I would make matjas herring. She loved that too.
theprof1Participantbeers in america made do require a hechsher because they often add a treif ingredient to make a head. european brewers never add anything to their beers. its against the law to put in anything besides malt and hops and water.
theprof1Participantgive tzedoko to rabbi meir baal haness and say, l’zichron rav akiva ber from amsterdam. works everytime. my client got back $20,000 cash that he had lost. a friend of mine found a $10,000 diamond that he had lost.

theprof1Participantbest cholent recipe is the mix that your family likes. just experiment and you’ll get it. sefardim use rice and i dont like that. doesnt mean their recipe isnt good. main thing is that a hot stew thing on shabbos is a symbol of yiddishkeit. just do it and enjoy.
theprof1ParticipantRabbi Elberg was niftar in 1995. HaPardes stopped at that time. The original Rav Pardes who founded the journal lived next door to me in Chicago.
