The Queen of PersiaMember
Joseph:
Veretzky might be a possibility. I’ll look into it. I’ve heard that Ch’san Sofer is on too high a level. But maybe not. I’ll look into that again, as well.
Yashar Koach!!!!! Bli neder… I’ll keep you posted as to the outcome of my inquiries.
The Queen of PersiaMemberWhat happened to the chicken who slept under the car?
The Queen of PersiaMemberI’m not sure if this question would go under this category but one thing is for sure: I feel absolutely stupid and embarrassed asking anyone I know…. as obviously, something must be wrong with me (and of course, my entire family as well) for having such a problem in the first place.
The truth is, despite my embarrassment I have asked several Rabbonim …. but haven’t yet gotten an answer. My son (age 17) sits at home day after day for LACK OF A YESHIVA TO GO TO!!!! Maybe somebody out there can give me some suggestions.
We are looking for a combination litvish/chassidish yeshiva. More on the litvish side… but with chassidish levush (even if it’s the minority… he shouldn’t be different from everyone) and preferably Yiddish speaking.
Unfortunately he is only a “B” student. Too weak for Novominsk (Boro Park) or Me’or Yitzchok (Monsey) or Tal Torah (Flatbush). Yeshivas seem to be geared to either top “A” students, or, lehefech… kids that need to be saved from the streets. But there doesn’t seem to be anything for the good kids who are caught in the middle.
He is a GOOD boy. Not a troublemaker at all. In the entire tri-state area… we haven’t found even ONE yeshiva. We’ve also looked in Israel. Slabodka and Amalah shel Torah (Beit Shemesh) are too high a level. The Mir is so big that he’d probably get lost there. But we really do prefer to keep him in the States. Preferably a small, warm heimishe place.
Any suggestions???
The Queen of PersiaMemberMariner: I can testify that it is impossible to calculate dates correctly. My husband, Achashveirosh, made that mistake already and the rest was history. 🙂
The Queen of PersiaMemberSunday is the easiest supper to prepare. It’s called “leftover Shabbos”.
The Queen of PersiaMemberI can only try: You’re right. I assumed that all the liars were bnei liars and all the truthniks were bnei truthniks. I’ve never heard the riddle asked any other way.
The Queen of PersiaMemberWith Walmart I think it’s a matter of luck, who happens to be working in the Customer Service and what type of a mood they happen to be in that day.
The Queen of PersiaMemberI can only try: Yankel’s one and only question should be: Which way would YOUR FATHER tell me to go? (liar would lie about what his father would have answered, which also would have been a lie. Two negatives equals a positive). Another answer could be: Which way would you great-grandfather tell me to go! And so on…..
The Queen of PersiaMemberTo “Don’t have Internet”: your name is an oxymoron. How can you check all those websites if you don’t have internet?
Hey Feivel: This can definitely be a controversial topic. Many of the shoes sold today are “creations” straight out of the Netherworld. Weird ain’t the word. Pointy toes and high, high, high heels and glittery and shmaltzy and STRANGE. Have you ever thought how uncomfortable it must be to wear those things? But hey… what’s a little discomfort (or even a lot) when you’re dealing with STYLE?
The Queen of PersiaMemberHey Duvdl, don’t listen to illini07. I think you’re as smart as they come. I agree with you 100%.
The Queen of PersiaMemberI remember that as soon as Lakewoood came out with their new 59 oz. bottle (a couple years ago?) Golden Flow put big ads in all the papers announcing that theirs holds more (64 oz), and people shouldn’t be tricked by the other company.
The Queen of PersiaMemberOh… Baruch Hashem…. my memory seems to be returning. Mixolydian, if I recall, is a mode of sound which uses the same tones as the major scales, except for the seventh. How could I ever have forgotten? 🙂
Bottom line: Neilah is in a major scale, whereas Tal/Geshem are in minor.
By the way…. talking about nusach…. what’s most frustrating are the errors people make in the nusach of Kaddish.
The Queen of PersiaMembercantoresq: mixolydian?????? oh my! I guess I’ll have to do some more research and get back to you. hmmmmm…… mixolydian…….something must have come over me that I’ve forgotten my simple English. Oy vey…..
The Queen of PersiaMemberSqueak: Let me clarify. According to many posts, Life Insurance is a MUST, and any other opinion is WRONG. All I’m trying to say is that there ARE OTHER OPINIONS. Even if they are the minority. And yes, yes, yes! I do agree that it is a minority opinion. But an opinion it is, never the less.
The Queen of PersiaMemberIn our shul it’s nusach, nusach, nusach all the way. Taken straight from Europe. Tal, Geshem & Neilah, although similar…. are different. And, true, most Bar Mitzvah boys do not know how to layn… but the few who do… can do it well if they want to. By the way…. does anybody know if there exists anywhere in the world the proper niggun for EMES? (Iyov, Mishlei, Tehillim). There was an older Yid (in his 90’s) in Haifa, about 20 years ago who knew it well. But I don’t think it was recorded.
The Queen of PersiaMembertsgssdk: How can you speak for all gedolim? We asked a very prominent gadol whether or not to get life insurance years ago and he paskend against it. (for us). He is also against this panic to procure passports. And who is to say that a tragedy cannot occur in the “country” of Israel? (chas v’shalom). Nobody knows for sure.
The Queen of PersiaMemberSpeaking about preparing to flee…. there is a very clear remez in sefer Yechezkel of both Obama & McKain, in the very pesukim that discuss the war of Gog & MaGog. In Perek Lamed Ches, pesukim Bais & Gimmel.
Obama: Starting with the word “Nasi” in the middle of the pasuk, count every seven letters and you get Aleph, Vav, Bais, Aleph, Mem, Hey.
And John (McKain): Same pasuk Bais, it’s written in Roshei Taivos. The words “Gog Eretz HaMagog Nasi”. The Gimmel in Gog has a dagesh so its really a “Jimmel” (according to Taimani pronunciation). So you’ve got Jimmel, Aleph, Hey, Nun. I heard that McKain is alluded to twice but I wasn’t told where. I think it’s in the same area.
The Queen of PersiaMemberYanky55…. If my personal Rav told me to go out and buy a gun then yes, I certainly would do so. But ya know what? He didn’t say such a thing… and so I have no intention of doing so. Since when does a frum Jew not follow Daas Torah? Chas V’Chalilah!
The Queen of PersiaMemberRabbiofBerlin: He was speaking about the government. Not the land. Sorry, but I didn’t exactly write down, nor was it recorded (pele pleloim!), what he said on Shabbos.
The Queen of PersiaMemberTo RabbiofBerlin:
Rabbi Nachman Bulman ztz”l often spoke very strongly against the corrupt medina. Having lived in Migdal HaEmek and being part of his community for several years I had the opportunity to hear his drashos each and every Shabbos. “A medina built on such a shaky foundation cannot possibly have a kiyum” were his words. And boy, did the rafters shake when he got excited. His keen perception was awesome.
The Queen of PersiaMemberTo all of you who have been lambasting me for not being in favor of insurance… did you not read my original post that I DID consult a Rav? The example that I cited of A&B and C&D was an example given by Rav Y.Z. Bloch at a Melislas Yesharim shiur about 4 years ago. He was speaking about Shaar HaBitachon. I did NOT make it up. Does he hold that the average person SHOULD have insurance? I’m pretty sure he does. But that doesn’t make it right for everybody.
And to RabbiofBerlin: Chas V’Shalom to even think that I would say anything negative against ERETZ Yisroel. It was only against MEDINAT Yisroel that I spoke. According to Rav Bulman Ztz”l, anything built on such a shaky foundation is bound to fall.
mdlevine: look in sefer Yeshaiah…. (I’ll try to look up the exact source later), regarding an earthquake in E”Y at the time of Moshiach…. the likes of which none of us have ever seen.
Bottom line: do teshuva.
The Queen of PersiaMemberInsuranceguy: please be assured that we spoke to rabbonim on this matter and it is not so clear cut. I would like to contend that davka having an insurance policy could cause a “burden” on the family. Let me explain why…
A & B are a married couple without insurance. It was decreed in shamayim that A should die. But it was NOT decreed that B should be left poor. Hence A was given more years of life in order that B should not suffer what he (B) does not deserve.
C & D are a married couple with insurance. It was decreed in shamayim that C should die. It was not decreed that D should be poor. No problem! They have insurance!!! C can die as decreed and D will not be affected financially.
Nu?
The Queen of PersiaMemberPashuteh Yid: Yes, I have insurance on my home and also on my car. But that’s only because I have NO CHOICE. I have nothing against people who own life insurance, either. I know that many Rabbonim hold that it’s OK. But there’s a difference between “OK” and “preferable”. Each person should make his own decisiion based on daas Torah. We, personally, do not hold by it.
Kitzur_dot_net: I’ve already spent enough years in Israel (practically a decade). It’s much easier to raise children to be ehrliche yidden here in the States than there in that treifene medina.
The Queen of PersiaMemberBeacon: Who says Eretz Yisrael is the safest place in the world? I heard just the opposite. What is your source?
The Queen of PersiaMemberDaas Torah is there to ask for everything. Yes, EVERYTHING!!! Halacha and HASHKAFA. If the rabbonim felt that we should all run for passports to possibly flee the country do you think they would all sit back quietly? To Moe613: You’re right on the mark. I definitely do NOT believe in insurance and wouldn’t take out a policy even if you paid me for it. When I read the responses of the other people on this sight I am often shocked at the lack of proper hashkafos.
The Queen of PersiaMemberIt certainly does not seem like Daas Torah to me. Who did they ask?
The Queen of PersiaMemberTo “Give me a Break”
I’m not supporting tzar baalei chaim. If enough people get together to institue a change in how the chickens are treated, the entire minhag could turn into one big kiddush Hashem. We have close to 100 chickens squalking around our yard every year and we are very careful to keep them well fed and make sure they have enough water to drink. The smell is another story, though. Other than throwing down tons of sawdust there isn’t much that can be done about it. So far we have very understanding neighbors.
The Queen of PersiaMemberWhat works best for us is scooping it out with a spoon and serving it in a fancy cupcake tin.
The Queen of PersiaMemberA few times I’ve commented on something, careful not to say any loshon hora or write anything that can be construed even slightly to be against halacha, but perhaps because the comments went against someone else’s personal opinion I’ve been raked over the coals. It’s happened a few times. I’ve practically stopped commenting. I’m sure that I’ll receive some sort of flack for commenting now!
The Queen of PersiaMemberGive me a Break:
So the problem of using chickens for kapparos has nothing to do with the minhag, but rather everything to do with the beforehand tzar baalei chaim. That makes sense. However, the chickens are not so mistreated as you make it sound. First of all, they usually arrive at the designated kapparah place half dead. (the ones used in the shlacht houses all year round that you buy from the store also arrive at their destination in pretty bad shape with all sorts of machlos. That’s where the doctors from the USDA come in). At any rate, from all that I’ve observed (up front) the chickens are fed well and given to drink. But sometimes it’s too late… due to their poor health from the start. Perhaps we should go to the root of the problem and complain to the farmers and truckers who ship them under such poor conditions. But all of this is NOT to detract from the heiligkeit of the minhag.
The Queen of PersiaMemberMayan_Dvash….. maybe you should look it up! Just to make sure…..
The Queen of PersiaMemberI meant to say…. to DAVEN moooooooosaf!
The Queen of PersiaMemberA corny one I heard from my 6 year old:
Question: Why did the cow go to shul?
Answer: To dave Mooooooosaf!
The Queen of PersiaMemberTo Give me a Break:
What is your view on shechting korbonos in the Baie HaMikdash?
The Queen of PersiaMemberI’ve got a YWN icon on my toolbar and click in to check out the latest news at least 3 times a day. Sometimes more. Sometimes lots more. It’s great! Am I addicted? Absolutely. 🙂
