The parent body of almost any school has a wide variety of differing opinions. There is simply no way for the school to implement all the many ideas the parents have — as different parents in the school have different, and conflicting, opinions.
Furthermore, almost no parent pays the full cost a Yeshiva incurs in educating their children. A large portion of the cost comes from third-party donors (i.e. Tzedakah) as the tuition does not cover the full cost of the schooling.
October 11, 2012 6:13 pm at 6:13 pm in reply to: Working parent letter: two implementable ideas I posted #899448In NYC the Board of Ed. mandates 180 days of schooling a year. Check your school calendar.
Limudei Kodesh only days legally valid towards the 180 days count.

Actually, German Jews had one of the highest survival rates from the holocaust, since they were able to see what the Nazi’s were planning long before everyone else (since they lived in Germany) and many escaped, whereas by time the Nazis overran other European countries it was too late to escape.
Being a Yekke, unlike most other sects of Judaism, entails being born a Yekke. Other sects include transforming, changing ????? and deciding to do what you want. Not Yekkes.
Actually, that is true with all sectors of Judaism. Nothing unique to Yekkes.
It is also very difficult for anyone to determine whether a driveway is legal or illegal. You can check nyc.gov and the DOB will display any permits to build a driveway, which would indicate it is legal. But many property driveways were grandfathered into being legal a number of decades ago when the city really began to seriously regulate driveways. And if so, it may be a legal driveway but there is no way to see that through an online search. The only way to really determine whether it is legal or not, is to do an extensive manual record search of DOB and other city documents at their government offices.

I agree with your comment, OOM. But, my personal opinion is that those who have preserved that age old dynamic are comparatively much better off for it.
When I was going out with my husband, my yo’etz told me to see how he reacts in a situation which would upset him. It was very good advice!
So what did you do to upset your husband (well, your date at the time) to see how he would react?
Now if we could develop a sensitive, vetted, no opening, no refund, “sealed box” system for shiduchim ?
twisted: That’s exactly how Jewish marriages were traditionally arranged between the groom and bride’s fathers, in advance.
The Aruch Hashulchan (O.C. 668, 2 & 3) says not to eat in a Succa on Shmini Atzeres. And the A”H wasn’t Chasidish.
Feminism coming from anywhere is a spit upon the Torah and society itself.
No Tefilin.
It isn’t a Chasidishe minhag. Like “old man” said above, both these minhagim are over 1,000 years old. Both 100% valid with different Rishonim, Achronim and Gedolim on both sides of the minhagim.

Feminists. The whole shtick. Even having a lulav and even coming to shul itself. That they went overboard, demonstrates it all.
You get 25 gigs if you pay for an annual or monthly plan for additional storage.
when I cut the line, they look at me like I took something away from them.
When you cut the line, you slow down everyone else on the line behind you — causing them to be unable to make the 7 full rounds! So, of course, you shouldn’t cut. What makes your 7 rounds more important than everyone else’s 7 rounds?

October 7, 2012 12:48 am at 12:48 am in reply to: Working parent letter: two implementable ideas I posted #899386No, I’m talking about the Litvishe mosdos. Chaim Berlin, Torah Vodaas, Mir, etc. do not have any “mid-winter vacation”, other than a couple days off for Chanukah.
Piryeh verivyah is still a mitzvah regardless of the number of children one has. One cannot decide to stop doing a mitzvah.
I am truly impressed that Dr. BRAINFREEZE Ph.D. has accomplished what no other medical professional in the universe has yet accomplished: Diagnosed a mental health condition based upon a limited number of posts a parent of the diagnosee has made on an online forum, without ever having met or even having spoken to the parent, let alone the patient.

October 5, 2012 9:42 pm at 9:42 pm in reply to: Working parent letter: two implementable ideas I posted #899384In Brooklyn, while none of the major boys yeshivas give any “winter vacation”, they do give two or three days off for Chanukah. One is usually a full day while the other day or two is a Friday/Sunday off.
Not allowing toeiva marriage is NOT more regulations.
What about not allowing public nudity? Is that too much regulation?
Because Chasidish boys get married at around age 18 (usually between age 17 and 19) to Chasidish girls of the same age (18). So there are an even number of boys and girls in the shidduch market.
In contrast, among the Litvish the 23 year old boys marry the 20 year old girls. Since there is an age gap, with the average Choson being older than the average Kallah, there are less boys and more girls in shidduchim. So there will always be a certain percent of Litvish girls left over who can never marry.
The solution (on the communal level) is for Litvish boys to follow the Chazal of Shemone Esrei L’Chupa. By doing this, marrying younger, it will reduce (or eliminate) the age gap.
The solution on the individual level is for Litvish girls to get married as early as possible, so that they should not Chas V’Shalom be the one who is left over with no one to marry.
October 5, 2012 5:04 am at 5:04 am in reply to: Working parent letter: two implementable ideas I posted #899361Even the boy schools abcd2 mentions only give one full day (Monday) off. Though none of the major Yeshivas I know give any days off for winter vacation.
October 5, 2012 4:26 am at 4:26 am in reply to: Working parent letter: two implementable ideas I posted #899359I know many Yeshivas in Brooklyn (Yeshivish/Litvish and Chasidish) and none give the boys as much as a single day off as winter vacation.
October 5, 2012 3:46 am at 3:46 am in reply to: Working parent letter: two implementable ideas I posted #899357Boy’s Yeshivas do not have any winter vacation. (None of the many I am aware of, certainly.)
The OP is simply pointing out that it is illegal for a homeowner to simply cut (lower) the sidewalk near their home so they can drive their car to park it on their property, without obtaining a governmental license to do so.
And if they do illegally designate an area of a curb as their private entrance to a non-official driveway, anyone can legally park in front of the sidewalk curb and block the entrance to their illegal driveway.
October 5, 2012 2:45 am at 2:45 am in reply to: Radical Proposal to Help Save Some of Our Crisis' #898792It’s too crazy. It could never be implemented. Almost no one from the other areas will voluntarily move and there is no way to force them.
