By the way, it looks like there are varying degrees to this. Doing big stuff like teleporting, flying, turning invisible, seem to be out of the question. Then there’s stuff like Tefillos with specific Yichudim which doesn’t seem to be discouraged at all. Then there’s Kemeyos, which seems to get a mixed response.

Yerushalmi, yeah I’m aware. The Arizal says that Reb Shlomo Molcho died because he used Sheimos. Also, Sefer Chasidim speaks against it, although he used it somewhat himself.

But the question is, what’s wrong?

Disclaimer: This is definitely not my most pressing issue of the day, but the conversations here were becoming monotonous.

What aren’t you getting? It’s not about feeling good. It is the best and most committed way of worshiping Hashem. Intrinsic value doesn’t mean getting reward. Intrinsic value means it is the best way. Now, of course you get much more S’char for doing ??? ?? ??? ???? ??? since you are actually serving Hashem better. But that is not a Stira. The point is not to do it for that sake. Your reason for training yourself to reach the level of doing it purely for Hashem might be for the reward. But having gotten to that level means that you no longer think about the reward, only about how grateful you are to be doing Hashem’s Mitzvos.

You don’t Daven to them to help you but you ask of them to Daven with you and for you and beseech Hakadosh Baruch Hu on your behalf.

As far as the place, the Meis has a connection to that spot. When you are there you can relate to him. Besides, even in Tefilla we see that location and direction make a difference.

You ask now why it is better that the focus is Hashem and not the reward? That part is obvious, and that’s where the Mashal comes in. That is the real Oved. About your original question why you should do it, granted that it is better, my response was that indeed working your way to that level can be with reward in mind.

Patur, the Tanna is simply saying not to work with the reward in mind. Of course, ??? ???? ??? ???? ???? ??????. You are doing the Mitzva anyhow, and you were originally motivated by reward. But while doing it don’t make the reward your focus.

You should strive to love Hashem and His Mitzvos to the extent that you’ll yearn to do them regardless of their reward. And yes, your motivation for making yourself this way will be for your benefit. But the level you will have arrived at will be about not considering reward.

Behaving nicely on the subway is also a Kiddush Hashem. I’m talking about the real thing, what Moshe Rabbeinu asked for.

Sam, do you think the Ribnitzer, for example, would go and show on TV how he does ????? ????? I know of such an incident from the brother of a Talmid of the one who went along. I don’t think it was Kabbalah but it still answers the question.

Lamed Vav, I don’t plan on using the Zohar Hakadosh for that and I don’t think it would help.

I read in an old Reader’s Digest about someone who saw a car moving slowly in the rain while he was hitchhiking. It looked like it slowed down for him so he got in. Once inside, he realized to his horror that there was actually no one inside. The car was moving on its own. This became more frightening when he noticed that he was approaching a turn. Suddenly, right before the turn a hand appeared and turned the wheel. This happened a few times.

As soon as he got into town he got out of that spooky, haunted car and ran far away. The next day, while sitting in a bar, two guys walk in. One tells the other, “Hey look. Here’s that fool who got into the car we were trying to push last night.”

When the ????? is with someone it doesn’t let him sin. So, unless the person went sour it can’t be that he fell upon such a sin.

The ???”? explains that since this was the only reason he didn’t sin it was counted as if he did. He gives an example of someone about to steal from you and since you don’t want him to be ???? the ??? of ????? you are ????? the object. Now, the only reason you were ????? the object was because of the impending ?????. Therefore it’s not as if it never took place. Had the case been that he tried to sneak in and steal but found everything locked, that would indeed be as if it never happened, since it never came to fruition. (Similar to the ???? of ????? ???? ????. )

PBA, although the Medrash says that it worked when R’ Shimon promised a child, not always is it in a Tzaddik’s hand. Not everyone gets helped by a miracle worker, and it is seldom that a Tzaddik promises something.

That is the challenge of a writer, to rightly convey nuance. With all that in mind you won’t type the way you speak.

A sentence is indeed a statement. But what you put in there, by careful choice, can make a big difference.

The next issue is that not everyone knows how to decipher plain English. So you might have to revert to smileys for a joke, winks for a wise-crack, capital for a complaint, and bold for attacks.

You have that right but it is you who has to exercise that right.

Remember that having them listen to you is about Chinuch and not convenience. A noticeable difference between the two is that when it is about Chinuch you are ready to jump up and approach the child, whereas if it is about convenience that would be a contradiction to the request.

A child realizes when the parent is asking from laziness or even tiredness. It is easy to take that for granted and ignore it. Then you ask where is the drink, he shrugs it off and you give up. Next time gets even harder.

So one answer to the question is, don’t be lazy. Don’t let it pass. Be ready to jump up and get it done or help, prod, encourage or demand what needs to get done.

The Gemara considers the body of a Yid to be ???? because of constant ???? of Mitzvos. Even when you aren’t actively thinking of doing a Mitzva you are subconsciously checking yourself constantly if you Davenned, if your eyes are in the right place. You aren’t at ease in the market place because you are on the alert for what is Kosher and what is not.

Preparing for ??? ??? is the same thing, only more so. Even if you already got the Minim, prepared the ??? ??? food, and built your ????, your mind is still not wandering on its own because you are subconsciously going through your ??? ??? checklist.

Yom Tov is a time when people have time to hang out. That is when the real Aveiros start happening. For this reason BaHab was set up, to fast for the Aveiros on Yom Tov.

Also, perhaps while being busy with Mitzvos, physically and mentally, that keeps you from forgetting about your Jewishness.

The format of your post makes it look like you are trying to build a case. Not sure what it is, though.

If the Chiyuv is Deoraysa then since we don’t go by Taamei Dikra we don’t change our decide Halachos based on the reason for them. In fact we assume that we never really know the while reason for a Mitzva in the Torah.

If it is Derabanan, or Asmachta, then we do pay attention to the reason. This is why by Derabanans we say Af Hen Hayu Be’oso Haness. That is why woman are Mechuyav in Megilla and the Arba Kosos.

This is a Talmid’s attempt to be Meyashiv a Rebbi’s Chakira, which is why I prefaced it with, “I would say.” The Ksav Sofer probably understand these reasons to be the complete reason, which means that he understands it to be Derabanan.

147, that’s pretty cool to make your own Hekeshim. I don’t think I’m up to that. In fact it says about those Mitzvos that they were said at the same time. Was this too?

Oomis, since they are Mechuyav to fast they obviously must eat, but the question here is about the specific mitzva of eating which is different from the need to eat Erev Tisha B’av. This is a Mitzva which happens to coincide with the need.

I would say that if it is an Asmachta that would be reason tip apply to Nashim as well. Derabanans don’t necessarily have the exemption of Zman Grama, at least not when the reasoning applies to Nashim as well.

Sam, I know you have it in for the Arizal, but this time, although he agreed to it, the Minhag of using a white one is from the Maharil. As to the issue of this resembling the Gemara’s case of Darkei Emori, I’m sure you are aware of the answers given. Some say to take the white one without specifically asking for it, since the Gemara only mentioned asking for it.

This might sounds like a poor excuse but the same answer is given to explain the Sefer Chasidim in the topic of Tarnegol Shakara Ketarnegoles. The Chida, I think, explains Eshta Ve’osir this way, too. The Gemara is actually Meduyak this way, since it switches from one who does this or that to one who says this or that.

Besides for this, I personally don’t get the big deal. You aren’t asking for a white chicken for some mysterious reason. You want a white one just for a Remez.

And to answer the big Pliah on the Chareidim, we are Makpid on not trying to be smarter than our Rabbeim.

The Tur quotes Rav Natrunai Gaon’s responsa, so it is not just Rishonim mentioning a Minhag of the Geonim; it is in writing from the Geonim. Rashi too was quoting what he saw from the Geonim.

Now, this actually is explaining what the Gemara means by Purpisa. He says that he saw from the Geonim that they did Zeh Tachas Zeh with plants. This should serve as an example of a Minhag that the Amoraim had but was not explicitly recorded. They referenced to it as an example of a question in Hilchos Shabbos, by chance. So perhaps the question itself, what is the Mekor, is refuted by this very topic.

The old if-it’s-true-why-don’t-we-all argument is not really strong logic. The usual answer is that everyone it’s waiting for everyone to agree.

Many remedies are alternative before they become mainstream. Fish oil was suggested by naturalists long before becoming mainstream.

If we hold that by a Sakana we make a Yom Chol, then Rav Papa has no proof from the Mishna. The reason we do this Refuah is because we are already doing Refuos.

If we assume there is another reason for Metzitza then what Rav Papa is saying is that since this part is even done on Shabbos it must also be because of Sakanah. This is why he didn’t mention the other stuff.

It seems like in the times of the Amora’im they must have already had issues with Metzitza.

There’s plenty of room to be original before leaving a society, which in turn puts you in the box of like minded individuals. I know plenty of people who in their quest to find originality are exactly like the rest of them.

I am not made out of my hat. My clothing (for the first couple of months) look like those of my friends, but I don’t think people confuse me for someone else.

You can be original but if your goal is simply originality that is hardly original.
