Well i know many who who dont and they seem to be sold that this minhag is written in stone.
What i dont get is how parents can say to thier children not to join them because the family minhag is not to mish and i know the other way too where children dont eat by there parents for the same reason, even though they did eat by there parents before marriage. Its mind boggling.

I m find g an interesting pattern here. I know many many people who consider themselves talmidim or followers of rabbi miller.
What i find interesting though is that before they boasted of being a follower of rabbi miller they were very T’mimisdig and would hardly judge people and never assume the worst n others. But once they became followers of rabbi miller all that changed. Im not saying this applies to all followers of rabbi miller but just look around and its just so obvious. Just my observation and my 2¢

    Dass yachid:
No, I don’t think a timer being built into the appliance would make it muttar according to R’ Moshe. If you programmed a built in timer to turn on the a/c at 11pm Friday night, for example, the a/c’s operation is beginning at 11pm.

If, however, you turn on the a/c before Shabbos, and the compressor happens to cycle on at 11pm, that is considered a result of what you did on erev Shabbos.
    —————————–
Based on what you wrote i have a hypothetical question:
Suppose i have a ac running all week long . Goes on at different intervals throughout the day/ night via a 24 hour timer. According to reb moshe would i need to disconnect it before shabbos or can i let it run through out the entire week including shabbos.

A thermostat can be triggered by your actions.

That should not make a difference here.

No, the difference is as stated above, a thermostat is part of the normal function of the appliance, which was turned on before Shabbos. A timer is the appliance being turned on on Shabbos

Are u saying this as accepted in halachach or is this your personal sevara?

The generally accepted halachah is to permit Shabbos clocks; I am saying what I think is a simple distinction which even R’ Moshe, who assers Shabbos clocks, would agree with.

It’s clear that R’ Moshe didn’t have a problem with having a refrigerator on on Shabbos. If the normal cycling on and off of an appliance were the same as a timer, he would not have allowed it, as the compressor cycles on and off.

You can call it my sevara if you wish, but I think it’s a simple and clear distinction, and not really a chiddush.
    ——————-
My question wasnt whether reb moshe held that a refrigerator was or wasnt a problem. We all k ow that he was ok with it. My question was : what is the difference between a thermostat and a timer. Both are going on and off at different intervals. Both can be mechanical or electronic. The fact that one maybe manufactured with it should not make a difference.can anyone explain why a t-stat is different in halacha then a timer.

Good question, but I think the appliances cycling on and off is considered part of the running of the appliance, which started before Shabbos, but when a timer activates, it’s viewed as the appliance being turned on on Shabbos.

Why is a timer different then a thermostat in a fridge, oven,ac,heating, hot plate, crock pot. Both dont have thier own minds yet we are only concerned with only a timer, even though both are going off and on at different intervals.

Rav Binyamin [Yehoshua] Zilber, however, argues at length that women driving entails no violation whatsoever of the norms of modesty:

“on the contrary, she locks herself up in a box called ‘automobile’, and we thus avoid [the problems of] walking behind a woman and passing between women, and of gazing”
In the same vein, he rejects as nonsensical the claim that women driving will increase the frequency of their appearance in public:

“I do not know what he is talking about – we see that the street is brimming full of women, virtually ninety percent [of people in the street] are women, and by traveling in cars [this percentage] is not increased, but just the opposite, since something that takes her about half an hour to do by foot she can do by car in a few minutes.”

The reason is that Reb Moshe allows cholov stam because the government watches out for mixing milk from a non-kosher animal so there is mirthas, fear involved. The question they put up is if the chachomim forbid milk from a non-jew with a count or we are doing it from custom which makes the prohibition biblical because of a neder. Certainly if someone can get cholov yisroel then he should rather get it.
    ————————-
Thats all on the assumption that pricing and quality are equal or close to equal
..but everyone knows that milk and many dairy products spoil way before its expiration date and everyone knows that they are way more costly especially cheese and cheese products and everyone knows that heimishe products are made way more inferior in quality in general.

Im curious to k now why when it comes to girl schools who have a school uniform the gorls are required to wear those uniform only during schools hours. Once off school premises they are no longer required to wear those uniform. However by bochrim, if they are caught wearing any color shirt when they are away from yeshiva , they get called into the rosh yeshivas office for a nice shmooze. No im not talking when playing sports or bain hazmanim.
