“30 year ago this was normal.”

Ha! 30 years ago this August I went out with the young lady who became my wife. She lived in Flatbush. We went out, on our first date, to Bernstein’s. (I didn’t live in NY, and that was the only place I knew.) It was a Monday night, so the place was empty. Afterwards we went over to South Street Seaport and sat and talked until some early hour of the morning. We were married the following June, and still B”H married 29+ years.

The moral of the story: there’s nothing wrong with going to a restaurant on the first date.

“The Brisker R”Y said circumstances imposed by the Israeli government upon Bnei Torah living in Eretz Yisroel may compel us to move out to chutz l’aaretz to continue our Torah life.”

That would be impossible, as other civilized countries do not put up with rioting in the streets the way the Israeli government does.

“We once had an adom gadol for a sukkos yom tov meal, we had a bar-b-q going on a low flame, so we served hamburgers, hot dogs and bar-b-q wings. The adom gadol complained that it is not yom tov’dik.”

An adom gadol should have enough common sense not to complain about the food at a meal to which he was invited. And by the way, our minhag for last day of Pesach is to BBQ for the day seuda. We had hot dogs, hamburgers, wings, and kebobs. A nice time was had by all, and nobody complained that the food was not fit for a meal on chag.

A meshuloch wandered into shule this morning 10 minutes after the last minyan ended. He still got up on the bima and made a speech to the 3 people left in the shule.

“How many pounds/kilos of handmade shmura matzos does everyone here buy for their family to cover the eight-day Yom Tov?”

We buy 1 kilo for the 7 day chag. I’m the only one that eats it after the first day, and I have no problems finishing all that by myself. I love hand-made shmura matza.

Funny thing is, at Osher Ad the big plastic bottles of Kedem are cheaper than the Israeli grape juice, so that is what we use. And I did ask our LOR about this tonight, and he told me the Kedem (regular, I didn’t ask about the lite version) is fine for use all year round, including for the Seder.

“Im confused why people proudly announce they have no filter. No Rabbanim condone that.”

For all the “chareidim” here who claim to follow this or that Rebbe, shlit”a, or this or that Rosh Yeshiva, shlit”a – none of their Rebbiem would allow their followers to be on this website, let alone be on the internet for non-parnassa reasons. So all the people on the internet, even with filters, well, that defeats the whole reason of “following a Rebbe” to begin with.

“. . . 5T may seem OOT but it really has it all from the perspective of a frum couple or family seeking to relocate but stay close to real world . . .”

You’re living in a fantasy world, my friend. The “real world,” such as it is, is not anywhere on the western side of the Atlantic. Your 5T is certainly OOT, as is Monsey, Williamsburg, Boro Park, Flatbush, Lakewood, and the list goes on and on.

It’s sad that the “frum couple or family” you mention so often treats E”Y as a spiritual Disneyland, but never gives a thought to what Hashem has written in his Torah over and over again. It’s amazing to me that I can visit the U.S. and see people read the words “וקבצנו מארבע כנפות הארץ לארצנו “, yet it apparently makes no impact.

    True story:
Many years ago, I davened regularly in a largish shule. My makom was in the front. In the row in front of me were several talkers, who happened to be machers in the shule. On one Shabbat, they were talking particularly loudly. I turned around (so I was not facing them), and shushed them quietly. One of the men took exception to this, and berated me right then and there.

I changed seats the next Shabbat, and I never did move back to that spot.

Right before Rosh Hashana that year, he came up to me, apologized, and asked mechila for embarrassing me the way he did. He said he realized that he was wrong, and that he had been working on not talking during davening. He even invited me to move back to the original seat. Of course, I forgave him, but I didn’t move back to the old seat.

And by the way, to 1: There is a conservative shule down the street from where I daven in the mornings – they have well attended minyanim 3 times a day, every day. So yes, many go only 3 times a year, but there are some who go 3 times a day.

I wanted to update my post “upthread” concerning the no longer published Minchas Yerushalayim siddur.

One of my daughters was looking through my old Coffee Room posts, and saw what I had written about this particular siddur. She took it upon herself to ask on a few Yerushalayim based Facebook groups if anyone had this siddur to sell or give away. One woman did; all my kids chipped in and had it rebound, and gave it to me as a birthday present. I was (and still am) ecstatic!

(BTW, as it turns out, I knew the woman who gave the siddur to my daughter!)

    I am trolling.

We actually have two girls from Darchei Binah coming for Shabbat next week – but one of them is the daughter of close friends from Baltimore, and we’ve known her since she was a little kid. In fact, my kids used to babysit for her and her siblings. The rest of it was just, you know, trolling.

She’s not nebby. Her mom tells us that the daughter doesn’t own any Gap sweatshirts.

We’re very much looking forward to having her and her friend for Shabbat.

    Relax, everyone. We’re good.
