    Why aren’t pets raffle prizes?

Because having a pet is a serious responsibility to the animal. A dog needs to be trained, which takes time and effort that not everyone is willing to make. It’s an expense – there’s food, veterinarian visits and bills. It’s not like the dog gets sick and you can ignore it. One needs to plan about caring for the dog when leaving the house or going on vacation, which is not cheap. The dog needs to be walked and exercised, every day, including Shabbat and the chagim. Is someone going to leave shule on Y”K to go home and walk the dog? You can’t leave it outside 24/7. Think of it as having a permanant 5 year old in the house for 12 or 15 years.

That’s why pets are not raffle prizes.

Frum could also be completely external, and chareidi could be one’s relationship with HKB”H. If you friend doesn’t agree, he’s a bigot.

I think the quote is better in the original version. And, just to be truthful, the friend is a she – not a he, and she’s not a bigot.

Defining “Hareidi” is almost impossible (based on clothings or hairstyle?, how one votes?, if one is for or against the Medinah? etc.).

“Frum is the relationship one has with God. Chareidi is how you present yourself to the rest of the world.” Quoted from a friend of mine.

Is it really fair to crowdsource for people to do your homework? Does your teacher know you’re doing this? Is asking people to help you part of the assignment?

    do you wear a hat

Whom are you asking? If you’re asking me, the answer is no, I do not wear a hat for davening. Few people on my yishuv do. (For the record, I do not wear a suit, sport coat, or tie, either.)

hoes are not either required; why don’t people wear sandals instead?

I know people here who wear sandalim year-round. I wear my sandals from March or April to November, sometimes December. Yes, even on Shabbat and Chagim.

I think a nice red tartan pattern with a pom-pom on top would make a nice addition to any man’s hat collection.

My youngest wears one green outfit every other Shabbat – Friday night and Shabbat day. She even goes to shule in that same green outfit, and has, on occasion, gone out for meals dressed that way. (Why green? She closes Shabbat every other week, so she’s on base.)

If the school has a one outfit rule for a shabbaton, I’m sure the young ladies can manage for one week. It’s not the end of the world; after all, it’s not like you’re going on a date.

New York should become the safe-haven for French Jewry.

There’s no mitzvah to live in NY. There is a mitzvah to live in E”Y.

If I’d have bought a ticket, it would have been in Maryland, where one is allowed to claim lottery prizes anonymously. That would have been a great start. Then, of course, you need to gather a team – attorneys, financial advisers, CPA . . . and a second team on the Israeli side. Once that’s all done, the (anonymous) donations start, especially to local tzedakas . . . the yeshivat hesder, various funds for the elderly, the schools my kids attended, my yeshiva . . . I guess the list is endless.

And RebYidd23, why do you need a dog food company to make kosher dog food? Dogs don’t need to eat kosher food.

If someone frum wants to move somewhere grassy and inexpensive or open a Shul or Yeshiva in a suburb, should they perhaps make Aliya?

They should make aliyah because it’s a mitzvah di’oreita.

To scared driver delight and Little Froggie:

I’m not sure why you think the title and question are offensive. We have a d’var halacha every morning after davening; one morning last week, the Rav was quoting the M”B on the differences between the two types. I didn’t get a chance to ask my question afterwards. It’s a legitimate question.

Let’s not worry. Moshiach is nearly here and then everyone will become charedi, even the MOs.

Doubtful that we will all become chareidi – we will all live according to halacha, not according to chumra.

never play battleship against me, who ever heard of boats not moving when shot at?

Years ago, when my youngest was, well, young, she played Battleship with a friend of ours who came for a Shabbat meal. At some point, he said that her ship setup was impossible, because he had no more places to try. It turned out that she had been moving her ships around throughout the game.

She’s now 19, and we still remind her about that from time to time.
