I broke into their “big brother” satellite. It works like the Marauder’s Map. Want his itinerary?

And by the way – I wouldn’t wear that tie with that shirt.

The way it was explained/taught to me is that if Hashem wants you to have something, you put in hishtadlus to actualize your bakasha, and at the same time you understand that it is Hashem’s doing and not yours that decides.

It isn’t about “upsetting” G-d by doing His job, it is a matter of thinking that it really is in your hands after all and more hishtadlus would make it a better chance.

When you say you want to achieve your objective, the question is, do you really want to achieve YOUR objective, or do you want what Hashem believes is good for you? Should He give you things because you asked, or do only that which is best?

Hishtadlus, as I understand it, is about putting forth the effort to show yourself and Hashem that you are not expecting open miracles (something for nothing), but putting in repeated efforts may just be a show of thinking the efforts are the source. When the Rabbi said that you ‘could if you want’, I think he was assessing where you were at (as you asked) and assumed that if you did not put in more effort/hishtadlus, you may worry, ultimately, that a negative outcome was due to lack of effort and he was sparing you that anxiety.

I know it is hard to squish such a ‘big’ subject into a small space so I may not have been too clear, but I figured I would make my hishtadlus and hopefully Hashem will make it understood 🙂

It isn’t always a response to bad behavior. I just heard R’ Schechter say that it could be a hachana. The impetus for chessed and tefillos to guard us from future happenings (that we hopefully lived up to). He obviously supported it well and said it better than I could, but I thought it was nice to hear a more positive thought.

Health – you have got to be kidding. Health problems that would make them legally liable? This isn’t about health issues. This is about people emptying their closets and storage bins into a truck and calling it helpful.

For the last month I have been so impressed with how beautifully you have controlled your comments towards others and decreased your angry hurtful comments. I hope it is something you will again consider.

btw – New Jersey isn’t as far from NY as it may seem.

    mammaleh – thanks

Poster, you are correct that if they have an abundance they should only take the new stuff. I work in a gmach that is VERY selective because they are fortunate enough to have the selection. What made some of us feel bad was not that they didn’t need our stuff, it was that we were given the impression that even though they have NOTHING, they are still being picky. Knowing they are turning it down due to an overflow is awesome and not an issue for me at all.

“I have a feeling that most people here don’t care to read a thread like this, so I really appreciate it when people do.”

    Well that’s not very Avraham like ;}

I think lots of people here read these threads but they don’t require a response so you don’t get the zchus of knowing about it. I appreciate the different perspective, it is always amazing to me to hear something new on a story that I thought I knew so well. And if you came up with that yourself then Kol HaKavod.

WIY – I agree with you when you are giving to someone who had money and lost it. I think it is different when people are in crisis, homeless and have no possessions to their name. That is not a time to be selective, it is a time to make sure they are warm and clean. When the urgency is gone we can go back to catering to each ones needs in particular. Unless people a) aren’t quite as desperate as we’ve been told, or b) they have been fortunate enough to get so much clothing that they can afford pick and chose.

(I am obviously still referring to used but very respectable)

As far as what I would want for myself, in this type of emergency situation I can hardly imagine myself worrying about whether or not something was worn before.

daniela – I’m not sure what point you are trying to make. If you are forcing yourself to keep silent, and you are sure, somehow, that other anonymous posters are too, than why bother reading. I too chose to skip threads that bother me so. But I do not agree with you. And I wouldn’t assume that many others do either. I don’t know what the “truth” is, but I don’t know why you insist it is your job to push for it. As a mom of many teens I have found WOW’s parenting to be different than mine but it isn’t suspicious. On the other hand, I have found your comments to be very well intended but they strike me strongly as coming from someone who does not have children, regardless of whether or not you do. Perhaps the facts don’t add up because they are coming from a different viewpoint, and not because they are missing truth? Either way, I am sorry for answering back, I have been restraining myself because it is a mitzvah to be silent when our words of truth will not be well received, but instead of trying to help, you sound (to me, at least) as if you are angry that your opinions are not being regarded and I worry that your tone is hurtful. If that is incorrect than I am sorry.

I agree that the ability to go on some level of vacation, to have cleaning help and to have the potential to eat out are pretty necessary. I don’t think those are luxuries.

If that’s where you are holding then I pray Hashem always bentches you with such.

Aries – well said and beautifully articulated. I am surprised, however, that you give her credit for being right when so much of her information was off. Well intended, I am sure, but only at first.

WOW – I give you a lot of credit for being able to answer everyones posts, deserving or not. My skin is not always so thick. Keep up the good work and Hashem should continue to give you strength.

Aries – and thank you, by the way, for the help you have given to me as well.

Oh gosh, jmh, I read it so differently. I thought of it as a mighty tree who was withering inside (perhaps from pain and stress) but all looked at her/him as a mighty tree until death overtook her/him and people found out how empty she/he was inside and how they missed the chance to help because they were disillusioned by the externality.

(Darn, I think I just gave myself away)
