Yes, it is. Our train system is pretty simplistic, which makes it easy to use but you can’t get to too many places. Subways are intimidating if you aren’t used to them and don’t really know where you are going. I was also nervous about her standing on streets at night alone with lots of luggage. Either way, we’ll still be happy to pick you up! We can even drive you through a DD on the way 🙂

And you missed the point of hashgacha. When DD ran out of oil on a saturday night they went to a neighboring franchise for replacement oil and paid them back when they got their next shipment. When they got their hechsher they were stuck and called the rabbi to say they ran out of oil. The Rabbi was able to get them the oil they needed from another kosher place. Yes, the mixes are all kosher, but nobody franchised the cooking oil. (and that’s just what I know second hand from the mashgiachs wife, I am sure there are other issues as well).

Well, as it ended up we are too out-of-town to take a subway without very specific instructions and there was too much luggage. She took the shuttle crdle mentioned that went from JFK to grand central station to Newark. It was $24 and she paid in advance. Down side is that she had to walk a block at grand central to wait for the next shuttle and with the non-direct flight she took this morning she probably could have driven in less time.

Thanks so much to all for your replies.

And btw, if anyone comes to Chicago, we would be happy to pick you up from the airport.

I would be surprised if there was a diary out there that hadn’t been read by the wrong person somewhere down the years. And chances are, if the person knows you, they may know people you have written about. I would use pseudonyms.

No restraint, always thought of it as not tznius. I always felt like it was like standing up in front of a mixed crowd and speaking. Most of my comments on other’s threads are just comments and not noticed much. I even noticed that there were much much fewer threads started by females even though (at the time I was checking on it) many of the posters were female. Either way, it was to make a point . . .

SJSinNYC – Real yeshivish people don’t post here. It’s mostly impersonators out to make them look bad. And doing well, I must say, but the opposition doesn’t come out too impressive either. I used to go nuts, now I try to pity them and move on.

Been choosing my real life friends more selectively too and life has certainly improved.

You have got to be kidding! First of all, I know that I, for one, said hi to you every time you posted. So if you are calling me no one – ouch.

Secondly, what are you talking about? Your birthday thread was answered by many people. And whoever the important people are that you consider someone, well many of them aren’t on anymore so they can’t be faulted for not rolling out the red carpet.

I’m trying not to get angry when hurt, I’m trying to do everything I do with more intent/kavana and purpose. Also Tehillim. And posting this, even though I feel uncomfortable doing so, is in the hope of giving chizuk to others to do something too, which is also a zchus for the klal.

dolphina (and zdad) – Once again I agree with you that many posters have given good support to your distate for them and their way of life. It just hurts me that you aren’t able to see how similar your attitude is to theirs. When someone posts that there are government programs, the first response from those who are anti-chareidi (or whatever) is the assumption that they are loafing, fixing books and dishonest. I am not trying to argue with you, there are so many idiots out there doing just what you discribe but why is your assumption about them any more “halachically appropriate” then their assumptions.

Please don’t lower yourself to that and please don’t be so accusing and hurtful to those of us who have chosen to live a chareidi-ish life but are NOT doing any of the things you speak of.

Some of us are working very hard and raising our kids with the minimum and have accepted government hep during those years that we couldn’t manage on our own. Getting a $1000 raise meant losing $10,000 in benefits and now not making ends meet at all. Do I fix the books to continue getting the benefits? No. Do I chose to take lower pay so I can party on all those extras the governemnt gives me? No. I turned down a better (much better) paying job because I didn’t want my kids waking themselves up in the morning and putting them selves on a bus. I took a lower paying job so I can be home with them in the summer since we can’t afford to send them to camp and I don’t want them home alone. I took a lower paying job so that I could pick them up after school instead of sending them on a bus to an empty house. Do I owe you any explanations? No, but you have embarrassed me even more than the government applications do and I needed to defend myself to get a shred of my dignity back.

You think that everyone in a black hat acts like that? Maybe it’s time to realize that there are other communities and cities out there (WOW – really?) where those types of behaviors aren’t rampant, or aren’t even the norm.

I am not denying the validity of your claims against SOME people who should know better, but PLEASE don’t stoop to their level by assuming everyone in THEIR mode of dress is doing the same garbage either.

    (thanks for listening)

dolphina – you are correct. Not sure why you assume the worst right away though. His words were:

    Every Jew who is eligible

that would rule out those who aren’t. Even if they fix their books to make it look like they are.
