I’ll compete in the Challa baking.
http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/challa-baking-help
Who’s joining me? I’m telling you all now that I’m going for the gold…
streekgeekParticipant….like a glowstick. Sometimes you have to break before you can shine.
streekgeekParticipantGamanit – Thanks! That actually does make sense. Now the question is if non-chassidim have the same pure intentions in mind when holding hands after the chuppah…
streekgeekParticipantJF02 – It’s hard to understand cuz all I’m doing is just rationalizing things I shouldn’t be doing so I could do it…but I’ll try to explain a bit. My understanding of why music is so powerful is because it is more than just something you’re listening to. It’s a lot deeper than that. The thoughts a singer entertains while singing his/her songs are absorbed in the music and thereby filters down to you, the listener, both for good and for bad. If one singer is a lot more moral than a different singer, the same song that they both sing could have a different impact on the listener.
February 4, 2014 5:11 pm at 5:11 pm in reply to: Two sixteen-year old girls in critical condition! #1049469streekgeekParticipantSorry didn’t update in a while but as of last week Shulamis bas Sara has woken up, been taken off the respirator, and has been transferred out of the ICU B”H. Please continue to daven for a complete recovery.
I am unaware of what is going on with Sora Tziporah bas Miriam Rivka.
Please also daven for Brocha Chana bas Tzipora, a 12 year old girl my younger sister knows very well, who was hit by a car.
streekgeekParticipantI believe it’s the same reason why good people have bad things happen to them; to wake them up and give them a chance to change. So when they’re down there they won’t have any taanos on why they are there.
streekgeekParticipantTAOM – Please stop putting yourself down like that! Don’t dwell on how you could have been a better person, rather look forward to becoming the person you know you can be. Try changing your mindset just a little. As they say, hindsight vision is 20/20 – you can see exactly how you could have acted differently and then you dwell on it so much you can’t move forward…I know the feeling, been there too many times.
If you feel you didn’t get closer to Hashem at all since Chanuka, be thankful that at least you’re not further away from Him (I’m assuming that because of why you said you weren’t here in 2 weeks) and work on getting closer NOW! Try taking on a small kabbala that is meaningful to you, that will make you feel connected. Even something so small can make the difference. Personally, there is one non-jewish song that I really love. Being that I stopped listening to that type of music approximately 2 years ago, I was able to get around it by getting my friend to professionally record it for me so I could listen to it. (My belief is that a non-jewish song sung by a Jewish singer is not as bad as the original because of the improper thoughts that are absent when a Jewish singer sings that same song…) Anyways, I recently felt inspired enough to take the song off of my “favorites” playlist, which I have playing on repeat most of the day, and a few days later I was able to fully delete it from my phone. Some might say, oh please, that’s just one song…what about all the others you still listen to? My look at it is that there is now one less song that I listen to and that is a step in the right direction no matter how small it is.
TAOM – Listen, I really don’t know you, but look at how far you have come since last year. So if the last 2 months weren’t the greatest, make the next to the best that it could be! You know you have it in you!
streekgeekParticipantProbably the same source as where the mitzva tantz comes from…
streekgeekParticipantSeriously? Is there a source for that anywhere? That’s probably the most interesting thing I’ve ever heard about Chassidim.
streekgeekParticipantBeing affectionate in public is wrong. This obviously includes public handholding.
What about on your wedding night? I’ve noticed plenty of newlyweds holding hands and no one gives a hoot. Why is it any different?
streekgeekParticipantThat’s exactly what I needed!! Thanks so much 🙂
streekgeekParticipant“Best friends are hard to find cuz the very best one is mine.”
streekgeekParticipantJust letting y’all know. Just finished a batch of challas and they came out gorgeous!! Too bad I can’t post a picture, you’d all be so proud 😉
So what I was very on top of the rising situation, cut the time on that down a bit. I didn’t flour the table like I usually do, and I used oil instead like Gamanit suggested.
So I really thank you all! As does my family and guests!
Shabbat Shalom!
streekgeekParticipantLittle Froggie: You should really thank HaShem for that, in a special way.
Exactly what I’m doing over here:
http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/emulating-hashems-middos#post-506237
streekgeekParticipantWell, glad you clicked now 🙂
And still in NotePad? Sheesh, its the 21st century y’know…
streekgeekParticipantHaleivi – Lol. I actually thought of that, but than would totally compromise my anonymity. If anyone knows where a cute little froggie keychain could be found I would appreciate that 😉
streekgeekParticipantyytz – I actually have a book by him (Garden of Emuna) but have not been able to bring myself to start it yet…maybe nows a good time 😉 Thanks!
Little Froggie – I like this side of you too. Have you been running on lack of sleep, cuz I know for myself that that’s when I usually have my deepest side showing. I’ve been wanting to tell you, remember this exchange we had HERE. Well because of THIS escapade I got a new car and I designated it as a lashon nekiya zone. So that’s all in your merit! Thank you!!!
January 7, 2014 5:32 pm at 5:32 pm in reply to: Two sixteen-year old girls in critical condition! #1049467streekgeekParticipantShulmis bas Sara is still in serious condition. There hasn’t really been much response from her at all. Both had their facial bones crushed really bad, so recovery in this area will take a while. The girl’s family that I know has requested privacy so I don’t really have anything substantial to add. There was an asifa in Lakewood last night for the two of them. Keep davening!!!! And if I hear any good news I’ll definitely let you all know.
streekgeekParticipantThanks!
That is the purpose of midda k’neged midda – for a person to be able to take note and correct himself.
If that’s the case, why would Hashem use this method of punishment in our days? Who can possibly figure out (besides for those few holy people) why they were punished? Who can possibly judge and decide that?
streekgeekParticipantI am definetly going to play this song to the girls in pain that I am working with.
TAOM – Glad to see you’re on the giving end here 😉
streekgeekParticipantHaleivi – I don’t think learning a sefer with him a would be too practical as he’s pretty opposed learning when not in a yeshiva setting. What I did with him yesterday was we watched one of R’ Mizrachi’s lectures on how modern day science proves that the Torah is divine. It was pretty fascinating except for the fact that I had to keep pausing it to explain various ideas to him that he couldn’t understand, say mathematical stuff. But do you think it makes sense to go deeper at this point – like why all other religions are false? Proof of the oral torah? I’m just not sure how far to take this.
streekgeekParticipantT613 – Oh please!
December 30, 2013 8:37 pm at 8:37 pm in reply to: When people tell you unfunny jokes (especially with enthusiasm) #1003104streekgeekParticipantLF – Ask the mods! They know!!!!
December 30, 2013 8:36 pm at 8:36 pm in reply to: Two sixteen-year old girls in critical condition! #1049461streekgeekParticipantUPDATE: B”H they are both out of sakana now, and bechasdei Hashem there are no signs brain damage. However, there are many broken bones and they are being sedated for the pain.
Please continue to be mispallel! I know one of these girls personally!!!
streekgeekParticipantHaleivi – I hear what you’re saying and it’s a bit hard to explain so I’ll just say it straight out. I have a younger brother who is a carbon copy of me. To the tee, literally. So I know that when I was at his age (10-11) I started having big questions and they weren’t addressed properly. So yesterday I took the time to actually have a nice long conversation with him about certain emuna topics and as scary as it is he has the same thought processes as I did. Thing is he’s doing exceptionally well in school but I’m scared for what will be in a few years from now. But on the other hand, my parents work so hard to shelter my siblings, which is usually okay and not a problem. But this particular brother will not turn out fine if he continues the way he’s going. Should I start learning with him and exposing him to things he may or may not have heard of yet?
streekgeekParticipantWIY – Pretty much. I’m one of those who can spew out random facts and complete a NY Times crossword puzzle but won’t recognize someone I spent my summer with two years ago…
streekgeekParticipantyou should make a song either about shidduchim or seminaries.
Or put them together in one, now THAT will be funny.
Nice thread idea WIY
streekgeekParticipantWIY – Absolutely nothing. If I did think there was something wrong my username would look a lot different. I just feel that I usually don’t let my geeky side show through a lot over here while in real life I get called geek so many times a day it’s quite humorous.
December 30, 2013 4:11 pm at 4:11 pm in reply to: Two sixteen-year old girls in critical condition! #1049460streekgeekParticipantPlease please continue davening for these 2 girls! They are in desperate need of tefillos.
streekgeekParticipantOMG I sound like such a geek.
streekgeekParticipantSam2 – That is so interesting. I’ve read up on this a bit and it seems that over time the meaning of nauseous changed due to people’s misuse of it. Now this is evolution in progress. Cool!
streekgeekParticipantHome is where the heart is. It’s as simple as that!
streekgeekParticipantBTW I appreciate all your responses. Pray for me that the challa tastes as good as it smells, and not as bad as it looks!
Have a great Shabbos all!
December 27, 2013 5:45 pm at 5:45 pm in reply to: How to ask a rebellious teen to do something without getting resistance #997091streekgeekParticipantLet him/her learn it the hard way.
streekgeekParticipantGamanit – interesting idea. I could definitely give that a shot. Thanks!
streekgeekParticipantoomis – Thanks! I’ll try that as well.
I really can’t switch recipes cuz my family would never let – I use my mother’s recipe that she’s been using for ages…but for some reason it just doesn’t come out the same way.
streekgeekParticipantT613 – Thanks! I’ll archive that name for future reference.
So I’ll try cutting down on the rising time while making sure it has risen enough. That’s a real fine line I’m dealing with. How long do you let a dough rise that uses dry yeast (I think, the type that come in a bag and looks like granulated brown sugar)?
streekgeekParticipantPBA – Will do. Thanks for the lead!
streekgeekParticipantI can finally post on this thread!
Cappuccino chip cookie brittle – fastest way to get something out on the table in 30 minutes flat. And that’s including the 25 minutes it takes in the oven. I would post the recipe from memory but I don’t want to be held accountable if I left out something…
And of course, my challa fiasco last night 🙂
streekgeekParticipantSo more oil and less flour? I’m already in denial of how much oil is in that recipe already…
streekgeekParticipantPBA – Seriously? There’s someone who does that? That’s really special cuz there are some people who seriously need help with challa baking. Like me. She does it as a chessed or does she charge for her advice?
streekgeekParticipantAnyone going this year?
If they’re going I’d assume they’d be there already and not posting here.
streekgeekParticipantTsk tsk…naughty naughty!!
So Shopping, what are you doing with all your free time now?
streekgeekParticipantSyag – Why flour?
streekgeekParticipantTruth is, the dough actually rose for a lot longer than I intended cuz I had to run out somewhere… Oh well! There’s always a second chance to get it right (and a third, and a fourth…)
streekgeekParticipantIsn’t there like some expert challah lady you can call for advice?
Sure there is, you tell me. Which one of your wives?
streekgeekParticipantGoq – lol! Being invisible means people can’t see you. Not that they can’t bump in to you. The fatter you get the more likely it is that people will find out that there’s an invisible person…
I’d probably hop aboard a rocket and orbit around space a bit. I’d also like to sit in on some people’s conversations – such as interesting political ones that are closed to the media, and my friends’ dates. And I would also like the opportunity to hop on to a plane and go anywhere I want in the whole wide world without having to go through security. And I won’t have to pay for my flight 😉
streekgeekParticipantSeriously? I’m a bit nervous about tinkering with recipes as I’m pretty new to the whole kitchen scene but I’ll try that out next week.
Thanks!
streekgeekParticipantSyag – What you’re saying is true, but I was actually referring to a specific case that I know. This was seriously the intent. You’re not good enough for any of us.
streekgeekParticipantYup, they ask at bar/bas mitzva age. I believe it’s a whole ritual in beis din. I know someone who went through that too.
And forget about kicking out of schools, how about the kids who don’t even get in to school because the hanhala believes it’s pointless cuz anyways s/he will be kicked out in a few weeks??? Oh, so they’re giving off the message that the streets are a better place for people like you. Much better.
