Nah, that’s not it. I’ve had a bit more than enough Northern Ireland in my lifetime.
squeakParticipantyossiea, tell me yourself, do they? I know both Rabbonim that you mention personally. Very personally. And here’s what’s wrong with your argument.
Would you describe R’ Herschel Shachter as Modern Orthodox? I would not. His children are also not. The fact that he belongs to YU and is a Torahdig person does not allow Modern Orthodoxy to ride on his coattails and show off their split hooves. Ditto for R’ Willig himself.
If you are sitting at a shabbos table with single boys and girls or mishing at a singles kiddush and think that you’re OK because R’ Shachter and R’ Willig don’t compromise on halacha, well, you should think again. You are OK only if YOU are OK. And Modern Orthodoxy compromises on Halacha. I doubt that either Rov you mentioned will pull you out of gehinnom by your peyos.
squeakParticipantTo HaskalaYid, re: What did joseph mean:
A certain Rov was once approached by a group of his ba’alei battim. They were bothered by a certain psak that R’ Moshe Feinstein made, and they explained how it affected them personally. They requested that the Rav explain to R’ Moshe why his psak was a source of difficulty and that he should try to be more meikil. The Rav’s response was simple:
“You, are asking me, to tell the Godol Hador, what to do? That is not how it works. The Godol Hador, will tell me, and I, will tell the ba’alei battim, what to do.” (extra commas added for emphasis; you had to hear it)
P.S. If you don’t want someone to go on the defensive because of your screen name, why don’t you change it.
squeakParticipantItzik – from your post I am COL (as opposed to LOL).
December 29, 2008 11:04 pm at 11:04 pm in reply to: Should There be Vacation During Chanukah? #628546squeakParticipantReally, now that children are not needed at home for the harvest and gather seasons, and we have air-conditioning in the classrooms, there is no reason for children to have off from school at all. We used to go to school even on Shabbos (no pens, pencils, etc. Just learning). Good luck.
squeakParticipantShould Wolfish Musings be given a blog? Is he capable of using the technology responsibly? For that matter, should WE be given (this) blog? I personally vote no (as I did when YWN polled its readers). I think maybe tomorrow I will start a thread about what value the CR has served in the past 6 months. I just need to get my thoughts together.
squeakParticipantWell, Peter wasn’t a mischief maker, so she must have meant Edmund. Mixing up charlie brown and Edmund shows you just how confused she was at the time.
squeakParticipantAnd so, there goes all the mods. The CR is now closed for the night (unless he decides to moderate via blackberry – 2 hours of dancing can get tiring).
squeakParticipanter.. whoops. It’s still there, on the other thread where it should be. Sorry. Mods, you canm strike out these posts and save me the embarrassment. Or you can put them up and I’ll take what I deserve.
squeakParticipantThey took it down. THEY TOOK IT DOWN!!!!
squeakParticipantTo Charlie Brown: I think you are making a terrible mistake.
Cash, visa, mastercard – face value
Having squeak in your debt – priceless
There are some things that money can’t buy. For everything else, there is mastercard, cash, or visa.
squeakParticipantBlue&White are the colors that the Zionists took. (Of course, originally it was tzitzis with t’chailes.)
The association is that the Zionists are trying to equate themselves to the Chashmonaim. Chanuka is being hijacked as a blue&white Zionist holiday.
squeakParticipantWhen the cats come out to play, the mouse stays away.
squeakParticipantsurfer, you’re lucky yros doesn’t read anything except the last post because everyone else can find the answer.
squeakParticipantSJS – though MO may claim that they are the followers of Hirsch, they are not. Their claim has no more credence than the Neturai Karta claiming to be the followers of the Stamar Rebbe. Would the Satmar Rebbe embrace the rosho of Iran? CH”V No. Would Rabbiner Hirsch have endorsed MO (I won’t outline the details of the follies of MO, for I don’t want to insult anyone here openly)? CH”V No. And whom do you mean by MO? He is certainly not the father of the Young Israel movement (and their ilk, in the US), and no one claims that he is. So you must be talking about YU.
Torah U’Madda <> Torah Im Derech Eretz. Were you educated in YU? I doubt that your husband heard this in Darchei. That institution seeks validation by sticking out their feet and claiming to be disciples of someone whose greatness they do not understand. At best, they are disciples of JB, though I doubt that they can even claim that at this point in their downward spiral. They are certainly not following the Hirschian ideals.
And while “contemporary” rabbonim are ALL by definition, “modern”, when we say “Modern Orthodox” we do not mean “Contemporary Orthodox”. Rather, we are referring to a branch of “Orthodoxy” that compromises on Halacha. CH”V to say that Hirsch founded such an idea.
squeakParticipantI owe you one charlie brown.
squeakParticipantyou can catch up on old threads, newbie
squeakParticipantyeah. I always notice when polytriglycerides fall off. What are polytriglyceerides?
squeakParticipantInt: You attack me again without understanding my point. I didn’t say that I am not judgemental. I said that joseph was being judgemental, and then I contrasted his comment with a non-judgemental version of it. Do you understand now?
squeakParticipantI agree. Shut down the CR for the rest of the day, because it’s only downhill from here.
squeakParticipantIt’s just asd switching to lefty. Let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth.
squeakParticipantBefore anyone goes plonking down $4000 for a certificate, ask yourself what it can do for you. A simple google search turns up no results for Certificate of Business Administration – except for university pages. Why does no one have anything to say about this certification except for the universities that offer them? Does anyone ask for a “CBA” in the job description? Does it open any doors that you couldn’t go though without it? 6-8 months cleaning the floors in an office building may get you further than an unknown certificate.
I have no agenda, I’m just asking. Maybe 08 graduate can answer?
squeakParticipantWhat I said was that your logic does not fly in the face of the concept of asmachta. Chazal said that the nature of a person who gambles is that he only does so to win. As such, he does not truly give up the money he puts in the pot (in his mind) and therefore taking it is akin to stealing. I and ROB and others have explained asmachta a few times in this thread.
Certainly Chazal knew that gamblers understand the rules of gambling, and that if you lose – you lose. Asmachta means that a gambler is not gomer daas on losing the money – he expects to get it back and more. Of course he doesn’t get it back if he loses, but we consider it halachically as if he still has ownership of the money because he never really gave it up. Thus, you cannot take it.
squeakParticipantMod 72, I won’t even dare to say K in that thread! 😉 I understand, and I’ll just add that I’m glad there is only one thread where we can’t go off topic. Otherwise, we’d never have gotten here, would we? The whole fun of the CR is how it’s like playing broken telephone.
squeakParticipantsorry folks, but there have been discussions (yes, on this site) that are less parve than the superbowl. Not many, thank goodness.
December 29, 2008 6:38 pm at 6:38 pm in reply to: IDF FINALLY POUNDING GAZA: OPERATION CAST LEAD #630247squeakParticipantbrooklyn, you obviously know nothing of the situation yidden in Israel lived in before Zionism. The Arabs were always a bloodthirsty lot, and the Jews were attacked by Arab mobs many times. What you just wrote is propaganda, started by Arab sympathizers, who want you to believe that the Jews brought this violence on themselves by inventing Zionism.
squeakParticipantmerely a wild guess at what “smart” car is.
squeakParticipantI agree, joseph, your comment was not out of place in a thread like this. All I said was that you passed judgement. As I already explained – when you ask “What is the heter” and then follow it with a “I know of none”, you are saying it is impermissable.
squeakParticipantyros: He knows, but is not truly willing to lose. Azoi zugt chazal.
squeakParticipantasd is not. we have established that as a fact numerous times.
squeakParticipantI see my… Edited. regarding this and your previous post. Do to the subject matter, we are trying to adhere to the rules outlined in the 2nd post in this thread. although some comments may slip through (I have not read all the comments in this thread), generally comments that are off topic are not being approved. I do want to mentioned, for the benefit of other readers, that you did NOT violate the rules of speaking negatively regarding Yeshivas, rather your posts were just simply off topic. thanks for understanding – YW Moderator-72
squeakParticipantThere are hundreds of threads and thousands of posts on this site. Start reading.
squeakParticipantPlease explain, what am I jealous of?
squeakParticipantI doubt it. The first time I heard that joke, I laughed so hard I fell off my dinosaur.
squeakParticipantintellegent – joseph did pass judgement. He basically said that he knows of no heter to risk one’s life in the military and therefore one cannot join.
Instead, he should have said, ‘I wasn’t aware that there is a heter to join the military. Would you mind sharing the psak that you got with the oilem here so as to enlighten us’. To which I would reply, for your own sake please DO NOT.
squeakParticipantBefore cell phones, kids weren’t at risk? If you don’t give them one, they can’t get it themselves?
NO! Follow-up parenting is needed, I am sure. But what you said, Joseph, is out of line. Blogs are also a large part of why kids go off the derech. You are reading a blog. You read others. You are playing with fire.
Chanoch l’naar al pi darko. Be in touch with a Rov, rabbeim and moros. And be an active parent. But following your blanket statement is not going to save any neshamos.
December 29, 2008 5:19 pm at 5:19 pm in reply to: Sixth Sensational Agent Emes Episode Now On Sale #712024squeakParticipantThanks, mdlevine.
squeakParticipantSmart car = penny wise, pound foolish.
squeakParticipantI agree. Asmachta describes the subconscious determination to win at gambling. Even in a situation where it is clear that one is fully willing to lose the money asmachta still applies. I have heard that it may be muttar with small amounts, but take that question to your LOR.
squeakParticipantjoseph gets the prize (and to Bogen, it is Mickey, not Minnie). Not that I had Mickey in mind, but I certainly wasn’t thinking of a computer peripheral or a bathtub toy.
Why a mouse, though, I will keep to myself.
squeakParticipant17 IS close to 25. Astonishingly close.
squeakParticipantMy online profile gained no weight (or less than a microgram) over Chanuka.
squeakParticipantWhen the guy uses a fake name, talks about himself in the third person, refuses to talk over the phone and insists on meeting only in very crowded places, is constatly looking over his shoulder during the meeting and only uses very noncommittal language, I have my doubts as to whether what he is doing is legal. Not to mention that the entire idea of wiping a ticket off the record sounds like funny business.
December 26, 2008 6:08 pm at 6:08 pm in reply to: Sixth Sensational Agent Emes Episode Now On Sale #712022squeakParticipantHow would you compare the age appropriateness of the material to say, the Marvelous Middos Machine? I am wondering if it suits the same crowd. Would it be a good gift for someone who wishes for MMM4? Also, is it available on audio tape or is the visual an important part of the story? Thanks.
squeakParticipantA man is driving and out of nowhere a cat jumps in front of his car. He is unable to avoid hitting it and the cat was killed. He finds out where the cat’s owner lives and goes and knocks on the door.
A lady answers the door and the man quickly tells her what happened in a sad voice.
“I’m so sorry madam, but I just ran over your cat.”
He allows her a few moments to mourn over the cat and then he adds, “But I’d like to replace it”.
She wipes her eyes with a handkerchief and then looks up at him and says, “That would be fine, but how are you at catching mice?”
_______________
Anyone recognize that one?
squeakParticipantWe have already established that Mod42 = Deep Thought and it is therefore trivial for him to recall events from the bottom of his head as well.
squeakParticipantThat’s an event? I guess I know what you meant though, otherwise I could have said any number from 5-22.
December 26, 2008 5:40 pm at 5:40 pm in reply to: PLEASE: Clean The Snow & Ice Off Your Vehicles #628542squeakParticipantI once said something to someone on the lack of shoveling sidewalks. I walk a lot and I am very put off when I find myself on a block where I have to either walk in the gutter or climb over snow and ice. He replied that nowadays no one walks anywhere, everyone moves about by car (which seems to be true sadly – as the joke goes, people drive to the gym to walk on the treadmill) and therefore it is not important to shovel anything but the path to your driveway.
squeakParticipantDoes it start with a 10?
squeakParticipantThose who say do not know, and those who know…. do not say.
