At some point, you begin to realize that 65 is the best possible grade. 66 means you studied too hard. What good was the extra effort?

(Of course this doesn’t apply to everything 🙂

From what I hear, the learning guys who are not full-time in yeshiva (I prefer not to say non-learning guys) go to Starbucks or the like instead of a lounge. Restaurants on a first meeting is unusual in our environment, right?

anon – not the year 2000, you should remember this.

Anyway, it’s not a riddle – it’s a trivia question. Maybe we can have a trivia thread. I’ll post the full answer there.

ms? We have too many feminists already!

Speaking of disproportions, there seem to be many frum truck drivers on this site according to joseph. So I wonder, are frum truck drivers drawn to this site more than those in other professions? I guess as long as they’re not on the site while doing their job, it’s OK.

Wait – I said “their” – I forgot that I am supposed to be a truck driver too!

Jfem, I was surprised to discover this, but the Agudah in Blatimore did publish that psak on its bulletin board. Of course, you are far away now so you didn’t read it. Glad you asked for yourself.

The psak that I follow is what I said above, namely eat it or return it. I follow mine and you follow yours and for once, sholom al hacoffee room!

I suggest that you research Kugel’s main area of scholarship. He believes that Torah was written by human beings CH”V and he does not “agree” with everything that is written. Check it out – or don’t. You’re better off not knowing this kefirah.

Yes, he did avoid the controversial topics at that speech, but I’m not sure why. The quote that I read from the TEIQU spokesperson indicated that they brought him in precisely because they had studied those works and were interested in exploring them further.

And I’m sad to say that your last paragraph does not sound strange to me, because I am aware of the criticism. No need for you to suggest that I research it. I know far more than I want to.

bored@work, you sound like a very sincere person so I am pointing this out with the greatest respect: When you say “its realy all coming from my parents so I am trying to take it in” I am struck by the attitude underlying your words. One could joke that this attitude indicates that you are perfect for a kollel life, but I think that you sound too fine for a joke like that.

jfem – get your head checked (not for lice). If you want to be like the Bnos Tzelafchad, kol hakavod!! But do away with this feminist garbage.

    Anyway, back to random questions:

Why do the mods feel the need to expose every single time a user changes his or her handle? It used to be that they would catch a person multiple posting under multiple handles, and of course no one wants that. If someone is logging in and out so as to agree with their own post, put a stop to it. But why can’t someone permanently change screen names so as to regain anonymity?

It seems that feminists think that non-femininism means women are not people. Hence, any women who has an identity must be a feminist. And if someone is not a feminist, he or she is discriminating against women. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Women are people – but they are not men. Men are people – but they are not women.

Women had an identity before feminism. It is characteristic of the feminist movement that they portray themselves as bringing women up from the lowest rungs of society. Truthfully, it is the feminists who are low. Their movement has served as much purpose as the NAACP. That is, to take credit for everything good that happens to their “rachmanus cases”, and to blame all the bad on the evil antagonists. They completely dispense with logic in order to erase any thought of distinguishing between genders (as if no one can tell just by looking).

Feminism stands for abortion, the right to wear (or not wear) pants, and being anti-house wife. Our emahos did not CH”V stand for any of this.

ROB, I would have to say I don’t know. But I think that a present day talmid chochom would be able to easily refute any bible criticism that comes his way withough actively studying the subject. One with a true understanding of the Torah can defend it from falsehood. I see no reason why 19th century gedolim would HAVE to study the subject of criticism, in order to know what to refute.

It seems that your concept of gadlus b’torah is too shallow.

    Joseph:

Moving violations are a money making scam in many municipalities. (This does not justify speeding, etc.) And they are just looking for the buck, and will plea-bargain with anyone who shows up and is willing to pay up.

Exactly. And when law enforcement shows their disdain for traffic laws (both in this way and by openly violating them themselves – speeding, running red lights and stop signs even when there is no emergency) it is hard for the average citizen to take them seriously. Law enforcement personnel “get away” with it because no one enforces the law on them; we, too, can find ways to “get away with it”. It’s not about safety, it’s about getting caught.

I’m not saying that is correct, just that this is the message that they send.

Emunah is Hashem is, was and always will be. He created the world, and everything in it.

Bitachon is trusting that Hashem will take care of you in any situation.

Believing that what happens is for the best is a positive middah and a high madreiga, but I’m not sure if which category it fits in exactly. Certainly, what Joseph said is an example of bitachon – trusting that Hashem will give you the emotional and financial means to handle the number of children that He gives you.

ROB – do a google search for TEIQU and Kugel. You will find that this supposedly kosher YU organization recently invited him to speak. And if you read the same article that I did, you will find quoted that they were interested in hearing him speak because they study his “work” in their classes. If his stuff is not bible criticism, I don’t know what is.

Not to mention that I know of such classes first-hand (i.e. speaking to someone who was in these classes) and that you can research them on the YU website.

The kefirah problem is not limited to the fringes of YU. It is YU.

ROB, your problem is that you analyze Hirsch from a secular point of view. I have never seen a post of yours that is so mistaken as that last one. Is the nirvana of the Hirschian philosophy to create a college with Bible criticism, a gay club, transgender professor? They have perverted his ideal, if they ever truly sought to follow it in the first place. They are close to the Haskala movement, not the Hirschian one.

The factuality of what he says does not stand or fall based on his age. He is either wrong or right, regardless of his age.

That is true. It is either right or wrong. But his opinion carries no weight.

I don’t think anyone is going to get too worked up over the fact that a 16 year old boy thinks he believes in evolution. If relativity were controversial, would we give any weight to the opinion of a 16 year old supporting one side or another? There’s too much to analyze for someone to have a true opinion just after reading a single slim book.

dd – I wasn’t intending to reply to your comment on my use of the initials “JB” to describe one of the leaders of your sect. I am comfortable using the initials only, just as we were taught to do in my youth. My instruction comes from people infinitely many levels above your childishness. Of course this will disturb you, and I’m sorry, but I won’t refer to him as “Rav Soloveichik”. There are plenty of other Soloveichiks worthy of that honorific, and I don’t want them confused.

And if you call that mevazeh talmid chochom then I must defer to those who instructed me. They were of his generation and worthy of judging him.
