I have a strong liking for Sephardic foods (except lachmadzin, my apologies to true Sephardim for the sacrilege). Dafina and hamin have been above cholent on my list since I discovered them. And please go easy on the self-esteem injections. I don’t think I want to be set up for the freefall.

Yes, but I wouldn’t post a classified ad unless I was the one offering the job. What about if I know of an opening in a certain company that I have no control over, but I might be able to help with the process. That’s what I’m getting at. Networking.

I recently heard a funnyish story that reminded me of this thread. A non-Jewish family with a few children moved in to one of the Lakewood “sh’chunot”. They are decent people, and the non-Jewish children of this complex occasionally play together with the Jewish children of the complex. One of the mothers recounted that her child told her the following: “Mrs. Jefferson is really nice, she offered us kosher ice cream. But Rabbi Jefferson seems a little bit scary!”

Hmmmm… you’re a tough one. I see your future filled with near-constant breathing, frequent eating and drinking (multiple times per day, almost every day), and that you will dedicate a significant portion of your time to sleeping. Oh, and now that I am looking closely, I can clearly see you replying to this post (and then trying to resist hitting “Send Post”).

Everybody else, I’m sorry, but I won’t be giving any more free readings.

    I have a fan. I HAVE A FAN! WOW!

havesomeseichel – Yes, I do have a suggestion. First of all, I recommend that you try to understand that there are some people who have difficulty dealing with other people. In general these people are very difficult to deal with, but they can be dealt with if you are PATIENT!!! The solution is not to only work on doing everything to please them – because that is usually impossible (and also because “fixing” yourself will not make this person’s problem go away, but that’s not your concern).

I don’t know much about your situation, but I can suggest a starting point. You say that this person won’t talk to you (or barely does) except to provide criticism. How about if you try to develop a segment of your relationship with this person in a neutral way. Try to find something to talk about that can produce a conversation. You might start with talking about what you did over the weekend, or maybe how you found this great deal on something. Try to get the other person’s interest, and maybe he or she will respond with something of his own. Start simple. Hopefully, after a while this person will offer something more than just idle small talk. That is where you are trying to go. But don’t hurry or force it.

I think that if this is successful, it can be the foundation for getting this person to see you as a human being who needs to be treated with respect. If the person respected you, he or she would not be treating you in this way. I might be making more of this situation than there is to it, but that’s because I don’t know what it is really like.

    Good luck!

In answer to the “blocking off sites” question, I can recommend a free option – OpenDNS.

It is a free DNS service that has some extra bells and whistles. One of those is site blocking. They allow you to block traffic by category and/or by listing specific sites to block (I’d recommend using both – the categories are good but if you find out that a specific site is not categorized properly you can add it yourself).

You can set up your entire network to route traffic through OpenDNS, or you can do it on each individual PC. If you are the only one with network admin rights, no one can get around this. If you are the only one with admin rights on your computer, no one should be able to change this setting when logged in under a different name (XP or newer).

FYI: For those who don’t know what DNS service is, and someone is sure to ask, it is basically the service that translates what you type in your address bar (e.g. http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom) into an IP address (such as 69.123.343.12).

    To quote myself,

(though some parents need to learn how to deal with the knowledge, and they should seek help for that).

And help is out there. If a parent doesn’t learn how to deal with a child who “falls far from the tree” so to speak (though when you analyze it, it usually turns out to be closer than you’d think), then that parent is cutting himself/herself off from being fully involved in that child’s life.

Anyone who says that it is better for a parent not to know so they don’t worry is not a parent.

Don’t let guilt cause you to hide things from your parents. They are always better off knowing (though some parents need to learn how to deal with the knowledge, and they should seek help for that).

That’s like the alcoholic who says “I’ll prove to you that I’m not an alcoholic – I won’t touch a drop for 2 months”. That doesn’t show that he is free of addiction – it only shows that he possesses two months of willpower. The next day he will be stoned….

Why would we go back to work? That will only increase others’ expectations of our abilities. Which will lead to more work. It’s a vicious cycle, don’t start it.

Rubbish leads to more rubbish, but there are fewer expectations.

Why? Is Raizel Wright (however you spell it) only for women? I don’t see why it should be since there are no classes. AFAIK, it’s just a program that has everything sorted out so that you can get a degree fast with “yeshiva credits”, CLEPs and the like.

In this past you’ve been this flattering to characters such as brkln19 and intellegent, but I get this type of compliment without even mentioning that I need a self-esteem boost? You are being very generous, and I’m a bit red in the face.

havesomeseichel – was the person you were speaking to wearing a blue pinstriped suit, white shirt and bow tie? Carrying a black leather attache case? That wasn’t me.

Of course I was not joking. Almost nothing done over the internet is truly anonymous and untrackable. It all depends on how motivated and how empowered your tracker is.

For starters, every post here has an IP address tag. So anyone who wants to look can see the name of your service provider and the location (except in asdf’s case, where he has the IP bounce off a server in Ireland for kicks).

Until the Rosh HaYeshiva states that bochurim cannot go out for coffee breaks during seder, there is no reason why they cannot utilize the coffee break to check their phone that is in their coat pocket also. And that should be enough to assuage their mothers’ worries.

The Rosh HaYeshiva does not need my haskomo, but I have seen personally how distruptive it is (for ones’ self) to have a cell phone within reach while learning. And an entire Beis Medrash full of bochurim with cell phones magnifies the problem (so that it is constantly noticable how much battala it causes).
