I’m not saying it’s not different, just that the “ban” on kids from “internet homes” is definitely based on the ban vis-a-vis “TV homes”. And my point is that it is not a valid comparison until the internet issue is fully ironed out.
squeakParticipantIs that how it’s done? I don’t really know the reality of it, but in all the ads it shows a burger sizzling on the grill (or right off it) and a disembodied hand placing a slice of cheese on it….
squeakParticipantmoish – why shouldn’t you be worthy?
squeakParticipantCurious: That’s MY sig! You can’t give it away 🙁
squeakParticipantI assume that this giant luncheon is now “indefinitely postponed”?
squeakParticipantJust to reiterate for ROB and GAW. I do not have an opinion on this (mostly because it is not relevant to me, so why would I ask a Rov about it?). I was merely observing the matter-of-fact psak that yossiea gave and stated why I believe he is not a credible source. I certainly wasn’t instructing anyone to engage in “machmerization”.
P.S. I used the term “right wing” only because I felt that it made my message more gentle. I did not intend to get into a discussion over what that term actually means (obviously, everyone thinks that their Rov is right).
squeakParticipantsome things never change…. like lyrics from BY songs.
squeakParticipantRaise your hand if you can read that! (I can)
squeakParticipantA group of men are shipwrecked on a deserted island. To pass the time, they tell each other jokes. After a year of being stranded, they have all told over all of their jokes so many times, that everyone knows them by heart. So, instead of wasting time telling them, they numbered all the jokes and anyone who wanted to tell a joke would just call out its number.
One day, a man washes up on the shore. He was just shipwrecked and now he is stranded there with all the other men. On his first day, the men are sitting around and someone calls out a joke.
“429!” says one man. The whole group erupts in laughter.
“672!” says someone else. Again, everyone is in stitches.
The new guy doesn’t really understand what is going on but sees this as an oppotunity to bond with the group. He works up some courage and stands up and yells, “243!”. Dead silence. “What’s the matter? How come you all laughed at everyone else’s number but not at mine?”
The man next to him pats him on the shoulder and says, “It’s all in how you tell it.”
<P.S. I know what a pathetic joke this is. I’m hoping that ames will repeat her comment, as I enjoyed it very much. When I tried to post my thanks to her, my post was deleted (seemingly for no reason, maybe it just got lost), so now I’m fishing for another compliment so I can try again.>
squeakParticipantMy advice would be to stay inside with the shades drawn until your flight back.
squeakParticipantames, that has nothing to do with it 🙂
squeakParticipantNo birds are left.
Moish – your example with the BigMac is worse (in Halacha) than the other example. A cheeseburger is an example of Milk and Meat that is prohibited by the Torah outright (because the meat and milk is cooked together). Having milk a half hour after meat, or even at the same meal if it is cold, is prohibited by the Rabbonon. Practically, it makes no difference (because both are prohibited), but it is good to know the difference.
squeakParticipantI know – I didn’t even get royalties when they printed my Browser Security Handbook! The court upheld their case because I sent it via email to be edited.

**but then everyone forgets you and doesnt’ know who u are :o(
Is that a bad thing? Besides, just because Mod72 forgets you doesn’t mean squeak does!
Welcome to the coffeeroom, by the way. I don’t believe I’ve seen you before. Check out the new members thread, a la asdfghjkl!!!!!!!
squeakParticipantDo sports athletes have blogs where they discuss the yeshiva world?
squeakParticipantWell, one thing I may add to this discussion is this: We are still in the early stages of the ban on the internet. This situation is akin to the yeshivos not allowing children with a television into their schools in the ’70s. We don’t know yet how this will pan out (I personally think that the ban will fail, we need a more workable solution, but that is beside the point). In the meantime, not allowing the children into the school is too aggressive.
I think many people will agree with me that it makes sense NOWADAYS that some yeshivos do not allow children with a television in their home into their school. I have personally seen how a child with no television is adversely affected by the classmates who do have one. But that is because the stance on television is pretty well understood. The stance on internet has not yet reached that level of “black-and-white”ness, and therefore I feel it is not appropriate to be so aggressive about it yet.
squeakParticipantOK. Joseph – I refer you to Will Hill’s comment in the Smoking thread. I don’t believe him, but it is one explanation.
Re my “playful” comment, yes I was teasing a bit, but I only mentioned it because it applies. Ususally when there is this type of discussion yours is the second or third post. This time, you were late so I added it for you (b’shimecha).
yossiea, your bile is noted. For the record, I did not analyze your statement yet (and I don’t plan to). I only noted that the tone of your post was to write off what may be a legitimate halachic concern. Judging from the discussions that we have had in the past, and the disdain that you showed then for Talmidei Chachamim, I felt that a disclaimer on your post was needed. Thankfully, the Mod agreed.
squeakParticipantmoish – you ask a very good question. The answer may be a bit complicated, but basically it is that God instructed us not to do damaging things to our bodies. Bring up this question to someone you look up to – I’m sure it will generate some good discussion.
BTW, I have smoked. A few times only, though.
squeakParticipantLately, I’ve had a lot of (truly) innocuous posts not show up. Mods, have you been deleting a lot of my posts? I’m not asking WHY, only IF. If the answer is no, I think maybe there is something wrong with the computer that I use (I definitely typed it out and clicked send, but maybe it doesn’t transmit?).
January 20, 2009 12:16 am at 12:16 am in reply to: Most Common Surname Among Torah Observant Jews #828916squeakParticipantLOL jphone! I nominate you for potential post of the year! Second?
By the same token, the most common first name is HRH”G (for those that didn’t get what jphone said, ahem, ahem).
squeakParticipantNo kidding! Do you mean that you all have lives? We know that Mod72 claims to have a family (who is dying to meet him) but I didn’t think that I could assume that ALL of you have something.
So why did you volunteer to moderate? It sure is nice of you to give up your time for all of us here in the CR. I should double your salary! (that’s what the guy in my shul says anytime I offer to help out with klal work, though of course that joke is responsible for killing the Dead Sea)
I hope that is not too personal! No, no – move your finger AWAY from that delete button! NOW!
to all of you who were wondering – we all have lives. B”H.

what is the difference between drinking and smoking?
Drinking involves swallowing, and goes down your esophagus to your stomach. Smoking involves inhaling, and goes to your lungs via the trachea.
squeakParticipantP.S. In case others do not recall from earlier posts, both yossiea and oomis follow rabbonim whose views differ greatly from those of most right-wing rabbonim. Please do not assume that these statements are credible until you have checked them out with a halachic authority whom you trust.
squeakParticipantFor what it’s worth, she is absolutely right as far as I’m concerned.

Mi ke’amcha Yisroel!
squeakParticipantWhether you see it as paranoid or not, there are certain things that I am fudging to keep people from figuring out who I am (which we see is a good idea, based on other peoples’ experiences here). But one thing I am not going to fool around with is this – I am not a gal. Thank you, Will Hill, for reading enuf squeak.
squeakParticipantgive the guy a ribbon for his sense of humor!
squeakParticipantYour efforts are paying off, good work!
areivim said that I was suggesting you take an “It doesn’t matter to me” attitude. Which is almost, but not quite, what I meant. It certainly does matter to you; it is just that it is out of your control. Which is why I don’t suggest that you try to get this person to speak to you in sentences. Maybe he has a reticent or introverted personality. Maybe he doesn’t speak to anyone in sentences (I know people like this).
But you should not stand around and take verbal abuse from this person either. So my suggestion was just that you try to get him to see you as a person by chatting with him occasionally. Don’t try to make him into a different person, just make him see that YOU are one. Hopefully, he will soon be able to see you as something more than just a vessel to receive criticism.
If he still only criticizes you after all your effort, well, there are always other places to work.
squeakParticipantDiversions are a part of all blogs. Some have dedicated sections so that the non-diversion threads stay “clean”. But this blog does not have that.
Jewish geography is the favorite game of all Jewish people I know (though more so religious ones). If you don’t enjoy it, I hope that you will be able to avoid it and still enjoy the rest of what goes on here. Though I would encourage you or anyone to express your views and opinions about what we should or should not discuss here, I have no doubt that you would be voted down.
squeakParticipantI see I can’t take what you say at face value. I lack the desire to meet in any case. What I am curious about is why you want to meet me? I’m not such an interesting person. Is it just so you can find out what is fact and what is fiction?
squeakParticipantHmm, interesting. Because I am using a laptop with a non-native resolution right now. I will assume that you are not using an (antiquated) passive-matrix display. If your is TFT as mine is, then maybe the problem could be related to the video card or other hardware?
squeakParticipantNot yet, kapusta. I’m still eagerly awaiting it…
squeakParticipantMod72, you are my favorite moderator of the bunch. And you’re pretty high up on my list of all my favorite coffeeroom people. So no matter what you may think popular opinion of you is here, just know that you have at least one real fan.
:o)
squeakParticipantAn acquaintance of mine was in China for the Olympics last summer. He was always on the lookout for athletes so that he could take a picture with them. One day, he spotted a man carrying a very long pole. He quickened his steps to catch up to the man, and called out to him, “Excuse me, are you a pole-vaulter?”
The man turned around, looked him up and down, and replied, “No, I am German. But how did you know my name is Walter?”
squeakParticipantThat seems to really be the only reason you want to meet me. In that case, I have no desire to oblige.
squeakParticipant…works every time 🙂
it all has to do with the backlog and currently the backlog of posts to be reviewved is long. have patience.
squeakParticipantI was wondering whether or not you’d approve my post. I guess it wouldn’t be good for business, right?
squeakParticipant… as in, Pom Womderful
squeakParticipantThe trick to kicking this addiction is simple. Log out. As long as you do not post, the threads will become less and less interesting to you. After a while you won’t even come on to read.
squeakParticipantIt’s not that at all areivim. It is more like this: You should only concern yourself over things within your control or responsibility. In most cases, that means only controlling your own actions and reactions. The other person is responsible for their own, and you can’t do anything about it.
squeakParticipantnice diyuk, but the loshon I used was typical of me. I am purposely as ambiguous as possible in the CR.
squeakParticipantI’ll confirm at the meet.
squeakParticipantGood job, seichel! You are in control of how you feel about this person’s behavior. If you don’t want to let it bother you, no one else can make it bother you. That won’t stop his behavior, but keep in mind that that is purely HIS issue. Nothing he does is your problem, only your reaction is.
squeakParticipantbut only one that I know of, i.e. that you publicized on YW
squeakParticipantgabs – so women have less stress than men, huh? I knew it! Now let me go tell every woman I know how easy her life is….
squeakParticipant~a~, I don’t think that there’s anyone who doesn’t need to hear a good thing about themselves once in a while.
Well fielded, Joseph!
<clears a path for charlie brown and areivim to enter>
squeakParticipantRight now you can search for anything since I am not interested in giving you any more clues as to who I am.
squeakParticipantActually, I don’t know. Prodigy was the first provider I ever used at home (and not until the 90’s). My email was through the college. As I mentioned off-hand a good while back, I was an active participant in many USENET exchanges. Some of those old threads are still floating around the internet now! Just don’t look for the name squeak – we used our email addresses.
squeakParticipantSorry, moish, for cornering you until you said something you regretted.
squeakParticipantJoseph: yes, as I already replied to areivim in a different thread (a couple of minutes ago).
