nah. Any interesting topic gets revisited pretty often (whether directly or through a tangent).
squeakParticipant:’) Joseph, that was so sweet. Few people have attached such importance to little old me.
squeakParticipantI’ve had very few deleted until recently… Now everything I say seems to make some mod nervous.
squeakParticipantI think that I am the most misunderstood poster in the CR
squeakParticipantJoseph, did you intend to reveal that you saw one of my deleted posts?
squeakParticipantchocolate
January 22, 2009 3:26 am at 3:26 am in reply to: Daven With A Hat BeYichidus or Without it with a Minyan #1081746squeakParticipantSJS, I believe that was Joseph’s question.
January 22, 2009 3:22 am at 3:22 am in reply to: Most Common Surname Among Torah Observant Jews #828962squeakParticipantgreat! I’ll do the copy/paste labor in the morgen.
squeakParticipantJoseph – I tried posting it but the mods didn’t let me. If you’re a mod, I guess I’ll find out in a few minutes 😉
squeakParticipantso chuck, am I gonna see you at Chevy’s kiddush?
squeakParticipantareivim, as TM likes to say, your yiddish is flawless.
squeakParticipantI enjoy the thrill of the additional security risk it poses.
squeakParticipantchuck, we ARE brothers. I’d know your humor anywhere.
squeakParticipantThis is the first time I ever checked the CR using Firefox, and the first time that the boxes look like boxes. With IE, everything looks messed up. Did anyone else notice that?
Too bad Curious went to bed before anyone solved the secret word.
squeakParticipantSounds like gitty is an old timer in the CR
squeakParticipantJust like we used to send our leftovers from supper to the poor starving people in Africa rather than throw them out!
squeakParticipantBut we visit you every day! How many friends do you have like THAT, eh? eh?
squeakParticipantAnd I replied in all seriousness.
squeakParticipantGood morning, moish! And in case I don’t see you, Good afternoon, Good evening, and Good night!
January 21, 2009 8:26 pm at 8:26 pm in reply to: Daven With A Hat BeYichidus or Without it with a Minyan #1081721squeakParticipantmoish01, it depends on how they enforce that rule. If they have spare hats outside the bais medrash so that all visitors without hats can borrow one for davening, fine. If you refuse to take the hat, then they refuse you entry into the shul. If they don’t have the means to help people off the street comply, then I agree it’s a bit wacky.
I was once in a shul where the minhag hamakom was for all men and boys to wear a tallis. I accepted the tallis they offered me. My friend did not, and was asked to daven in a different shul where the minhagim are to his liking.
squeakParticipantI know! The pink ones especially! They are soooo scary.
January 21, 2009 3:33 pm at 3:33 pm in reply to: Shidduch Crisis, Daas Torah and Hishtadlos #634677squeakParticipantoomis you are mistaken about that. It depends on what “stage” the divorce is in. If there is a possibility that it may not happen, she is not forbidden to him.
squeakParticipantujm: I do believe that I attended many such asifos. I also believe that a workable solution has not yet been reached. I also believe that this is generally understood, and that the parnossim of klal yisrael are working with the Gedolim towards a workable solution.
What I know is that many fine, reputable, yeshivish schools allow children from homes with the internet into their schools. Probably because a solution is not available. I am sure that these same schools will change their policy as soon as there is a better understanding of how to deal with this problem.
That is why I call I refer to those who are hasty to institute a ban as “mavericks”.
squeakParticipantThat’s right, ames. They are Arabs. Their homeland is Saudi Arabia.
squeakParticipantThe Satmar takanos are different from the generic takanos that were issued about 7-8 years ago. Different in scope and different in audience. I agree with you that they are doing a world of good (because they are enforced across the board).
squeakParticipantOh my gosh! You mean there’s a main site too? Like, LOL.
Joseph, k’mayim ponim el ponim…..
squeakParticipantMrs. B, are you like this in other social settings as well? Do you dictate to your friends the course that your conversations must take? If you bump into Sara Rivka and start talking about the sale on wigs, and then she mentions something about her brother starting to date, do you insist that she get back on track? Is that also spoiling the discussion? Most people let a conversation take its course.
squeakParticipantEven Dr. Doomsberger found that out.
squeakParticipantBoohoo, Mod55 (if that’s who you are. you didn’t even indicate that it was “mod type” when you invaded my post). Now I’m emotionally scarred because you made fun of my first attempt instead of giving me encouragement.
Sorry, I thought you could handle it. (It was not 55 by the way)
squeakParticipantmoish you are a genius. (+2)
squeakParticipantI was referring to this line that you wrote, which was absent from the formal document you call the takanos (I think that they were only proposed as “suggestions” in the end).
When you praise Hashem for the goods in your life is it by showing off all your taavos?!
squeakParticipantareivim – see my PS above.
squeakParticipantIs it not also dangerous for our children’s neshamos to be banned from attending a good yeshiva? Simply because one administrator feels the need to be a maveric?
squeakParticipant2 legs? Are you referring to the birds exhibit?
squeakParticipantYou do all the things they do. So you see yourself as being just like them? Is that your point?
squeakParticipantI tried to raise my hand, but my ASCII effort was obviously so pathetic that the mods spared me the embarrassment and didn’t approve the post. Oh. Is that what that was supposed to be?
squeakParticipantxerox, I was just kidding around.
asdf – how can anyone NOT remember it’s your thread? You only mention it 5x per day.
squeakParticipantRY hits the nail on the head again.
squeakParticipantSJS, it is meat that you cannot eat after eating hard cheese. See the Pischei Halacha for the reason and what is considered hard cheese (not most cheeses that we eat).
squeakParticipantmoish, as I said earlier, you are making good points. You are indeed echoing some of the the points made by others earlier in the thread. AFAIK, heavy smoking is very strongly correlated with disease and early death (hence higher life insurance premiums for smokers), but that does not prove the effect of an occasional cigarette. There’s also no proof that the body doesn’t start to recover after a person quits. Finally, there is the well known argument that if you smoke for 80 years you will live a long life.
You’ve touched on a true gray area. I don’t think anyone on this board is going to prove you wrong. Maybe they will say that smoking (in general) is bad for you, and I don’t think you would disagree (I wouldn’t). But what does that mean for the “social smoker”? Stick to your guns and say what you think (or vice versa). Even if everyone is on the other side of the argument, all that means is that you’ve managed to engage numerous people in an intelligent discussion.
(score +1 for my vendetta)
squeakParticipantmoish01 – I’m truly sorry that I came across as not liking you. That is simply not the case. I am now enacting an “answer every future post by moish01” vendetta to counter that impression.
Mods, sorry that everyone else is now bugging you for their deleted post info. You can completely ignore them and continue to give up-to-the-minute information on the status of all of my posts only. Thanks again.
squeakParticipantTwo men are sitting by a stream, fishing. Suddenly, a game warden appears behind them. One of the men jumps up and bolts for the forest! The warden chases him, and after 10 minutes the man gives up, out of breath. The warden says, “OK, sir, you are in big trouble. I’m going to give you a ticket for fishing without a license. And since you made me chase you I’m going to write down the maximum fine.”
The man looks up and says, “License? I have a license. It’s right here in my wallet!”
The warden asks, “So then why did you run away from me?”
“Because of my buddy. HE doesn’t have a license.”
squeakParticipantNot by a long shot :o) TY for checking.
You’ve just confirmed that there is something wrong with my computer (because more than 2 of my posts are missing – the rest disappearing must have been due to something else)
squeakParticipantSometimes you want to get a feel for who you are conversing with. I don’t know if sharing email addresses is the best idea since that would essentially make YW into a meeting site/brokerage. I agree, though, with the recent stance by YW not to post any revealing information (even though I personally have never revealed anything that enables posters track me down). The chatting is part of the discussion – it gives the poster an identity. We just need to be sure that the line is drawn so not too much is shared. But my opinion is not to draw the line too far back either. If YW decided to abolish screen names (and make everyone anon or guest), I would probably lose interest in posting. I bet many others would too.
January 20, 2009 8:35 pm at 8:35 pm in reply to: Most Common Surname Among Torah Observant Jews #828946squeakParticipantDon’t you hate when the page that loads has no posts on it and no navigation buttons?
squeakParticipantWith your what? Materialism? Dveykus?
January 20, 2009 8:15 pm at 8:15 pm in reply to: Shidduch Crisis, Daas Torah and Hishtadlos #634665squeakParticipantI agree with your ice cream analogy. If you eat chocolate and I eat vanilla, we are still both eating ice cream.
It’s when I hear about low-fat ice cream, or worse – tofu substitutes, that I start to get belligerent.
squeakParticipant42, Understood. But my question was about undisputably innocuous posts, like saying thank you to ames for a compliment. I thought that maybe my posts were being automatically deleted, but I can see today that that was not true. So I’m guessing it has to do with my computer.
squeakParticipantI’m surprised that so many are having the same problem. I never had this before. My other thought was that it was the presence of an ad that requires Flash player, and I do not have the most current version. Every time I load CR I am prompted to update, and I say no. Does anyone else who said Ditto have the same situation?
squeakParticipantIt comes from a perception that Purim is about “hefkeirus”, which is absolutely wrong.
