yes, but you will seriously deplete your oxygen supply quickly causing you to hyperventilate slightly. You will also create great stress on your eyes leading to headaches and fatigue. Is that a good diet strategy?

In fact, nobody could have written it better. Hey, she did!

    ______________________________________________________________________

There is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.

There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.

Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.

Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody’s job.

Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it.

It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

ames, you should definitely use the bag. It ruins the flavor a little bit, but it’s better than not making cholent at all.

If you’re willing to clean out the pot right away, it would be easy. But days later? Yuck. I personally use a teflon crockpot (when I make it cholent, which is rare to never these days) and I pregrease the teflon coating with a thin layer of oil (wet a napkin with oil and wipe the surface with it). Nothing ever sticks.

Joseph, I am far from comfortable blurbing the words of Harav Chaim Volozhin. Especially in this Shaar. He uses some very powerful words, and I could never repeat them for common distribution (I’m sure you will understand exactly what I mean).

I started a thread with the same idea a week or so ago. Namely, I started to notice a number of frum family men who lost their job and others who were in danger of it. I am hoping that if anyone has a random lead for a breadwinner job they can post what they know and maybe some good will come of it.

Joseph, first of all, thanks for handling the case so well. Is it FULL amnesty? i.e., can I come back from Syria now? I miss the chilly weather.

Second, the drop in income is not a problem because here I can hire household help for less than $1 per person per day. So I’m actually living like a millionaire.

Third, my cover may or may not have been thin, but I guarantee you that no one else will find it out (though SJS would have known who I am if I had been right about her).

SJS, there is NOTHING wrong with getting paid in cash. Not in my opinion, and not in the opinion of the IRS. There are circumstances that require it. Not reporting those cash payments, however, is illegal. Of course no frum person should be doing anything illegal. So taking cash “under the table” to maintain welfare status is crooked and is NOT condoned.

Not trying to get a job, is a valid and legitimate response to incentives. I have no problem with that. Make it sweet enough and I won’t work a day in my life. In the UK, they actually have such a system, where one can volunteer to NOT join the workforce in exchange for payments.

The number of games that people do is enormous. Some are completely legitimate, some are pretty shady. But I will only condemn the ones that are illegal (though I would never want anyone I know to do anything shady either).

OK, Nobody, take the CoffeeRoom and subtract the personal conversations and sheer rubbish. What do you have left? Might as well cancel those advertising contracts now.

I’m not saying you can’t express views on different aspects of life, but since those views are few and far between why enforce silence in between?

SJS, if you allow plus or minus 1.96 standard deviations then you’ve covered 95% of all topics of conversation.

Joseph, I agree with you that limits should be set. I just think that the bar is too low.

I believe German custom is to tovel keilim that are made out of plastic. But I think that only applies to hard plastic, since it is given to becoming a permanent keili, and not soft plastic which is flimsy and disposable.

In general, one does not need to tovel a disposable item. Even if one reuses the item, if it is intended to be disposable (and the person will eventually dispose of it) it does not require tevila. Hence, a soda can, or a snapple bottle may be refilled with water without tevilla, because they are disposable.

It follows that if one would decide to keep an item for permanent use (say a soft drink that comes in a nice glass container, such as I’ve seen POM tea come in), it would be proper to tovel it before reusing.

As with any such issue, the best thing is to find out what you can and then ask the Rov whose psak you follow.

SJS, have no doubt that you are right. You can daven to/thank Hashem every second of your life, for anything you want. That shows a tremendous devaikus (purposely spelled it differently, so no wise guy makes a crack about Abie Rottenberg here). But you should also keep the prayers instituted by the Anshei Kenesses Hagedolah.

moish, when you have time do look up the term that I used. I believe if you read about it you will find interesting things about yourself.

SJS, a good deal depends on how often you follow the Rov’s advice. If you decide pretty much everything on your own, but go to the Rov once or twice a year, I have no doubt that you will not see much seyata d’shmya from it. It’s the people who rely on their Rov for everything that find out how valuable daas torah is.

Everyone can make mistakes, even Moshe Rabbeinu did. But how many people make as few as he did? The point is that if you think that your mistakes are on the same level as the ones a Rov makes, well, you’re making another mistake 🙂

As for your comment about Chassidus, I see that you have no idea what Chassidus was like originally, or what the Rabbonim had against it. I never met a Chassid who rolls in the snow, or refuses to learn anything but Mussar all day. Chassidus evolved, and with that evolution it gained acceptance. Lihavdil, do you realize that modern day capitalism is not pure capitalism, as Karl Marx made some very good points in his manifesto. Capitalists decided to adopt some of his ideas in order to keep the workers from throwing off their chains. Aren’t you glad that you don’t have to work 14 hours per day and live in a hovel?

SJS, do you subscribe the belief that God is a “clockmaker”, who “wound up” the world and then went away? This is now the second time that you have indicated that you do. That belief is kefirah. Read the first Ani Ma’amin to learn why.

No moish, most people don’t look at “guys like you” as wimps. That’s because most of us struggle with the same feelings that you have. Some of us more than others. Some of us constantly. And the only reason why we’re still “frummies” is because we hash it out, whether it be with people or on our own (obviously with people is better).

Now if you told me that you didn’t believe in God, then I’d call you a wimp. That’s a cop-out to deal with cognitive dissonance. But if you know what’s right and acknowledge it, that takes guts, especially when you have no interest in doing what that admission means you have to do. We all do wrong things. It’s just a question of minimizing it.
