SJS, nothing could be farther from the truth. Improper use of the internet harms marriages, families, friendships, and more. Not just the person who uses it.

I like dogs, but I wouldn’t want to own one. I don’t like the type of maintenance they require. Cats on the other hand, maybe. But I really just meant to say “pet”.

No, this time it’s Yiddish, which I don’t normally spell with Latin letters. I could reword it in Deutsch, if you’d like, or I could just translate. I said that we must have a bit to drink after the fish. So I make something that everyone can stomach (though I myself stick to good ‘ole Maker’s Mark).

What would you call it? Ames’ and Mazal77’s wacky creations? I’m not sure either one of them would go for it, unless they don’t notice it after you change the foum name to something less demeaning (which still shows in the URL).

I see the comparison between internet and smoking. Having the internet is a risk. Smoking is a risk (I allow the argument that smoking is not an inherent danger because some smokers have no problems). Who is to say which risk is higher?

The question is, what is your risk appetite? Hopefully, it is low for both your neshama and your health. The difference is that the risks associated with the internet are completely within your control. The risks associated with each puff of a cigarette are out of your control the moment after you take the puff. Blind banning of the internet means that we do not trust anyone to exercise control. Blind banning of smoking means that we recognize the fact that the risk cannot be managed.

teen – that’s called blaming other people for your decision. You decided to cut back on your observance. The fact that other people gave you a bad taste or did something to turn you off doesn’t actually make you go off – it’s just an outside factor and you decided how much weight to give it. Your choices are to react by rejecting religion to spite those people, or to continue being religious despite them. Believe me, they won’t get any credit for what you do despite them, so don’t think that by going off you avoid giving them satisfaction they would get if you didn’t.

And, as I said before, it’s a new decision every day. So what you decided in the past doesn’t affect your ability to decide now (though it might make the decision more difficult to follow through with). My advice is find people you like and avoid the ones you don’t (sounds soooo simple, no?).

teen, let me clarify. You cannot blame others for your decisions or your actions. Abuse can cause serious psychological problems. I do not say that the victim is to blame for those problems. We are talking about two different things.

SJS – you might be able to blow my cover from a different angle than Joseph did. I really don’t think anyone else would be able to pick up the trail he did.

areivim, my relationship with Joseph goes way back. In fact, I started posting on YW just for the fun of arguing with him. It was pretty neutral until he was offended by a comment of mine, and threw a barb at me. After that, we cleared the air and have been buddies ever since. What’s even funnier is that he and I are lumped together as two of a kind by so many other poster when it is so far from the truth. However, you and I have always had an amicable relationship, so you are clearly at a disadvantage. (:

moish, you are laying blame at the feet of others instead of accepting responsibility for your choices. You are not ignorant. You know what’s what. People can and do spend their lives blaming others for how they turned out. It’s bogus. You control your life, no matter how badly other people may affect you. Only you can decide how to react to what other people say or do. Do you really think that you are the only person who has had a bad experience with a rebbe?

No matter how much of a bad influence he was, no matter how much motivation he gave you to do a 180 on your life, you are still the one who did it. You also blame hormones; are you the only one with hormones? You chose to follow your basest needs and wants instead of battling against them and standing up for what you know is right. That was and is your choice. I say “is” because it is a decision you make every day. Tomorrow you can decide to do a 180 again and if you don’t you are deciding to continue what you know you don’t want to do.

And don’t go back to saying “squeak doesn’t like me” again (another teenage cop-out). You know I do. This is what we call “tough love”. (:

Basically, everything is relative. For one thing, the human race shares all the same ancestors. So no matter how careful we are to avoid interfamily marriages, we can’t avoid being related, at least slightly, to everyone in the world.

That’s in general. Special relatives are a different story. Everyone has them, and everyone knows who they are.

Hope that answer satisfies. Now, can we talk about meaningful ways to bring about world peace?
