“He accidentally knocked the tip into the back of my right hand with the back of his left hand.”
I realize that’s what happened. I was interpreting it that he accidentally burned you, so you ‘accidentally’ burned him back.
I don’t have a TI-92 Plus, just a regular old 92. Never used it- as I said, it was meant as a desk copy. The most complex calculator that I ever needed was a <gasp> two line display scientific.
squeakParticipant646-
Note that the conversation has steered away from the question “should they be allowed to build a mosque”.
Building there is simply in poor taste. Poor taste is not illegal in this country, as evidenced by the jokes that start to go around when there is an election.
But illegal? Should they be stopped from building there? Certainly not. People are merely appealing to the sensibilities of those making the decision to build. Apparently, those sensibilities are lacking.
squeakParticipantSJS-
I’m glad you notice the similarities. Now let’s note the differences.
Let’s leave the “bloody history” of Tanach for a different discussion. Let it suffice for here to say that it is not an example of persecution.
At the most simplistic level, the difference is that we write off the NK as misguided (read: unguided) loonies with perverted sense of right and wrong, while the actions of the Crusaders and Jihadists are designed, sanctioned, and/or supported by the rank leaders of the faith. As such, all followers of the faith are buying in to that “service of G-d” (or god, as the case may be) by recognizing that leadership. In the case of NK it is quite clear that Jewish leadership and their followers denounce them and their actions. We do not support them financially or otherwise. We vocally condemn their atrocities (atrocities by our standards, not the much lower standards of the general public).
In the case of the Christian Crusaders, no one denies that the opposite is true – the holy war and the pillaging of communities was indeed sanctioned by the pope himself, as was the Inquisition. That is why it is important that the current leaders of the religion publicly distance themselves from those atrocities- so as to not be counted as a participant.
In the case of the Muslims of today, it is a bit more murky – in that although it has been proven time and again that terrorism is directed, funded, and encouraged by Islamic leadership, they still deny it for PR reasons and pretend that each individual terrorist is a random misguided loony. Which is precisely what makes these conversations difficult – because there are two sides here, 1) you can take the Muslim leaders seriously, or 2) you can just add lying to the world to the list of their crimes against humanity.
I don’t expect you to change your mind, but I will stand solidly behind what I am saying – Muslims collectively do not refuse to be associated with the leadership that has shown involvement with Jihadists. They do not condemn and distance themselves from the “loonies”, except when the cameras are rolling. As long as the worshipers continue to follow such leaders, they are giving tacit approval to the decisions by the leaders to support the war against the rest of the world.

You would be sparing everyone who chooses to avoid this thread. Some people (even non-nerdy ones) appreciate worthwhile nerdy conversations.
Dr. P-
I am now demanding a book! I’ll write a full introduction, if that’s what it takes.
Some comments about your story-
I was anticipating the “actually it’s a kohein thing” line (yes, I expect you to believe that), but I still had to hang onto my kishkes when I got to it.
“He jumped up with excitement and knocked the soldering iron into me- giving both of us some nasty burns on our hands.”
I am loving how knocking the iron into YOU gave BOTH of you burns! I guess I should never face you with my back turned 🙂
I hate your proof (if you ever meant it seriously), though it seems that the great Scientist PY seems to think along those lines too. Not that my opinion means anything in the face of the logic of two people better versed in mathematics than I, but I’m still entitled to opinions in cyberspace, aren’t I? (I would have said ‘in this country’ but apparently not).
As for the TI 89, I pegged you as a bit older. I never really had a use for one, though I did get a TI 92 once as a desk copy (mighty unusual for me). Who would have thought of using it to play music back when CD players were larger than the calculator?
squeakParticipant80-
You are getting at the same point as I am.
squeakParticipantI didn’t realize how much weltanschauung there was in the CR – I thought the OP was asking for some easy light reading, but the folks come back with epics such as Tintin and the works of Dr. Seuss! Astounding!
squeakParticipantSJS-
Is every Christian responsible for the bloodshed of the Crusades?
For the Inquisition? For the blood libels? Is Christianity responsible? Or is it just the individual soldiers of Christendom who are responsible, and their unfortunate coreligionists merely innocent spectators?
August 27, 2010 3:28 pm at 3:28 pm in reply to: It's Almost September… Does every child have a school? #693786squeakParticipantHow can people even think of paying for vacations, massive simchos, fancy cars/house/clothes etc, before paying for their children’s chinuch?!
It’s really quite simple. If you don’t pay for your vacations, massive simchos, fancy cars, etc – no one else will pay for them on your behalf. You simply won’y have those items. But if you don’t pay for your childrens’ chinuch someone else will pay for you. You miss out nothing by not paying.
squeakParticipantSJS, why is there not enough money?
Are the schools paying employees too much? Too many employees? Not charging enough tuition? Not getting enough doantions? Allowing too many children from one family (i.e. not diversifying enough)? Etc.
Those are just some ideas that little old me can come up with. I am told that those possessing ruach hakodesh can identify the exact cause of a crisis. Does this not qualify as a big enough crisis to get their signatures? Rabboisai, this is the GROUNDWORK of yiddishkeit! If not for frum schools we wouldn’t even have any children entering the shidduch market. I can’t believe that such a declaration has been so long in coming.

squeakParticipantMr. 80, can I file an appeal or have you already done so?
squeakParticipantThank you, 42. I suspected it was you.
squeakParticipantThanks for the responses, but I’m not looking for suggestions from anyone here. What I would like to see is a letter from the Gedolim explaining what the primary cause of this crisis is so that we can go about fixing the root of the problem. Perhaps we can get the 70 to sign it and put an end to this cruel game? I think everyone involved would be willing to hear and implement the solution.
Every year, more and more children are stranded with no school for them.
squeakParticipantThe only cruel game is the one AZ is playing.
squeakParticipantVidi.
squeakParticipantI think you mean ING’s Sharebuilder program.
This is set up to take advantage of dollar cost averaging strategy. The idea is that you set up an account with automatic stock buy orders on a regular basis (once a week). The amount spent each week is the same (it should be an amount that is safely discretionary out of your net pay), but the share price will vary. When the price is high you will buy fewer shares and when it is low you will buy more shares.
Dollar cost averaging is a very good strategy to be aware of, but if you are just “testing the waters” I don’t think blindly signing on to ING’s program is a good idea. You should probably learn something about the stock market and investing first. Investing in mutual funds before going into individual stocks is also an excellent “feet wetter”.
If and when you do decide that you are ready to trade stocks individually, know your investment strategy beforehand (i.e. what you plan on doing with the money when your brokerage account is all set to go). Then practice that strategy on paper for a few months (6 months is a good amount of time) first, to see how well it plays out and how well you understand what you are getting into. Many brokerage companies offer a “virtual” trading account for free, as a service so that your “paper trading” is easy, quick, and completely realistic.

2 points if you figure it out on your own.
Actually, let’s make it 5 points since it’s kind of wacky.
You looked at OnlySimchas – big deal 🙂
squeakParticipantI am makpid on Cholov Yisroel. I do not drink plain milk unless it is Cholov Yisroel.
Hard cheese and butter are an exception, as brought down in Pischei Halacha.
Those who are not makpid on Cholov Yisroel do drink plain milk without a hechsher, as you said.
squeakParticipantThere are two issues that need to be bifurcated.
(1) g’vinas akkum – no supervision at all
(2) cheese that has a hechsher but allows chalav stam (e.g. OU-D)
My personal practice is to keep cholov yisroel, except for butter and hard cheese, as is brought down in Pischei Halacha. However, I would not buy a cheese or butter that did not have a hechsher on it at all. IOW, The milk that is used as an input may be chalav stam, but the end product proves that it was kosher milk (since it became cheese or butter), and the process is certified by a kosher agency to ensure that there are no “other” inputs.
The only food I am aware of that we still consume without any supervision of the process is alcoholic beverages (beer, whiskey, etc)

I don’t want to be responsible for shaking up your marriage, but I am seeing a different perspective in your story. Perhaps she married you because you did not know, and not despite the fact. You see, she always wanted to change her eye color, but never knew what you would think of it. Therefore, when you said you did not know, she was able to run out and get the color-changing lenses she always wanted and pretend that it was her eye color all along.
Check the lens case next time you get a chance and let us know.
🙂
squeakParticipantoomis, NO! I just warned Wolf.
But don’t worry about the hue and cry- since you and Wolf are different genders, they won’t be able to pursue both of you at once 🙂
squeakParticipantLet me help you. I’ll post a deleted post for this thread, and then you can do the same. Here it is:

squeakParticipantI wasn’t talking to you, Wolf.
I was talking to the Wolf who posted just before you.
🙂
squeakParticipantExcuses? No, we plainly were looking for some juicy deleted posts. The least you could have done was oblige us.
squeakParticipantThose who underestimate the power of the dark side are doomed to fall to it.
Is that an exact quote?
squeakParticipantWolf, you should know better than to say that here. Should I raise the hue and cry?
squeakParticipantAw, I thought you were going to post a deleted post 😉
We are testing to see who will open this thread despite its title.
Four so far.
squeakParticipantShe says, “I know you is.”
By chance, is the girl in the first joke the one who wrote the second joke?

squeakParticipanta babe will be born and he will build a cathedral in the bronx. He will smite 60 four baggers in a season and subdue all his enemies. They will call him the sultan of swat and his sale will forever curse those pagan red sox.
That is a mighty fine prophecy to make! But the last part is false, so the entire prophecy is out the window.
I’m guessing this was before the ‘pagans’ beat the curse.
squeakParticipantHelpful,
AHZ refers to even ho’ezer.
squeakParticipantA couple was watching a news report on TV about the importance of having a living will. The man turns to his wife and says, “Please promise me that if I am ever dependent on nothing but machines and bottled fluids to keep me alive, you will take action and put an end to it right away.”
So his obedient wife stands up and unplugs the TV, then takes his beer and pours it down the drain.
August 13, 2010 5:04 pm at 5:04 pm in reply to: Fermat's Last Theorem – with a grain of salt #696220squeakParticipantPY-
I think there is a simple answer to that. Anyone familiar with mathematics knows that as you start to fiddle with higher orders, things get more – not less – complicated.
Fermat may have toyed with hundreds of 3rd and 4th order equations to see if he could find a counter-example. There is no way to know how much time he spent trying out possibilities. After that it is no great leap to assume that there won’t be any solutions in higher order equations, either. Not rock-solid proof, but very sound mathematical reasoning.

August 13, 2010 4:34 pm at 4:34 pm in reply to: Fermat's Last Theorem – with a grain of salt #696217squeakParticipantI’d bet Fermat himself knew the proof was shoddy, which is why he made up an excuse to not write it.
Not every truth can be proven formally or elegantly. I could prove that, but my word count for this post is almost up.

Wolf, I agree except for the child at play. The world NEEDS 15,000,213 pictures of my children smiling.
So that’s 7,500,106 of one child, and 7,500,107 of the other. No favorites, of course? 🙂

You mean battery. Assault is the crime of threatening violence. Battery is the crime of inflicting actual violence.
squeakParticipantHmph. I for one, am not feeling very welcome today.

(And at advanced levels of yoga it is upside-down, bent sideways, and indescribably contorted too)
squeakParticipantI just read an article on Cicada Killer Wasps (enormous things that are starting to pop up all over), and I thought they were impressive (and thread-worthy). I checked this forum to make sure it hadn’t already been posted, and found this thread. Wow, this wasp is far more mind-boggling.
