whats with the recent board trend of “deal with it”?
When I see someone use that phrase on the “molesters” thread, I’ll be bothered by it. But when it’s applied here I think it’s appropriate.

squeakParticipantFunny, I heard the same joke a few years back. But on the first day the girl said the cats were Republican, and the second day said they were Democrats. It wasn’t funny that way, either.
squeakParticipantI guess you won. I’m just hoping that no one registers a name that long, or all the posts will be pushed off the right hand side of my screen 8D
squeakParticipantWolf-
The “s” in “doors” was an unfortunate typo.
There were blinds in mine. I guess that was one of the redecorations that the owner of the villa I stayed in did (I found out that each villa is privately owned, and are not necessarily identical).
And they proved quite useful, as I needed them drawn when the sun came in in the morn.
BTW, the Chabad rabbi says on his website that he will kasher your kitchen for $50. I didn’t, but I think that would make a big difference to some people.
squeakParticipantA few thoughts:
1- Did you consider a wood burning stove, or wood pellet burning stove instead of oil/gas? Wood is a renewable heating resource.
2- If your oil tank is in the ground- when you decommission your oil tank, consider removing it entirely instead of filling it with sand. Leaving it in the ground could lead to ground water contamination when the tank corrodes, and later- possibly, collapse.
3- I can’t recommend a specific gas system, but a home energy expert told me that there are systems with incredible efficiency. He said (he might have been exaggerating) that if your system is more than 4 years old it is stone-age in relative efficiency. Sounds like it was worthwhile to wait until 82 years instead of 78 🙂

What “hotel” was that- or was it a hostel? I see hotels that are ‘on the cheap’ but nothing as low as you paid.
squeakParticipantDidnt we agree that mixed swimming is assur? Why do you keep encuraging it?
To be perfectly fair, you can’t say he is encouraging mixed swimming. The pool is private – meaning that it is enclosed by a fence, and with the entrance from the villa. The windows and doors that open to the pool have blinds that can be drawn so that men and women (who are staying together in the villa) can swim separately.

Yes, low spending habits- not low income. Har har.

November 1, 2010 9:18 pm at 9:18 pm in reply to: Molesters: Why Do Some In Our Community Cover For Them? #711738squeakParticipantPBA- point is, I don’t give a rats blech about culpability. If an animal bites, it gets put down- and it is no less blameless than a human who does evil. I’m not interested in villifying the criminal, just in getting rid of him (or her- that happens too) effectively.
What do I think the level of blame is? Somewhat higher than a behema, but perhaps(!) less than 100%. Circumstances do lead to choices.
Moq- no, I do not believe in “internal investigation first”. But I am realistic- we are still living in shtetls. You and I will not convince the yeshivish velt that the government will “treat them fairly”. THEREFORE, I am willing to look the other way to our community’s tendency to treat due process as “the arm of the enemy state” – SO LONG AS they handle the situation satisfactorily.

It also helps if the “s” kind of whistles through your teeth (if you have any) while you’re saying it. It should sound like “shunny”.

November 1, 2010 8:33 pm at 8:33 pm in reply to: Molesters: Why Do Some In Our Community Cover For Them? #711730squeakParticipantPBA- How could it be me, if I didn’t have the “bad experiences” as a child? Even if I chose to do evil, it wouldn’t work because I had a wonderful youth.
The right thing to do is to do a full and thorough investigation. No expense spared, no rocks left unturned. This is the way to uncover the truth (as best we humans can), if done by experts. So we need to bring in expertise on every case, or develop our own.
I’m not against a lynching for these menuvalim. I’m sorry if you are revolted by my revulsion. We all have taivos and opportunities, but only the scum of the earth take advantage of these opportunities at the expense of making another person (child!) a victim for life.
squeakParticipantPBA- you seem to describe Moderates (or Centrists) as the “donkeys” who walk in the middle of the road. I don’t think that’s the case. Moderates have positions, some of them associated with those on the left of the aisle, and some associated with those on the right. To say they lack passion for their beliefs is disingenuous.
I believe that the reason moderates never get anywhere is because the vast majority of the voting populace is a victim of the two-party system. Most people will define themselves as “Republican” or “Democrat”, or “Conservative” or “Liberal”. Then, being so defined, their stand on issues is decided by those who head the respective party. IOW, once you’ve said you’re a “Republican” or “Conservative”, you automatically like Ronnie Reagan, supply-side economics, growing your nuclear arsenal, and hate stem-cell research, most governement programs, and Oprah. All that without understanding any of the issues or even having lived through the relevant time period.
In a nutshell, the problem is that people tend not to think independently on issues, but lump all issues together and follow a party line. What chance does a Moderate have- he/she is going to be on the wrong side of about half the important issues for ALL voters.
You can’t beat the system, two-party politics is here to stay. Which means there is really no choice in elections, it’s just a rotation from one set of issues to the other, based on voter dissatisfaction over the last elected official.
The only way to get a Moderate in is to have him/her be a closet Moderate. Run as a vehement Democrat, or a staunch Republican, and then flip flop on every issue once in office.

November 1, 2010 7:48 pm at 7:48 pm in reply to: Molesters: Why Do Some In Our Community Cover For Them? #711724squeakParticipantaries, you are correct about needing someone with expertise and training to handle these situations. If we were as serious about taking care of these people in the correct way as we are about keeping the whole thing quiet, we would be sending a few “of our own” into the field to get training so that they would be available to “us” to handle “ours” quietly.
November 1, 2010 7:38 pm at 7:38 pm in reply to: Molesters: Why Do Some In Our Community Cover For Them? #711721squeakParticipantPBA-
No, it would not disturb me to find that in the Olam Ho’emes things are quite different from how we see things down here. In fact, we are told to expect this is the truth.
However, I don’t think that this means we should be trying to figure out how Heaven will deal with such people. We have the obligation to deal with them in the way that seems correct based on our limited understanding, guided by Torah principles. If we act correctly, Heaven can right our errors. If the man does not have the status of Shoita, we will not make excuses for his misbehavior.

November 1, 2010 6:20 pm at 6:20 pm in reply to: NY-LA via Coach Bus, only one seat left on each #785730squeakParticipantI did live in Brooklyn, but not for too long (how could anyone live there too long?).
Anyway, you are essentially agreeing with my point. For 50 or 60K you can own as much muscle as you’d ever realistically be able to use. That amount of cash is not so unattainable for middle class folk. (Imagine a girl who works but lives with her parents because she isn’t married yet. A year of savings could buy one shiny black Vette – not red, of course – and completely turn the tables on the shidduch crisis).
BPTotty- maybe you and I will take a spin there one day. Do they allow day memberships?

The fact of the matter is that if you were a man and had been molested, you would very likely be a molester now.
…you should cry for the molester, and say, “there, but for the grace of G-d, go I”.
PBA- it’s so rare for you to say something seriously, that I wish I didn’t have to disagree with you so strongly when you do.
Just because some clown came up with a catchy, philosphical, and politically correct phrase for not looking down on anyone in the world (even Al Capone, right?), does not make it a valid philosophy.
Amend it as follows: There, but for the grace of G-d and A LIFETIME OF BAD CHOICES, go I.
A person does bad because he chooses to do bad. He may be inclined to evil for a number of reasons, but in the end he can still choose to turn away from evil. Do not claim that you or I would make similar bad choices in the event that we had lived through the same circumstances.
November 1, 2010 5:07 pm at 5:07 pm in reply to: NY-LA via Coach Bus, only one seat left on each #785725squeakParticipantYou’ve got to admit, some muscle cars serve no purpose at all (except to show off- and all you’re showing off is how much money you sank on your car). Anything you can do with your Lambo/Maser/Ferrari/Porsche on public roads, I can do with a Vette or even a Camaro. Ok, you’d beat me out of a light by a fraction of a millisecond, but beyond that you never get to USE any of the vast available power*.
If you’ve got private roads and a private track, fine, that’s different. Go drive as fast as you can in circles.
*Note: I recall a famous political figure was asked about his Ferrari by reporters (assuming that they were cornering him into admitting to breaking traffic laws with it). His clever reply was to the effect of “the law may be you can’t drive faster than 65mph, but it doesn’t say how quickly you can get up to that speed out of a tollbooth”. Nevertheless, the difference between a Ferrari and a Vette in this regard is modest. The price difference is not.
squeakParticipantThe screen names are getting longer and longer, and the posts are moving almost off the end the page. Let’s have a competition- who can come up with the longest screen name. It has to be misspelled and full of texting shorthand.

The wagon may have been a one time thing. I’ve been back to that area since then, but haven’t seen it.
squeakParticipantI haven’t read this thread. I imagine there are some good reasons and silly reasons on both sides of the argument. But you can pray for tzahal with or without the mishebeirach. November 1, 2010 4:20 pm at 4:20 pm in reply to: Please Be Cautious With Whom You Entrust Your Children To! #705954squeakParticipantWolf, nanny cams are like insurance. You hope that you won’t need them, and most times you may not. But they are still worth having for the “other” scenarios.
squeakParticipantWolf- I meant to thank you for that. A while ago, I went there on your recommendation. Same hotel (they’ve remodeled many of the units).
squeakParticipantWe’ve had this question before (slightly differently).
And I feel a bit let down about the Venn diagrams. Clearly you were able to use Bayesian formulas to solve the problem, but I wanted to see the diagrams (for two reasons: I have no idea how you would get them into a post and because I have no idea how you could use them to solve the problem)

squeakParticipantEnjoy, ladies. The comparisons would be very different for guys 🙂
squeakParticipantpopa, it’s your age that’s in question here. Oomis and I have long ago showed our colors. I know you seem to be young, but when you get ninja’d by old fogies it makes me concerned. And drinking doesn’t get harder with old age, believe me- it only gets harder to STOP 😉
Oomis is right, 3M is a good company, you can’t go wrong with their product.
If you’re drinking scotch, though, you want to pay for it. Because if you’re going to go cheap, you’re not going to get aged. And if you don’t get aged, you might as well drink bourbon instead. Or beer. Neither one has the horrible bite of young scotch.
squeakParticipantIf you’re looking for warmth this time of year, you won’t find that in Idaho. That said, there are plenty of wonderful warm destinations that are far less crowded than Florida, and no more expensive.
If you’re looking for alternative destinations, just ask.
squeakParticipantUnless you extract your own juice, I doubt you’ve ever had single orange orange juice. If you’re getting Tropicana, you’ve been drinking blended orange juice all this time without realizing.
squeakParticipantThe whiskey explains it. Although I’d have to have about half a bottle before I’d take the first bite of that concoction 🙂

October 29, 2010 5:30 pm at 5:30 pm in reply to: The difference between renting movies and a tv #704974squeakParticipantYou can’t argue from both sides of the fence. If having an internet enabled computer is OK because of the clean and harmless content, then once you admit a TV has some clean and harmless content you’re stuck. You can’t be selective if you use that logic.
If you stick with what you said originally, that TV has NO clean content, you are consistent. But then others can say that they find clean and harmless content and you can argue no further.
October 29, 2010 5:12 pm at 5:12 pm in reply to: The difference between renting movies and a tv #704960squeakParticipantIf that is the crux of the debate then none of these people would have internet either. Because a computer connected to the internet has everything that a TV has, plus more. There is the same sewage in your cable connection whether the device on your end is a TV or a PC.
squeakParticipantronrsr-

October 29, 2010 4:27 pm at 4:27 pm in reply to: The difference between renting movies and a tv #704944squeakParticipantOh, and to answer the OP, renting a TV probably costs a lot more and is much more difficult to carry.
October 29, 2010 4:21 pm at 4:21 pm in reply to: Rav Moshe Feinstein: Prohibition of social dating #705706squeakParticipantCorrection: I said “your situation is akin to #2”. I meant it may be akin to #2.
October 29, 2010 4:19 pm at 4:19 pm in reply to: Rav Moshe Feinstein: Prohibition of social dating #705705squeakParticipantWolf, let me try two more comparisons.
1- Paul has 2 brothers. His parents have left a large inheritance to all their children, and Paul doesn’t want to share. He kills his brothers, and legally inherits all the money (legally inherits, because he is never charged with the deaths).
He has the money legitimately, but came by it in the wrong manner. In this case, charata on the murders would probably be insufficient- the money he has is tainted. I would probably agree that he should burn/give away the money to be a true penitant.
2- James is looking for work as a mechanic. He has no experience and no training, so he makes up experience on his resume and bluffs through interviews. But James has some natural talent for working with cars and is never found out, his work is just as good as any reputable mechanic. After a year on the job, he wants to do tshuva for the manner in which he got the job.
He apologizes to his boss for lying his way in. But he does not regret the good work he has done, nor does he wish to lose his job. He just wishes that he had gotten the job without lying, i.e. either that he had been able to get the training and experience to apply honestly, or that he had told the truth and gotten the job anyway.
Your situation is akin to #2. If you think it is akin to #1 then I disagree with your assessment.
squeakParticipantI says stop
October 29, 2010 3:54 pm at 3:54 pm in reply to: The difference between renting movies and a tv #704939squeakParticipantHelpful, in the last 30 years? I can think of plenty. There have always been movies that crossed the line, but the line was much clearer in the 80s- i.e. gratuity was carefully avoided in certain genres. I can remember the director of one particular movie talking about how he glued the clothes onto his actors and actresses for a scene that involved rolling across the ground to ensure that the clothing did not ride up on film.
squeakParticipantchad pami, chada m’turetz b’chaverta. Hashem said not to be worried about Hagar, so Avraham was not worried. Hashem also said not to be worried about Yishmael, but he was anyway, which is a lesson in chinuch bonim.

October 29, 2010 3:16 pm at 3:16 pm in reply to: Rav Moshe Feinstein: Prohibition of social dating #705696squeakParticipantYour comparison is invalid, because the swindler is an unlawful owner. There is nothing unlawful about a kosher marriage itself, despite how the two people got there. A truer comparison might be a person who became a talmid chochom by stealing seforim and/or copyrighted shiurim. He is a talmid chochom, but he must make amends for the means by which he acquired the knowledge. In doing so, he is not regretting being a scholar.
Let’s agree to disagree on this.
