Why would it be Lucy? I would expect that she is red haired. Am I right, Charlie?
squeakParticipantJoseph – when I read your post, I saw you quote the Chasam Sofer in the second paragraph without mentioning where exactly. Now I went back and I saw that in the next paragraphs you wrote likuttim 31 and 32. So I guess I can find it myself. Thanks.
squeakParticipantI have worn many hats in my time…
squeakParticipantTo the one who quoted (second hand or less) from R’ Dovid Cohen, please ask him yourself. I believe that what you repeated is different from what he originally said. The integrity of the information decreases exponentially with each transmission.
I believe that the source for maaser kesafim is “Asser Ta’asser” in Parshas Re’ah. (Asser Ba’avur she’Tisasher)It is not deoraisa but the practice is learned out based on the possuk. I was taught to consider the chiyuv as a business partnership with Hashem. 10% of what you earn goes to your Partner. As such, expenses related to earning the money are deducted from the total earnings to be divided. I never heard of deducting other expenses such as rent/mortgage and insurance. If a Rov says so, go ahead, but find out if he really did say so.
As far as what ma’aser money can be spent on, I know that there are many, many different ways to pasken. Answering this question is pretty useless on this forum because of the variance between poskim. Ask yours. (for example, rob mentioned buying seforim. I have heard from different Rabbonim that you may, you may not, AND that you may but only if you buy it for a public bookshelf. So what value is there to tell you how MY Rov paskened?)
squeakParticipantTrue charlie brown. But I’m sure that if I were a moderator my number would not have been 72. Anyway, I don’t feel like a moderator. Maybe an editor….
squeakParticipantMay I suggest that mini-donuts can be used to fill the aforementioned chiyuv. <Name of a Lakewood store that sells donuts deleted> sells mini donuts. 11 should be no problem. Hatzlocho!
squeakParticipant1968 is what google says too. And as I said in the other thread, I know that I am asking for age jokes, so I am not offended when I get them.
I remember the same story as you do, though I still haven’t checked if All Summer in a Day is its title. I remember the moral well, though I didn’t realize it was set on a real planet. I thought it was a fictitious one in a different solar system.
squeakParticipantWelcome Mod42 (I already welcomed you in another thread but it bears repeating here). I look forward to the next million or so years that you will spend pondering my Question.
May I suggest that the next new moderator assume the number 17, in honor of the Humbug?
squeakParticipantI don’t remember!
(and I doubt that the mods or editor can track it easily either because 99% of the time I sit behind an IP firewall that rotates addresses with hundreds of other users. Sort of like how asdfghjkl uses technology to bounce his IP off a server in Ireland and fool the mods into thinking he is actually there) (PS, mods – if you can track me, there’s no need to prove it. I will believe you can if you say so).
squeakParticipantMazal, have no fear – the economy will recover. The details might be new this time, but the situation has been here before many times. Ain chodosh tachas hashemesh. Trust the old timers, who have seen it all before. The magic word is “cycle”.
May you one day be zoche to be an old timer and cluck knowingly at such statements.
However, what you said about trusting Hashem is true. And if you or others learn this from your gut feelings about the current economic state, then you have gained tremendously and hopefully it will stay with you when the “fat” years return.
squeakParticipantHow much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
A) More than a beaver
B) The same as a beaver
C) Less than a beaver
D) All of the above
E) Not enough information given to answer the question

“I think he is conflicted between his British residency and his American thinking. “
American Thinking? Is that what impression I give??? I’ve never touched American soil believe it or not. It’s definitely on my agenda though!
American soil? What is that? Of course you have never touched American soil – you couldn’t even if you had been to visit the colonies. I shall report you to Her Highness.
American soil, indeed.
squeakParticipantOr, certain parts of the Bronx (such as Co-op City). But I imagine that my first guess was right.
squeakParticipantManhattan.
squeakParticipantMod, you are a gem. Maivin Dovor Mi’Toich Dovor – your talents are wasted here!
squeakParticipantICOT – you read Space Odessey when you were 9? And here I was thinking that you were close to my age! You are a spring chicken!
Anyway, I am sure glad that it didn’t come out when I was nine because there is not much that such a book can offer to such a young person. In fact, in my opinion the book has nothing to offer to a person of any age. I did enjoy a few of Clarks’ stort stories.
I nevered warmed to Bradbury’s style either. And I tried quite a few of his. But Asimov did manage to make his tales interesting and readable, and I’ve enjoyed many of his stories (short and long, including all 6 Foundation books, though the 3 outliers were not worthy).
Is All Summer in a Day the one about the planet that rains constantly?

squeakParticipantHi, my name is squeak. <pause>
I have had 2 anger free weeks thanks to your support. The other day I was about to get angry at the guy who cut in front of me at the checkout line, but then I decided to just deduct the time I lost from the time I would have spent on CR and I avoided an incident.
Thanks for listening.
Anyone else have something to share?
squeakParticipantJoseph – can you please cite where in the Chasam Sofer I can find the reason you gave for nittel nacht? I am referring to the statement you made about not learning due to aveilus from the birth of oiso hoish. I find it hard to believe that that is really a reason given by a halachic authority.
(I have always thought that this reason was made up by one yeshiva bochur who did not know the history of nittel nacht. It is doubtful that Dec 25th was his actual birthday – especially since the calendar changed so many times in the last 2000 years. Plus, to abolish learning due to his birth is surprising, not to mention that if it is truly due to aveilus it should continue the entire next day. But there is no need for me to expound on why I think it is not really a reason – if you can point me to where it is stated I will accept it.)
As a side point, I can see a couple of reasons not to mention the rosho’s name.
1) It is used as a swear word
2) Christ means Moshiach. By calling him Christ you are buying into their belief (albeit a minor problem with their religion – if they only thought that he was moshiach it wouldn’t be avoda zora.)
squeakParticipantI stand corrected. A future MIL (BE”H).
squeakParticipantWhere Verizon has invested in a Fiber Optic System (FiOS).
squeakParticipantYoshi – do you run backwards down the basepaths?
squeakParticipantIf you live in a FiOS area, you can’t get DSL and the cost is about the same.
squeakParticipantThank you Esther, you have just given away your identity as a MIL.
squeakParticipantSo you don’t buy into the “All mods are one” conspiracy theory? It could be that Mod 42 was merely a dormant personality of The moderator, which recently emerged. Or 72, who always has enough time on his hands to fix commas, finally picked up the Guide and became a fan overnight. Or it could be that someone who was begging for a mod job in the other thread just got their wish. You can’t really know.
BTW, mod, I believe that the Babel fish was named AFTER Babel was destroyed, hence its name.
squeakParticipantDon’t worry about me. Every time I feel panic coming, I just look at the big block letters on my Guide.
For your next trick, can you change that regular fish to a Babel one? I don’t mind if it holds up your answer – I don’t really expect to be around for it anyway.
squeakParticipantA guy brings his dog into the vet and says, “Could you please cut my dog’s tail off?” The vet examines the tail and says, “There is nothing wrong. Why would you want this done?” The man replies, “My Mother in law is coming to visit, and I don’t want anything in the house to make her think that she is welcome!”
Comment: Of course, it was a seeing-eye dog.

Two women came before wise King Shlomo, dragging between them a young man. “This young man agreed to marry my daughter,” said one. “No! He agreed to marry MY daughter,” said the other. And so they haggled before the king, until he called for silence. “Bring me my biggest sword,” said Shlomo, ” and I shall hew the young man in half. Each of you shall receive a half.” “Sounds good to me,” said the first lady. But the other woman said, “Oh Sire, do not spill innocent blood. Let the other woman’s daughter marry him.” The wise king did not hesitate a moment. “This man must marry the first lady’s daughter,” he proclaimed. “But she was willing to hew him in two!” exclaimed the king’s court. “Indeed,” said wise King Shlomo. “That shows she is the TRUE mother-in-law!”

squeakParticipantA foolish comparison if I ever heard one. Even in jest.
squeakParticipantYAY! There is a moderator 42!!!!
Can I guess that your real name is Deep Thought?
squeakParticipantOh it makes a big difference! If you have ABS and you pump the brakes, the ABS program does not kick in. Basically, you are shutting off the computer and saying that you can pump the brakes better yourself (but you can’t).
If you have ABS, press down hard and let the computer pump for you. But braking is not always the best way to regain control…..
squeakParticipantABS = anti-lock braking system
With this feature, the brakes will “pump” automatically. The pedal will pulsate against your foot. This causes some people to ease off the brake, but you should just hold tight. If you do, the car can stop up to 20% faster than without the feature.
Without ABS, the brakes can lock and the tires may stop spinning before the vehicle stops moving. This is dangerous (in an uncontrolled skid) because you have no control over the car from this point on.
You lose the ability to do some trick driving with ABS, but most people wouldn’t do those stunts anyway.
There are ways to learn how to react in a skid – many of them are counterintuitive. If possible, try to learn what to do and practice it (in an empty parking lot, please). I’m glad I did.
squeakParticipantBeen away for a while. Looks like the idea of an anonymous live get together is dead.
squeakParticipantObviously not 🙂
squeakParticipantAn avid fan of zoos? give me a break 🙂 – how can you support places that imprison close family members?
squeakParticipantyou both made the same mistake!?
squeakParticipantI know that we were all taught that the Jews during the times of Chanuka played dreidel to hide the fact that they were learning Torah from the authorities. The origin of the minhag to play on Chanuka these days is dubious, but that is one possibiliy.
Nittel nacht, at least from what I know, was a night that Jews kept a low profile because to be seen not celebrating was likely to provoke attacks. People would not kindle any light in their home and in general just go to sleep early (or stay awake davening in the dark and worrying about their families tucked in bed). Nothing to do with cards.
There are plenty of online resources that deal directly with the question of why we play on Chanuka (I just searched) but all seem to agree that there is no concrete “source” for the minhag except that it is practiced. If you want to play for money, you might consider asking a shaila on that. But if you want to play on Chanuka for no money there should be no problem (in my mind; read on for mention of others’).
As I briefly mentioned in my previous post, some are concerned about the “slippery slope” when it comes to playing or learning gambling games. One thing leads to another and poof – one day a person could Ch”V become a real gambler. Everyone has to know themselves and if you think this may be a problem you should take it seriously.
As far as I know, unless one has a tendency to become a gambler the problem is asmachta (what I described above) and if there is no money involved there should be no problem. Some authorities may be more lenient but for leniencies you better ask your own shaila 😉
squeakParticipantSo the kosel was a question, but the Rebbes are definitely OK?
Regarding cards (which is what is really meant in this case), I am not aware of a prohibition specifically relating to the mode of gambling, rather only the gambling itself.
The halacha assumes that one only puts the money into the pot so as to qualify for winning the pot. Had he known that he would not win he would have not put the money in to begin with. Therefore it is stealing from the losers (who regret their bets) everytime you win.
Unless someone knows of another reason, I see nothing wrong with playing for chips and glory only (no money involved). Some people may say not to learn gambling games, but I personally don’t hold that is a problem.
There are exceptions for the laws of ribis when dealing with one’s immediate family (wife, children) and I always thought that there might be a tsu shtel to gambling – but I never asked a shaila on it, so I don’t know if I’m right.
squeakParticipantNo, but a Chanuka party sounds good!
December 12, 2008 3:26 pm at 3:26 pm in reply to: Looking For a Mamar Chazal About Cosmetics #635069squeakParticipantJoseph – your words are true. But my point is valid for both men and women. Putting other people down is something that makes you look bad. You will find this out for yourself if you do this; hence my advice – DON’T find out for yourself (i.e. only say positive things about other people)!
squeakParticipant42 makes sense. But only because I understand the question.
squeakParticipantYou guys are treading thin ice here…. This thread is about ready to be closed for the crime of repeating posts in two threads. We already have a riddle thread – this thread was supposed to be for random questions, like “Why is the sky blue?” and “Why is the Pope always a Catholic?” etc.
squeakParticipantJoseph – believe it or not, I went there too.

December 11, 2008 6:09 pm at 6:09 pm in reply to: Looking For a Mamar Chazal About Cosmetics #635052squeakParticipantYou must learn to own up to what you say. Intelligence will not always enable you to turn the tables (certainly not this time!).
I refer you back to the following two statements:
1) “according to oomis, some people NEED make up (which I agree with)”
2) “people who have white skin must wear foundation to look decent“
Methinks there be a good number of folk who look plenty decent all the time. That’s just my opinion. You may have higher standards for who you are willing to acknowledge looks decent, but that’s just your own thinking. Don’t spread it.
That set me off. I admit that after that I got on the soap box about this type of perception in general. But it was directed at you because your statement made me think that you belong to the group that “sets standards” and tries to enforce them on others.
—-
I’d just like to add a piece of wisdom that you may not have yet come across. People in general (and men especially) who hear you putting down the looks of others easily will quickly find YOU unattractive. Don’t find this out for yourself.
All the best.
squeakParticipantSJS – we all have much to learn.
December 11, 2008 5:53 pm at 5:53 pm in reply to: What To Do While Waiting For The Coffee Room To Be Updated #1192577squeakParticipantWell, Joseph could better answer the question because he uses it for this site (and I don’t). But basically, if you have an RSS reader, you can subscribe to blogs and the like and be notified when they update.
If you click the link “RSS feed for this topic” (at the bottom of every thread above the reply box) you will see the feed – XML code that your reader will translate for your reading pleasure. When a thread is updated, YW releases a new XML and your reader downloads it and can notify you.
squeakParticipantIn all fairness, brooklyn19 is a newbie. She can’t be on the list yet. So are you.
Proud to make the list. I have my busy seasons and my off ones. During my busy times you won’t hear from me at all. During my slow times I enjoy the back and forth with the good people of this site. I’m not on any other site (anymore. though you could dig up lots of stuff by me going back to before some of you were born)
