Anything is possible…but in my humble opinion it is probably a lack of ahavat yisrael that is causing the delay of the Mashiach.
While it is a zechut to do many mitzvot, we don’t know what makes one mitzva more difficult for another individual. Maybe she was tired from whatever she was doing, or could not really afford to make her mishloach manot the way she wanted to…Or maybe she had other things going on in her life that would make this mitzva a burdensome one for whatever reason.
Bottom line–the way a person does a mitzva is between him/her and God.

There is no problem with the land of Israel. There is a problem with feeling safe while we are still in a spiritual exile. Israel is our land, but the complete presence of God is not with us now.

Is it really the segulah that brings about the result, or is it the faith behind the segulah that causes it?
I think that segulot may cause a person to believe in the power that God has, and from his belief he might get what he is desiring.
What if a segulah does not work? Does that mean that it has no power or does it mean that God said no?

NY Mom, I never thought of having snaps added between buttons. I usually just wear a cami under blouses that don’t stay closed.

If this is the place to get support for trying to be tzniut, I have something to share. I know my size and I usually just buy clothes without trying them on, but today I actually tried on a dress to see if it will reach my knees. It was so pretty. Yet short. 🙁 And I didn’t buy it. I don’t plan on getting it. But it was so pretty. 🙁 I’ve bought short dresses in the past and added material to the bottom, but this wouldn’t work with the style of the dress. I really liked it. 🙁
Fruit and vegetables are great to snack on. (Limit the fruits if you are a diabetic). Drink a lot of water too.
Don’t go for the diet drinks, fads or any other stupid nonsense. Oh, and don’t forget, carbs are NOT your enemy.
These teenaged boys will grow up and they will be exposed to things worse than what they see on the bus.
Instead of making the bus or train taboo and not allowing them to go on it, it might be a better idea to teach your children self control.
Teach them that it is impolite to stare and teach them that sometimes they will come across things that are not appropriate to look at and when that happens they should remember that they are above that.
Teaching them to take charge of their actions will help them more in life than teaching them that everything is bad and that normal everyday things should be avoided.
You won’t be able to shelter them their whole life, and by not allowing them to go on the bus because they might see soemthing they shouldn’t will just cripple them.

Everyone already has avatars. They are the same for everyone and blend into the background of the page perfectly so you can’t even see them 🙂

Charred meats have carcinogens in them.
As do meats with nitrates.
And cakes and cookies with saturated fats may have potential carcinogens.
Pesticides that are sprayed on produce may have carcinogens.
We live in the best of times, and the worst of times.
We probably should all go organic and live a green life. The only problem would be, the way we pollute our lungs just by walking outside.

Isn’t there a Jewish saying “Chochma bagoyim ta’amin; Torah bagoyim al ta’amin” or something like that? I would take the quote I wrote as “chochma” and not as “Torah”.

Just-a-guy, I never studied the Rambam’s teachings, but that probably is the highest form of tzedaka to give a person. Not only are you giving them the ability to support themselves, you are also giving them pride (in a good way) and the opportunity to be able to give to others too.

Some of the very wealthy people that I know did not go to college and basically own real estate and businesses for a living, but very few can get that far without money to start with, and in today’s market the only way to get money legally is to get a high paying job which can only be gotten with the right credentials. (Or to inherit it.) There are so many programs today that help Jewish men and women attain degrees without even going to a regular college or university, that it’s a shame that more people don’t take advantage of the opportunities. They can even get financial aid from the government to help them pay for school, assuming we are talking about low to no income families.

See how he treats his mama and what he does when he gets upset (like if a waiter messed up an order or somebody takes his parking spot…). Does he always tell you where you’re going on a date, or does he want your input? Trust your instincts, but don’t judge people solely on them.

NYMom, being someone whose strong point is not tzniut, I still don’t find the word offensive in any way.
I don’t love the stories posted at all. Especially the first one. I think that scaring anybody into doing anything is just wrong. How do we know that the story is true? Does anybody personally know this person? What bothers me more, is if the girl changed herself to become a “better” person, then why was she not saved? Also, who are we to decide God’s reasons for doing something? How do we know that her hair was burnt as a punishment? Is everything in life punishment and reward? If so, then why doesn’t a person get rewarded just as often as they are punished?

B)That she is stylish, trendy, casual, sophisticated…depends on the skirt. Dressing is not ALWAYS about religion. My point is that wearing a skirt that may be considered not tzniut to someone else is not a way of branding yourself as an untzniut woman.
C)I did not complain. I just stated a fact.
D)It’s okay.
It’s obvious that people look at others differently. I may look at a woman and see her style, or lack of it, and others may only see her clothing as tzniut or not. Some people think they are the fashion police, and others, the tzniut police.

Amen to your new gezerah: “Women should not be looking at other women: at how they dress, what kind of sheitel they have on, what kind of make up they wear, their shoes, their bodies.” I think that sometimes it’s jealousy that makes some women hate the way that others dress. They may be jealous that somebody else looks good, or they may be jealous that somebody else is dressed in clothing they wish they could wear themselves. Or maybe tzniut is not one of their harder struggles (or maybe it’s one that they’ve overcome), and they can’t understand how somebody else could dress in a standard that is below theirs. Either way, I’m not sure that this obsession that some religious people have with others’ tzniut is very healthy, both for their physical and spiritual health.

I’ve never heard of a set amount of money that a person must give to a shadchan or shadchanit. In my circles, if somebody makes a shidduch for a couple, the couple buys the person a nice gift.

A) Don’t tell me to chill out. I’m cooler than an ice cream bar.
B) Yes, clothes make the man. We absolutely do portray who we are with our clothing. That still does not mean that that is all that we are. A woman who is wearing something more revealing than what you are comfortable with is still a “bat melech”. She may shine in other areas than tzniut. Tzniut is not the only thing that makes a Jewish woman special. We have other special mitzvot. (Challah, Shabbat candles and taharat hamishpachah, to name a few.)
C) I’ll read and comment on whatever thread I want to.

Yes, Mepal. He will. But He will also be looking at us the way that we look at others. So if we look and judge harshly “What a #$%&*! How could she wear that? etc…”, then we are putting ourselves in a position where God forbid, we may be judged more harshly too.
This topic has been chewed to death, here, there and everywhere.
Who are we to judge how others dress? Do we want God to judge us on our flaws? Just because the way that somebody dresses is not tzanua according to you and yours, does not mean that it is worse than your discussion of them?
Have you ever thought that that woman (or man) with the short/tight skirt or whatever article of clothing–or lack of–that she (or he) is wearing, is working on other midot or mitzvot? Maybe she (or he) is perfecting her (or his) sh’mirat shabbat, kashrut or a mitzvah that is ben adam lechavero?
If all of our sins were visible and magnified like the issues of tzniut are, I’m sure that those who are doing the discussing, judging and condemning will have flaws of their own, exposed for all to see. Just because one’s flaw is more obvious than another’s, does not mean that it is worse. And the fact that one’s weak point may be tzniut, does not give you or me permission to discuss their shortcomings.
Nobody here is a tzaddik or tzadeket. We all have to work on ourselves. I may need to add a few inches to my skirt and top, and somebody else may need to work on their yirat shamayim, mitzvot of ben adam lechavero and the practice of being dan lekaf zechut (all of which I should work on too).
Just one more thing, please. The shells under dresses. For the love of God, give people a break!!! It’s hard enough to keep tzniut as it is, and I can’t even believe that people would say that wearing a shell under a sleeveless dress or spaghetti strap one is not tzanua. You’re choking people. Literally.
