“aye all persons must drastically improve their grammar herein and hereafter”

    or else 😛

    “soliek….!!!”

    ?

“You are allowed to start sentences with ands or buts. It does not automatically create a fragment like your teachers in grade school claim.”

they claim it because many times it does create a fragment as it can just as easily be appended to the previous sentence. what they dont tell you is that sometimes fragment sentences are acceptable when used properly and not always does and but or because at the start of a sentence create a fragment.

oh it be over. for your own sake and the sake of the kids go to the cops–after getting the heck out of there with them. seriously if you have evidence of abuse against him, take them and run. an abusive spouse/parent never gets over it, and never gets better.

I’m teaching someone how to write–someone whose entire knowledge of the English language and its usage comes from an elementary school and GED education, both of which focus heavily on grammar but not enough on theory. So I gave him a book by Stanley fish on writing and he came over to me every minute or so, pointing out various “grammatical errors” like a seemingly misplaced comma, or an ‘and’ at the beginning of a sentence, and I eventually had to explain all this to him and tell him to chuck everything that his prior education had taught him regarding the English language.

well i didnt wanna go into that when i wrote this post because it wasnt he focus but im maskim to what you said. in other words when god closes a door he opens a window…

i mean take my life as an example…also it depends what you see as the challenge in other words in my case it was dealing with a bipolar mother, and in that regard it was too much for me, but then there was another nisayon and that was getting on with my life and that happened because of various other tools that i had such as friends and writing and the internet (mitzvah habaah b’aveirah perhaps…thats a discussion for a different day)

but yeah im maskim to what you said i just didnt have the space to add that in without getting sidetracked

every time i speak to someone there i silently pray for the siyata dishmaya to say the right thing whether its during an english lesson or helping a guy deal with some problems. one wrong word and he could be lost forever. my personal opinion is that what happens at our place is pikuach nefesh and therefore my words could potentially hold the power to give life or take life away. one wrong word and i could set off a chain of events that leads to an overdose chas v’shalom. its terrifying. baruch hashem ive been matzliach so far i think, but all i can do is pray as hard as possible that it continues like that.

i sometimes find myself smiling and laughing at the words that come out of my mouth because i know they arent mine and that i could never in a million years have thought of them myself. all my writing, all my teaching, every time i have any conversation in hashkafah…any time i open my mouth in any meaningful way im amazed at what comes out because i know that the words are not my own and that i can claim no credit for them.

im sorry i forgot. if someone can find it and post it id appreciate it, i remember seeing it. it relates to avraham and his nisyonos and the leviyim being chosen for the avodah because they were not nichshal in the chet ha’egel…if i recall correctly…i could be wrong, and if i am ill gladly change it 🙂

    “Ani maamin b’emuna sh’leima shehaborei yisbarach shemo hu borei umanhig l’chal hab’ruim v’hu l’vado asah oseh v’yaaseh l’chal hamaasim.”

what do those words mean to you? what they should mean, if the dont already, is that God is the creator and overseer of everything. kind of embodies the point of judaism…but your point is an important point to be addressed as it is a common misconception.

many people, from the religious to the irreligious and everything in between has some weird idea that by accepting ol malchus shamayim in theory, they are somehow entitled to everything that they want. it doesnt quite work like that. judaism isnt a benefit club where you pay membership for good deals once a month, identifying as a religious jew doesnt make your or life perfect simply as a result of that identification. its a lifelong process.

someone who asks a question like you asked is clearly lacking in emuna because the question is not like a tefillah where we ask hashem to give us what is best or us, its more of compalaint like “ok…im wearing the velvet on my head, not flipping lights on saturday…wheres my lightning bolt” or “HEY! GOD! WHATS THE HOLDUP!” the alternative being “assuming i get what i want ill believe, assuming i dont im splitting”

and im not judging…emuna and bitachon are lifelong challenges, but the way you’re approaching the problem is a bit off.

Raphael Kaufman: you saw the context of my post, i don’t think i have to explain what i meant. I’m not going to nitpick on finer details because i think you got my point as well.

“I just love those rare moments when things start out with, “Joseph Stalin once said….” lol

    Great first line.”

its all about the first sentence 🙂

the only possible problem i can think of off the top of my head is if hearing it makes you recall the original lyrics and if those are prust then it MIGHT be a problem. again, if you feel so strongly about this why not ask a rav?

DaasYochid: your and everyone else’s raaya rom whisket and beer is invalid because those were categorically paskened on by eminent rabbonim. its not that people stam paskened themselves that these items are categorically kosher…its that they were given a PSAK that these items are categorically kosher

DY: MY LIFE NOW HAS MEANING!!! 😀 and yeah i think i did misuse dearth.

“a) food production was simpler then”

irrelevant…things may have been just as treif

“b) it took a while after things became more problematic for people to realize there was an issue.”

absolutely. im not judging as its not my place

also like i said, and i think you were agreeing, then the moreh heter kind of made sense. now its just plain ridiculous beacause the alternative is so easy

” I am a hypocrite since I eat fruits and vegetables without a hechsher.”

no because your rabbonim have paskaned that fresh fruit is fine as long as it was (according to quite a few) washed and not cut by a knife that is questionable. now that is a majority if not unanimous psak (some debate over which fruits have to be peeled) however those rabbonim (leaving out qualifications for now) who may or may not pskan that one can self paskan on the kashrus of foods based on ingredient labels are a miut sheb’miut and we would follow rov poskim regarding this matter.

It’s very complicated. I’m not the social worker, I’m not a social worker at all, I’m working on a specific case involving P.I.N.S. with a specific kid i teach and there are professionals involved. I’m mamash out of time and its terrifying me. I begged the father to please reconsider, to give me a week more to get things in order but he refused. I got this “case” (it’s not official for me, like I said I’m not a social worker) a week ago and only found out about the P.I.N.S. a week ago. And now we’re scrambling desperately to work things out…

How long does it take, from getting picked up by the cops, until ACS officially opens a case? And from what I read, juvie is a possibility, but not a foregone conclusion. Unless you were referring to the state home for kids…a non-secure facility…

You can’t possibly know what every ingredient in every chemical and artificial flavour/colour loaded candy bar is, and as such are not qualified to make a decision on its kashrus status based simply on the listed ingredients. Furthermore, many candy bars et al. usually list something along the lines of “and other natural flavours” as the last ingredient listing. That moniker is used to inform the consumer that there are ingredients in the item whose quantities are not large enough to require itemized listing, but are not necessarily batul b’shishim. Even if it was less than a sixtieth, it would still be debatable, and most would paskan assur anyway.

I could hear the moreh heter to self-paskan based on reading ingredients back in the 50’s, but in 2012, with the dearth of OU (et al.) certified products, to still self-paskan by reading ingredients shows a certain disregard for kashrus. Where no other option is available the case can be made, but if you can just as easily pick up the next, kosher certified candy bar and you don’t…something’s up.
