bombmaniac got banned. teh powers that be and i came to some sort of tacit agreement after i made the soliek account.

“oh my goodness. This is so freaky. Bomb is it really you? I feel sick. My world is spinning. I..I…I… thought that…. soliek was an angry feminist who got educated in domestic violence.

Oh bomb, I am so glad and relieved soliek is not a real person. death to those feminists!. And you are alive!

hOW ARE YOU? where are you living now? are you getting any therapy?”

    feminist?! really? why?

i was educated BY domestic violence as you well know…

i live in teh same place but im not home most of the day (only 1.5 hours) and no im not in therapy although i could prbably do with some…although im getting a temporary fix by helppoing others. an interesting form of escape

i thought it was a very powerful statement on the part of the global internet. i say global internet because SOPA would not just affect US citizens, it would affect every internet user in the world. and its not advocacy, or political activism on the part of these websites. theyre entitled to protest SOPA because SOPA stands a very good chance of closing some of these sites down.

i drink my fair share…its not necessarily a matter of when and where a kid drinks as much as how and why. for example if a kid drinks in his dorm because he enjoys it then who cares. if a kid drinks at a club because hes drowning his sorrows then you have a problem. personally i think any problem you may have is simply a lack of awareness about alcohol and lack of proper education. i was brought up in a heavily anti-alcohol house. i drink moderately now, and only when i know that i have no responsibilities the following day, and i know that i will not need to drive any time soon.

kids are going to drink…when did you start? wanna avoid problems? talk to your kids about it. let them drink some booze at the shabbos table under your supervision. give them an idea of what responsible drinking is.

wikipedia is available through netbooks and mobile devices and google is clearly up.

SOPA is a mess because it uses DNS blacklisting which would effectively take the site offline worldwide. the entire site…offline…for the entire world…because of one instance of copyright infringement. and site owners would be responsible for user-generated content. so suppose i feel like wrecking yeshiva world, all i would have to do, in theory, is post some copyrighted material in the coffee room and YWN would be in violation of SOPA.

also messing with the DNS is not recommended. DNS defines what your web address means–to which IP address on the internet it refers. so suppose a site gets blocked and that IP address becomes inactive due to underuse, and someone else picks it up. suppose google.com owns 24.187.39.139 and google.com routes to that IP address. now suppose google.com gets blocked. give it six months and that IP address will become available again by the ISP and get passed on to lets say theyeshivaworld.com. so the ISP allocates the web host that IP address and it happens to come to theyeshivaworld.com. remember, google originally had that address but now theyeshivaworld has it.

but SOPA can only affect the US DNS list, so when someone in israel types in google.com…what he’d get would be theyeshivaworld.com. no one controls global DNS…each country has their way of managing it, but theyre all interconnected. when you try calling up a chinese website, your computer contacts DNS servers in china to recall the IP address to which the URL refers, but if the two countries have different versions of the DNS list, which can happen as a result of SOPA, then you can get some interesting and incredibly annoying conflicts.

there are three definitions of buffalo:

    1) the city: Buffalo, NY

    2) the animal (bison)

    3) to bully

usage 1) the city is a proper noun and therefore must be capitalized; therefore when you see a capitalized “Buffalo” in the sentence assume it is the city.

the next two are a bit more difficult to figure out without punctuation, as the punctuation gives the sentence tone and thus, context.

on to had had and had.

had had is an alternate form of had when referring to the verb in the past tense.

hadpast participle, past tense of have (Verb)

    Verb:

    Possess, own, or hold

as per that definition had had should be incorrect, but there are specific instances where each usage is proper. the statement that the teacher was more pleased with had had expresses a thought without context and is therefore misleading.

had on its own is a verb which denotes previous possession.

had had is a pluperfect which denotes both tense, in this case past, and perspective. in other words, whereas had refers to actual possession, where the possession is the focus of the discussion, had had refers instead to the time of possession, or a time frame of possession.

example for had: i once had a dog named scruffy.

example for had had: i had had a root canal before, but this one still seemed like pain beyond anything i had ever experiences.

the focus of had’s use in a sentence is to tell you that the subject is in possession of something.

the focus of had had in a sentence is to tell you that the subject experienced something, be it actual possession (as in i had had dogs before, but this one was particularly rowdy) or a description of a past event (as in the example with the root canal.)

the pluperfect is not exclusive to had had and the second had can usually be replaced with something more specific.

getting back to the example with the dog, “i had owned dogs before, but this one was particularly rowdy” would be a perfect use of the pluperfect (pun intended).

another indication of when to use or how to recognize a pluperfect is the timeline of the sentence.

“i had a dog.” tells a story about a man and a dog and then stops. it fixes on one specific point in time and moves no further.

the pluperfect had had or had (insert participle here) refers back to a fixed point in time and then moves you forward.

let’s examine the man who had owned dogs before. he is telling you that he had owned dogs before, or had had dogs before, however is or was surprised by the dog he acquired either sometime after his previous possession of dogs or the present. a sentence with a pluperfect has a timeline–a sentence with a simple verb does not.

therefore, depending on the message you are trying to convey, you may choose had or had had; however, the terms are NOT interchangeable as implied by that sentence.

    you got that wrong.

James, while John had had “had”, had had had “had;” “had had” had had a better effect on the teacher.

the “while” should probably be changed to “whereas,” too.

    “while John had had had”

is a subordinate clause. the primary idea being conveyed in that sentence is that john had had “had.” next, your sentence would be a run on without the semicolon (or perhaps an emdash would also be acceptable). You also failed to denote which instances of the word “had” were references to the use of the word and which were verbs.

    on to the buffalo sentence.

Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo.

    you got that wrong too.

“Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo.”

is the correct sentence–minus a bit of punctuation. once again there is a subordinate clause which must be indicated by commas.

Buffalo buffalo, Buffalo buffalo buffalo, buffalo Buffalo buffalo.

Buffalo (as in the city) buffalo (as in the animal), Buffalo (city) buffalo (animal) buffalo (bully), buffalo (bully) Buffalo (city) buffalo (animal).

    in other words:

Those Buffalo buffalo, who, ironically enough, are themselves buffaloed by Buffalo buffalo, buffalo Buffalo buffalo.

now ordinarily i wouldnt nitpick as much, but i know that you got those sentences from wikipedia where the grammar is explained in great detail and you therefore should have known better.

There’s a rebbe somewhere in my family whose grandfather was niftar and left him the mantle of rebbe. at the time he was learning in a litvishe yeshiva and wasn’t interested in being rebbe and didnt think he was worthy. so one of the chassidim told him “if we can take a cow and make it into a pair of tefillin, we can take a litvak and turn him into a rebbe”

and thats how you make a rebbe 😀

i posted this a few times in other abuse related threads…

abuse is about power and control. whatever the reason, whatever the possible cause, whether you, in his mind at least, were the cause because of your depression or whether he does it because its a shortcut, you have to realize two things.

    1) he will do it again. he WILL do it again. there is no question about it. someone who has abused WILL abuse. it only makes sense after all. i mean lets say he tells you or the kids to do something and they refuse. so he tells her again. she refuses again. so he yells, and she still refuses. so he yells even louder and raises a hand. NOW she stops because she is terrified.

and this continues for a week or two until one day raising his hand and his voice no longer work on your precious daughter so after doing the usual, he now brings his hand down on her face. that gets the message across. until it doesnt. and thats when her head gets banged into a wall. and that works…until it doesnt. what then?

someone who gets used to exerting power and control by means of physical violence or emotional abuse never stops taking that shortcut because why should he? all he has to do is escalate and his subjects will listen…

    2) this addresses your question “was it my fault” the answer is…that its completely irrelevant. i should amend that. not only is the answer no, the answer is irrelevant. take a step back from your marriage and your kids and review the situation in your mind’s eye as an unbiased third party.

you walk into a house where the mother is depressed (for whatever reason, quite possibly due to an abusive husband) and you see the mother lying upstairs when all of a sudden you hear a BANG! so you go running and you see the father bashing his little daughter’s head against a wall! the daughter runs away, crying to her mommy for comfort from her big bad daddy, and the daddy follows to where the mommy lies, trying to justify his actions or cover them up.

if that was in a movie you watched youd be cringing, yelling, crying, or all of the above. as well you should. youd be outraged that the father could ever do that.

do you know why? because that is not how normal people resolve conflict. normal people resolve conflict through rational, if a bit heated, discussion. shouting matches between couples, while not recommended, happens every now and again because that is how conflicts are resolved. both sides are angry about spomething, both sides need to let off some steam, so they yell at each other for an hour or two, they make up, and everything’s back together.

(by the way, the whole shouting match thing is hardly ideal…but it does happen every now and again)

THEY DO NOT BANG THEIR KIDS HEADS AGAINST THE WALL!!!

i dont care what you think you may have done to set him off, what psychological eggshells on which you may or may not have been treading when dealing with your husband…it is not in any way your fault the way he treats you and your children.

now for what to do. i grew up in an abusive home. my mother was bipolar and didnt always take her meds. when she got manic…i got abused. for the first 13 years of my life it was severe emotional abuse, but past that it progressed to physical abuse. and it never let up. once she started down that road the abuse got worse and wrose and worse until i had to beat her with a belt to get the message across that i was stronger and that she couldnt abuse me. no one should ever have to hit their mother.

your daughter should never have to hit her father. but trust me if you stay there the day may very well come when your daughter realizes that a knife can be used for more than cutting carrots, or a hammer can be used for more than banging nails and when that day comes it will all be too late for everyone involved.

abuse is like an avalanche. it snowballs, and snowballs, and keeps on p[rogressing until an unstoppable force meets an immovable object and then you have the answer to the age old question.

please, i beg of you, for the sake of your kids, for your own sake, and if it makes any difference for the sake of your husband…get the heck out of your house as soon as you possibly can along with your children. make sure you have evidence of his abuse, and run and run fast. leave him behind and never look back. it will be painful for weeks, months, perhaps years, but ultimately you will realize that you made the best and only possible decision for your and your children’s lives.

hatzlacha and i wish you only the best in life.
