“but I think to judge whether or not someone is more yeshivish or not really doesn’t depend on the shirt-“

yeshivish is no indication of yahadus at all. yeshivish is a way you act, not a way you are.

right. a goy is a ganav, a goy is a ligner. im not disagreeing that the most likely scenario is that he actually was an anti semite following what was socially accepted, but one shouldnt discredit the possibility that he wasnt.

in reply to: what do you think of daf yomi? #860772

you all assume that everyone has to be a talmid chacham.

you all assume that everyone has to learn the same things and the same amount or their leaning is worthless and superficial.

you all assume that your derech halimud and the derech halimud of your respective yeshivos is the only correct derech halimud and everything else is just a bunch of sheep playing talmid chacham.

longarekel: what is wrong with you? lets break down your criticism of daf yomi.

so some people have mentioned that if not for daf yomi many people wouldnt learn at all. if thats the case then daf yomi is a wonderful thing–because of course you would agree that limud hatorah is a wonderful thing–but no. youre completely discounting the benefits of daf yomi in favor of some lofty ideal where you live in a world where everyone knows kal hatorah kula. good luck with that by the way.

so more people are learning, but according to you theyre learning the wrong thing. assuming theyre actually interested in knowing halacha they will find time in their day to learn some. assuming they dont care that much but know that they have to be kovea ittim, then mitoch shelo lishma ba lishma, and your ranting is useless because they would never have learned halacha anyway.

some other genius mentioned that every litvishe rosh yeshiva is against daf yomi…that person is wrong. patently wrong. i spent some time around rebbeim who were a bit critical of daf yomi, but it wasnt the institution that they disliked, it was the fact that these people dont learn more. FOR WHATEVER REASON. the ideal for every rebbi and rosh yeshiva is to produce talmidim who never leave a beis medrash, and while that ideal is nice, it is completely unattainable and they know it. so they spend as much time as possible trying to convince as many students as they can, and one way of doing it is by saying “do you wanna be a daf yomi sheep, or a true talmid chacham?”

the choice is loaded of course because if you asked them outside of their roles as rebbeim, they would tell you that daf yomi l’maaseh is a wonderful thing–the fact that the person left the koslei beis hamedrash is what isnt wonderful. the fact that he needs daf yomi isnt wonderful. not the fact that daf yomi exists.

so knowing the entire shulchan aruch is a prerequisite for learning gemara? im sorry…i may have missed that in Intro to Judaism 101. last i looked, the mishna berura and shulchan aruch often make references to topics in the gemara and expect you to have some knowledge of those references. how would one have knowledge of those references if they cany learn gemara because they must learn halacha instead. bit of a catch 22 wouldnt you say?

so what you must want is a balance of the two, which i already addressed above.

actually your post is completely backwards. google doesnt allow apps which interfere with other apps or services to run at all. the iphone allows you to set parental guidelines on your phone, or lock the browser entirely, which would then allow you to install a browser that would double as a web filter. blackberry is so awful youd have to be nuts to browse on it anyway.

william shakespeare never saw a jew in his life.

the question has been posed and no one knows the answer. on the one hand, merchant of venice is so blatantly anti semitic that one is tempted to label the bard an anti semite; on the other hand, his depiction of a greedy and spiteful jew is so over the top that it can be said he was painting a caricature of that era and its unabashed racism. shakespeare may very well, it has been posited, have been very pro semitic and was using his stories to make others see the foolishness of their prejudices. there were no jews in england from 1290 to the de facto…legalization is the wrong word because it just isnt true…but jews were essentially no longer banned after cromwell decided to allow a small group of jews who had been living secretly in england to remain.

i would say that a white short IS more choshuv, and the goyishe world is the proof. would you wear a tux with a blue shirt? when was the last time you saw a president wearing a colored shirt in any kind of presidential setting? i can go on…

as for the question about whether a ben torah should wear a white shirt…i say lav davka. i went to chafetz chaim…i dont buy into the whole white shirt thing. i believe the rosh yeshiva;s criterion was that one looks elegantly conservative…or conservatively elegant…i dont think anyone really knows which 😀 and that can easily be achieved with any kind of color combination. and yes…i wear pink and lavender shirts 🙂

by the way, i would wager that for most people, their emuna is an afterthought almost. they believe in hashem because why shouldnt they…their parents did and told them to, but most people i would say never have to give it much thought. those who do have to, for whatever reason, either come out stronger, or just drop it all.

poll yourselves, when was the last time you gave your emuna any serious thought? im not saying this to put a dent in anyones emuna chas vshalom, but it is an interesting point to ponder.

by the way, on the subject of kiruv for orthoprax people, ive come to the conclusion that its pointless. the foundation of their problem (not the cause…the cause is usually something unrelated to religion itself) is a complete lack of belief in god and by extension the torah. ive given up trying to convince people to believe in god because i feel that it is a personal decision–not one that can be made for someone else. i can share my experiences, i can tell them why i believe, but i cant try to make them believe. we are all given free will, and for many if not most people born frum in never really is a choice we have to make, but it can be, and if it is, it is one of the hardest decisions a person would have to make in life.

the people i have come across usually try to instigate a fight with me in hope that by making me look like an idiot theyll be secure enough in their kefirah. im not going to facilitate that, and i dont believe the conversation would be productive even if i did win the argument, so i just dont bother. i gladly debate everything with anyone who wants to except the existence of god–i just see it as a pointless endeavour.
