Health: actually the part about psychiatrists making at best educated guesses is accurate…
soliekMemberno actually i agree with popa…(gosh i havent said that in a while) whether or not the right course of action was taken, this thread is objectionable because of its tone
soliekMembersoliek i think what we can conclude from this very passionate discussion is that there is reason and justification for popping pills if necessary however one should not go looking for it because it does have potentially dangerous side effects.
there is some veracity to the claim that psychiatrists are script-happy, however they are not the only ones at fault…people DO doctor shop and ultimately the only data upon which a psychiatrist can rely when deciding whether or not to prescribe medication to a patient is what that patient decides to tell him.
soliekMember“And that something is that not even the best doctors know anything abut what they are doing”
yep. psychiatric medicine is at best educated guesswork for world class professionals let alone doctor shopping housewives…
soliekMemberis anyone here working with real data, or is this all a straw man…
soliekMember*facepalm*
soliekMemberi think that was meant facetiously…k’lomar: you would be better off with slim fast which, as unhealthy as it is, is still quite a bit healthier than surgery.
soliekMemberdont live in a dump
soliekMemberpersonally i wrote him off when he started performing for goyim. to me that was utterly unacceptable. i used to like his stuff…but i stopped listening when he released “live at stubbs.” so i really dont care what hes doing with himself now beause as far as im concerned he was rotten a year after he started this mishegass
soliekMember“MORE COWBELL!”
NEEDS MOAR COWBELL!!!
soliekMember“There are probably a few reasons for this widespead mental illness – mainly because we have to keep up with the Joneses, more than other groups!”
and yet every time i try posting something to that effect…it gets shot down…
i cant speak for every other chassidishe woman, but i CAN speak for my family and i know that when life became a bit difficult for my grandmother to handle…she doctor shopped for zoloft and wound up in the hospital with a rare side effect…
December 11, 2011 8:13 pm at 8:13 pm in reply to: To open or not to open (the door on a date) #835271soliekMemberis it just me who thinks that everyone here is waaaaaaaaaaay overthinking this?
heres the question. guys. would you open the door for your wife? if yes then open it for your date, if not then why bother?
girls. when married would you expect your husband to open the door for you? if yes then the guy opening the door on the date should matter. if not..then it shouldnt matter. any questions?
soliekMembersure why not…didnt eliezer give rivkah nose rings when they met? or is my memory a bit fuzzy…
December 11, 2011 2:42 pm at 2:42 pm in reply to: To open or not to open (the door on a date) #835258soliekMembersoliek i dont date…but i was pretty much taught (shoot me if you will) to hold any door for any woman of any age so yeah…ill probably be opening doors for anyone i date…anyone i marry…anyone in between…or anyone walking into our out of a pizza shop for the rest of my life…
when i drive my grandmother i open the door for her…when i drive my friends mother around or whatever i open the door for them to…so why would i not open the door for someone id be dating?
soliekMemberjust a side point…how on earth are people supposed to know that someone is working on tznius if all they see is something thats out of line? i mean this whole thing seems to me kind of like a guy walking into a beis medrash, swearing at his chavrusa, and then wondering why people berate him even though hes working oh so hard on his lashon nekiya…(not that the two cases are exactly comparable…but you should get my point)
soliekMemberi just bought a pink shirt
soliekMembersure why not
soliekMember“Can you explain why the cristians are wrong?”
your emuna should not be pendant on everyone else being wrong…it should be more a belief that you are right
soliekMemberobtw…how WOULD you PROVE maamad har sinai other than accepting a mesorah that it happened?
soliekMemberemuna p’shuta is not simply blind faith…i know what wolf meant
soliekMemberim sure…my only objection is with this thread and the complete surprise at those women’s reactions…why the surprise at their reaction?
December 10, 2011 11:11 pm at 11:11 pm in reply to: Do Religious Jews Suffer In The American Justice System? (Article) #834400soliekMemberZman had a piece in this months issue detailing three cases where law enforcement picked on people for no good reason (not specifically for being jewish)
one was a guy who bought a repossessed car that the owner had reported stolen
one was a guy who drove drunk and had to go through 3 years of tzaros
one was a guy who was arrested for picking up a wallet with the intent to return it
cases one and three were valid…but i strongly objected to case two. the whole time the guy was whining about how he had only had a bit to drink and that they were blowing it out of proportion…no. i must object. i work at a driving school…i take this stuff seriously…and driving drunk is NEVER ok. i really took umbrage at seeing that article sandwiched between two others in which the “victims” were justified in their complaints
soliekMemberok so youure modeh it was out of line…so back to my point. you knew it was out of line for that situation…so why are you so indignant at having someone call you on it? its true that the way they did it may have been wrong, but you should have expected it.
soliekMemberPEOPLE!!! I CAN’T SAY THIS ENOUGH!!! PARAGRAPH BREAKS MATTER!!!
soliekMemberok im gonna be really unpopular here and buck the trend…im not gonna give you encouragement, im not gonna commiserate, im not gonna be righteously indignant…im gonna ask you three simple questions.
1) were you aware that your style of dress would be out of line
2) if yes, did that knowledge make you constantly self conscious and give you the feeling that everyone was pointing and staring
3) if you answered yes to either of the above two questions…what on earth did you expect
whether or not the person who said something is right is absolutely irrelevant beause the problem is not them…the problem is you, and placing blame on them, again whether they are right or wrong, is your way of justifying what may or may not have been wrong on your part. so yes, they may have been wrong, but how is it relevant? you may be working on yourself and your tznius and that is indeed very commendable in an age when the world is trying to expose more if itself than cover up, but if you want to be in certain circles with all the requisite social norms and practices, then be prepared for the consequences of deviating. dont get angry or upset when people call you on it.

you’ll have to decide if its worth the gamble. there are guys there who live rough and its unfortunate…it really depends on the guy you’re talking about. are his issues hashkafic? if so they ohr yitzchok is probably a better bet. if his issues are worse than that, if hes on the street already then our place might be something to consider maybe in conjunction with ohr yitzchok

granted ive only been there for three days…but from what ive seen there and from what im reading on this thread…Our Place may be just the place for him. its pretty much a led by example thing, and theres someone there for him who will are about him…and that an make all the difference. i understand what you meant when you said that…but if this kid truly has hit rock bottom or is close then give Our Place a try.

soliekMemberactually yeah…i mean take a look at the new york post article thread, its for the most part respectful and civil but its spurred so much discussion and that discussion is what will eventually effect change in that issue.
