I object to your disrespect towards many talmidei chachamim. Mocking their status as rabbonim because they have a psak with which you disagree is a display of tremendous chutzpah and arrogance. I will not continue discussing halacha with you until you retract and apologize.

The halacha of kazayis and kabeitza was established by our chachamim in an era when they were mesaken brachos.

You have avoided addressing my case directly. I ask you again, would it be OK for someone to be “machmir” and wash, say homotzi and bentch on a piece of cake in order to be zoche to Hashem’s favor? If the answer is no, then the same would apply to mezonos bread for someone who follows the psak of a competant rav who paskens that mezonos bread has the din of pas haba bekisnin. There are many such rabbonim who are talmidei chachamim and yorei shomayim and have reached this conclusion based on their understanding of the sugya. A talmid of such a rav would have no right to be “machmir” and say hamotzi.

garymeyers – yes, birchas hamazon is d’oraysa. However, one would fulfill the mitzvah d’orayasa with al hamichya which is a summary of the three brachos of birchas hamazon. In fact, the second and third brachos of bentching were established in the days of Yehoshua and Dovid uShlomo respectively.

Shmendrik – the fact that it is easier to say mezonos and more effortfull, to wash and bentch does not mean that mezonos is a kula and hamotzi is a chumra. Would it be OK for someone to be “machmir” and say hamotzi on a piece of cake? surely, he must say mezonos even though it is easier.

p.s. I respectfully request that this Torah discussion not contain any more needless attacks on our fellow Jews.

Shmendrick – Why do take for a davar pashut that saying mezonos is a kulah and hamotzi is a chumra? Saying mezonos and al hamichya on bread is at worst a bittul of a derabanan whereas saying birchas hamazon in place of al hamichya can be an issur d’oraysa of lo sisa.

It is important to define the term kovaya seudah. The shulchan aruch 168:6 is clear that being kovaya seudah depends on the amount eaten and has nothing to do with the intent of the eater. In other words, it makes no difference if you are eating it as a snack or as a meal, the only thing that matters is how much you eat.

    Shmendrick –

You post is incredibly ironic. It is dripping with disdain and condescension towards someone you perceive as not on your madrega and yet the very thing you decry is his sinah. I commend you for dedicating your life to learning Torah but based on what you have posted it seems to me that you would benefit from some introspection about your motives for doing so. If you are spending your life in the beis hamidrash to try and bring a greater hisgalus of kavod shomayim, (as opposed to using it as a tool to make yourself feel superior to others)it is not apparent from your words here.

“But make no mistake, they are providing a service for the all of us.”

I strongly object to your implication that these people are acting on my behalf.

    I handed my wife a kesubah in which it says “v’ana eflach v’afarnes yasichi… k’hilchos guvrin yehudain d’falchin um’farnesin es n’sheihon b’kushta”

“And I will work and support you… LIKE THE WAY OF JEWISH MEN THAT THEY WORK AND SUPPORT THEIR WIVES HONESTLY.”

Someone who protests those who are trying to help people go “in the ways of Jewish men” are not providing me with a service.

I would agree with your reason number one. I would just tweak it slightly. I think that the parents who give nice gifts (based on what they can afford) are (in general) people for whom the chinuch of their children in a main focus of their lives. Children who have parents who are so dedicated to them, on average, live up to their parents goals more closely.

P.S. I very specifically wrote the words “on average”. I am very well aware of many cases where good, dedicated parents have children who stray far from their parents ideals. But I believe it to be indisputable that children do better with dedicated parents.

P.P.S. On behalf of myself and many other Rabbeim, I would like to express my appreciation to to all those of you who open your wallets and checkbooks to so generously give the gifts that you can afford (whatever amount they may be). I would like to doubly thank those of you who include a note or card of appreciation that specifically mentions some of the nice attributes of the Rebbe and how your child has gained from him. Children do not often express genuine appreciation for all of the dedication and hard work that the Rabbeim put it. It is easy to feel that your efforts are not noticed and not making a real difference. Reading a card that says “My son is excited to learn parsha because of the excitement with which you tell it over” or the like, can make a Rebbe’s day.

“Indeed we are ?????, ????? but ?????? and ??????. So right after the fighting and nissim, they threw away their weapons and shields and went right back to Torah and Avodah.”

Perhaps that is what should have been done but it is not what took place.

After the Chanuka Story, The Chasmonaim continued fighting and established a kingdom which ruled the land for many, many years of military based rulership.

In fact, the kingdom was brought down by all the fighting, when the Romans were called in to settle a dispute between brothers.

“This explains also why Pessach has no need for megilah reading either.”

The reason we do not need a megilla for pesach is because its miracles were written in the Torah and we read those sections of the Torah on the first and seventh days.

Besides, we do read a megilla on pesach – shir hashirim.

The simple answer to your question is that the story of Chanukah took place after the time of the Anshei Knesses Hagedolah, who sealed the Tanach. Therefore, any books that were written, could not be included in Tanach and did not gain the status as a Sefer Kodesh. So, alothough there is a a Megilas Antiyoches, it does not have the status of our five migilos hakdoshos.

The Ramah in 637:3 seems to say that it is kosher b’dieved. However the Mishna Brura brings the Magen Avraham who says not to make a bracha on the sukkah. The Mishna Brura himself says that if you have no other sukkah you can make a bracha.

There may be another potential problem. if the sukkah is located in a public enough place that you would be afraid/unable to sleep there, the Ramah seems to say that you cannot use the sukkah at all. 640:4

Please do not rely on anything I have written as halacha l’ma’aseh.

yidyid- is the expression “masai yagiu malbushai limalbush avosai”?

The mishna in maseches taanis points out that it does not say by the people of ninvei that “Hashem saw their sackcloth and fasting” but rather that “He saw their actions and teshuva”.

On the list of challenges facing klal yisrael today, the fabric of one’s yarmulka is pretty low down.

In my humble opinion, it seems you have fallen to the temptation of knocking others to make yourself feel superior. (either that or i have fallen to a troll thread)

If I am wrong, and this thread was inspired by a true feeling of defense of Hashem’s Kavod (although I feel that it is completely misguided) I apologize for believing otherwise.

“but I could hear a Tzad that America’s national anthem is borderline Avodah Zarah because it personifies an inanimate object.”

First of all, which inanimate object is being personified?

Secondly, how does personification of an inanimate object border on avoda zara? Yeshayahu Hananvi did it many times. (and being a navi does not make avoda zara any more permissible. A navi cannot make a horoas sha’ah for avoda zara)

If I may speak for Yichusdik, I believe that in his (beautiful) post he was making the point that we would all be better served by focusing our energies on bringing more Jews tachas canfei hashechina (under the wings of Hashem’s Divine Presence) as opposed to trying to find new ways to exclude and ostracize those who we feel we can classify as inferior to us spiritually.

I may agree with you. But Romney is the only one (with any kind of chance) who is running against Obama. So why wouldn’t you vote for the more preferable choice even if it’s not what you wanted.

“A person’s running mate is the direction in which he wants to go”

I disagree. I believe that a person’s running mate is the person who can bring in a state or segmant of the electorate that he could not otherwise get. Do you think that Joe Biden is the direction that Obama wanted to go? He just needed an older and more experienced politician to balance his youth. Does Biden have ANY influence over policy? In fact, how many VPs did?

I may or may not agree with your definition of politicians. However, do you really believe that they would both advance the same policies? Why do you care if the president is being “sincere”? If you believe that neither is sincere, but one of them will insincerely advance policies that will be better for the country, wouldn’t it make sense to vote for him?

Also, why do you believe that Rubio would have such great influence over a “blood sucking creature”?

Once you grant the government the right to ban the foods you consider to be “non-foods”, what will stop them from doing the same to foods that you do consider to be edible.

The point is, that just as you make certain distinctions about what you believe you should and shouldn’t eat, each person should have the freedom to make similar of different choices. If you believe that margarine is not food, then by all means, don’t eat it. But why should I be bound by your opinion?
