Yep, that Super Bowl one was so funny that my friends and i are cracking up about it… This one is say… a bit morbid. I am the type of person who gets creeped out every time I have to walk near the part of costco that has the coffin display…

Moderator, I know that Jews have historically been bankers, but how often do you borrow money from Jewish banks (at least in the states), also I am sure if you live in E”Y that it would be easier to get a heter to take out a mortgage. And what is a heter iska?

in reply to: When to buy a kever? Should young people buy graves? #926771

my mom is in her 50s and she has not bought a coffin yet (just a slight deviation from the subject… lets make this thread morbidly fun?) my great grandparents bought a bunch of plots in a cemetery for the all members until my mom’s generation dies out. I don’t plan on buying a plot when I am 30, lets put it that way…

Plus the substandard care has been the story of this past month… ignoring my story for a second, another girl in my program woke up at five am to get a flu shot, she arrived right when they were open and they refused to give her one even though she has insurance and stuff…

in reply to: Oorah's Million Dollar Raffle #1049133

But then couldn’t one argue that someone who has a mortgage is also dealing with ribbis?

I personally have benefitted tremendously from oorah. I remember when I was in twelfth grade thinking that my only relationship with them was the fact that they contributed towards the cost of my day school tuition, I mean, my mom was the one learning with a Torah Mate (and she is not religious, but nevertheless, that is the highlight of her week). Then I went on Discover U because I needed to go in order to get my scholarship money for this year from oorah. I honestly did not enjoy my time there because I didn’t really know anyone at the time and I thought it was a major turn off… BUT, once I got to Israel, I realized that most seminary girls are not able to just have a place to go every saturday night to chill, don’t have the option of automatically having a place to stay every other week, don’t have the ability to access numerous resources that I was able to access when I needed to switch schools, and if they do not have family that is religious that will open their doors to them- they are just stuck going to strangers houses for shabbos. As much as I used to dread having a relationship with oorah, I can honestly say that oorah has had a huge impact on my year, and I am now closer with the people I went on Discover U with than I was when I was there and since I am not exactly in a bais yaakov seminary right now, I am glad that I am able to have a more bais yaakov connection that I can count on. I am telling you, it is completely worth funding, the girls that benefit from oorah are an amazing group of girls, and even though there are a number of other places to give tzedakah to, oorah really goes all out and they are very accessible to people who are involved.

Meaning the bais yaakov should try to find them mentors who will be there for them/ make some efforts to accommodate the whole school since they are boys…

I think that he should have listened to his doctor in the first place. The doctor was acting as Hashem’s messenger.

That is why people could just get T-shirts with words (YES, words… they could be on the back of the shirts/ on the sleeves to prevent attention from being drawn towards the chest) that say something like “Our enduring love for Israel will last forever, and nothing will cause us to perish.” In fact, having those words on the back could make it look very deep because it shows that we as Jews do not need to show off our views like the anti-semites show off theirs.

Thanks for the link. I will try to call them tomorrow…

apushatayid- I am not saying that I am all for co-ed schools, however, at least they are still being taught by rebbeim, who can understand that (since they are uncomfortable teaching a coed class) that the boys are most likely somewhat uncomfortable as well. Perhaps the bais yaakov can make a deal with the local yeshiva to let the boys join the boys in the yeshiva for at least an hour a day, so that they will be in an environment at least part of the time with other boys as well. Even if they have bochurim from the local Kollel come and teach them Gemara during the halacha classes for the girls, at least some sort of accommodation should be made to acknowledge that they are boys.

Which frum medical organizations do you recommend. I went to two different doctors at Wolfson center (one went to Albert Einstein…) and they told me that since I am really stressed out that there is nothing that they could do. Plus I am in a ton of trouble with my mom at the moment, who thinks she has control over me that she legally does not have anymore (she has been making threats all year that she does not have the legal authority to make…)

My student health insurance requires me to get a referral from a doctor to a gastro and submit a medical report and stuff… none of which both of the doctors I went to would do.

The blood went away a few weeks ago.

I don’t try to blow off anything as psychological, its the doctors that do that because they don’t think I am being legit.

I did go to a doctor, I went to at least five doctors in the past month. Things get more complicated when your student health insurance requires you to get approval to see a gastro and none of the doctors you went to would give it to you.

I just called the school and they said that they are not sure yet if next year they will be having the following:

    Pninim Shana Bet- No Chedvas.

Pninim Shana Bet- Chedvas Separate school.

No Pninim shana Bet- Chedvas (meaning the same as this year)

They told me to call again in a month because they do not usually start the application process until after Pesach.

I do realize that it is difficult, my mom got her job through a temp agency, she was able to extend her contract to the point where she worked there for a bit over four years.

You could also look at the OU job board. Plus, there is this website I have gotten a few one- time gigs online called elance.com I got jobs copying and pasting websites to word documents and got paid a bit for it. You end up competing against people from third world countries, but for me, I would bid significantly below minimum wage, and then they would notice that I am american and fluent in English, so they would pay me significantly more, and hire me.

Health: I didn’t take it yesterday, and when I was unable to help so much during my chessed time at Yad Eliezer, I also could barely eat anything for dinner. This is not the time to get angry. I am telling you that even if it is for it’s “placebo effects” that at least it worked when I took it.

farrockgrandma: Do you know the gematria of your relatives last name? The mods posted it for someone else in order to allow me to be able to contact them. I had a prescription but since my condition is chronic, my (student) insurance won’t cover any refills. That way, if you tell them in advance and I am able to get their number through the newcomers guide (if they are in it), then I would be able to get some more from them. Thanks a ton for offering! I really appreciate it!

The best thing that your daughter can do is speak to her friends who went to these seminaries. They can give her the best advice on what she should do.

I did not get them mixed up, I paid $100 and 30 shkalim for the session, so I clearly was paying for a psychiatrist, plus I was told to adjust my medication. A psychologist would not do that.

I saw a psychiatrist today and started relaxation therapy…

in reply to: Seminary Tips #925184

I was at Darchei Binah Sister school and I had to pay $50 for dorm utility fee to get supplies to use to clean the dorm when it was my toranut job and $150 for laundry fee for the privilege of doing two loads of laundry a week while I was there.

If you need to provide yourself with multiple meals a day, then I would say you would need $100 a week so that you aren’t starving…

in reply to: Seminary Tips #925181

Food: It is really expensive in most places in Israel, however, there are ways to at least get cheaper junk food. In Geula, there is a store that has bags of popcorn hanging from the ceiling and they are at a really good price, I usually get the 14 shekel popcorn, and I buy sunflower seeds for my junk food most of the time and the popcorn lasts me about a week.

Clothing: If you need to purchase clothing, you should do it in Geula because it is much cheaper there. I have needed to purchase tights and skirts (after leaving the first seminary that I was at, a bunch of my skirts went missing, so I only had six skirts and they were the ones I never liked to wear/ packed because my mom wanted me to wear colorful clothing in Israel… so I have bought some replacement skirts in geula).

Sefarim: If your school gives you a list of what you will need to purchase before going and you see that you already own some of the seforim you need, then you should bring the ones you already own so that you don’t have to spend as much money on sefarim. Some schools have the option of borrowing sefarim you need for class for a token fee, but those ones might not be in such great condition.

Traveling: You should make the best out of your seminary year by visiting different parts of Israel on shabbosim. I spent a shabbos with my friend in Haifa, and even though it was expensive to take the bus there, it was totally worth it because I had an amazing experience. Just keep in mind that since you are in Israel, that busses need to stop with enough time for the drivers to get ready for shabbos, so make sure you leave early when going out for shabbos.

    Buses: See traveling.

Family: Make sure to see your family! They most likely want to see you! Even though I am not so close to my relatives that live in Israel, a bunch of my cousins planned their visits for this year because I am here in seminary. That also makes it easier to have people bring me things that I need…

    I hope this helps.

Awwww. that is so sweet. I sent an e-mail to my mom before I spoke to her on the phone and she read it after we spoke and she said she is really proud of me and stuff. I honestly wish I had a direction in life, but at the moment, I feel like this year, instead of clarifying things for me, made everything more confusing… I have no idea what I am doing tomorrow other than the fact that I am going to wake up at 6:45 and call my rabbi at seven for our appointment that we have been trying to work out for over a month…

in reply to: Darchei Binah 2013/14 #924238

I don’t know who is planning on going, but as someone who has been through a ton of stuff this year, I have some seminary advice that would be useful.

Regardless of what I have thought of various seminaries I have been at this year, or ones I looked into, the reason that any seminary is around is because they are meant to cater to a specific group of girls. For example, Brovenders is catered to Modern Orthodox Girls who are very smart and possibly will go on to Ivy League Colleges after their year here, and want to learn in a Bais Midrash with girls from all over the world (I am saying this because I am half in Brovenders…). Since I have a bit more Bais Yaakov hashkafos, I find myself a bit stressed at times and find it difficult to be here. However, that does not mean that this is not a good school. It simply means that it is not my type of school, and I need to keep that in mind while I am here.

I mean, you should 100% go to the seminary that is for your hashkafa, and caters to your academic needs, however, the most important things that you need to look into when selecting a seminary are:

    1. Hashkafa.

    2. How academic is it?

    3. Free time.

    4. Are they strict with things such as curfew? Dress code (if you aspire to be in a bais yaakov environment, but are having issues with tznius, are you going to be ok. On the other hand, if you dress a certain way, is this school a place that will make sure other girls dress the way you do based on how much/ what the dress code is/ enforced?).

    5. What are your goals for the year?

    6. Do you know anyone who went there that loved it that can tell you if it is the right place for you?

    I hope this helps.

Although, I just found out that some people want me to stay in my current program, so i might end up staying here, here comes the stomach pain again(?!?!?!?!).
